CRISTIANO RONALDO FACES $1B CLASS-ACTION LAWSUIT AFTER PROMOTING FOR BINANCE NFTS

AP Photo

NEW YORK (AP) — Portuguese soccer star Cristiano Ronaldo has been hit with class-action lawsuit seeking at least $1 billion in damages for his role in promoting cryptocurrency-related “non-fungible tokens,” or NFTs, issued by the beleaguered cryptocurrency exchange Binance.

The lawsuit filed in federal court in the Southern District of Florida Monday alleges that Ronaldo's promotion of Binance was “deceptive and unlawful.” Binance's partnership with high-profile figures like Ronaldo, the plaintiffs claim, led them into costly and unsafe investments.

“Evidence now reveals that Binance’s fraud was only able to reach such heights through the offer and sale of unregistered securities, with the willing help and assistance of some of the wealthiest, powerful and recognized organizations and celebrities across the globe—just like Defendant Ronaldo,” the suit reads.

Representatives for Ronaldo declined to comment Thursday. Binance, the world's largest cryptocurrency exchange, did not immediately return requests for statement from The Associated Press.

According to police, a preliminary investigation of a “major disturbance” at a home on Wednesday determined that Miller, 34, and the victim got into a verbal argument and the suspect assaulted the victim, who is pregnant. They said Miller left the scene before they arrived.

The victim was treated for minor injuries and an arrest warrant was issued for Miller.

COLOMBIAN JUDGE ORDERS PRISON FOR 2 SUSPECTS IN THE KIDNAPPING OF PARENTS OF LUIS DIAZ

AP Photo

BOGOTA, Colombia (AP) — Two suspects in the kidnapping of the parents of Liverpool soccer player Luis Díaz were ordered sent to prison by a judge, Colombia’s Prosecutor’s Office said Wednesday, accusing one of the men of being the link to a person close to the family who provided information about the victims.

Andrés Alcires Bolívar and Marlon Rafael Brito are also accused of maintaining contacts with members of the National Liberation Army, or ELN, in the planning and execution of the Oct. 28 abductions in Barrancas, a town in La Guajira in Colombia’s northeast of Colombia.

Díaz’s parents - Luis Manuel Díaz Jiménez and Cilenis Marulanda — were kidnapped by a unit of the ELN at a gas station by armed men on motorcycles.

EXOR SAYS IT HAS NOT BEEN APPROACHED BY FUNDS OVER POSSIBLE JUVENTUS SALE

Chairman and CEO of Exor and Chairman of Fiat Chrisler Automobiles John Elkann. Reuters

Exor (EXOR.AS), the investment company controlled by Italy's Agnelli family, has not received any approach from funds over a possible sale of Serie A soccer club Juventus (JUVE.MI), its Chief Executive John Elkann said on Thursday.

Asked by reporters whether any funds, including Arab or American, had approached Exor, which controls the soccer club, over a possible transaction, Elkann replied: "no".

"Nor have we approached funds, it's not a scenario we're interested in," Elkann said at a news conference before Exor's investor day.

He added that Exor was not considering delisting Juventus.

NBA ROUNUP: LAKERS DROP PISTONS TO HISTORIC LOW

AP Photo

D'Angelo Russell racked up 35 points and nine assists for Los Angeles while the host Detroit Pistons established a franchise record for futility in the Lakers' 133-107 victory on Wednesday night.

Anthony Davis powered for 28 points and 16 rebounds while LeBron James contributed 25 points as the Lakers bounced back from a 44-point loss to Philadelphia on Monday.

Detroit has lost 15 straight games, setting a franchise record for the longest losing streak in a single season. The Pistons lost 14 consecutive games during the 1979-80, 93-94 and 2021-22 campaigns.

Cade Cunningham's 15 points led Detroit. Isaiah Livers had 14 points, while Isaiah Stewart and Ausar Thompson chipped in 12 apiece.

PARIS 2024 BANKS ON FURTHER IMPROVEMENTS TO MAKE RIVER SEINE SUITABLE FOR SWIMMING

Reuters

The River Seine is already suitable for bathing two days out of three on average in the summer, but Paris is hoping to further improve the water quality as next year's Olympics loom.

The primary goal is to make the Seine batheable by 2025, and the Games served as a huge boost, even though some sporting events were cancelled last summer because the health standards were not met following rare heavy rains and a sewer problem.

