In 1988, he claimed the inaugural Asia-Pacific championship alongside co-driver Fred Gocentas. The pair took the title scoring a solitary rally win in India at the Himalayan Rally, driving a Mitsubishi Galant VR-4.

But it was in 1991 when he and co-driver John Meadows left their mark on the WRC by taking a factory-backed Galant VR-4 to victory in the Ivory Coast round of the WRC to claim one of two WRC wins. On this occasion, Shinozuka claimed a first WRC win for a Japanese driver with a margin of more than two hours over local Mitsubishi driver Patrick Tauziac.

Shinozuka outlined his skills in particularly challenging rallies by repeating his Ivory Coast success the following season, this time beating Belgian, Opel driver Bruno Thiry.

This was the last of the Japanese pilotโs WRC triumphs having racked up 88 points from 20 starts in a WRC career that began in 1976 and ended with his last outing in Australia in 1997. All bar one start was behind the wheel of a Mitsubishi in a relationship with the Japanese brand that extended into rally-raid.

Shinozuka was equally successful tackling the notoriously difficult Dakar Rally. A third in 1987 was followed by a runner-up finish 12 months later, finishing behind WRC champion driver Juha Kankkunen.

A further two third-place finishes followed in 1992 and 1995, before claiming an outright victory in 1997, driving a Mitsubishi Pajero, after seeing off Frenchman Jean-Pierre Fontenay. The triumph also was the first for a Japanese driver.

"Shinozuka secured podium finishes in 1998 (second) and 2002 (third), before ending his long-time association with Mitsubishi to join the factory Nissan operation for 2003 with Ari Vatanen.

However, that yearโs event was marred by a nasty crash involving Shinozuka and co-driver Thierry Delli-Zotti, who were both seriously hurt while attempting to navigate a sand dune. Shinozuka was put into a coma but survived life-threatening injuries and returned to contest the event the following year. His final Dakar start came in 2007 where he finished in 59th position.

He was inducted into the Japanese Automobile hall of fame in 2022 and last year was part of the WRC safety team at Rally Japan.

- Tom Howard
MAX SPORTShttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02741222531890195382noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2028570633750725291.post-81276575396482777582024-03-19T08:32:00.006+03:002024-03-19T08:48:34.985+03:00HIGHLIGHTS | ROUND 4 | THE PLAYERS MAX SPORTShttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02741222531890195382noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2028570633750725291.post-52856510245795173402024-03-19T08:29:00.001+03:002024-03-19T08:29:30.787+03:002024 MARCH MADNESS: A FULL BRACKET BREAKDOWN OF THE NCAA TOURNAMENT BY REGION | CBS SPORTS MAX SPORTShttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02741222531890195382noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2028570633750725291.post-84128613408744438492024-03-19T08:22:00.001+03:002024-03-19T08:22:11.408+03:002024 NCAA TOURNAMENT FULL BRACKET PREDICTION| CBS SPORTS

MAX SPORTShttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02741222531890195382noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2028570633750725291.post-21940073079414626762024-03-19T08:17:00.003+03:002024-03-19T08:17:33.320+03:00SEC TOURNAMENT CHAMPS | FLORIDA GATORS VS. Hideki Chiba was in the same sports store in the Shinjuku area of Tokyo looking for something for his father-in-law.

They each picked up items in blue โ Los Angeles Dodgers Blue, of course. This reflects the color revolution that's evident all over Tokyo in the last few months since Shohei Ohtani moved from the Los Angeles Angels โ base color, red โ to sign a $700-million, 10-year contract with the Dodgers.

Angels caps have almost vanished in Tokyo. A Dodgers lid is the fashion item โ a bit like designer-label goods.

โOhtani just changed our store,โ said Takuto Yamashita, a part-time worker at a shop called Selection, which boasts Japan's largest array of MLB gear for all 30 teams, and the 12 Japanese pro teams, too.

But there's one team that matters more than the rest in Japan. And only one player, which is why the Dodgers invested so heavily in Ohtani; not just for his pitching and hitting, but for his celebrity status to market the Dodgers as Japan's team.

โThe place is completely different. It went from all red to to all blue," Yamashita added. "Without Ohtani in these last few months, the sales in this store would be so different.โ

Fukuo eyed a traditional white jersey with โDodgersโ in script across the front. "Everybody knows him, even if they are not baseball fans. To me, heโs a Japanese icon. I think people expected him to be a good player, but he is more than anyone expected.โ

Store manager Hayato Daido estimated that 60% of the sales come from Dodgers gear, or Ohtani specific t-shirts, jerseys, key chains, etc. Assistant store manager Takato Suzuki suggested it might be as high as 70%. Daido said about 10% of sales were linked to local teams like the Tokyo Giants.

Daido said Ohtani-related sales are โfour or five timesโ more than they were prior to the Dodgers announcing in December they'd signed him. He said gear has yet to arrive for Yoshinobu Yamamoto, who joined the Dodgers on a $325-million, 12-year contract โ reported to be the highest in money and longest in duration for any pitcher.

โThere is no doubt there will be demand for it,โ Daido said. โWe're just waiting.โ

Surprisingly, what's still selling are Ohtani caps and jerseys from his six years with the Angels.

โThat's because they are not being produced any more and have become collector's items,โ Suzuki, the assistant manager, said.

