Daniel Dubois accuses Fabio Wardley of being disrespectful

Daniel Dubois (22-3, 21 KOs) addressed Fabio Wardley (20-0-1, 19 KOs) over his disrespectful comments during yesterday's final press conference in Manchester, ahead of their May 9 world heavyweight championship clash, "By the way, I heard you call me the dust man, and I'm gonna collect the trash, boy!"

During a fight week interview, the WBO world heavyweight champion was asked to assign Dubois an occupation in a playful scenario where he wasn't a professional boxer. Wardley guessed that he would likely be a binman.

Dubois did not take the comment well, "Na, it's disrespect, so I'm going to put it right in the ring, boy. I'm gonna bust his bubble anyway. That's what I've got to do."

Wardley replied back, "What did you say, dustman? I didn't call you the dustman. Someone asked me what you might have as a job and I said, 'He might be a binman'.

"There was no negative with that, don't let other people get into your head and tell you what it comes across like," Fabio advised.

Dubois interrupted him, "Na, I heard what you said. It's disrespect."

"You didn't hear it," Wardley quickly replied. "You didn't hear what I said because you don't run your own social media. So you didn't hear it. You let other people talk to you and tell you what you should be like. It wasn't like that. I just asked what job you might have and I said a binman. I didn't say it was a bad job."

A former recruitment consultant, Ipswich's Wardley is unbeaten in 21 contests and has won English, British, Commonwealth, two Interim world titles, and a WBO World heavyweight title, which is remarkable considering he had just four white collar bouts behind him and didn't start boxing until his 20s.

Dubois is the opposite to that, he has been boxing since he was a kid, had a stellar amateur career winning 69 from 75 bouts, collecting national and international titles. He turned pro to much acclaim after famously dropping the reigning IBF world heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua in sparring as a teenager. Promoter Frank Warren built him with the moniker #everybelt, which came to fruition as he currently has at least 14 titles in his trophy cabinet, which includes the WBA Regular and IBF World heavyweight titles.

Their collision this Saturday night in Manchester is set to produce fireworks with both explosive heavyweights sharing a powerful 95% HO ratio, hence why the event is called, 'Don't Blink'.

TOUR DE FRANCE 2027 ROUTES REVEALED WITH STARTS IN EDINBURGH AND LEEDS

 

The 2027 Tour de France will head through Carlisle, Keswick, Liverpool and Welshpool after starting out in Edinburgh next July before finishing in Cardiff.

And the 2027 Tour de France Femmes avec Swift, heading to the United Kingdom for the first time, will depart from Leeds later in July and take in Manchester and Sheffield before finishing in London.

Tour organisers announced the Grand Depart start and finish locations for both races in Leeds on Thursday, having revealed in March that Scotland, England and Wales will share six stages of one of the world’s biggest free-to-watch sporting event.

It will be the first time the two races have started in the same country other than France.

The UK will host the men’s event for the fifth time – the first was in Plymouth in 1974 – and will start the race for a third time after London in 2007 and Leeds in 2014.

Tour director Christian Prudhomme said: “The UK has always welcomed the Tour with passion and pride, and the route details we are revealing reflect the beauty and diversity of Britain’s terrain.

“Bringing both Grand Departs here is a testament to the strength of our partnership with British Cycling and the enthusiasm of the UK.”

Crowds totalling 2.5 million lined the route when the first two stages of the Tour were held in Yorkshire in 2014 and organisers are expecting a similarly spectacular turn out next year.

Prudhomme told the Press Association: “There’s going to be double the impact because we also have the women’s race in Leeds, Sheffield, Manchester and London, as well as the men’s race.

“It will be huge. The previous two grand departs in the UK, in London in 1977 and in Yorkshire in 2014 were unforgettable.”

When asked why it has taken so long for the Tour to return, Prudhomme added: “Because thanks to London, thanks to Yorkshire, we have more bids than before.

“We have bids from almost everywhere in Europe, for example, the Czech Republic – the guy we saw there was the Prime Minister – and Slovenia. They all want the tour at the start in their country.

“It was not the case before 2014, so thanks to the huge success of Yorkshire we have many more bids and bids presented by the highest level in each country.”

The Tour de France Femmes, brought under the same organisation as the men’s race in 2022, will start outside of France for the third time following the Netherlands in 2024 and Switzerland in 2025.

Tour de France Femmes director Marion Rousse said: “The UK has played an important role in the history of women’s cycling, with champions such as Lizzie Armitstead-Deignan.

“Starting the Tour de France Femmes in Leeds is a strong choice, closely linked to this heritage and to the enthusiasm of a public that knows and loves the Tour.

“These stages clearly reflect the race’s ambition: to continue growing women’s cycling and to inspire future generations.”

Grand Depart GB 2027 managing director Paul Bush stressed the positive social impact the Tour will have after the announcing of Joy, “the social impact programme that will embed community at the heart of the 2027 Grand Depart.

He told the Press Association: “Bringing the men’s and women’s races together is historic. It’s never happened before.