"The amounts of rain we had had not been (seen) since the 1970s," Pauline Lavaud, the Paris mayor's advisor on energy and climate transition, water and maintenance of public spaces, told reporters.

ARSENAL HITS 6 AND ADVANCES IN CHAMPIONS LEAGUE. MAN UNITED AGAIN SCORES 3 YET STAYS IN LAST PLACE

AP Photo

GENEVA (AP) — Arsenal scored six to advance in the Champions League as a group winner on Wednesday and Manchester United stayed last in its group despite again scoring three times away from home.

Arsenal’s 6-0 rout of Lens ensured second-place PSV Eindhoven also advanced from Group B to the round of 16. PSV's second-half rally to win 3-2 at Sevilla was clinched by United States forward Ricardo Pepi in stoppage time.

There are now 12 confirmed teams in the round of 16 draw on Dec. 18 and Man United is in serious danger of missing out.

The three-time European champion led by two goals after 18 minutes at Galatasaray and 3-2 early in the second half but was pegged back again in a wild 3-3 draw.

United only does topsy-turvy road games in Europe this season after 4-3 losses at group winner Bayern Munich and second-place Copenhagen.

FRANCE 2030, SALT LAKE CITY 2034 ARE THE PREFERRED WINTER GAMES BIDS - IOC

Karl Stoss. Reuters

France 2030 and Salt Lake City 2034 were picked as preferred hosts of the Winter Olympics and their respective bid teams will now go into a dialogue with the International Olympic Committee, the IOC said on Wednesday.

Bid leaders will intensify talks with the IOC, fleshing out plans and state support, with the Olympic governing body to decide on the 2030 and 2034 hosts at its session in July, 2024.

"The IOC Executive Board today invited the French National Olympic Committee and the United States Olympic and Paralympic Committee into targeted dialogues towards hosting the Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games in the French Alps and the 2034 edition in Salt Lake City-Utah," the IOC said in a statement.

"We will start more detailed discussions with the interested parties," Karl Stoss, head of the IOC's Future Host commission, told a press conference.

"They (cities) have now to do their homework. The decision is not made yet. The work is not finished. But we have another six months to come to a decision," he said.

SANDS CASINO FAMILY SAYS THEY'LL BUY MAJORITY OF MAVS FROM CUBAN. AP SOURCES SAYS VALUATION IS $3.5B

Miriam Adelson. AP Photo

Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban has entered into an agreement to sell a majority stake in the NBA franchise to the family that runs the Las Vegas Sands casino company, it was announced Wednesday. The deal could be completed in the coming weeks.

The agreement would be in the valuation range of $3.5 billion, according to a person who spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because that detail was not being made public. Cuban would retain control of basketball operations in the deal.

The company controlled by Miriam Adelson, widow of casino magnate Sheldon Adelson, announced earlier Tuesday it was selling $2 billion of her shares to buy an unspecified professional sports team. It revealed Wednesday that the team was the Mavericks.

“The families are targeting a closing of the transaction by year-end, subject to the satisfaction of customary closing conditions and approval of the NBA Board of Governors,” said the statement released by the Adelson and Dumont families.

KLOPP CALLS ON LIVERPOOL FABS TO CREATE ATMOSPHERE FOR LASK CLASH

Reuters

Liverpool manager Juergen Klopp has urged fans to treat their Europa League group-stage match against LASK at Anfield on Thursday as a "special night" as his side look to seal qualification for the knockout rounds.

Liverpool top Group E with nine points from four games, two ahead of Toulouse, after being beaten 3-2 by the Ligue 1 side earlier this month. Union Saint Gilloise are third with four points, one more than bottom side LASK.

A win against LASK would ensure Liverpool's progress to the last 16 and put them in pole position to finish top of the group.

DONALD TO REMAIN EUROPE RYDER CUP CAPTAIN FOR 2025

Reuters

Luke Donald will remain Europe's Ryder Cup captain for the 2025 edition in New York after leading his team to victory over the United States in Italy last month.

The 45-year-old Englishman will be Europe's first repeat captain since Bernard Gallacher in 1991, 1993 and 1995.

The move will be welcomed by players who chanted 'two more years' at the trophy presentation in Rome.

WOMEN'S ELITE SPORTS REVENUE WILL CROSS BILLION DOLLARS IN 2024: DELOITTE

Reuters

Annual global revenue for women's elite sports will cross the billion-dollar threshold for the first time in 2024, Deloitte said on Wednesday.

