INTERNATIONAL COURT OF APPEAL - HEARING AUGUST 25, 2026

The following hearing of the International Court of Appeal will take place in Paris:

Hearing

Case ICA-2026-06-07-08-09: Appeals lodged by McLaren Racing Limited and Red Bull Racing Limited against Decisions No. 1 and No. 2 of the Stewards contained in Document 99 of 12 June 2026 in respect of the 2026 Monaco Grand Prix, counting towards the 2026 FIA Formula One World Championship.

On 7 June 2026, having received reports from the Race Director of the 2026 Monaco Grand Prix, counting towards the 2026 FIA Formula One Word Championship, the Stewards decided to impose two 5-second time penalties to Car No. 10, driver Pierre Gasly (Documents 73 and 75) for pit-lane speeding during the Race, for recorded speeds of 60.1 km/h and 60.4 km/h respectively, in breach of Article B1.6.3a of the 2026 FIA Formula One Regulations - Section B.

On the same day, the Stewards received two petitions for Review under Article 14 of the FIA International Sporting Code from BWT Alpine F1 Team in respect of the aforementioned decisions of the Stewards of the 2026 Monaco Grand Prix.

On 12 June 2026, the Stewards determined that there was a significant and relevant new element that was unavailable to them at the time of their decisions contained in Documents 73 and 75. They decided to rescind both 5-second time penalties imposed on Car No. 10 (Document 99), amend the Race Classification (Document 100) and recalculate the Drivers’ and Constructors’ Championship points (Document 101).

On 16 June 2026, McLaren Racing Limited and Red Bull Racing Limited lodged an appeal against the above Stewards’ Decisions before the ICA.

EX-NFL STAR MARCELLUS WILEY | PROSECUTORS DROP DOMESTIC VIOLENCE CASE

Getty

Former NFL star Marcellus Wiley is no longer facing a criminal charge over an alleged domestic violence incident involving his estranged wife, Annemarie Wiley ... TMZ has learned.

According to court docs, obtained by TMZ, prosecutors in Orange County, Florida, told the court they would not be pursuing the case.

The filing states prosecutors declined to file charges because "testimonial evidence received is not corroborated by any physical or other evidence and is therefore insufficient to obtain a conviction."

In other words, it sounds like prosecutors didn't feel there was enough evidence for an easy conviction.

As TMZ first reported, Annemarie called cops after she claims things got physical inside a Florida hotel room. She told cops Marcellus poked her in the cheek and threatened to kill her.

Marcellus adamantly denied the claims.

Annemarie filed for divorce and a restraining order days later … claiming Marcellus was violent throughout their marriage. He has denied her claims.

The 32-year-old midfielder appeared before the Southwark Crown Court in London (United Kingdom) on Monday (13 April).

He denied twice raping a woman in the English capital in December 2020.

In July 2025, Partey was already charged with five counts of rape and one count of sexual assault, relating to alleged incidents from 2021 and 2022, Sky Sports reported.

He also pleaded not guilty to those charges.

The new accusations were announced in February. On Monday, Judge Tony Baumgartner agreed for all the charges to be tried together, possibly delaying the trial until January 2027.

In total, the former Arsenal player faces seven allegations of rape and one of sexual assault from four different women. He denies all the accusations.

“Thomas Partey continues to deny all charges against him. He has cooperated with the police throughout,” his lawyer Jenny Wiltshire said on Monday.

Partey, who joined La Liga club Villareal last summer, remains out on bail throughout the legal proceedings.

The Ghana midfielder is expected to play in the upcoming FIFA World Cup starting in June, although a new muscle injury is raising concerns regarding his participation.

In the meantime, Partey’s case is due to be listed in court for a pre-trial hearing on 14 May, according to Sky Sports.

KYLIAN MBAPPÉ OWED 60 MILLION EUROS BY PSG, FRENCH COURT SAYS

Paris Saint-Germain ordered to pay superstar forward now at Real Madrid unpaid salary and bonuses.

A Paris labour court has ordered Paris Saint-Germain to pay Kylian Mbappe 60 million euros ($70.6m) in unpaid salary and bonuses, bringing a partial end to one of the most acrimonious disputes in French football.

