MESSI WINS RECORD EIGHTH BALLON D'OR FOR WORLD BEST PLAYER

Reuters

Argentina captain Lionel Messi won a record eighth Ballon d'Or for the best player in the world on Monday, beating Norway's UEFA player of the year and treble winner Erling Haaland of Manchester City to the prestigious prize.

Inter Miami's Messi, who last won the award in 2021, played a pivotal role in guiding Argentina to their first World Cup title in 36 years when they beat defending champions France in the final last year.

The 36-year-old is now three Ballons d'Or clear of rival Cristiano Ronaldo, who won the last of his five trophies in 2017. Messi has now finished among the top three a record 14 times in total, finishing runner-up on five occasions.

ITF WILL ENCOURAGE NADAL TO COMPETE AT PARIS

Reuters

Uncertainty surrounds the recovering Rafa Nadal's 2024 campaign but the International Tennis Federation (ITF) will do everything it can to encourage him to compete in the Paris Olympic Games, the global tennis body's chief David Haggerty told Reuters.

The 37-year-old former world number one has been sidelined since hurting his hip flexor in a second-round loss to Mackenzie McDonald at the Australian Open in mid-January and he is yet to confirm his plans for next season following surgery.

Nadal had previously said he expects to retire following the 2024 season and hoped to play in the Paris Games with the tennis tournament set to take place at Roland Garros, where he has won 14 of his 22 Grand Slam titles.

SOURCESk: CLIPPERS LAND JAMES HARDEN IN BLOCKBUSTER 76ERS

The LA Clippers acquired 10-time All-Star guard James Harden in a blockbuster trade with the Philadelphia 76ers on Monday night, sources told ESPN.

The 76ers sent Harden, P.J. Tucker and Filip Petrusev to the Clippers for Marcus Morris, Robert Covington, Nic Batum, KJ Martin, a 2028 unprotected first-round pick, two second-round picks, a 2029 pick swap and an additional first-round pick from the Oklahoma City Thunder, sources told ESPN.

The Clippers are sending a 2027 first-round pick swap to Oklahoma City, clearing the way for the Thunder to move a protected 2026 first-round pick to the 76ers, sources said. The Clippers are sending a 2024- and a 2029 second-round pick to the Sixers in the deal too, sources said.

The Sixers will waive veteran guard Danny Green to create the roster space for the trade, sources said.

U.S. Open champion Coco Gauff said she was "feeling the love" in rainy Cancun after her 6-0 6-1 demolition of Ons Jabeur in her first group stage match of the WTA Finals on Monday.

The start of the match was delayed and then later interrupted by rain when Gauff was leading 1-0 in the second set. She maintained her momentum when play resumed to claim a dominant win over her Tunisian Group B opponent.

SPAIN'S EX-FA CHIEF RUBIALES GETS THREE-YEAR BAN OVER KISS SCANDAL

Reuters

Luis Rubiales, the former president of the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) who faces accusations of sexual assault in Spain, has been banned from all football-related activities for three years, FIFA said on Monday.

World soccer's governing body initially suspended Rubiales for three months following the allegedly non-consensual kiss he gave to Spain player Jenni Hermoso after the Women's World Cup final on Aug. 20.

"The FIFA Disciplinary Committee has banned Luis Rubiales ... from all football-related activities at national and international levels for three years, having found that he acted in breach of article 13 of the FIFA Disciplinary Code," FIFA said in a statement.

Rubiales' lawyers declined to comment on the decision.

ARCHIVE PARITY

The "Me Too" moment in Spanish football had been building for nearly a decade as female players tried to combat sexism and achieve parity with their male peers.

That included two dressing-room rebellions that ended the international careers of several players.

They finally accomplished change thanks to an "exhausting" month-long standoff that ended in September when the RFEF agreed to make "immediate and profound changes" to its structure, the players said.

FIFA's decision means Rubiales, 46, can no longer run for the RFEF presidency or General Assembly under Spain's new electoral regime for sports federations presented last month by the country's National Sports Council (CSD).

CSD rules make ineligible anyone who has been sentenced by the disciplinary bodies of national or international federations or sports tribunals.

Rubiales resigned in September saying his position at the RFEF had become untenable. He had initially vowed not to stand down despite pressure from players, politicians and women's groups.

During his testimony to the court in the assault case, Rubiales denied Hermoso's accusations, according to the prosecutor's office. Rubiales has repeatedly said the kiss was consensual, while Hermoso says it was forced on her.