The predicted $1.28 billion revenue based on matchday earnings, broadcast and commercial revenue is "at least 300 per cent higher" than their previous valuation three years ago, Deloitte said.

TRAFFIC TO BE HEAVILY RESTRICTED DURING THE GAMES, POLICE WARN

Reuters

Car traffic during the Paris 2024 Olympics will be restricted with pre-registration necessary to enter several zones, although the maximum is being done to preserve the residents' daily lives, the French capital's chief of police said on Wednesday.

"We want to guarantee the highest level of security while safeguarding the continuity of the economical and private lives," Paris police chief Laurent Nunez told a press conference before unveiling a map of restricted areas for the duration of the July 26-Aug. 11 Games.

To a lesser extent, the Paralympics will also have restrictions.

"The plan is not final, we will now enter a phase of consultation to get feedback," Nunez added.

"We are not saying that people should leave Paris. There are a lot of spaces that are not concerned by these measures. And pedestrians are allowed everywhere."

LOADED FIELD OF CFP CONTENDERS FOR LAST 4-TEAM PLAYOFF FUELS CHAMPIONSHIP DRAMA

AP Photo

The four-team College Football Playoff is going out with the most crowded field of contenders and the most consequential championship weekend in the 10-year history of the system.

Eight teams have at least a glimmer of hope to make the field. Yes, that means you, too, Ohio State.

The penultimate CFP rankings were released Tuesday. Georgia remained No. 1. Michigan moved up a spot to second after beating Ohio State. Unbeaten Washington was third, followed by unbeaten Florida State.

Oregon remained fifth, Ohio State slipped to No. 6, Texas was seventh and Alabama eighth.

The field for the playoff will be announced Sunday.

THE NBA’S TOURNAMENT QUARTERFINALS ARE SET

AP Photo

MIAMI (AP) — Khris Middleton had a thought pop into his head immediately after Milwaukee topped Miami to finish group play in the NBA’s In-Season Tournament with an unbeaten record.

“We’re going to Vegas,” he said.

Maybe. But not yet. Middleton didn't know he'd skipped one important step — the quarterfinals.

Hey, some people are evidently still learning the tournament format. It gets simple now, though, with the inaugural event down to its final eight teams.

In the Eastern Conference, it'll be Milwaukee hosting New York on Dec. 5 and Indiana playing host to Boston on Dec. 4; in the Western Conference, it'll be the Los Angeles Lakers hosting Phoenix on Dec. 5 and Sacramento — thanks to a huge comeback over Golden State — playing host to New Orleans on Dec. 4.

The winners go to Las Vegas for semifinal games on Dec. 7, and those winners play Dec. 9 to be the first team to hoist the NBA Cup and win $500,000 per player, $250,000 for those on two-way deals.

WOODS 'FRUSTRATED' THAT PLAYERS WERE LEFT OUT OF PGA-LIV MERGER TALKS

Reuters

Tiger Woods was left "frustrated" by the lack of player involvement in the PGA Tour's talks with Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund (PIF) before their announcement of a framework agreement, the 15-times major winner said on Tuesday.

The PGA Tour, Europe-based DP World Tour and the PIF-backed LIV Golf circuit agreed to unify and move forward in a larger commercial business in June after an acrimonious legal battle lasting more than a year.

The agreement stunned the golf world and raised concerns in Washington over Saudi Arabia's role in the deal and the risks posed by a foreign government entity assuming control over the sport.

Critics have accused the PIF of being a vehicle for the country to improve its reputation, or "sports-washing," as it faces criticism of its human rights record.

The framework agreement is set to expire on Dec. 31 and while Woods said there were "multiple options" they still wanted a deal done by the end of the year.

MARK CUBAN WORKING ON $3.8B SALE OF DALLAS MAVERICKS TO SANDS CASINO FAMILY, AP SOURCE SAYS

AP Photo

Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban is working on a deal to sell a majority stake in the NBA franchise to the family that runs the Las Vegas Sands casino company, a person with knowledge of the talks said Tuesday night.

The agreement would be in the valuation range of $3.5 billion and take weeks for the league to process, according to the person, who spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because details weren't being made public.

Cuban would retain control of basketball operations in the deal. NBA reporter Marc Stein was the first to report the potential sale.

