FIFA GIVES CLUBS AN EXTRA WEEK BEFORE RELEASING AFCON STARS

Liverpool could be without Egyptian forward Mohamed for several English Premier League matches during the Africa Cup of Nations tournament (PETER POWELL)

Star players such as Mohamed Salah, Bryan Mbeumo and Achraf Hakimi will be able to play for their clubs for an extra week until December 15 before joining their national teams at the Africa Cup of Nations, FIFA said on Wednesday.

Top European clubs such as Salah's Liverpool, Mbeumo's Manchester United and Hakimi's Paris Saint-Germain face losing key players for up to five weeks for the 24-nation tournament in Morocco from December 21 to January 18.

But they had feared it could be even longer until FIFA amended its rules to soften the blow for clubs by delaying the release date by a week.

The decision came after "fruitful consultations led by FIFA with key stakeholders and thanks to the spirit of solidarity demonstrated by CAF to reduce the impact on various parties," FIFA said in a statement, referring to the tournament organisers, the Confederation of African Football.

"It was also decided to encourage member associations participating in the 2025 AFCON and clubs releasing players... to engage in good faith bilateral discussions in order to find appropriate individual solutions," FIFA added.

Before FIFA's ruling, players had been required to show up for international duty by December 8, meaning that English Premier League clubs could have been without vital players for up to seven or even eight league matches during a particularly busy part of the season.

The competition falls at an awkward moment for the likes of high-flying Sunderland and rock-bottom Wolverhampton Wanderers who could be without up to seven and five players respectively.

Liverpool will be without Egypt forward Salah, Manchester City will have to do without his international team-mate Omar Marmoush and Algeria's left-back Rayan Ait-Nouri, while United will lose Cameroon's Mbeumo, Ivory Coast winger Amad Diallo and Morocco full-back Noussair Mazraoui.

On the other hand, league leaders Arsenal, Chelsea and Leeds will be unaffected.

French and European champions PSG will lose Hakimi, the reigning African player of the year, but other European giants such as Real Madrid, Barcelona, AC Milan and Juventus will not see any players involved.

Bayern Munich's Senegal forward Nicolas Jackson, on loan from Chelsea, will be at the tournament but will not miss many Bundesliga games as the league will be on its winter break from December 22 to January 8.

Morocco, Egypt, Algeria and Senegal are amongst the tournament favourites.

Paris Saint-Germain's Achraf Hakimi was crowned African Footballer of the Year at the 2025 CAF Awards in Rabat on Wednesday, becoming the first defender in 52 years to earn the honour as he finished ahead of Mohamed Salah and Victor Osimhen in the final voteThe Moroccan full-back received the accolade after an outstanding 2025 season with PSG, during which he lifted the Champions League, Ligue 1, Coupe de France and UEFA Super Cup. Hakimi is the first Moroccan player to take the award since Mustapha Hadji in 1998 and the first defender to do so since Zaire's Bwanga Tshimen in 1973.

"It is really a proud moment for me to win this prestigious award. This trophy is not just for me, but all the strong men and women who have dreams of being a footballer in African," Hakimi said.

"And for those that always believed in me since I was a child, that I would be a professional footballer one day. I would like to thank them all."

Morocco also dominated several other categories, with Saudi-based striker Ghizlane Chebbak named Women's Footballer of the Year and Al-Hilal keeper Yassine Bounou taking the Men's Goalkeeper of the Year award.

Nigeria's Chiamaka Nnadozie secured the Women's Goalkeeper of the Year prize for a third consecutive time, following her recent transfer to Brighton & Hove Albion in the Women's Super League.

WHY FIVE PSG SUPERSTARS WILL MISS BALLON D'OR CEREMONY BUT OUSMANE DEMBÉLÉ COULD STILL ATTEND

Five PSG stars who have been nominated for the 2025 Ballon d’Or are set to miss the ceremony tomorrow, but the favourite, Ousmane Dembele, could still attend the event.

The Ballon d’Or ceremony is set to take place tomorrow evening at the Theatre du Chatelet in Paris.

With such a prestigious event taking place, only one game in Europe’s top five leagues was originally scheduled to take place tomorrow – Napoli vs Pisa.

However, PSG’s clash with Marseille has been pushed back to Monday night, meaning that it now clashes with the Ballon d’Or ceremony.

The game was originally supposed to take place on Sunday, but has been postponed due to weather conditions in the south of France.