“We’ve called the social impact programme Joy on purpose because the race will actually bring some joy back into life.

“It’s an opportunity for communities to come out and support not only the riders, but take part in local activities.

“Whether it be through old people’s homes, whether it be through street parties, through schools. Christian Prudhomme has always said the race brings joy to communities.”

Former boxing world champion Ricky Hatton was found hanged at his home, a coroner’s court heard.

The 46-year-old was discovered “unresponsive” by his manager, Paul Speak, on the morning of Sunday, September 14th, at his house in Hyde, Greater Manchester, Stockport Coroner’s Court was told.

The details were given during a brief 10-minute hearing as the inquest into the death of the popular former boxer was opened and adjourned until March 20th next year, by Alison Mutch, senior coroner for Manchester South.

The court heard some details of the discovery of Hatton’s body given by police coroner’s officer Alison Catlow.

The court was told Hatton was last seen by his family on September 12th when he appeared “well”.

But the day after he did not attend an event as expected and on the morning of the 14th his manager arrived at his home to take him to Manchester Airport to catch a flight to Dubai.

Hatton was found unresponsive.

Ms Mutch said: “The provisional cause of death is given as hanging.”

There were no family members present for the hearing, but Ms Mutch said Mr Speak was attending on behalf of the family.

He sat before the bench, with around 20 reporters sitting behind him listening to proceedings.

The coroner told Mr Speak: “If I could just ask you to pass on my condolences to his family at this time.”

Ms Mutch continued: “This is a straightforward legal step that the law does require you to take to move on to the inquest next year.”

The address of Hatton was given and his occupation as a boxing trainer and company director.

She said Hatton was identified to police by Mr Speak.

Ms Mutch continued: “In relation to Mr Hatton’s death, I think it’s right, it was Mr Speak who found him?”

Ms Catlow replied: “That’s correct.”

Ms Mutch then asked for a “brief indication of the circumstances” of the death.

Ms Catlow said: “Mr Hatton lived alone. He was last seen on the evening of the 12th of September by his family when he appeared well.

“On Saturday, September 13th, he did not attend an event as expected.

“On the morning of September 14th, his manager arrived at his home address to take him to Manchester Airport for a flight to Dubai.

“Mr Hatton was found unresponsive.”

Hatton’s death left his family heartbroken and his army of fans stunned.

A proud Mancunian and avid Manchester City supporter, tributes poured in from across the world of boxing and the wider sporting community.

Last week, celebrities including Oasis frontman Liam Gallagher, former England and Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney and his wife Coleen, and boxers Tyson and Tommy Fury attended a memorial service at Manchester Cathedral.

Likeable, humble and a joker, Hatton, also known as “The Hitman”, was regarded as a “People’s Champion” and adored by thousands of fans.

His all-action fighting style and down-to-earth demeanour made him one of the most popular fighters on both sides of the Atlantic.

Hatton’s family insisted the former world champion was “in a good place”, a doting father and grandfather, who had plans for the future including his bags packed for a comeback fight in Dubai in December.

But Hatton had also been candid about his mental health struggles with drink and drugs and past suicide attempts after he retired from the ring for a second time following an ill-advised comeback in 2012.

An inquest opening into the death of Ricky Hatton will be held on Thursday morning, just over a month after the British boxing icon's sudden passing at the age of 46.

The former world champion was found dead at his home in Hyde, Greater Manchester, on Sunday, September 14, sending shockwaves across the world of sport. His funeral took place on Friday, with thousands of people lining the streets of Manchester and a host of famous faces attending the service at the city's cathedral.

One month on from the tragedy, little is known about what happened to Hatton, with his cause of death not being publicly disclosed by his family. However, some of the circumstances surrounding his death will be made public on Thursday, after police, who do not believe his death to be suspicious, referred the case to the coroner.

An inquest opening has been formally listed to take place at South Manchester Coroners' Court in Stockport at 9am on Thursday, (October 16), and will be held before the area's senior coroner Alison Mutch.

Inquests are opened by coroners when there is reasonable cause to suspect that a death has occurred due to anything other than natural causes. While there is no exact legal definition of a 'natural' cause of death, a typical description is "death due to a disease running its full course with no other intervening factors".

An inquest opening is a short, administrative hearing that will see the coroner officially open the inquest to investigate the death publicly. The coroner will confirm the identity of the person who has died, as well as the medical cause of death if it is known, while the brief circumstances of the death may also be heard.

The coroner will then decide if a full inquest needs to take place and adjourn the hearing to a later date for a review or for the final hearing. A timetable will then be set for the next steps in the investigation, including gathering witness statements and reports, as well as a date for any required future hearings.

Hatton was open about his struggles with his mental health, with his 13-year-old daughter Millie's heartbreaking eulogy at his funeral seeing her ask him: "Why didn't you reach out?".

Addressing the packed Manchester Cathedral at the service, she said: "I can’t help but think about how you will never walk me down the aisle, how you will never meet my children and your grandchildren, how you won’t be here to see me leave school or even see me grow into an adult.

