The Arsenal defender was hurt during the second leg of the Europa League clash with Atletico.
Arsene Wenger says his player in "devastated".
"Koscielny is devastated", said Wenger.
"People have always inflamed tendons but they don't rapture but in his case it went. I don't know why.
"The recovery will be full because the advantage of surgery is that it heals the inflamation."
Didier Deschamps, French coach, has confirmed that the defender will miss the 2018 Russia World Cup.