The investigating judge, who imposed a restraining order to prevent Rubiales from approaching Hermoso, also decided to expand the scope of the probe to include Jorge Vilda, the Spain squad's former coach who was sacked by interim RFEF president Pedro Rocha 10 days after FIFA suspended Rubiales from his post.

The coach was widely criticised for repeatedly applauding Rubiales during an emergency RFEF assembly in which the latter railed against "false feminism" and vowed not to resign.

"Mr Rubiales has been notified of the terms of the FIFA Disciplinary Committee’s decision today," FIFA said. "The decision remains subject to a possible appeal before the FIFA Appeal Committee."

TYSON FURY SURVIVES KNOCKDOWN, EDGES FRANCIS NGANNOU ON POINTS

In a shocking turn of events, Tyson Fury was forced to survive a third-round knockdown to eke past Francis Ngannou via split decision Saturday in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

One judge scored it 95-94 for Ngannou, the former UFC heavyweight champion, but was overruled by tallies of 96-93 and 95-94 for Fury. Fury's WBC heavyweight title wasn't on the line in the 10-round boxing match. Ngannou was making his pro boxing debut in his first fight since January 2022.

England's Fury was installed as a -1400 favorite to win the match. He moves on to an undisputed heavyweight championship fight against Oleksandr Usyk despite arguably his worst performance against Ngannou.

The Fury-Usyk fight, perhaps the biggest in boxing, is already signed and planned for Dec. 23 in Riyadh, but it's unclear if the fight will happen on that date. Fury was cut over his left eye and forehead and suffered damage against Ngannou. He would have to turn around and fight Usyk in less than two months.

EX-NHL PLAYER ADAM JOHNSON, 29, DIES IN 'FREAK ACCIDENT '

Icon Sportrwire

Former NHL player Adam Johnson died after a "freak accident" during his English team's game Saturday. He was 29.

The Nottingham Panthers, who play in England's Elite Ice Hockey League (EIHL), announced Sunday that the organization is "heartbroken at the news of Adam's passing."

Officials stopped the Panthers' game Saturday against the Sheffield Steelers after Johnson was involved in a collision on the ice during the second period. Johnson received emergency treatment on the ice, and players eventually returned to the locker room after he was taken to Sheffield's Northern General Hospital.

Nearly 8,000 fans at Sheffield's Utilita Arena were asked to leave the building because of what the Panthers announced as a "major medical emergency."

SPRINGBOKS BELIEF AND PHYSICALITY MAKE FOR WORLD BEATING MIX

Reuters

A record fourth Rugby World Cup showed South Africa's dogged determination, which saw the team dig deep at critical moments.

Few sides have had as bruising a route to World Cup success as the Springboks in this tournament, playing against each of the other top six ranked nations on their way to the podium.

That road, culminating in a 12-11 win over traditional foes New Zealand in Saturday's final at the Stade de France in Paris, but the Boks' tenacity took them over the line when it counted.

They edged three successive knockout stage matches by a single point to claim the Webb Ellis Cup.

The team talked of a responsibility to provide some distraction for their beleaguered South Africa, which is struggling in an economic downturn with heavy unemployment, crime and corruption.

But while that had its place in motivating success, a full-hearted approach on the field ultimately gave them the edge.

BRENTFORD STUN CHELSEA IN 2-0 WIN AT STAMFORD BRIDGE

Reuters

Brentford snatched a 2-0 win away at Chelsea on Saturday as the expensively assembled Blues failed to turn possession into goals once again and were punished by a thumping header from defender Ethan Pinnock and a last-minute breakaway goal by Bryan Mbeumo.

The west London derby defeat was yet another setback for Chelsea coach Mauricio Pochettino, whose side had shown signs of putting a poor start to the season behind them recently with two wins out of three and a 2-2 draw against Arsenal last weekend.

Arsenal striker Eddie Nketiah ended his scoring drought in stunning fashion with a hat-trick in his side's 5-0 home thrashing of hapless Sheffield United in the Premier League on Saturday.

The 24-year-old, who made his full England debut this month, had not scored for the Gunners since August and had recently lost his place in the starting line-up.

BRAZIL FINDS PAN AM GOLD AT THE BEACH AND IN THE RING

Reuters

From the beach to the ring Brazilians punched and spiked their way to Pan American Games gold on Friday as the first week of competition in chilly Santiago came to an end along with the United States gold rush.