The ruling on Tuesday followed months of legal wrangling after the France striker took PSG to court over earnings he said were withheld for April, May and June 2024, shortly before he left the Ligue 1 club to join Real Madrid on a free transfer.

“We are satisfied with the ruling. This is what you could expect when salaries went unpaid,” Mbappe’s lawyer Frederique Cassereau told reporters.

The court found PSG had failed to pay three months of Mbappe’s salary, an ethics bonus and a signing bonus due under his employment contract.

Those sums were recognised as due by two decisions of the French Professional Football League in September and October 2024, and the judges said PSG had not produced any written agreement showing Mbappe had waived his entitlement.

The judges rejected PSG’s arguments that Mbappe should forfeit his unpaid wages entirely but also dismissed several of the player’s additional claims, including allegations of concealed work, moral harassment and breach of the employer’s duty of safety.

The court did not view Mbappe’s fixed-term contract as a permanent one, a decision that limited the scale of potential compensation related to dismissal and notice pay.

‘Labour law applies to everyone’

“This judgment confirms that commitments entered into must be honoured. It restores a simple truth: even in the professional football industry, labour law applies to everyone,” Mbappe’s legal team said in a statement.

“Mr. Mbappe, for his part, scrupulously respected his sporting and contractual obligations for seven years, right up to the final day.”

PSG had argued that Mbappe acted disloyally by concealing for nearly a year his intention not to renew his contract, preventing the club from securing a transfer fee similar to the 180 million euros ($212m) they paid to sign him from AS Monaco in 2017.

Mbappe’s representatives said the dispute concerned the strict application of French labour law and unpaid remuneration rather than transfer policy.

INQUEST INTO RICKY HUTTON'S DEATH REVEALS HE WAS FOUND BY MANAGER

The 46-year-old was discovered “unresponsive” by his manager, Paul Speak, on the morning of Sunday, September 14th, at his house in Hyde, Greater Manchester, Stockport Coroner’s Court was told. Photo: PA

Former boxing world champion Ricky Hatton was found hanged at his home, a coroner’s court heard.

The 46-year-old was discovered “unresponsive” by his manager, Paul Speak, on the morning of Sunday, September 14th, at his house in Hyde, Greater Manchester, Stockport Coroner’s Court was told.

The details were given during a brief 10-minute hearing as the inquest into the death of the popular former boxer was opened and adjourned until March 20th next year, by Alison Mutch, senior coroner for Manchester South.

The court heard some details of the discovery of Hatton’s body given by police coroner’s officer Alison Catlow.

The court was told Hatton was last seen by his family on September 12th when he appeared “well”.

But the day after he did not attend an event as expected and on the morning of the 14th his manager arrived at his home to take him to Manchester Airport to catch a flight to Dubai.

Hatton was found unresponsive.

Ms Mutch said: “The provisional cause of death is given as hanging.”

There were no family members present for the hearing, but Ms Mutch said Mr Speak was attending on behalf of the family.

He sat before the bench, with around 20 reporters sitting behind him listening to proceedings.

The coroner told Mr Speak: “If I could just ask you to pass on my condolences to his family at this time.”

Ms Mutch continued: “This is a straightforward legal step that the law does require you to take to move on to the inquest next year.”

The address of Hatton was given and his occupation as a boxing trainer and company director.

She said Hatton was identified to police by Mr Speak.

Ms Mutch continued: “In relation to Mr Hatton’s death, I think it’s right, it was Mr Speak who found him?”

Ms Catlow replied: “That’s correct.”

Ms Mutch then asked for a “brief indication of the circumstances” of the death.

Ms Catlow said: “Mr Hatton lived alone. He was last seen on the evening of the 12th of September by his family when he appeared well.

“On Saturday, September 13th, he did not attend an event as expected.

“On the morning of September 14th, his manager arrived at his home address to take him to Manchester Airport for a flight to Dubai.

“Mr Hatton was found unresponsive.”

Hatton’s death left his family heartbroken and his army of fans stunned.

A proud Mancunian and avid Manchester City supporter, tributes poured in from across the world of boxing and the wider sporting community.

