JOOST VAN DER WESTHUIZEN: FORMER SOUTH AFRICAN RUGBY CAPTAIN PASSES AWAY AT 45


Former South African Rugby captain Joost van der Westhuizen has died at age 45...
He was suffering from a debilitating motor neuron disease that was diagnosed six years ago...He was one of the best scrum-halves in history with 89 international caps, scoring 38 tries...He won the 1995 World Cup with the Springboks on home soil after beating new Zealand in the final...He was named captain in the 1999 World Cup - whereby South Africa finished 3rd...He retired in 2003 after being beaten by New Zealand in the quarter-finals of the 2003 tournament...



"He was a world-class nine who was respected throughout the rugby world." said Wales interim coach Rob Howley...He went on to say "I have been fortunate enough to play against him and enjoy his company off the pitch and it is tragic he passed away so young."
