Stephen A. Smith Reacts To Shannon Sharpe Leaving ESPN Amid Rape Lawsuit

Stephen A. Smith has an opinion on just about everything ... and that includes a rape lawsuit involving his co-worker Shannon Sharpe, who is now stepping away from ESPN amid the legal process.

Stephen A. reacted to Sharpe's decision to "temporarily" leave his duties on "First Take" in a Friday episode of his YouTube show. The media personalities are friends and folks are interested in how Stephen's processing Shannon's legal issues.

For Stephen, he says it's his personal opinion Shannon is NOT guilty ... though he admits he wasn't there for the allegations and only knows what's been reported in the media.

Stephen says he finds it hard to believe Shannon would assault or rape anyone -- as a woman is accusing him of doing -- but he says, again, it's just his opinion.

Sharpe says he will be back on ESPN when football season rolls around in the fall ... and Stephen A. says he will be there for Sharpe "if he needs me" because "that's what friends do, even in the toughest of times, sometimes especially the toughest of times, they ain't telling you you're right all the time, and hell, sometimes they may not stop you from falling into that abyss, but they're there to lift you up when nobody else will."

For his part, Shannon maintains he did nothing wrong ... even though he says he offered his accuser a $10 million settlement that she turned down.

SHANNON SHARPE NEW AUDIO RECORDING ... 'I Might Choke You in Public'

Shannon Sharpe's accuser's lawyer has released new audio in which you can hear the ESPN commentator threatening to choke the woman in public -- but the Pro Football Hall of Famer's team is adamant it's not what it sounds like.

Attorney Tony Buzbee dropped the file Wednesday morning and issued a statement, saying Sharpe’s attacks on him and his "Jane Doe" client were a "big, stupid mistake."

Buzbee goes on to say the audio "provides a fair picture of the relationship shortly before the alleged assault in this case," although he has not said when it was recorded.

The clip starts off while the two are apparently in the middle of a phone call, with Sharpe's accuser asking the former NFL star if he's coming to Los Angeles, and he confirms he is.

Then the accuser, who was allegedly 19 at the time she met Sharpe, says she doesn't know why Sharpe -- who was in his mid-50s -- would want to go out on the town. Sharpe tells her not to worry, and the conversation soon turns to her getting choked.

She tells Sharpe she has no interest in being choked -- but Sharpe seems to ignore her. He says ... "I might choke you in public ... big Black guy chokes small white woman."

She responds that "it's not a good look" ... prompting Sharpe to accuse her of doing something to him, but it's not clear what that is. The discussion ends with Sharpe asking, "Well, what?"

Sharpe's legal team insists conversations of this nature were common in their relationship and don't indicate serious threats of violence. They point to a text message -- which they say was sent by Doe to Sharpe in October 2023 -- that shows Doe asking Sharpe "to put a dog collar around my neck and choke me with it while ur f***ing me."

A rep for Sharpe added ... "This is a very small excerpt with no date or context attached to it."

As you know ... Doe filed a lawsuit Sunday claiming Sharpe raped her in late 2024 and early 2025.

Sharpe said he was planning on suing the accuser for defamation, and his attorney, Lanny J. Davis, held a press conference Tuesday, denying his client did anything wrong and releasing a bunch of text messages, claiming they "show that she likes and asks for fantasy role playing and other forms of unusual sexual behavior."

Davis also said he believes the messages show a change in her behavior when Sharpe refused to have a child with her.

Shannon Sharpe's accuser confronted him over the alleged January 2025 sexual assault ... with a newly released text message showing the woman told him, "no means no shannon."

The convo took place on the evening of Jan. 2, 2025 -- the day Jane Doe alleged in her lawsuit that Sharpe raped her.

Doe tells Sharpe in the message, "I cried when u left because I begged you to put a condom on and not put it in my ass and u didn’t listen."

"I don’t care what our history is," she added, "no means no shannon."

