GIANLUIGI DONNARUMMA SET TO JOIN MANCHESTER CITY AS DEAL AGREED

Gianluigi Donnarumma is reportedly on the verge of joining Manchester City from Paris Saint-Germain in a deal worth €27 million before the summer transfer window closes.

According to an update by reputed Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano, Gianluigi Donnarumma has been the subject of interest from Manchester City. The Citizens have been eager to bolster their first-team squad by landing another goalkeeper in the summer transfer window despite re-signing James Trafford. So, the 26-year-old Paris Saint-Germain shot-stopper has been a target.

The former AC Milan wonderkid is on the cusp of joining Manchester City, as they have struck an agreement with PSG. Meanwhile, Alfredo Pedulla has shared further details on Football Italia, revealing that the Premier League club will fork out €27 million to sign Donnarumma, who will pocket an annual salary of over €15 million.

Gianluigi Donnarumma and his PSG spell

Gianluigi Donnarumma reached a crossroads in his career despite his excellent performances for Paris Saint-Germain. The 26-year-old has been exceptional between the sticks for Les Parisiens since arriving from AC Milan in a Bosman move in July 2021. He has made over 150 appearances for PSG while keeping 52 clean sheets and conceding 152 goals.

However, the Italian international entered the final 12 months of his contract in July, and talks with PSG over a new contract did not progress much. So, the Ligue 1 champions have signed Lucas Chevalier from LOSC Lille earlier this summer to be the new first-choice goalkeeper. Donnarumma has thus been searching for his next destination, with Manchester City negotiating a deal with PSG for several weeks.

Premier League adventure beckons

Manchester City’s interest in Gianluigi Donnarumma has been baffling. The Citizens have re-signed James Trafford from Burnley this summer. While the English international has blown hot and cold, he is a world-class prospect who can be a long-term solution between the sticks for Manchester City.

So while Ederson Moraes is on the cusp of joining Fenerbahce, it is unclear why the Premier League table-toppers want another shot-stopper. Nevertheless, the PSG goalkeeper has been a target for Manchester City, and the Premier League giants have struck an agreement to secure his services. City will fork out €27 million to sign the former AC Milan shot-stopper.

Personal terms were never an issue, and the 26-year-old Italian international will sign a long-term contract with over €15 million-a-year wages. Meanwhile, Fabrizio Romano has revealed in a separate update that Donnarumma will undergo his medical tests in Italy and formally arrive at Manchester City after the international break.

Champions League winners PSG take on Tottenham Hotspur for the Super Cup in Italy on Wednesday night but have chosen to not include their first-choice goalkeeper of four years. Donnarumma's contract in the French capital expires at the end of the coming season, meaning he would become a free agent and able to depart without a transfer fee.

Tension has grown over the unresolved situation and now Enrique has confirmed it is he who has taken action.

"Gigio is one of the best goalkeepers in the world and an even better person. But that's the life of a top-level footballer, as it is for coaches," the PSG boss told Sky Sports Italia.

"These are difficult decisions, but I take responsibility for the choice I made. If they were easy, anyone would make them. They have to do with the profile of the goalkeeper my team needs."

Stepping in for the Italian international is PSG's new signing Lucas Chevalier, who was bought from LOSC Lille for a reported €40m (£34.5m) last week.

According to RMC Sport, Donnarumma is City's top pick to replace Ederson should the Brazilian opt to leave the Etihad Stadium after eight years. Turkish media have reported interest from Galatasaray.

United have also been linked by various sources but The Daily Mail believe a move for the 26-year-old is unlikely. As the Manchester Evening News understands, Ruben Amorim and Co. are believed to be keen on signing a new goalkeeper but there is no fixed budget for doing so.

Also speaking on the topic of Donnarumma was PSG captain Marquinhos. The defender said: "We know how football is, which is a bit difficult, especially in the transfer market.

"He was a great player for us, he deserves all the best in his life. He's a great person and a great man, he respected this club a lot, but football is like that and sometimes we can't do too much.

"We don't know what happened in the discussion. I've been here for 12 or 13 years and I've experienced many moments like this: friends who arrive and friends who leave."

Bayern Munich star Jamal Musiala says there's no one to blame for the left leg fracture he sustained in a tackle from Paris Saint-Germain goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma at the Club World Cup.