Last week, celebrities including Oasis frontman Liam Gallagher, former England and Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney and his wife Coleen, and boxers Tyson and Tommy Fury attended a memorial service at Manchester Cathedral.

Likeable, humble and a joker, Hatton, also known as “The Hitman”, was regarded as a “People’s Champion” and adored by thousands of fans.

His all-action fighting style and down-to-earth demeanour made him one of the most popular fighters on both sides of the Atlantic.

Hatton’s family insisted the former world champion was “in a good place”, a doting father and grandfather, who had plans for the future including his bags packed for a comeback fight in Dubai in December.

But Hatton had also been candid about his mental health struggles with drink and drugs and past suicide attempts after he retired from the ring for a second time following an ill-advised comeback in 2012.

EX-ARSENAL ACE THOMAS PARTEY PLEADS NOT GUILTY TO RAPE CHARGES HOURS AFTER PLAYING AGAINST SPURS

Former Arsenal footballer Thomas Partey has pleaded not guilty to raping two women.

The 32-year-old is accused of five counts of rape against the two alleged victims, as well as a charge of sexual assault against a third woman.

The alleged offences took place between 2021 and 2022 when he played for Arsenal.

Partey spoke only to confirm his name, date of birth and his not guilty pleas during a short hearing at Southwark Crown Court on Wednesday.

The Ghanaian midfielder, who now plays for Spanish club Villarreal, faces trial under a High Court judge at the same court on November 2 next year.

Partey's latest court appearance comes hours after he came on as a substitute in his new club's Champions League fixture against Tottenham in London.

At the conclusion of the hearing, Judge Christopher Hehir told Partey: "Your trial will take place at this court on November 2 of next year, 2026.

"I appreciate that is quite a long way in advance. As you may appreciate the crown courts have a huge backlog of work which means that trials do take a long time to come on.

Villarreal's Thomas Partey during the warm down after their Champions League match at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, London on Tuesday night.

"Because you have bail effectively you are sitting behind a queue of people in prison who are waiting to be tried."

The judge granted bail on the same conditions as Partey was placed under at a previous hearing - that he cannot contact any of the three women and must notify police of any permanent changes of address or international travel.

Partey, who previously gave his address as Potters Bar in Hertfordshire, joined Arsenal from Atletico Madrid in 2020 in a transfer worth around £45million.

The Ghanaian international played 35 games for the north London club in the Premier League last season, scoring four goals.

He has made more than 50 appearances for Ghana, including at the World Cup and the Africa Cup of Nations.

An Arsenal spokesperson previously said: "The player's contract ended on June 30. Due to ongoing legal proceedings, the club is unable to comment on the case."

SHAWN KEMP SENTENCED TO 30 DAYS HOME CONFINEMENT ... In Parking Lot Shooting Case

Shawn Kemp Sentenced To 30 Days Home Confinement In Parking Lot Shooting Case

Shawn Kemp has been sentenced to 30 days in jail in his parking lot shooting case -- though the former NBA superstar will be allowed to serve the time at home.

A Pierce County judge handed down the ruling late Friday afternoon ... and the ex-Seattle Supersonic looked stoic as he learned his fate.

Kemp appeared at the proceedings in a navy suit jacket, tan pants, white shirt and light blue tie ... and told the courtroom just before he was sentenced that he was "very apologetic" for the behavior that led to prosecutors filing the criminal charges against him.

The case, of course, stemmed from an incident at a Tacoma shopping mall back in 2023, when Kemp was accused of firing a gun at two men who had allegedly stolen some of his items -- including a phone.

Kemp had at first pleaded not guilty and argued he was acting is "self-defense." But in May, he pleaded guilty to a lesser charge of assault in the second degree to close out the matter.

Prosecutors had been seeking a sentence of nine months behind bars for Kemp. The ex-basketball player's attorneys argued he should receive no additional time.

Kemp had several friends supporting him in court, including former NFL superstar Marshawn Lynch.

The judge admonished Kemp for his actions, saying, "I cannot state strongly enough this could have been easily avoided by simply walking away. Property is replaceable, human life is not." He also sentenced Kemp to 12 months of community custody -- which is a form of supervised release in Washington -- in addition to the 30 days of home confinement.

