ARMANI'S DEATH LEAVES MANY IN THE SPORTS WORLD TO PONDER AND PRAISE HIS LEGACY

Pat Riley first met Giorgio Armani in Milan in 1982, when the Italian designer told the then up-and-coming coach that he could make him beautiful suits.
Armani delivered. Riley was hooked.
“A navy blue Gable Classic,” Riley, now president of the Miami Heat, recalled Friday. “I have never worn anything else since then.”
Riley — a trendsetter in bringing high-end fashion to NBA sidelines — spent almost the entirety of his Hall of Fame coaching career wearing Armani, and he is one of many voices from around the sports world to offer memories in response to the iconic designer's passing. Armani died Thursday at the age of 91.
At the European basketball championships, Italy's national team played Thursday just hours after the news was announced. Much of Italy coach Gianmarco Pozzecco's pregame remarks before his squad faced Cyprus revolved not around the opponent, but Armani.
“This suit?” Pozzecco said afterward, tugging on the lapel of his jacket. “It's Armani.”
Like Riley, Pozzecco knew the designer. To wear the Armani brand, he said, is not only a source of personal pride — but one that is shared by all Italians.
Italy played Thursday with a black band on their uniforms to mourn Armani's death.
“Everybody in Italy loves him and I said to the players before the game that we have to play in the memory of Mr. Armani,” Pozzecco said. “I knew him personally. ... He makes all Italians feel proud, because of him.”
NBA star Russell Westbrook, a designer himself and one of the most fashion-savvy players in the league, paid tribute to Armani on Friday in his periodic newsletter. Westbrook often discusses fashion in his newsletters, sharing some trends that he's particularly fond of at a given time.
“Mr. Armani never stopped innovating, rewriting the rules of the suit for both men and women, and making his looks the most striking thing on any red carpet,” Westbrook wrote. “He really helped redefine elegance with timeless tailoring and understated luxury. In honor of him, stick to clean lines in order to elevate your look — elevating is what Armani always did.”
Armani was a regular attendee at basketball and soccer games all over Europe, had ties to some top clubs in both sports, had been an Olympic torchbearer and even was involved in outfitting Italian Olympic teams — including the uniforms they'll wear at the upcoming Milan-Cortina Games this coming winter.
He also had a passion for the Special Olympics, which paid tribute with a statement saying, “Giorgio Armani understood how the worlds of fashion and sport often intersected.”
“From designing uniforms for our Special Olympics athletes and featuring them on holiday cards, through to his fundraising leadership at our 2025 Winter World Games in Italy, Giorgio supported Special Olympics for over four decades,” the organization said. “His impact on our movement will last for generations.”
Riley called him “an absolute giant.”
“A true talent and once in a generation person that will never be equaled,” Riley wrote in a statement from himself and his wife, Chris. “Giorgio has inspired so many in the fashion world and has left big footprints to follow. What a legacy.

THE SIX LIVERPOOL PLAYERS WHO CURRENTLY DON'T QUALIFY FOR A PREMIER LEAGUE MEDAL 🥇
Liverpool have just claimed the Premier League title, although not all of their players currently qualify for a medal due to their lack of appearances.
According to the official Premier League website, players must make at least five league appearances to be guaranteed a winners’ medal.
In total, the club are given 40 medals that they can distribute among players, coaching staff and other employees at the club.
Players can still receive a medal, even if they don’t meet the threshold of appearances, although it is then at the discretion of the club as to who receives one.
As of writing, here are the six senior Liverpool stars who don’t currently qualify for a Premier League winners’ medal.
Federico Chiesa
As things stand, Liverpool’s only summer signing doesn’t automatically qualify for a Premier League medal.

The Italian winger has struggled with injuries throughout the campaign and has only made four substitute appearances, totalling a mere 33 minutes of Premier League football.
In order to qualify for a medal, he’ll need to feature in at least one of Liverpool’s remaining matches against Chelsea, Arsenal, Brighton or Crystal Palace.
Vitezslav Jaros
The Czech Republic shot-stopper has been behind Alisson Becker and Caoimhin Kelleher in the pecking order this season.
He did make a brief cameo against Crystal Palace back in October, although that won’t be enough for him to automatically qualify for a winners’ medal.
The club could still hand Jaros one of the spare medals they receive, although that’s at their discretion.
Jayden Danns
The 19-year-old made one Premier League appearance for Liverpool before being sent out on loan in January.
It remains to be seen whether Liverpool will give him a medal for the 10 minutes that he played against Ipswich at the start of the year.
Since being sent out on loan to Sunderland, Danns hasn’t made a single appearance in the Championship as a back injury has kept the teenager sidelined for the past few months.
Therefore, if Sunderland manage to win promotion via the playoffs, he likely won’t qualify for a medal with them either.
Tyler Morton
The 22-year-old has made five appearances for Liverpool this season, although none of them have been in the Premier League.

After spending the last couple of years out on loan in the Championship, Morton decided to stick around at Anfield and fight for his place under Arne Slot.
Most of his minutes this season have been in the Carabao Cup and he’s not played a Premier League match since 2021-22.
James McConnell
Like Morton, McConnell has racked up a few appearances for Liverpool this season, but they’ve all been in cup competitions.

The 20-year-old has made Liverpool’s Premier League matchday squad on four occasions this season, but he’s always been an unused substitute.
Trey Nyoni
Nyoni was on Liverpool’s bench against Manchester City, Newcastle, Fulham and Tottenham back in December, but he never made it onto the pitch.
The youngster has featured in the League Cup, FA Cup and Champions League this season, but that doesn’t qualify him for a Premier League medal.

The 2023-24 season is almost over with the battles for the major honours, European qualification, relegation and promotion pretty much settled.

France gets three automatic places, with fourth place entering the UCL in the third qualifying round.
Remarkably Brest were in fourth when the games on the final day entered the 90th minute. Brest scored to go level with Lille on points and goal difference, but Lille stayed third on head to head. Then Lille conceded at home in the fourth minute of added time, sending Brest directly into the Champions League group stage.

Former Italy boss Roberto Mancini said he aims to make history after being named the new head coach of the Saudi Arabia national team by the country's football federation on Sunday.
The Saudi FA gave no further details, but Italian media reported Mancini would leave for Riyadh on Monday to attend a presentation event and sign a contract until 2027 worth €25 million ($27 million) net per year. He will make his debut in the dugout on Sept. 8 against Costa Rica.