The Germany star posted an update on Instagram on Wednesday, when he thanked people for their support after he fractured his fibula (bone in the lower leg) during Bayern's loss to PSG in the quarterfinals on Saturday.

It's nice to see how the football world comes together in a time like this and I really appreciate it, Musiala said.

Musiala was flown back to Munich on Sunday for surgery on the injury that Bayern said was associated with an ankle dislocation.

Bayern goalkeeper Manuel Neuer had criticized Donnarumma for his action, suggesting his Italian counterpart didn't necessarily have to go in like that and that he had knowingly risked causing an injury.

Bayern board member for sport Max Eberl also criticized Donnarumma, saying there was a big danger something can happen with the goalkeeper jumping in to secure the ball and that the action was not without risk.

Donnarumma, who was visibly upset after seeing Musiala's injury, posted a message tagged to Musiala: All my prayers and well wishes are with you.

Thank you for your wishes and don't worry! That's part of football, the German player responded.

In his own post, Musiala appeared to address Neuer and Eberl's criticisms.

The surgery went really well, I'm in good care, and I wanted to say there's no one to blame for this, the 22-year-old forward said. I think situations like this happen and now I'm just going to use the next period of time just to build up my strength and positivity again. I'm looking forward to seeing you guys again.

Musiala spent much of last season injured. He missed around 2 months with a muscle tear in his left hamstring and had only made his comeback at the Club World Cup. He previously missed around a month in October with a hip injury.

MUNICH (AP) - Bayern Munich says attacking midfielder Jamal Musiala faces a "lengthy" recovery from a leg fracture after his collision with Paris Saint-Germain goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma at the Club World Cup.

Bayern said Sunday that Musiala had flown back from Florida to Munich that morning for surgery on the injury he picked up in Saturday's loss to PSG in the quarterfinals.

Bayern said doctors found Musiala "sustained a fracture of the fibula (bone in the lower leg) associated with an ankle dislocation."

"This serious injury and the lengthy lay-off are a real shock for Jamal and us all," Bayern board member for sport Max Eberl said in a statement.

"Jamal has just come back from an injury and will now be out for another long period. He´ll get everything he needs from us. We´ll support him intensively, be by his side and already look forward to when he´s back on the pitch."

Bayern Munich goalkeeper Manuel Neuer pointed the finger at Gianluigi Donnarumma after Jamal Musiala sustained a horror injury at the Club World Cup. Musiala was stretchered off during Bayern’s 2-0 defeat by Paris Saint-Germain in the quarter finals in Atlanta after colliding with Donnarumma.

The Bayern star was taken to hospital with a serious injury picked up late in the first half at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium. Chasing an overhit pass from Michael Olise, he tried to get around William Pacho, only for Donnarumma to dive onto the ball, accidentally trapping Musiala’s leg between his body and the turf.

The seriousness of the situation was immediately evident, with the Germany international in agony and all the players distraught. Donnarumma dropped to his knees holding his face and was in tears when he realised the extent of the injury, which reports suggest is a fractured tibia and fibula, meaning potentially five months out.

Bayern veteran Neuer was still emotional after the match and criticised his opposite number in an interview with Sky Sports Germany. “It was a situation where you don't have to go in like that,” he said. “That's risk-taking. He was prepared to accept the risk of injuring his opponent.”

Neuer then alleged that Donnarumma only checked in on Musiala after being prompted. He said: “I went to him and said, ‘Don't you want to go and see our player?’ It's a matter of respect, of going there and wishing the guy all the best. He then did it. Fair play is always a part of it. I would have reacted differently.”

Donnarumma took to Instagram after the game, writing: “All my prayers and well wishes are with you @jamalmusiala10.” PSG won the game thanks to goals from Ousmane Dembele and Desire Doue, but their post-match thoughts were all with Musiala.

"It's important we talk about Musiala," said PSG right-back Achraf Hakimi. "I want to give my support to him. We hope to see him back on the pitch soon." Dembele added: "Shout out to Jamal Musiala. [The injury] is something you don't want to see on the field."

Bayern Munich manager Vincent Kompany told DAZN: "He has had to go to hospital. It didn't look good. The overwhelming feeling is hopefully it's not as bad as it looks and he gets through this one."

Kompany later added: "I've rarely been so angry at half-time, not against my players. There are many things in life that are much more important than this, but in the end, for these guys, it's their life. He came back from a setback, and then it happens in the way it happens and you feel powerless.

