OLLIE WATKINS DROPS DAMNING VERDICT ABOUT ARNE SLOT'S LIVERPOOL AFTER ASTON VILLA'S 4-2 WIN

Ollie Watkins provided some eye-opening analysis on Arne Slot’s Liverpool after helping Aston Villa secure a 4-2 win at Villa Park on Friday night.

Villa put Liverpool to the sword in front of their home fans, sealing Champions League football in style with a deserved win over the reigning Premier League champions.

Unai Emery’s side went 1-0 up on the stroke of half-time through Morgan Rogers. Virgil van Dijk then levelled the scores early in the second half before Watkins restored Villa’s lead minutes later.

Watkins then doubled his tally in the 73rd minute before John McGinn made it 3-1 late on. Van Dijk made the scoreline slightly more respectable for Liverpool before full-time but this was another bitterly disappointing night for Slot and his beleaguered players.

Watkins on Facing Slot's Liverpool

Ollie Watkins scored against Liverpool

Sky Sports spoke to Watkins, who has now scored eight Premier League goals against Liverpool over the course of his career. Only Andy Cole (11) and Harry Kane (nine) have netted more times against the Reds.

During a frank live TV interview, Watkins described Liverpool as having a “disjointed” defence that don’t play offsides, making them a dream opponent for himself. The England international said:

“They play a high line and they don’t play offsides so they’re disjointed at the back and I feel like there’s a lot of space for me to run into."

He added: “I feel like I’m always going to get opportunities against them, that’s no disrespect to them. The two centre-backs are world-class at the end of the day, but I think I spot opportunities and spaces in between them.

“When it’s a high line like that I like to run in behind and create some danger for them.”

ASTON VILLA V MACCABI TEL AVIV POLICE ISSUE MAJOR UPDATE AFTER NIGHT OF PROTESTS

Missiles were allegedly thrown at West Midlands Police officers near Villa Park last night where Aston Villa played Maccabi Tel Aviv, a match to which away supporters were banned

Eleven people — including a child — were arrested last night following protests around Villa Park where Aston Villa played Maccabi Tel Aviv, police confirmed.

West Midlands Constabulary said in its latest update the suspects were mostly detained for racism offences near the ground, which hosted the Europa League clash.

Around 200 protesters — including members of the Palestine Solidarity Campaign, gathered near Villa Park's Trinity Road Stand — before the match to demand Israel is excluded from international football. Palestinian flags and banners calling for a boycott of Israel were placed on the ground beside Trinity Road amid pro-Palestinian chants.

But eleven people were arrested amid the tensions, including a 17-year-old boy who police say was issued with a dispersal order but refused to leave. A 21-year-old man tried to throw fireworks into the ground, West Midlands Constabulary added. It was also reported missiles were thrown at officers.

Hundreds of extra officers were on duty in Birmingham on Thursday night. Chief Supt Tom Joyce, Birmingham Police Commander, said: "Our officers are being supported by officers from up and down the country as part of mutual aid. This has definitely been one of the most contentious and controversial matches we've hosted for some time, but our priority, really clearly, is public safety."

Five flatbed vehicles were driven past the ground prior to kick-off carrying electronic billboards showing messages opposing antisemitism.

One of the messages, beside a Star of David, read "Ban hatred not fans" while another carried a quote from Thierry Henry saying football is not about goals but bringing people together.

But while violence did not happen, confrontations occurred and police made the 11 arrests. These were;

  • A 63-year-old man arrested for a racially aggravated public order offence after he was heard shouting racist abuse during a road rage incident near Villa Park
  • A 21-year-old man arrested after refusing to remove a face covering while a Section 60 order was in place
  • A 17-year-old who was issued with a dispersal order but refused to leave
  • A 34-year-old arrested on suspicion of a racially aggravated public order offence after shouting abuse towards pro-Israel demonstrators
  • A 29-year-old man arrested on suspicion of a racially aggravated public order offence after shouting abuse towards pro-Israel demonstrators. He was also arrested for possession of class B drugs
  • A 67-year-old man arrested on suspicion of a racially aggravated public order offence after shouting racist abuse at a police officer
  • A 32-year-old man arrested on suspicion of a racially aggravated public order offence after shouting racist abuse towards a pro-Palestine group
  • A man aged 21 arrested after trying to throw fireworks into the ground
  • A man arrested on suspicion of possession with intent to supply drugs.
West Midlands Police stress it understands the right to protests but had to ensure members of the public in and around Villa Park were safe. Unai Emery's side, currently bottom half of the Premier League, laboured to a 2-0 win against Maccabi Tel Aviv.

MARCUS RASHFORD HAS EMBARRASSED MAN UNITED AR ASTON VILLA AFTER DOING TWO THINGS

Marcus Rashford left Manchester United on a loan basis when he joined Aston Villa in the January transfer window

Marcus Rashford made another impact in an Aston Villa shirt on Friday night as he delivered an assist for Marco Asensio's opening goal in the eventually comfortable 2-0 win over Cardiff City in the last 16 of the FA Cup at Villa Park.

Rashford has caught the eye during the opening weeks of his Villa spell; while he awaits his first goal in Villa colours, he was electric when inspiring their comeback in the recent victory over Chelsea, on an evening when he set up both goals from fellow January arrival Asensio in the second half.