Kemp will also have to serve 240 hours of community service.

WIFE OF LATE PADRES OWNER PETER SEIDLER SUES FOR CONTROL OF TEAM

Manny Machado and Sheel Seidler

Sheel Seidler, the widow of late San Diego Padres chairman Peter Seidler, sued two of his brothers Monday in an attempt to become the team's control person.

In a complaint filed in Texas probate court, Sheel Seidler claims she and her three children have been "effectively ostracized" from the organization since Peter Seidler's death 14 months ago. The suit names Robert and Matthew Seidler as defendants, accusing the brothers of "fiduciary breaches of trust, fraud, conversion and egregious acts of self-dealing" in their roles as trustees and executors of Peter Seidler's estate.

The Padres announced Dec. 21 that Peter's oldest brother, John Seidler, would become the team's control person, which Sheel opposed and claims went against her late husband's wishes.

In a statement, Sheel called her complaint "a very last resort" to "protect my family and to continue to carry out Peter's legacy."

"[A]s the holder of the largest individual ownership stake in the San Diego Padres, and the sole beneficiary of the Seidler Trusts, which possesses exclusive rights with respect to control of the franchise, I am seeking to be named the control person for the Padres," Sheel Seidler wrote as part of her statement.

A spokesperson for the Padres declined to comment, citing the team's stance regarding pending legal matters. Representatives for Robert and Matthew Seidler could not immediately be reached for comment. A Major League Baseball official also declined comment.

Peter Seidler, a two-time cancer survivor, died from complications of an infection on Nov. 14, 2023, leaving behind Sheel and their children, now ages 4, 9 and 11. Eric Kutsenda, a longtime friend and business partner, was named interim control person before essentially turning responsibilities over to John Seidler 13 months later.

Sheel Seidler's complaint claims assurances from Peter's brothers that they would act for the benefit of Sheel and the children have "shown to be hollow" in the wake of his death.

Matthew and Robert Seidler "not only disregarded the clear terms and purpose of the will and trust instrument that Peter created, but they also have intentionally schemed to take for themselves the estate and Seidler trusts' value rights and assets," the complaint states. "They have done so by misleading Sheel, engaging in conflicted transactions and egregious acts of self-dealing, and when Sheel began expressing concern and questioning their actions, they responded by demeaning and attempting to intimidate her -- including by using trust assets to pay lawyers to threaten her into submission and silence."

"They are trying to erase Peter's vision and legacy," another part of the complaint reads, "as well as falsely cast themselves as Peter's true heirs."

Under Peter Seidler, the Padres became a financial juggernaut, signing and retaining stars and placing themselves alongside big spenders such as the New York Yankees and the Los Angeles Dodgers. Fans rallied around the team, setting attendance records at Petco Park.

Peter Seidler, grandson of prominent former Dodgers owner Walter O'Malley, was part of a group that purchased the Padres in 2012 and assumed the role as chairman eight years later, becoming the organization's largest stakeholder. The pinnacle of Peter's ownership tenure arrived in October 2022 when the Padres defeated the rival Dodgers -- once deemed by Peter as "the dragon up the freeway that we're trying to slay" -- in the National League Division Series, before being eliminated the following round.

In the first offseason after Seidler's death, the Padres, who by that point had lost their local media contract through Diamond Sports Group's bankruptcy proceedings, decreased payroll by about one-third.Padres general manager A.J. Preller nonetheless fielded a competitive team in 2024 that won 93 games, made the playoffs for the third time in five years and almost defeated the Dodgers in the NLDS once again.

Seidler often expressed his hope to bring San Diego, a city that lost its NFL team, its first championship. Sheel Seidler believes she is the person to help bring that dream to fruition.

"While the children and I feel Peter's absence every day, our collective devotion to this team is stronger than ever," Sheel Seidler wrote. "Peter and I always planned, one day, to leave the team to the children. That remains my steadfast commitment. In the meantime, it is my intention to build upon the many recent successes, investing in both the short-term and long-term future of the franchise, and ensuring our dream of multiple championships is fulfilled.

"John Seidler's appointment as control person is still pending the approval of three-quarters of MLB's owners. A vote hasn't been scheduled but could take place as early as the upcoming owners meetings in February.

