LATE NIGHT DRAMA AS BIZZARE SCENES UNFOLD DURING DANIIL MEDVEDEV'S US OPEN MATCH

The opening night session of the US Open 2025 at Flushing Meadows turned into pure chaos as Daniil Medvedev staged a dramatic comeback in the third set, against Frenchman Benjamin Bonzi, in a match that had everything—frustration, controversy, and even an unprecedented court invasion.

Bonzi came out firing, stunning the Russian top seed by taking the first two sets 6-3, 7-5. For Medvedev, who had already suffered a shocking first-round exit at this year’s French Open against Cameron Norrie, the prospect of another early Grand Slam disaster loomed large. For the first time in his career, he was staring at a first-round loss in New York.

Known for his raw emotions, Medvedev let his frustrations spill over throughout the night. At one point, he openly mocked Bonzi’s fist-pump celebrations, clearly trying to rattle his opponent while venting his own pent-up anger. For the Russian, the night session in New York has often been a stage of high octane drama—and this match was no different.

But the most bizarre twist came on match point for Bonzi. Just as the Frenchman prepared to serve, a photographer infiltrated the court in an unprecedented interruption. The incident forced the chair umpire to replay the point, awarding Bonzi a first serve back—a decision that sent Medvedev into an absolute meltdown.

The Russian’s protests fueled the already electric atmosphere inside Arthur Ashe Stadium. For over six long minutes, the match was halted as the crowd erupted in chants of “second serve!” and relentlessly booed, refusing to calm down.

When play finally resumed, the chaos seemed to weigh heavily on Bonzi. Distracted and rattled, he dropped the next two points, handing Medvedev a crucial break opportunity. Sensing his chance, the former US Open champion pounced, breaking serve to stay alive and flipping the momentum at the brink of defeat.

Medevedev dragged the match into a tie-breaker to stay afloat in the first round match, and secured two set points in a dramatic turnaround. Medevedev converted his second one and took the third set to keep his chances alive. Even fellow tennis players Taylor Fritz and Genie Bouchard took to twitter to voice their emotions.

And Taylor Fritz turned out to be right, as Medvedev breezed through the fourth set 6-0, as Bonzi struggled physically and mentally to stay in the match. He called for the physio to attend to his knee, and the focused and zoned in player that he was for the first two and a half sets, quickly crumbled under the lights.

Daniil Medvedev is still searching for his first ATP tournament victory this year after the world number five lost to Australia's Alexei Popyrin for the first time in his career at the Paris Masters on Wednesday.

Medvedev won the Paris title in 2020 but has not found the indoor tournament to his liking in recent years -- the defeat to Popyrin is the third successive time he has gone out in his opening round.

Popyrin, who has been in a rich vein of form this year winning his first Masters tournament in Montreal in August and beating Novak Djokovic in the US Open, edged Medvedev 6-4, 2-6, 7-6 (7/4) in a gripping second round match.

For Popyrin, ranked 24 in the world, it was only his third win over a player in the top five.

"It is the first time I have beaten him (in four meetings)," said Popyrin, who will play the winner of the match between France's Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard and Karen Khachanov of Russia.

"We have had some right old battles in the past and it is a real pleasure to have performed like this this time round."

Medvedev, who has already qualified for the season-ending Masters, fought back twice in the deciding set.

He came back from 4-1 down to force a tie-break and then trailing 4-1 in that he levelled at 4-4.

However, with Popyrin leading 5-4, Medvedev double-faulted giving the 25-year-old Australian two match points and he wasted no time in sealing the victory on the first one.

Medvedev is not the first high profile seed to fall at the first hurdle as his compatriot Andrey Rublev and Norway's Casper Ruud have already lost.

Carlos Alcaraz remains in the mix having won his first match on Tuesday and is favoured to take the title after Italian world number one Jannik Sinner withdrew from the tournament due to an intestinal virus.

Alcaraz will play France's Ugo Humbert in the third round, the French number one breezed past America's Marcos Giron 6-3, 6-2 on Wednesday.

A potential dark horse for the title is Bulgarian eighth seed Grigor Dimitrov who beat Tomas Martin Etcheverry 6-7 (9/11), 6-3, 7-5.

Dimitrov still has a chance of qualifying for the Masters, if he won the Paris title he would move past Djokovic (sixth), Ruud (seventh) and Rublev (eighth).

Just the top eight qualify for the climax to the ATP season in Turin.

"I would give a lot to be in (Turin)," said Dimitrov, who reached the Paris final last year.

"I'm in a place where I am still a contender, I'm still fighting against the best players in the world, and still beating the younger guys.

"This gives me confidence and makes me happy."

Germany's world number three Alexander Zverev is already booked into Turin and begins his Paris campaign later on Wednesday against the Netherlands' Tallon Griekspoor.

Daniil Medvedev believed he would have to play at an 11 out of 10 level on Friday if he was to beat world number one Carlos Alcaraz and get to the U.S. Open final for a third time.

The third seeded Russian would prevail 7-6(3) 6-1 3-6 6-3 in a fascinating encounter under Arthur Ashe Stadium's closed roof that ended Alcaraz's reign as Flushing Meadows champion, but to get the job done needed to up his game more than he thought.

"I said I needed to play 11 out of 10, I played 12 out of 10 - except the third set, that's the only way," Medvedev said in on-court remarks. "To beat him you need to be better than yourself and I managed to do it."

Medvedev's upset denied tennis fans the Alcaraz v Novak Djokovic blockbuster finish to the Grand Slam season they had been hoping to see.

A final involving former-U.S. Open champions Medvedev and three-time winner Djokovic on Sunday is one of obvious high quality but not the next chapter in tennis's hottest rivalry of Djokovic and Alcaraz that has had the sport buzzing.

Third seed Daniil Medvedev worked the U.S. Open graveyard shift again on Saturday beating in-form Sebastian Baez 6-2 6-2 7-6(6) to end the Argentine's 12-match winning streak and ease into the fourth round of the season's final Grand Slam.

It was the second straight match that Medvedev started a contest one day and finished the next, having gone four sets with Australian Christopher O'Connell in a late night battle on Thursday that wrapped early Friday morning.

World number one Carlos Alcaraz fended off in-form American Tommy Paul 7-6(6) 6-7(0) 6-3 to reach the Cincinnati Open quarter-finals on Thursday as other top seeds Daniil Medvedev and Greek Stefanos Tsitsipas were sent packing.

Alcaraz had not looked like himself in an uneven third round performance on Tuesday but was firing on all cylinders on Thursday as he harnessed his mighty forehand to chip away at Paul's defences in the rain-interrupted battle.

Paul cracked the code to beat the 20-year-old Spaniard earlier this month in Toronto but a handful more errors from the 14th seed this time around helped Alcaraz get the upper hand.
