HUWEL CLAIMS RWANDA'S MOUNTAIN GORILLA RALLY TROPHY 🏆
KIGALI: TANZANIA’S Ahmed Huwel overcame last section’s puncher to second overall in the Mountain Gorilla Rally of Rwanda this afternoon.
The third round of this year’s African Rally Championship (ARC), the Mountain Gorilla Rally was officially flagged off on July 10 before its climax today, July 12, 2026 in Rwanda’s capital, Kigali.
Tanzania could have its both entries at the top- three spot if Manvir Birdi, who retired in the last stages, maintained his lead til the podium finish.
Still,it was a sad ending for Birdi, another Tanzanian entry in this year’s continental level rally. Birdi who was navigated by Manmeet Birdi in their Skoda Fabia suffered a gearbox failure.
Before his last stages retirement, Birdi was leading the SS15 stage with Huwel following him closely in his Toyota GR Yaris.
Huwel, who was competing in the RC 2 Rally 2 category, clocked 2 hours, 20 minutes and 48.5 seconds, 7.30 minutes behind the winner, Karan Patel from Kenya.
Huwel represented the Mkwawa Rally while Manvir paraded the Asas Team banner.
Third overall was a Kenyan team of Aakif ViranI and Zahir Shah who spent 2 hours, 25 minutes and 52 seconds in their Skoda Fabia R5.
Navin Puligila from India finished fourth overall in Ford Fiesta after spending 2:27:85, finishing ahead of the fifth-placed Jasmeet Chana of Kenya who was timed at 2: 28:47.
Eleven cars managed to finish the tough engine war that raged on dusty roads of Rwanda.
Kenya’s Nikhil Sachania claimed the sixth position in Ford Fiesta while Christian Kanangire from Burundi took the seventh position ahead of the 8th –placed Oscar Ntambi from Uganda.

EBOLA CONCERNS FORCE FIBA TO MOVE U18 AFROBASKET FROM UGANDA 🇺🇬

Uganda’s aspirations of hosting the 2026 FIBA U18 AfroBasket Zone V Qualifiers have suffered a devastating blow after FIBA Africa stripped the country of its hosting rights, citing public health anxieties over the ongoing Ebola concern.
The regional youth tournament, originally slated to showcase Uganda’s newly minted Hoima City Arena, has been abruptly relocated to Egypt and will now run from June 10 to 15, 2026.
In a statement confirming the relocation, FIBA Africa emphasised that the safety and well-being of young athletes, technical officials and travelling delegations remained the governing body’s top priority.
The decision follows a surge in regional health concerns linked to the Ebola strain.
While the outbreak originated in the neighbouring Democratic Republic of Congo, recent confirmed cases and exposures within Uganda prompted local health authorities to implement strict surveillance and containment protocols.
Faced with an unpredictable health landscape, continental basketball officials opted to move the tournament to safer ground.
The Federation of Uganda Basketball Associations (FUBA) confirmed the development on Sunday, expressing profound disappointment while acknowledging the necessity of the decision.
The news is a bitter pill to swallow for local sports sub-sectors. The newly constructed Hoima City Arena was expected to make its international debut with this tournament, a milestone intended to market Hoima as a premier regional sporting destination.
The event was set to draw top youth talent from across East Africa, including Kenya, Rwanda, Tanzania, Burundi, and South Sudan.
Beyond the logistical and economic disappointment, the decision robs Uganda of a critical competitive edge.
In 2024, the Junior Silverbacks and Junior Gazelles capitalised on passionate home support to sweep both the boys’ and girls’ Zone V titles.
Now, Uganda’s reigning champions must defend their regional supremacy on foreign soil.
Despite the setback, FUBA officials maintained a resilient outlook, thanking fans, corporate partners, and stakeholders for their understanding.
The federation pledged its unyielding support to the youth squads as they pivot from hosts to international travelers.
With the qualifiers just days away, the focus shifts entirely to Cairo. FUBA is expected to release the final travel itineraries and logistical arrangements for the Ugandan contingent in the coming days as the teams prepare to fight for a coveted spot in the continental AfroBasket finals.

We are deeply saddened by the passing of Mitraros Elefterios (1948–2026), a true legend of African motorsport.
A former African Rally Champion in the 1600cc category (2005), Elefterios was more than a competitor, he was a role model, a mentor, and an inspiration to generations of drivers across the continent.
His passion, determination, and love for rallying left a lasting mark on the sport we cherish today.
Rest in peace, Champion. Your legacy will continue to guide and inspire us. 🏁

ARSENAL SET TO END VISIT RWANDA AGREEMENT FOLLOWING EIGHT-YEAR PARTNERSHIP
November 20 – One of the most controversial sleeve jersey sponsorship deals in the Premier League has come to an end with Arsenal confirming that their eight-year partnership with Visit Rwanda will finish at the end of the season.
The deal, which made Visit Rwanda the club’s first sleeve sponsor, never sat comfortably with a section of the fanbase. In April, a supporter group launched a campaign to scrap the agreement, even putting up a satirical “Visit Tottenham” billboard outside the Emirates before a match against Crystal Palace.
Political and social issues were also a driving force in terminating the partnership. In February, the government of the Democratic Republic of Congo urged Arsenal to drop the sponsorship after Rwandan-backed rebels seized the city of Goma, while Arsenal’s LGBTQ+ supporters’ group, Gay Gooners, welcomed the decision not to renew.
“As a group, we have been uncomfortable with the deal from the start and made significant representations to Arsenal through official channels since 2021,” the group said.
“In a survey of our 2,500+ worldwide membership in July, only 2 per cent of respondents thought the £10m-a-year Visit Rwanda sponsorship should be renewed. 86 per cent wanted the contract to end and a replacement found. Some members highlighted Rwanda’s record on LGBT+ human rights.”
Arsenal Chief Executive Richard Garlick thanked the Rwanda Development Board for the partnership and pointed to the progress made over the eight-year run.
“Our first-ever sleeve partnership with Visit Rwanda has been a significant journey,” he said. “Over many years, we’ve worked together to raise global awareness of Rwanda’s tourism and conservation efforts and built many new connections with our supporters across Africa.
“The commitment and support of Visit Rwanda throughout our partnership has played an important role in driving forward our ambitions… We thank the Rwanda Development Board for their partnership and what we’ve delivered together.”