"You try and get strength out of it because you want to do it for Jamal. The thing that gets my blood still boiling at the moment, it's not the result. I understand this is football, but it's the fact that it happened to someone that, for one, enjoys the game so much, but also is very important for us."

The latest Arsenal news as the Gunners host PSG in the first leg of their Champions League semi-final on Tuesday night at the Emirates Stadium.

Paris Saint-Germain have revealed their full 22-man squad for the Champions League semi-final first leg against Arsenal.

The Gunners host the French Champions at the Emirates Stadium tonight (Tuesday, 8pm kick-off) as both teams look to take an advantage into the second leg of the tie. A final in Munich, Germany against either Barcelona or Inter await the winners.

For Arsenal, they will be hoping for a repeat of the quarter-final against Real Madrid. Mikel Arteta ’s men took a 3-0 lead into the second leg, with the side completing the job at the Bernabeu with a 5-1 aggregate score.

Ahead of the game, PSG have been handed a clean bill of health in terms of injuries. There are no notable absentees for the squad selected by manager Luis Enrique.

Included in the 22-man list are three goalkeepers, seven defenders, six midfielders and five forwards.

ARSENAL SHOW IMPRESSIVE STRENGTH, DEPTH IN BEATING PSG

LONDON -- Arsenal maintained their unbeaten start to the season by coasting to a 2-0 Champions League victory against Paris Saint-Germain, on a night to forget for PSG goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma at the Emirates. The win, Arsenal's first in the revamped competition following their 0-0 draw away to Atalanta on matchday one of the league phase, lifts Mikel Arteta's team into seventh position in the league stage -- one of the top eight slots that guarantee a place in the round of 16 later in the season.

Arsenal were set on their way to victory when Kai Havertz headed the opening goal from Leandro Trossard's 20th-minute cross, but the goal was largely down to a mistake by Donnarumma, who misjudged Trossard's delivery and collided with Havertz as the Germany international headed into an empty net.

The former Chelsea forward has now scored five goals in nine appearances in all competitions for the Gunners this season and he was impressive again against PSG. His movement and industry in the final third, as well as being in the right place to score Arsenal's first, highlights why Arteta resisted the temptation to sign a new centre-forward in the summer and kept faith with a player who has developed a habit for scoring on the big occasion.

PSG, who beat Girona in their Champions League opener, enjoyed some periods of pressure in the second half, but by that stage, they were down 2-0 and as good as out of the game. After Havertz opened the scoring, Bukayo Saka's 35th-minute free kick easily beat Donnarumma at his near post when four players failed to connect with the ball as it flew toward the goal.

With the eight-game league phase still at an early stage, it is difficult to gauge how important this result is for either side in their attempt to reach the latter rounds, but for Arsenal at least, they have their first win in the competition this season. PSG should be fine after Tuesday's setback, though they can't afford many more poor performances if they're to secure a top-eight finish. -- Ogden

Donnarumma makes more critical errors on the big stage

It's wasn't the first time -- and won't be the last either, unfortunately -- but Donnarumma had another bad European night on Tuesday at the Emirates. The Italy international goalkeeper was at fault on both Arsenal goals, first by missing completely the cross by Trossard that allowed Havertz to score. Then by letting Saka's free kick go straight in the back of his net.

Despite the occasional sharp save, like the reflex stop to deny Gabriel Martinelli from close at the start of the second half, it's not good enough again from the Euro 21 winner. He has been a luxury in Ligue 1 between the posts, but he has faltered in key Champions League moments, such as last season's semifinal against Dortmund, to name another example.

If Paris want to win the Champions League one day, they will need a top keeper. They thought they had found him when they recruited the former Milan man back in 2021, yet at 25, he still hasn't really improved in his four seasons in the French capital. -- Laurens

Odegaard's absence is actually showing Arsenal's strength, not their weakness

Remember when Arsenal captain Martin Odegaard returned from the September international break with an ankle ligament injury sustained while playing for Norway, and the big question was about how the Gunners would cope without him?

The former Real Madrid midfielder is a top player, no doubt about that, but it is a testament to the growing strength and depth of Arteta's squad that they haven't missed the 25-year-old in the lineup. This was the sixth game Arsenal have played without Odegaard since he was sidelined by injury, and they haven't lost any of them.

There have been some tough fixtures in that run, too: Spurs and Manchester City away saw Arsenal bank four points with a win and draw, while PSG were brushed aside at the Emirates after Europa League winners Atalanta were held to a 0-0 draw on matchday one last month.