Sheel Seidler's complaint alleges that she and her three children are not welcomed at the ownership suite during games and that Robert and Matthew Seidler have gone as far as to "inform Padres employees that Sheel is not an owner of the team, and that her presence and input are not welcome in interacting with free agents and current players.

"Sheel Seidler also claims to have been excluded from charitable events meant to mark Peter Seidler's legacy.

The complaint includes what is said to be a handwritten note from Peter Seidler listing the priorities for control person in the event of his death, with Sheel and the children at the top.

Sheel Seidler and the children own approximately one-quarter of the Padres, fulfilling MLB's requirement of at least a 15% stake to qualify as a control person. But Matthew and Robert Seidler have "frozen Sheel out," according to the complaint, and "deprived her of the benefits of being the largest beneficial owner of the baseball team, while themselves enjoying the benefits."

MIKE TYSON SUED IN LONDON FOR DITCHING PROMOTION DEAL TO FIGHT JAKE PAUL

Mike Tyson is being sued in a London court for nearly 1.5 million euros ($1.59 million) for allegedly breaking a deal to promote a gambling company in order to fight social media influencer-turned-prizefighter Jake Paul.

Medier, a Cyprus-registered company that promotes online casino and betting company Rabona, is suing the former heavyweight champion and his company Tyrannic for allegedly reneging on the deal, which was agreed in January.

The lawsuit, filed at London's High Court in October, says Tyson terminated the deal in March – the same day his fight with Paul was announced – because Medier breached their agreement.

Medier's lawyers, however, argue its actions did not constitute a breach of the deal and that Tyson's breach of contract has caused Medier losses of around 1.46 million euros.

"The true reason for Mr Tyson and Tyrannic's hasty and unlawful termination was because Mr Tyson had agreed a deal, sponsored by Netflix, to fight the influencer Jake Paul," the company's lawyer said in documents made public on Friday.

Tyson and Tyrannic have yet to file a defence to the lawsuit and Tyson was not immediately available to comment.

Paul, 27, beat the 58-year-old Tyson by unanimous decision in Texas last month, in a fight streamed live on Netflix that failed to live up to its enormous hype.

USOPC TO APPEAL AFTER IOC SAYS JORDAN CHILES MUST RETURN BRONZE

Jordan Chiles also was part of the United States' gold medal win in the team competition. Jamie Squire/Getty Images

PARIS -- U.S. Olympic officials say they will appeal a court ruling that resulted in American gymnast Jordan Chiles being asked to return the bronze medal she won in the Paris Olympics floor exercise.

The Court of Arbitration for Sport on Saturday voided an on-floor appeal by Chiles' coach that vaulted her to third, saying the appeal came 4 seconds beyond the 1-minute time limit for scoring inquiries.

The International Gymnastics Federation said Saturday night that it would respect the court's decision and elevate Barbosu to third. The International Olympic Committee confirmed the ruling Sunday, announcing that it was reallocating the bronze from Monday's women's floor final to Romanian Ana Barbosu.

"We firmly believe that Jordan rightfully earned the bronze medal, and there were critical errors in both the initial scoring by the International Gymnastics Federation (FIG) and the subsequent CAS appeal process that need to be addressed," the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Committee said in a statement Sunday.

The IOC said in a statement that it would be in touch with the USOPC regarding the return of Chiles' bronze and would work with the Romanian Olympic Committee to discuss a reallocation ceremony honoring Barbosu.

"The initial error occurred in the scoring by FIG, and the second error was during the CAS appeal process, where the USOPC was not given adequate time or notice to effectively challenge the decision," the USOPC said in its statement.

It was unclear the exact process the appeal would take first. The two potential places the USOPC could take the appeal would be to Switzerland's highest court, the Swiss Tribunal, or the European Court of Human Rights.

The CAS wrote Saturday that the initial finishing order should be restored, with Barbosu third, Romanian Sabrina Maneca-Voinea fourth and Chiles fifth. The organization added that the FIG should determine the final ranking "in accordance with the above decision" but left it up to the federation to decide who would get the medal behind gold winner Rebeca Andrade of Brazil and silver medalist Simone Biles of the U.S.