The company controlled by Miriam Adelson, widow of casino magnate Sheldon Adelson, announced earlier Tuesday it was selling $2 billion of her shares to buy an unspecified professional sports team.

Cuban said almost a year ago he was interested in partnering with Sands. He has been a proponent of legalizing gambling in Texas, an issue that didn't make it out of the state Legislature in a biennial session that ended earlier this year.

WOLVES MANAGER O'NEAL LOSING FAITH IN VAR

Wolverhampton Wanderers manager Gary O'Neil has always been a fan of VAR but on Monday he joined the growing chorus of coaches complaining about the review system after his side had two penalties given against them in a 3-2 loss at Fulham.

The spot kicks, converted by Willian, were awarded after a Nelson Semedo challenge on Tom Cairney and a late Joao Gomes challenge on Harry Wilson, the latter given after a VAR review.

ROOM FOR IMPROVEMENT FOR RED BULL? RIVALS HOPE NOT

Reuters

Red Bull principal Christian Horner joked after Formula One's season-ending Abu Dhabi Grand Prix that, with his team winning 21 of 22 races in 2023, there was room for improvement next year.

If the quip raised only a hollow laugh after the most dominant season ever, with triple world champion Max Verstappen setting a string of records including 10 wins in a row and 19 in total, it was because it contained an underlying truth.

Red Bull will hope to defend their titles in 2024, when there will be a record 24 races, with an even better car.

MAN UNITED SET FOR ANOTHER FIERY MATCH AGAINST GALATASARAY WITH CHAMPIONS LEAGUE IN PERIL

AP Photo

If it wasn’t the “Welcome to Hell” signs at the airport, it was the bell boy at the team hotel performing a throat-slitting gesture as the players arrived.

Or the deliberately timed phone calls during the night to disrupt sleep, and the mud and flags thrown at the bus to the stadium.

Or the riot police bundling players down the steps to the locker room with their shields after the match.

Manchester United’s first Champions League match against Galatasaray at the Turkish team’s Ali Sami Yen Stadium has gone down in lore. Thirty years later, United is back in Istanbul and again fighting to stay in the competition — something it failed to do back in 1993.

“It was probably the most intimidating atmosphere I ever played in,” then-United midfielder Bryan Robson has said.

PARIS METEO TICKET PRICE TO DOUBLE DURING 2024 OLYMPICS

Reuters

Paris metro ticket prices will almost double during the 2024 Olympics, the French capital region's president said on Tuesday, adding that residents with passes would be shielded from the temporary rise and visitors would be charged "a fair price".

The mayor of Paris warned last week that public transport services, which are provided by the regional authority, would be insufficient during the events. The Olympics will be held from July 26 to Aug. 11 and the Paralympics from Aug. 28 to Sept 8.

POINT DIFFERENTIALS COULD COME INTO PLAY AS NBA IN-SEASON TOURNAMENT GROUP PHASE ENDS TUESDAY

AP Photo

MIAMI (AP) — Say this for the NBA: It will have some drama for the final night of group play in the inaugural In-Season Tournament.

There are eight games left — all potentially having implications on who will advance.

All teams play four games in the group stage; 14 teams are already done and the other 16 teams wrap up their group slates on Tuesday. Every group winner will reach the quarterfinals, and the best second-place team from each conference will earn a wild-card spot.

There's a really good chance that tiebreakers to separate teams with 3-1 (or maybe even 2-2) records will come into play. The first tiebreaker is head-to-head, and the second is point differential — which certainly raises the possibility that a team with a lead as time is running out in an already-decided game might look for more points in the final seconds.

“We'll just focus on trying to get a win tomorrow,” said Miami coach Erik Spoelstra, whose team plays host to Milwaukee on Tuesday. “That's the most important thing. We know what the differential has to be. You can't go into a game thinking that. That's not how you win games against good teams.”

BARCELONA LOOKS TO REGAIN BEST FORM AND SECUR3 RETURN TO KNOCKOUT STAGE OF CHAMPIONS LEAGUE

AP Photo

MADRID (AP) — A win against Porto will be enough to put Barcelona back in the knockout rounds of the Champions League after two consecutive group-stage eliminations.

It may not be enough, though, to ease the pressure on coach Xavi Hernández, who has struggled to get his team to play well recently.