Without Odegaard in the centre of his team, Arteta has turned to Thomas Partey to fill the void alongside Declan Rice. Partey is a totally different player to Odegaard, but he has not tried to be what he isn't. Instead, the former Atletico Madrid man has just played to his strengths, forming a solid midfield axis with Rice and unselfishly doing what his team needed. Against PSG, Rice and Partey gave Arsenal the platform on which they built their 2-0 half-time lead.

Odegaard's importance to Arsenal is such that he will be straight back in the team when fit, but by showing they can cope without him, the Gunners have outlined their strength as a squad. -- Ogden

Decision to drop Dembélé really backfires for PSG

The big talking point going into the game from the PSG perspective was the decision by Luis Enrique to drop Ousmane Dembélé, his best player this season, after a heated post-match meeting at the weekend. Coming off the back of a 3-1 win over Rennes, the decision properly backfired, not that Luis Enrique cares -- for him it's all about discipline, and Dembélé didn't respect the rules. One wonders if he would have taken the same decision had PSG played a Champions League semifinal at the Emirates rather than the second of eight group games.

Anyway, the absence of the French international was badly felt. He is their main source of creativity and inspiration. And without him, it was definitely not the same. Désiré Doué was chosen to replace him and while the France U21 international attacking is a promising talent, he was totally overwhelmed by the occasion at the Emirates, with the visitors generating just 0.31 xG (expected goals) on 10 shots over the 90 minutes. -- Laurens

Calafiori impresses again for Arsenal

Riccardo Calafiori has made only four starts in his Arsenal career, but it's fair to say he has gone through more than most players in such a short span of time.

His first time in the XI against Manchester City saw him make an error leading to a goal and a brilliant strike of his own. Then came a roller coaster of a game against Leicester City, in which he should have been sent off for two yellow cards, and he followed that with maybe his best performance of the lot Tuesday.

Over the 90 minutes, the Italy international really showed why Arsenal were so keen to spend €50m to sign him this summer. The former Bologna defender was everywhere against PSG. First, he was impeccable defensively at left-back, against Doué, and then at right-back (despite being left-footed) against Bradley Barcola. He also showed poise and intensity stepping into midfield when Arsenal had the ball, adding another option for the ball carrier, helping to beat the PSG press.

Calafiori is one of the next generation of versatile, technically gifted central defenders who can slot in wherever needed. Seeing him always in the right position to receive the ball, his composure in possession, his physicality and defensive qualities, there is clearly not much he cannot do. At 22, the future looks outstanding for him and for Arsenal. -- Laurens

PSG KEEPER DONNARUMMA HETS TWO-MATCH BAN FOR CASIMIR KICK

Paris St Germain keeper Gianluigi Donnarumma has been suspended for two matches over a high challenge that saw him sent off during Sunday's 2-0 win at Le Havre, the French league's governing body said on Wednesday.

The Italy international was sent off in the 10th minute after his mistimed attempt at a high-footed clearance caught Josue Casimir in the head.

Donnarumma will miss the defending champions' Ligue 1 games against Nantes and Lille over the next two weekends but remains eligible for Wednesday's Champions League game at Dortmund.

PARIS (AP) — Paris Saint-Germain had no problem beating Le Havre 2-0 to extend its lead at the top of the French league standings on Sunday despite playing for more than 80 minutes with 10 men after goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma was sent off for a reckless tackle.

Goals from Kylian Mbappe and Vitinha ensured a seventh consecutive league win for Luis Enrique's team. PSG has a four-point cushion at the top after second-place Nice was handed its first loss this season on Saturday, a 1-0 defeat at Nantes.

Le Havre got off to a strong start with several good moves but lacked accuracy to inflict any damage. The hosts produced 22 shots, but only seven of them were on target.

Donnarumma was sent off following a reckless foul outside his box. The Italy goalkeeper came out of the area as he tried to clear a long ball with a very high tackle, but instead made contact with Le Havre forward Josue Casimir's face.

Referee Bastien Dechepy showed him a red card and Bradley Barcola made way for substitute goalie Arnau Tenas, who was happy to keep a clean sheet on his debut.

“It’s wonderful," he said. "I’d like to thank everyone for this opportunity, it’s an incredible day today. The team was strong for every minute played, and I was able to stop the opposition’s shots.”