The FIG said it was the IOC's call on whether to reallocate the medal. The IOC confirmed Sunday that it would respect the FIG's decision and seek to have Chiles' medal returned.

The rapid turn of events adds another layer to what has been a difficult few days for all three athletes.

Romanian gymnastics legend and 1976 Olympic champion Nadia Comaneci feared for Barbosu's mental health because of the wrenching sequence in which she went from bronze medalist to fourth-place finisher.

"I can't believe we play with athletes mental health and emotions like this... let's protect them," Comaneci posted on X earlier in the week.

Comaneci, at the same time, criticized the judges for the way they scored Maneca-Voinea's routine. The gymnast was docked 0.1 points for stepping out of bounds, but replays showed she narrowly stayed inbounds. Comaneci urged the Romanian Olympic Committee to protest, which it did, but the CAS denied that appeal.

Chiles had hinted at the decision in an Instagram story Saturday, indicating she was heartbroken and was "taking this time and removing myself from social media for my mental health, thank you."

Jazmin Chiles, Jordan's sister, said on Instagram that Chiles was stripped of a medal "not because she wasn't good enough. But because the judges failed to give her difficulty and forced an inquiry to be made."

U.S. teammates offered support to Chiles, a two-time Olympian.

"Sending you so much love Jordan," Biles posted in an Instagram story. "Keep your chin up 'Olympic champ' we love you."

"All this talk about the athlete, what about the judges?" six-time Olympic medalist Sunisa Lee added on her Instagram story. "Completely unacceptable, this is awful and i'm gutted for jordan."

USA Gymnastics had said in a statement Saturday that it was "devastated" by the court's ruling.

"The inquiry into the Difficulty Value of Jordan Chiles' floor exercise routine was filed in good faith and, we believed, in accordance with FIG rules to ensure accurate scoring," the organization wrote.

Barbosu and Maneca-Voinea had been left outside the medals in the floor final after finishing with matching scores of 13.700. Barbosu thought she had won bronze over Maneca-Voinea via a tiebreaker -- a higher execution score -- and began celebrating with a Romanian flag.

Chiles was the last athlete to compete and initially given a score of 13.666 that placed her fifth behind Maneca-Voinea. Landi called for an inquiry after Chiles' score was announced.

"At this point, we had nothing to lose, so I was like, 'We're just going to try,'" Landi said after the awards ceremony. "I honestly didn't think it was going to happen, but when I heard her scream, I turned around and was like, 'What?'"

Judges awarded the appeal, leapfrogging Chiles past Barbosu and Maneca-Voinea.

Barbosu made it a point after returning home to Romania that she had no problem with Chiles.

"I only want for everybody to be fair. We don't want to start picking on other athletes of any nationality," Barbosu told reporters. "We as athletes don't deserve something like that. We only want to perform as best as we can and to be rewarded based on our performance. The problems lie with the judges, with their calculations and decisions."

Chiles' mother, Gina, called out critics in a post, writing she was "tired" of the derogatory comments being leveled at Jordan.

"My daughter is a highly decorated Olympian with the biggest heart and a level of sportsmanship that is unmatched," Gina Chiles posted. "And she's being called disgusting things."

The uncertainty also tinges what had been a beautiful moment on the medal stand, when Chiles and Biles knelt to honor Andrade after the Brazilian star won her fourth medal in Paris.

"It was just the right thing to do," Biles said about a moment that soon went viral, with even the Louvre suggesting it might be worthy enough for a spot somewhere in the vicinity of the Mona Lisa.

That memory now carries a complicated and emotional postscript.

GERMAN COURT DROPS CASE AGAINST ALEXANDER ZVEREIV AFTER SETTLEMENT WITH EX-PARTNER

Getty

BERLIN (AP) — Tennis star Alexander Zverev has settled a domestic abuse case after reaching an out-of-court settlement with his former partner, who accused him of assaulting her.

A district court in Berlin ended the trial on Friday with the agreement of state prosecutors and lawyers for Zverev and his former partner Brenda Patea, German news agency dpa reported.