Beach volleyball is considered a national pastime in Brazil and under the fog shrouded Andes mountains the top ranked women's pair of Patricia Ramos and Duda Lisboa and men's duo of Andre Stein and George Souto produced steely performances to return home with both titles.

On the other side of the Chilean capital Brazilian boxers were piling up 12 medals, including four gold, all from women, led by twice world champion and Olympic silver medallist Beatriz Ferreira.

World champions in 2022 before losing the title to the U.S. two weeks ago, Ramos and Lisboa were golden again as they beat the Canadian flag bearers Melissa Humana-Paredes and Brandie Wilkerson 2-0.

ARSENAL COULD BE WITHOUT FORWARD JESUS FOR WEEKS, SAYS ARTETA

Reuters

Arsenal could be without injured Gabriel Jesus for a "few weeks" manager Mikel Arteta said ahead of their game against Sheffield United, days after the Brazilian forward was the hero in the side's Champions League win over Sevilla.

"The scan showed there is a muscle injury," Arteta told reporters on Friday. "We might lose him for a few weeks. With Gabi, I cannot give you any time frame because he always surprises us."

"It's what we want to avoid but with the schedule that we have and the amount of games that we have, it's something that we knew was going to happen," Arteta said.

"It's happening to every club in the Premier League so there's no difference."

Jesus was forced off with a hamstring issue after scoring a goal and assisting another in Arsenal's 2-1 Champions League victory in Spain on Tuesday that took them top of Group B.

Midfielder Thomas Partey has also been ruled out for a couple of weeks due to a muscle injury.

"What we need is more players," Arteta said. "There's no secret, the players have a certain amount of energy and the battery only lasts so long or we will burn them out."

Arsenal sit third in the Premier League, just two points behind leaders Tottenham and level on points with Manchester City. Sheffield United are last with just a point after nine games.

Arteta said his team will not to take Sheffield United lightly, especially as they played well in a 2-1 loss to Manchester United last time out.

"The way they have played against all the other teams has been strong, they're clung on and then it's been late goals conceded," the Spaniard said. "They are fighting for their lives so it will be a tricky game.

"Everyone is on their toes, they know what is coming and I was very clear with them."

SHIFFRIN CAN REACH HER 100TH WIN THIS SEASON, SAYS MILLER

Reuters

U.S. ski great Bode Miller expects compatriot Mikaela Shiffrin to have another dominant season and would not be surprised if she crowns it by becoming the first Alpine skier to win 100 World Cup races.

The season starts in the Austrian resort of Soelden this weekend with men's and women's giant slaloms on the Rettenbach glacier.

Shiffrin has 88 career wins after breaking Ingemar Stenmark's long-standing record 86 last season, when she also took 14 victories over the course of the year.

The 28-year-old also took 17 wins in 2019, her most dominant season, and 12 in 2018.

SRI LANKA HEAPS MORE WORLD CUP MISERY ON ENGLAND WITH BIG WIN

Reuters

Sri Lanka breathed life into their World Cup campaign and left England in increasing danger of missing out on a semi-final spot after crushing the defending champions by eight wickets in a low-scoring match on Thursday.

Chasing a modest 157 for only their second win, Sri Lanka overcame the loss of two early wickets before Pathum Nissanka (77 not out) and Sadeera Samarawickrama (65 not out) got them across the finish line in 25.4 overs.

The pair played with plenty of patience in their 137-run partnership for the third wicket after an initial burst by David Willey (2-30) to ensure England suffered a third straight World Cup defeat for the first time since 2015.

The win lifted Sri Lanka to fifth in the table while England are ninth, ahead of only the Netherlands.

Sri Lanka earlier restricted England to a below-par 156 all out in 33.2 overs in the must-win clash between the tournament's stragglers, with only Ben Stokes offering some resistance in an otherwise dismal batting display.

Stokes (43) took the attack to Sri Lanka on a dry wicket at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium after England's middle-order collapsed in the face of some incisive bowling, but he holed out to Dushan Hemantha in the deep off Lahiru Kumara (3-35) in the 31st over.

SWISS PROSECUTORS END PROCEEDINGS AGAINST FIFA BOSS INFANTINO

Reuters

Criminal proceedings against FIFA President Gianni Infantino over his dealings with former Swiss attorney general Michael Lauber have been closed, Swiss prosecutors said on Thursday, a decision Infantino hailed as a vindication of "the new FIFA".