Barcelona is coming off a stretch that includes a 1-0 loss to Shakhtar Donetsk in its last Champions League game, and a 1-1 draw at Rayo Vallecano in its previous Spanish league match. The team has even produced lackluster performances when winning recent matches.

NBA MVP JOEL EMBIID GETS SIXTH CAREER TRIPLE-DOUBLE TO HELP 76ERS ROUT LAKERS 138-94

AP Photo

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Joel Embiid had 30 points, 11 rebounds and 11 assists to help the Philadelphia 76ers rout LeBron James and the Los Angeles Lakers 138-94 on Monday night.

The reigning NBA MVP, Embiid notched his sixth career triple-double with 2 minutes left in the third quarter. It was Embiid's first of the season and his seventh career game with 10-plus assists.

Embiid's anticipated showdown with James never really materialized. James scored 18 points in 29 minutes but nothing he did could make a dent in the 76ers' lead. He has now played more minutes than any player in NBA history, with playoff time included.

Tyrese Maxey scored 31 points for the 76ers. Anthony Davis had 17 points and 11 rebounds for the Lakers.

MICHIGAN'S JIM HARBAUGH SAYS HE.WOULD TAKE LESS SALARY IF IT MEANT COLLEGE ATHLETES WORLD BE PAID

AP Photo

Michigan coach Jim Harbaugh is ready to take less money if it means college football players and other athletes would be paid.

“For the players to be compensated, I'm using my voice, and I would take less money for the players to have a share. I hope other coaches would use their voice to express the same thing," Harbaugh said Sunday.

Harbaugh, a longtime advocate for paying players, made his comment during a news conference to preview his team's Big Ten championship game against Iowa on Saturday in Indianapolis. He said he was reminded of the sacrifice athletes make when offensive lineman Zak Zinter broke his leg in the third quarter of the Wolverines' 30-24 win over Ohio State.

MARTINEZ SCORES AGAIN AS LEADER INTER DRAWS 1-1 AT SECOND PLACE JUVENTUS IN DERBY D’ITALIA

AP Photo

MILAN (AP) — Lautaro Martínez scored again but Inter Milan had to be content with a share of the spoils as the Serie A leader drew 1-1 at second-place Juventus on Sunday.

Martínez’s 13th league goal of the season canceled out Dušan Vlahović’s opener in the Derby d’Italia.

Inter remained two points above Juventus. Third-place AC Milan is six points behind its city rival, with defending champion Napoli two points further back in fourth. Both Milan and Napoli played on Saturday.

Inter faces another tough trip next weekend when it visits Napoli.

It was a matchup in Turin between two fierce rivals occupying the top two spots. Inter was looking to move five points clear while Juventus knew it could leapfrog into the lead.

Both sides had early chances in a match that was intense and entertaining from the start.

JALEN HURTS RUNS FOR WINNING TD IN OVERTIME, EAGLES RALLY PAST JOSH ALLEN, BILLS 37-34

AP Photo

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Jalen Hurts walked off the Linc field with his arms extended in celebration as the Eagles crowd — which had booed the team off the field at halftime — went wild in appreciation for one more comeback, one more series of stupefying plays their franchise QB has made routine.

Consider one in the fourth quarter, when Hurts rolled to his left and almost seemed out of options. He stopped, spotted Olamide Zaccheaus through a crowd of defenders and threw a pass on the money for a go-ahead score.

Or even the winner, a designed run from a QB who played through a bruised knee this season and yet still dashed virtually untouched for a TD — oh, only his fifth scoring play of the game.

“He made a lot of really clutch plays in that second half,” Philadelphia coach Nick Sirianni said. “Then the big one, obviously, at the end.”

CHAMPIONS LEAGUE GROUP STAGE RESUMES THIS WEEK WITH MUCH AT STAKE FOR ALL TEAMS

GENEVA (AP) — The Champions League group stage moves into the final two rounds of matches on Tuesday with the results also affecting entries to other international competitions this season and next.

The 2025 FIFA Club World Cup. Next season’s Champions League. This season’s Europa League knockout rounds. They're are effectively in play right now.

That gives extra incentive even to those teams which have already advanced to the Champions League round of 16 in February — Manchester City, Real Madrid, Bayern Munich, Inter Milan, Real Sociedad, Leipzig — to keep pushing for the best possible results. Likewise for the six teams already out of contention: Benfica, Red Star Belgrade, Antwerp, Salzburg, Union Berlin, Young Boys.