She went on to tell Sharpe "idk how to process this" ... and in response, Sharpe asked if he could call her later. It's unclear if the two were able to talk about the matter on the phone.

The texts were released to TMZ Sports along with hundreds of others on Tuesday afternoon. Most of the messages show what appears to be a kinky, consensual relationship between the two.

ESPN SAYS SHANNON SHARPE WILL COHOST 'FIRST TAKE' MONDAY AFTER INSTAGRAM INCIDENT

• The analyst and podcaster broadcast live audio of an apparent sexual encounter on Instagram.
• ESPN considers the matter closed.

Shannon Sharpe said Wednesday that he’s an “active, healthy male.” He is still actively employed by ESPN as well.

The network said Thursday that Sharpe will cohost First Take as usual Monday, less than a week after the NFL Hall of Famer went viral for sharing an apparent sexual encounter on Instagram.

On Wednesday, Sharpe’s Instagram went live with audio of the 56-year-old and a woman having what Sharpe later confirmed was a sexual encounter. An employee of Sharpe’s later posted from his account that the NFL legend had been “hacked,” but Sharpe admitted Wednesday night that the audio was genuine. 

“I threw my phone on the bed, engaged in an activity,” Sharpe said Wednesday night on his YouTube show “Nightcap,” which he cohosts with Chad Ochocinco. “I did not know IG Live. I’ve never turned IG Live on so I don’t know how it works and all of sudden my other phone is going off.”

While Sharpe claimed it was an accident, going live on Instagram requires users to open the app and press several buttons to begin a live broadcast.

Sharpe said his “heart sank” when his longtime “marketing guy” told him that viewers could hear what sounded like a sex act.

Sharpe, who began appearing regularly on First Take in 2023, said he immediately alerted ESPN that the audio was genuine. (ESPN said that his absence from the show on Thursday was in line with his normal schedule, which has him appearing on-air on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Wednesdays.) In June, Sharpe agreed to a long-term contract extension with ESPN, tying the podcaster and network together as First Take continues to dominate morning sports talk. Sharpe also hosts the ultra-successful interview podcast Club Shay Shay.

“I called my agents, I called ESPN, I just got to tell them the truth,” Sharpe said Wednesday night. “My phone wasn’t hacked, it wasn’t a prank, it was me being a healthy, active male,” he said.

Sharpe and Ochocinco also referred to ongoing speculation about Sharpe’s sexuality, and Sharpe repeatedly denied that the incident was “staged” to make a point.

He then extensively discussed the incident with Ochocinco, the former NFL receiver turned media personality. After a somber opening monologue about how he was “embarrassed” about having “one of your most intimate details” broadcast worldwide, the pair launched into a raucous discussion. 

Johnson mocked Sharpe for his ineptitude with technology, saying his cohost would regularly “butt-dial” him. Sharpe joked that his underwear was headed to the Hall of Fame.

The episode already has been viewed over one million times, and its primary sponsor was an erectile dysfunction drug, which Sharpe seamlessly opened the show with an ad read for. (Later in the show, he joked that “I’m looking for a mattress sponsor now.”)

Inappropriate live broadcasts on Instagram have landed ESPN talent in hot water before. In 2021, former NBA player Paul Pierce was fired for posting a video of himself in a room with scantily clad dancers and cigars. (Pierce revisited the incident earlier this year, saying “I didn’t do nothing illegal, and that’s the story. I got fired for literally having a good time.”)

ESPN considers the matter with Sharpe closed. A spokesperson for the network said that Sharpe’s comments about the incident on “Nightcap” have addressed the issue.

It looks like everyone's favorite morning TV uncle will be back on the small screen sometime soon.

Just a few days after his final show on FS1's "Skip and Shannon's Undisputed," NFL Hall of Famer Shannon Sharpe took to Twitter to just check in, let people know how he's doing and inform everyone that he'll be back to the early morning TV grind shortly.