While three assists in six appearances so far is a fair return for a player who is still getting back up to speed having encountered a difficult few months at Manchester United prior to his move to Villa, the bare numbers produced by Rashford have been defining and point to a prosperous period in the weeks to come.

For many, the manner of Rashford's departure from Old Trafford will be regrettable; in 2022/23, Rashford scored 30 goals and produced nine assists in all competitions for the Red Devils and received a lucrative and lengthy contract on the back of that return, but Rashford has been frozen out by new manager Ruben Amorim and would appear to have no future.

Rashford's disillusionment at United could prove to be Villa's gain; two separate statistics have emerged since Rashford's Villa debut against Tottenham Hotspur in the FA Cup on the 9th of February - one being that no other Premier League has created more goalscoring opportunities than his 13 in that period.

Specifically in the cup tie with Cardiff, Rashford created six chances over the course of the evening - that number in a single match equalled the highest number of chances he produced at any point in his 426 appearances for United (that game was also in the FA Cup against Wigan a year ago).

Unai Emery is clearly helping Rashford to rediscover his very best attacking and creative form in a Villa shirt and is, on a weekly basis, rather making a mockery of United's and Amorim's decision to ease him out of the first-team environment and, ultimately, out of the club - not that Villa will be complaining having taken advantage of the situation.

VILLA PARK NOISE 'HURTING MY EARS' IN WIN OVER BAYERN - EMI MARTINEZ

Aston Villa keeper Emiliano Martinez celebrates after a win against Bayern Munich in the Champions League. Getty Images

BIRMINGHAM, England -- Aston Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martรญnez said the crowd was the loudest he'd ever heard it at Villa Park after helping his team beat Bayern Munich 1-0 in the Champions League on Wednesday evening.

Jhon Duran's 79th minute long-range strike was enough to earn Villa a memorable victory over Vincent Kompany's Bayern Munich in what was the host's first top-level European match at Villa Park in 41 years.

Bayern had the bulk of possession and had chances to level the match late on, but Martinez saved brilliantly to palm away a close-range Harry Kane header. And postmatch, the Argentine World Cup-winner paid tribute to the fans and dedicated the win to them.

"This is the loudest Villa Park that I've heard since I joined the club, that's for sure," Martinez said. "It was hurting my ears at some point. I love playing here. I love the fans. This is a win for them."

"There's no ceiling for me, I want to keep improving," the Argentina national team goalkeeper added.

"I'm obsessed with continuing to progress, becoming the best, winning everything with Aston Villa, and with the Argentina national team as well, and I try to show it every week. The goals I've conceded in the Premier League are many and it has affected me. I'm a fanatic about finishing matches with a clean sheet and I work hard on that"

Martinez's brilliant saves late on preserved the three points, they had Duran's incredible strike to thank for a famous victory.

The goal came as Pau Torres' long ball split the Bayern defence and Duran hit a first-time shot from 30 yards that looped over goalkeeper Manuer Neuer's head. Neuer was frequently positioned outside of his penalty area when Bayern were attacking, and Unai Emery revealed postmatch that Villa had identified that as an area of opportunity.

"When Duran received the ball, he was shooting quick," Emery said. "In the analysis we were speaking a lot about how the usual positioning of Neuer, [and how it is] always high. I spoke with my assistant coaches, about how to shoot [first time], and he had this in his mind."

Duran has had an incredible knack of scoring late winners for Villa this season. He has four in the Premier League this term, three of them securing Villa key victories. Emery started Ollie Watkins up front against Bayern, and he played 70 minutes before being replaced by the match-winner.

The Villa manager said having two in-form strikers is a welcome headache, with Watkins excelling for Villa as well.

"For my management, it's a challenge, as I have to get the best [out of the players]," Emery said. "It's a good problem for the team, as I have one striker -- Watkins, he plays at a top level, and a young player who's growing his talent and wants to be in the staring 11. I am very happy with this situation.

"It was important that Watkins did the work in 70 minutes and Duran, different ways, fresh player, scored the goal to win the match. They [have] played together, and will play together."

Villa have won both Champions League games so far, having also defeated Young Boys 3-0 and Emery said his team are targeting one of the top eight spots in the competition's pool stage, which would give Villa direct qualification to the knockout round without needing a playoff.

"I am very proud of everything around Aston Villa," Emery said afterward.

For the visitors, they had their fair share of chances but were left frustrated by Martinez and some brilliant scrambling defending from Villa. Despite the defeat, Kompany said it would have little long-term impact on his team's prospects in the Champions League.

It was a night in which there was plenty of nostalgia at Villa Park given these two met in the 1982 European Cup final, a match Villa won 1-0. But Kompany said such memories have no bearing on Wednesday's match.

"When it comes to winning and losing, you don't need the context of so many years," he said. "We lost the game, the game has its own stories. We had big chances and they had a moment, and in that moment, they scored a goal. I understand the occasion for the opponent, but it doesn't decide the Champions League today."

And having seen his team score only one goal in their last two matches -- in their 1-1 draw with Bayer Leverkusen -- Kompany played down any concerns over their recent wastefulness in front of goal.

"Over two games against teams I rate highly, we conceded few chances," Kompany said. "What we normally do so well is score goals, for one reason or another, it's been [against the] bar or post, but with the team we have, I don't see this as a trend. It's just what's happened this week.

"If we focus on our own work, we'll win a lot of games still."