PSG boss Luis Enrique had already named his squad to take on Marseille and it featured five players who have been nominated for the 2025 Ballon d’Or.

Providing that Enrique doesn’t change his squad for Monday, here are the five PSG players who are set to miss the Ballon d’Or ceremony, in order to play against Marseille.

Achraf Hakimi

The Moroccan full-back was named in Enrique’s squad to face Marseille and will be forced to miss the Ballon d’Or ceremony this year.

During 2025-26, he’s featured in all four of PSG’s league matches and will be needed on Monday night when they face their bitter rivals.

Given the campaign that he had last season, the right-back is expected to pick up plenty of votes and could potentially place in the top 10.

Nuno Mendes

Like Hakimi, Mendes would’ve originally planned to attend the Ballon d’Or event in Paris on Monday. However, his services will be needed in Marseille instead.

It’s the first time that the Portuguese star has ever been nominated for the Ballon d’Or, but he won’t get the chance to attend the event this year.

Khvicha Kvaratskhelia

Kvaratskhelia had one hell of a season in 2024-25 and his Ballon d’Or nomination came as no surprise.

He technically won two league titles, having played a role in Napoli winning Serie A and PSG winning Ligue 1.

After playing a starring role in PSG’s Champions League triumph last season, Kvaratskhelia is expected to place in the top 10 this year.

Fabian Ruiz

Ruiz has established himself as a key performer for both PSG and Spain in recent years and his Balllon d’Or nomination came as no surprise.

His agent, Rodolfo Odrie, even thinks that the Spaniard would be a worthy winner of the award this year.

“It would be justified,” Odrie told L’Equipe when commenting on Ruiz and his chances of winning the Ballon d’Or.

“He’s won almost every competition he’s played in over the last two years. With PSG, he’s won everything. He’s an indisputable starter for club and country, with a very high level of performance and irreproachable individual behavior.

“I know that with his personality, the fact that he doesn’t like to put himself forward, he doesn’t always get the consideration he should, but it would be unfair not to think of him, given everything he’s achieved.”

Vitinha

Of all of the PSG players who are set to miss the ceremony on Monday, Vitinha is expected to place the highest.

He was integral to PSG’s success in Europe last season and his triumph with Portugal in the Nations League added another feather to his cap.

The latest Arsenal news as the Gunners host PSG in the first leg of their Champions League semi-final on Tuesday night at the Emirates Stadium.

Paris Saint-Germain have revealed their full 22-man squad for the Champions League semi-final first leg against Arsenal.

The Gunners host the French Champions at the Emirates Stadium tonight (Tuesday, 8pm kick-off) as both teams look to take an advantage into the second leg of the tie. A final in Munich, Germany against either Barcelona or Inter await the winners.

For Arsenal, they will be hoping for a repeat of the quarter-final against Real Madrid. Mikel Arteta ’s men took a 3-0 lead into the second leg, with the side completing the job at the Bernabeu with a 5-1 aggregate score.

Ahead of the game, PSG have been handed a clean bill of health in terms of injuries. There are no notable absentees for the squad selected by manager Luis Enrique.

Included in the 22-man list are three goalkeepers, seven defenders, six midfielders and five forwards.

Achraf Hakimi and Mohamed Salah signed off from domestic duties ahead of the Africa Cup of Nations in some style this week, but Nigeria lynchpin Wilfred Ndidi was forced to withdraw from the Super Eagles squad through injury.

Premier League fans who stayed in to watch the action across gameweek 20 were treated to a series of festive thrillers, with an average of 3.5 goals per game, and no shortage of outstanding individual displays.

Few came close to rivalling Salah, however, who signed off for AFCON duties with a double on New Year's Day, as Liverpool saw off Newcastle United 4-2 to consolidate their grip on top spot.

Despite his mesmerising performance, it was a testing first half for the Egyptian King, who opted to change his boots at the break having seen an early penalty - and follow-up -- saved by the outstanding Martin Dúbravka.

For long spells, it appeared as though the Slovakia stopper would be up to anything Salah hurled at him, but the 31-year-old wasn't about to let his head drop after being denied from the spot. He promptly opened the scoring in the 49th minute when he finished from close range after being played in - unselfishly - by Darwin Núñez.

Salah's interplay with Diogo Jota forged the opportunity for Curtis Jones, magnificent in and out of possession, to add another for the Reds, before Cody Gakpo met a delicious cross from the Egyptian to add a third.