Zverev agreed to pay fines of 150,000 euros ($162,000) to the state and 50,000 euros ($54,000) to charitable organizations.

Zverev, the world No. 4, was facing a charge of causing bodily harm to Patea during an argument in Berlin in May 2020. Prosecutors alleged he pushed her against a wall and choked her. Zverev always denied any wrongdoing.

The matter came to trial after Zverev contested a penalty order issued last October, including a requirement for him to pay fines amounting to 450,000 euros ($490,000). Penalty orders are used in Germany as a means of resolving some criminal cases without going to trial if the suspect does not contest the order.

Judge Barbara Lüders told the court she was dropping the case after lawyers for Zverev and Patea held talks in recent days about ending their disputes “at all levels in which there were disagreements in recent years.”

The former couple wanted to end their public feud and “look forward,” also in regard to “their joint custody of their child,” Lüders said.

Zverev indicated before the ongoing French Open that he was confident he would be cleared.

“At the end of the day, I do believe in the German system. I do believe in the truth, as well," he said.

Zverev, who was to face Norway’s Casper Ruud in the French Open semifinals on Friday, did not appear before the court. Patea testified as a witness in a session that was closed to the public.

“It remains unclear what happened,” dpa reported a court spokeswoman as saying on Friday.

Zverev’s lawyers, Anna Sophie Heuchemer and Katharina Dierlamm, issued a statement after the case was dropped stressing their client's presumption of innocence.

“Alexander Zverev agreed to this discontinuation through his defense attorney solely to shorten the proceedings — above all in the interest of their child. Alexander Zverev is still considered innocent," the lawyers said. “The discontinuation does not constitute a finding of guilt or an admission of guilt. The legal presumption of innocence remains unaffected.”

A lawyer for Patea did not immediately return calls seeking comment.

Zverev previously denied abuse allegations from another former girlfriend, Olga Sharypova, who first made the accusations in 2020 and followed up in 2021 with a detailed account in a Slate.com article that was taken down because of a preliminary injunction issued by a German court. Slate said it stood by the article.

Sharypova accused Zverev of attempted to strangle her with a pillow and hitting her head against a wall at a New York hotel in 2019. She said she feared for her life.

The allegations prompted the men’s professional tennis tour, the ATP, to investigate her claims. It ended 15 months later, in January 2023, with the ATP saying there was “insufficient evidence” to substantiate the claims.

SOCCER STAR DANI ALVES FOUND GUILTY OF RAPE, SENTENCED TO FOUR AND A HALF YEARS IN PRISON

AP Photo

BARCELONA, Spain (AP) — Dani Alves, one of the most successful soccer players of his generation, was found guilty of raping a woman in a Barcelona nightclub and sentenced to four years and six months in prison on Thursday.

Besides disgracing the former Brazil and Barcelona right back, the conviction was applauded in Spain as a victory for a pioneering sexual liberty law that emphasises the lack of consent of the victim as key to determining sex crimes.

A three-judge panel at the Barcelona Provincial Court convicted the 40-year-old Alves of sexual assault for the incident on Dec. 31, 2022.

The court ordered Alves to pay 150,000 euros ($162,000) in compensation to the victim, banned him from approaching the victim’s home or place of work, and from communicating with her by any means for nine years.

“I still believe in the innocence of Mr. Alves,” Inés Guardiola, Alves' lawyer, said. “I need to study the ruling, but I can tell you that of course we will appeal.”

Guardiola said Alves was “calm and collected" when he heard the verdict in court.

“We are satisfied," David Sáenz, a member of the victim’s legal team, said, "because this verdict recognizes what we have always known, that the victim told the truth and that she has suffered."

The victim’s lawyer, Ester García, said on Wednesday she and her client would not be present for the verdict.

The victim said Alves raped her in the bathroom of a Barcelona nightclub on the morning of Dec. 31, 2022. The court considered it proven that the victim did not consent to sex and there was evidence, in addition to the defendant’s testimony, that she was raped.

Alves denied during the three-day trial this month that he raped the woman, testifying to the court “I am not that kind of man.”

NEPAL'S LAMICHHANE SENTENCES TO EIGHT YEARS IN JAIL AFTER RAPE CONVICTION