AP Photo

The store resembles a museum to Ohtani, filled with posters, memorabilia and โSho-timeโ emblazoned on myriad items. How will realignment affect the makeup of Division I? How much will football-related decisions affect basketball? How long will the NCAA Tournament stay at 68 teams, and if it changes, what will that mean for the Cinderellas of March?

For now, this event looks pretty much the way it has for a generation. Don't take it for granted as you fill out your brackets โ and if you need some tips, here you go. A Final Four with UConn, Houston, Gonzaga and Michigan State? Let us explain:

EAST REGION

First round winners: UConn, Northwestern, San Diego State, Auburn, BYU, Illinois, Drake, Iowa State.

Yale brings 7-footer Danny Wolf and an experienced supporting cast, but drew a tough first-round matchup against fourth-seeded Auburn. The Tigers are ranked No. 4 in the country by Ken Pomeroy.

Second round winners: UConn, Auburn, Illinois, Iowa State.

The Sweet 16 in this region could include the conference tournament champions of the Big East, SEC, Big Ten and Big 12.

Regional semifinal winners: UConn, Iowa State.

UConn is the betting favorite to win a second straight national title. The Huskies are also ranked No. 1 by Pomeroy, and although we're used to surprises it's hard to pick them to exit before the Elite Eight.

Regional champion: UConn. Iowa State had a case for a No. 1 seed, but there's a gap between the Cyclones and the Huskies.

SOUTH REGION

First Four: Colorado over Boise State.

First round winners: Houston, Nebraska, Wisconsin, Duke, Texas Tech, Kentucky, Florida, Marquette.

James Madison over Wisconsin figures to be a popular first-round upset pick โ maybe a little too popular. Same with Vermont over Duke. The chalk holds in this region, for this round anyway.

Second round winners: Houston, Duke, Kentucky, Florida.

Kentucky's defense should be its undoing eventually, but the Wildcats beat Texas Tech in a clash of styles.

Regional semifinal winners: Houston, Kentucky.

The Sweet 16 and Elite Eight in the South are being held in Dallas, so expect the Cougars to have plenty of support.

Regional champion: Houston. The Cougars should be well prepared after joining the Big 12 and facing a power-conference schedule. It's on to the Final Four for Kelvin Sampson's team.

MIDWEST REGION

First Four: Montana State over Grambling State, Colorado State over Virginia.

First round winners: Purdue, TCU, Gonzaga, Samford, Oregon, Creighton, Texas, Saint Peter's.

โDickinsonโ is the key word in this region. Kansas big man Hunter Dickinson didn't play in the Big 12 Tournament, and his health has been a concern for the Jayhawks. Top-seeded Purdue, meanwhile, needs to avoid being haunted by last year's loss to 16th-seeded Fairleigh Dickinson.

The Boilermakers advance. The fourth-seeded Jayhawks go down against Samford.

Second round winners: Purdue, Gonzaga, Creighton, Saint Peter's.

Three times in the past five tournaments, a No. 15 seed has made the Sweet 16, so don't be afraid to pick one. And hey, Saint Peter's has done it before from this same seed line.

Regional semifinal winners: Gonzaga, Creighton.

Purdue will be under plenty of pressure to avoid underachieving in the NCAA Tournament again. The Boilermakers get through the first weekend but fall short of an extended run.

Regional champion: Gonzaga. The Zags get a chance to fly under the radar this year, and with a shaky Kansas team near them in the bracket, there's a favorable path to the Sweet 16. If Gonzaga can get past Purdue, the Final Four is very much in play.

WEST REGION

First Four: Howard over Wagner.

First round winners: North Carolina, Michigan State, Saint Mary's, Alabama, New Mexico, Baylor, Nevada, Arizona.

Arizona is another team trying to rebound from a first-round loss in 2023, and top-seeded North Carolina returns after missing the tournament entirely last year.

Second round winners: Michigan State, Saint Mary's, New Mexico, Arizona.

It's almost a cliche to pick Tom Izzo's team to overachieve in March, but Michigan State's Pomeroy rank (18th) suggests the Spartans are dangerous as a No. 9 seed.

Regional semifinal winners: Michigan State, Arizona.

Here's a question you don't hear often: Can Michigan State hold its own against Saint Mary's on the boards? The numbers suggest it would be tough, but the Spartans pull it out with defense.

Regional champion: Michigan State. The Big Ten and SEC aren't making a lot of friends these days. The Spartans prevent them from getting shut out of the Final Four.

FINAL FOUR

Of the two underdogs in this Final Four, Gonzaga is more likely to advance because it can hurt Houston on the boards, but ultimately UConn and Houston survive to set up a matchup between two former American Athletic Conference teams.

The Huskies are probably the better all-around team, but it's just too hard to repeat. Houston wins it all.

- NOAH TRISTER
MAX SPORTShttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02741222531890195382noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2028570633750725291.post-66178061186251698752024-03-18T20:39:00.002+03:002024-03-18T20:39:13.399+03:00SWIATEK DOWNS SAKKARI TO WIN SECOND INDIAN WELLS TITLE

USA TODAY Sports

World number one Iga Swiatek dominated ninth seed Maria Sakkari to win the Indian Wells final 6-4 6-0 and claim the title for a second time in the California desert on Sunday.

In a rematch of the 2022 showpiece, Swiatek's precise serving and speedy defence proved too much for her Greek opponent and the Pole reeled off the final eight games to close out a tournament where she never dropped a set.

"I'm really proud of myself, I'm super happy," Swiatek told reporters.