Infantino was elected in 2016 to clean up world soccer body FIFA after it became embroiled in corruption scandals.

However, Swiss authorities launched proceedings against Infantino himself in 2020 on suspicions of secrecy violations, abuse of office and aiding and abetting related to meetings he held with Lauber.

In ending the proceedings, prosecutors said their investigations had "invalidated" such suspicions.

Swiss-Italian Infantino, who had repeatedly denied any wrongdoing, said the decision was a "a full and clear victory for me, for the new FIFA and for justice."

VICTOR WEMBANYAMA FINISHES WITH 15 POINTS IN DEBUT AS SPURS LOSE

SAN ANTONIO -- As Victor Wembanyama walked on to the Frost Bank Center court during pregame warmups for his NBA regular-season debut, he spread his arms across the tunnel to high-five fans on both sides before taking the court.

Wembanyama's performance was hampered by foul trouble, but he gave the sold-out crowd of 18,947 quite the show in the fourth quarter before the Dallas Mavericks pulled away from Wembanyama's San Antonio Spurs with a 126-119 victory.

"Lots of emotions for sure," Wembanyama said after the game, "but it would have been perfect with a win."

INSIDE THE NBA DISCUSS VICTOR WEMBANYAMA

WEMBANYAMA IS A TALENT BEYOND COMPARE, SAYS YAO

France's Victor Wembanyama possesses a talent that defies comparison, retired great Yao Ming told Reuters, as the seven-foot four-inch (2.24-metre) rookie makes his highly anticipated National Basketball Association (NBA) regular-season debut on Wednesday.

Not since LeBron James 20 years ago has a prospect generated excitement on the level seen for the San Antonio Spurs' first overall pick, who will start at home against Texan rivals Dallas Mavericks after a remarkable preseason.

SECOND HALF SHOW EARNS SHANGDON WIN IN ASIAN CHAMPIONS LEAGUE

Shandong Taishan moved to the top of Group G of the Asian Champions League on Wednesday as Brazilian striker Cryzan and former Manchester United midfielder Marouane Fellaini scored in the second half to secure a 2-0 win over hosts Incheon United.

Cryzan came off the bench in the 55th minute and broke the deadlock three minutes later with a strike from distance that bent into the top corner before Fellaini scored from close range to confirm the three points for the Chinese Super League side.

The South Koreans led the standings ahead of the game but are now level on six points with Shandong, who move into pole position thanks to a better head-to-head record over Incheon and third-placed Yokohama F Marinos.

NBA 'FIRST CLASS' IN CHINA 🇨🇳 DESPITE PAST TURBULENCE, SAYS YAO

Reuters

The National Basketball Association (NBA) and China may have encountered turbulence in their relations over the years but retired great Yao Ming told Reuters the league is still "first class" in his home country.

Yao, the president of the Chinese Basketball Association, soared to stardom in the United States as the eight-time All-Star for the Houston Rockets, an affable, 7-foot, 6-inch NBA big man who dominated the league before retiring in 2011.

Yao propelled the league's popularity in his home country but relations between China and the NBA have not always been smooth.

Chinese broadcasters stopped airing Rockets games in 2019 after general manager Daryl Morey posted a message in support of anti-government protests in Hong Kong and, earlier this year, former NBA player Dwight Howard appeared in a promotional video in which he referred to Taiwan as a country, prompting backlash.

DOUBLE ALPS PORTION ON MEN'S TOUR MENU, WOMEN TO FINIFH AT L'ALPE D'HUEZ

Reuters

Next year's Tour de France will be a treacherous affair featuring two treks through the Alps as organisers avoid Paris ahead of the Summer Olympics, while the women's race will have a grand finale at L'Alpe d'Huez in August.

For the first time since its creation in 1903, the men's Tour will not finish in Paris with the winner being crowned in Nice after the race's first Grand Depart in Italy, Florence playing host for the world's greatest cycling race.

There will be four stages in Italy, with some great names being honoured as the second stage will start a few kilometres from the late Marco Pantani's birth town and finish in Rimini, where he died in 2004.

The peloton will enter the Alps as early as the fourth stage and will return for the final block of racing, which will be decided with a mountain stage ending at the Col de la Couillole (15.7km at 7.1%) and a hilly individual time trial between Monaco and Nice.

It will be the first time since 1989 that the last stage of the race will be actually competed.

