Gianni Infantino has proposed a 48-team World Cup that would see 16 teams being eliminated in one round...The proposal adds a play-in round 3 days before the current 32-team group stage and from there on the competition would continue as usual...
FIFA will discuss the proposal in a council meeting next week before a decision is made by January...Infantino spoke of his proposal while visiting Bogota, Colombia...When Infantino was campaigning for FIFA presidency he was pushing for 40 team to participate...He wanted more teams to play the World Cup and said, "FIFA's idea is to develop football in the whole world, and the World Cup is the biggest event there is".