"Why did you feel that way? Why didn’t you reach out about how you felt? I genuinely hope you don’t ever think you have let me down, because I would never think that. I love and miss you unconditionally.”

Addressing the packed Manchester Cathedral at the service, she said: "I can’t help but think about how you will never walk me down the aisle, how you will never meet my children and your grandchildren, how you won’t be here to see me leave school or even see me grow into an adult.

"Why did you feel that way? Why didn’t you reach out about how you felt? I genuinely hope you don’t ever think you have let me down, because I would never think that. I love and miss you unconditionally.”

Hatton's friend and long-time manager, Paul Speak, was the person who discovered the 46-year-old's body at his Manchester home, having come round to take him to the airport. While he initially thought the former boxer had overslept, it was only when he went upstairs that he discovered the tragic truth.

"The lights weren't on, which I thought was strange," he told Boxing News: "I thought he'd overslept, but it's not unusual. People do oversleep. So, I went inside – I have a key – shouting, 'Rick, Rick, wake up! I heard music coming from upstairs, so I went upstairs... I took a look at him... I had to take some time to process it.

"I was in a state of shock and confusion and loss and many more emotions," he added. "Then I called the police and the ambulance. But I firmly believe he didn't intend to do it. It's for the coroner to determine, but he had it all to live for.

"He'd arranged to take his daughters to see Oasis next week. He was planning to go to Thailand for the WBC convention and a holiday after his fight. He'd just booked a flight to Tenerife for Christmas. I want to get the truth out, otherwise people will just speculate."

Chris Eubank Jr issued a stark warning to Conor Benn's father, Nigel, following a fiery encounter last night. The British boxing stars were once again in close quarters on Thursday, two days after their tumultuous press conference in Manchester.

They are poised to clash in a middleweight bout on April 26 at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in London. Chaos erupted during their initial press conference on Tuesday when Eubank Jr hit his arch-rival with an egg during the face-offs, prompting security to step in and separate the entourages.

Footage later showed Benn Sr quickly approaching and grabbing Eubank Jr by the throat. Security was heightened for last night's press conference at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium due to fears of another altercation. A scheduled face-off on Wednesday had been scrapped over safety worries. Eubank Jr didn't hesitate to reference the scuffle with Nigel before delivering a menacing threat.

"I understand the frustration and the heat you were experiencing after I egged Conor," Eubank Jr remarked. "But you did put your hand around my neck, so I'm going to give you a pass. "But I'm just letting you know, if my hand ever touches you again you won't get it back." In an intense exchange during the press conference, Conor leapt to his father's defence with a fiery outburst, demanding: "Shut your f****** mouth. Oi silly b******s, shut your f****** mouth. Silly b*****s, threaten my dad again see what happens. "

His father Nigel then interjected with an apology, stating: "Listen Con, I can handle this. I'm old school. I'm really sorry I done that but you put your hand on my son." The exchange became even more personal when Conor brought up Eubank Jr's relationship with his own father, retorting: "Your dad doesn't like you, shut your mouth. You're just jealous.

"The altercation had escalated from when Eubank Jr landed an egg on his rival earlier in the week, an act he later admitted he felt no remorse about. Reflecting on the high-tension scenario, Eubank Jr held nothing back, claiming: "I'm sitting up here on a stage with two of the scummiest characters in boxing in my opinion; a drug cheat and a man who did everything in his power to help him get away with it. " He justified throwing the egg by saying: "Me throwing an egg at someone who absurdly claims that's why he failed two drug tests, I think that's light; he deserved the embarrassment.

If I had the opportunity to do it again I would. Unfortunately I came unarmed today, I've been thoroughly searched multiple times, I couldn't sneak anything in. This is going to be a real fight, this is going to be a bloodbath."

THE FUNERAL OF MAN UNITED AND ENGLAND ICON SIR BOBBY CHARLTON TO BE HELD IN MANCHESTER

MANCHESTER, England (AP) — The funeral of Manchester United and England great Bobby Charlton will be held in Manchester on Monday.

The soccer icon, who was widely-regarded as the greatest English player in history, died last month. He was 86.

The funeral service will be held at Manchester Cathedral and is expected to be attended by around 1,000 guests, including former teammates and leading sporting figures.

Former United manager Alex Ferguson will be among the representatives of the club that Charlton played for from 1956-73, making 758 appearances. Some current members of United's first team will also be in attendance.

A funeral cortege will begin at United's Old Trafford stadium, where fans are likely to gather to pay their respects.

Charlton survived a plane crash in 1958 that decimated a United team that seemed destined for greatness. He then went on to help his country win the 1966 World Cup and lifted the European Cup with United two years later.

He scored 249 goals for his club and won three league titles, the FA Cup and the European Cup.

Charlton held the record as England's leading scorer with 49 goals until being surpassed by Wayne Rooney in 2015.

Harry Kane set a new benchmark this year and currently has 61 goals for his country.