TWENTY YEARS AFTER LEBRON'S DEBUT, VICTOR WEMBANYAMA ENTERS THE NBA SPOTLIGHT

LEBRON JAMES WAS experiencing a big moment, and his veteran teammates wanted to make it memorable, it being his first NBA game and all.

So they asked the 18-year-old rookie if he would take the honor of leading the Cleveland Cavaliers onto the floor for the preseason opener at the Palace of Auburn Hills that early October night in 2003.

James proudly ran out and got ready to start warmups before suddenly realizing he was by himself, a still sparse crowd looking at him awkwardly. Back in the tunnel, his teammates were roaring with laughter. Naïve and embarrassed, James could only shake his head at the joke.

Twenty years later to the week, there was no such hazing for San Antonio Spurs prized rookie Victor Wembanyama when he took an NBA court for the first time earlier this month in Oklahoma City.

His teammates have spoken of Wembanyama in recent weeks not like a kid brother -- which is how the Cavs handled James to the point that then-coach Paul Silas occasionally had to step in to defend him like a father figure in the early days -- but with a certain amount of awe. Things have changed, it seems, for phenom teenage rookies.

"I think he's just a freak of nature, it's not a normal thing to see," Spurs forward Jeremy Sochan said. "I'm here to help him."

"The days of treating [rookies] the same," veteran Spurs coach Gregg Popovich said, "left us long ago."

EVERTON CHAIRMAN KENWRIGHT DIES AT 78

Everton chairman Bill Kenwright has died at the age of 78, the Premier League club said on Tuesday.

Kenwright, who was Everton's longest serving chairman for more than a century, succeeded Philip Carter in 2004.

He passed away peacefully on Monday night, surrounded by his family and loved ones, Everton said.

DE KOCK'S 174 PROPELS SOUTH AFRICA TO 382 V BANGLADESHI

Reuters

South Africa opener Quinton de Kock smashed 174, the highest individual score at this year's World Cup, to propel his team to an imposing 382-5 against Bangladesh on Tuesday.

The left-handed batter clobbered seven sixes and 15 fours in 140 balls to overtake India's Virat Kohli as the tournament's leading scorer with three hundreds in five matches.

Aiden Markram, leading South Africa in the absence of the unwell Temba Bavuma, made 60 after winning the toss and electing to bat at the Wankhede Stadium.

Heinrich Klaasen provided the late surge with an explosive 90 off 49 balls to leave Bangladesh with a mountain to climb when they begin their chase.

De Kock, Klaasen and David Miller, who made 34 not out, smashed a combined 19 sixes in the match.

South Africa sit third, behind India and New Zealand, in the points table with the top four at the end of the group stage making the semi-finals.

SOCCER DAZN, SKY RETAIN ITALIAN SERIE A RIGHRS IN $4.8 BILLION DEAL

DAZN and Sky will keep the rights to screen live Serie A matches in Italy for the next five seasons after Italian clubs on Monday approved bids worth at least 4.5 billion euros ($4.8 billion), league officials said.

After four months of negotiations, the Serie A clubs had met in Milan on Monday to review final offers tabled by streaming services DAZN and Sky which amounted to some 900 million euros per year until the end of the 2028/2029 season, just below the annual value for the current agreement.

Seventeen of the 20 clubs backed the offer but the decision drew sharp criticism from Napoli owner Aurelio De Laurentiis.

NEW ZEALAND, SOUTH AFRICA TAKE ULTIMATE RIVALRY TO GRANDEST STAGE OF ALL

Reuters

For New Zealand and South Africa there is no bigger challenge than what both consider rugby’s greatest rivalry and the World Cup final on Saturday will be among their most significant clashes with each team seeking a record fourth global title. The rich history of this 102-year-old fixture has seen political turmoil, countless bruising battles, a previous World Cup final and even a 0-0 draw.

New Zealand have a sizeable lead in the head-to-head with 62 wins to South Africa’s 39 in 105 matches and are the only nation the Springboks have a negative win-loss ratio against.

Conversely, however, New Zealand’s lowest win percentage versus any opponents (59%) is against the Springboks.

South Africa captain Siya Kolisi calls it "the biggest sporting rivalry in history" while former New Zealand winger Jeff Wilson believes it is a thread that connects the two nations.

"It is such an important part of the two countries and how they are connected," Wilson said. "It is competitive on the field, but you can see off it there is a healthy respect."
