Former two-division UFC champion Conor McGregor announced he’ll undergo surgery following a knee injury sustained during the main event of UFC 329.

McGregor ended a five-year hiatus when he returned to the Octagon at T-Mobile Arena on July 11. But his main event fight with former featherweight and BMF champion Max Holloway lasted just 69 seconds when a knee injury sustained in the bout’s opening seconds proved too much to overcome and referee Mike Beltran was forced to wave off the contest.

Immediately following the bout, McGregor shared an update to his followers on social media.

“My head gasket is gone. Destroyed,” he wrote on X.

“I had no injury / injuries going into the fight. I was throwing kicks, planted and jumping, all throughout camp as well as backstage before the fight. This came out of nowhere. I am beyond dark here. I can only describe it as hell.”

McGregor continued and directly addressed suggestions online that he was carrying an injury into the bout.

“I was so sharp and so ready for this fight, I cannot believe what has happened,” he wrote.

“The talk of me being off while walking in to the fight is nonsense. I was calm, ready, and confident. I am in shock what has taken place. The devil is literally staring at me right in front of my face here. I am not engaging. I will be at church tomorrow.”

McGregor then defiantly declared that he will fight back from his latest injury setback to return to the Octagon again.

“I will overcome this. I will not be deterred. I will return.”

Speaking to reporters backstage at the UFC 329 post-fight press conference, UFC President and CEO Dana White offered his thoughts on McGregor’s situation.

“Listen, everybody who knows anything about the fight business – and it’s been a big topic of discussion leading up to this fight – five years off, in this sport, is rough,” he said.

“Who knew what Conor was capable of as far as cardio, or whatever else, after a five-year layoff. And, well, there you go.

“We’re assuming [he sustained a] blown ACL. I’m no doctor, but that’s what I figured when I saw it, and the doctors think the same thing, too.”

White said he wasn’t sure what the future held for McGregor, but he didn’t have to wait long for “The Notorious” to make clear his plans as the Irishman posted an update to his Instagram on Monday.

“Surgery. Prehab. Return to martial arts practice. Go again,” he wrote on X.

Alex has suffered a small C7 vertebrae fracture along with a broken right collarbone. The injury will be surgically treated using a plate to stabilize the shoulder area.

Alex is scheduled to have surgery today at the General Hospital of Catalonia.

Other medical evaluations will be done next week to monitor the progress of recovery.

Two surgeries in quick succession for Marquez, who is now heading home to continue rehabilitation

Reigning MotoGP champion Marc Marquez underwent two successful operations on Sunday morning after flying back to Madrid during the French Grand Prix weekend.

The factory Ducati rider was forced to withdraw from the remainder of the Le Mans round after breaking his foot in a nasty highside in the sprint race.

Marquez returned to Spain on Saturday night before heading to a hospital in the morning for double surgery.

The first procedure addressed the fifth metatarsal on his right foot, which he broke when he hit the ground on the penultimate lap of the sprint.

The second operation was aimed at recovering two screws that had become dislodged from their positions when he was hit by Aprilia rider Marco Bezzecchi at last October’s Indonesian Grand Prix. 

This corrective action had originally been scheduled for the week after the Catalan Grand Prix, with doctors having identified the issue after Marquez reported pain in the wake of a tough race at Jerez. However, he had not disclosed this planned surgery to the public prior to Saturday’s crash.

The nine-time world champion will now return home to continue his rehabilitation. He has already been ruled out from next week’s Barcelona race, and his participation in the Italian Grand Prix on 31 May remains subject to his recovery.

“Marc Marquez is currently recovering at the Ruber Internacional Hospital in Madrid, where he underwent successful double surgery this morning,” Ducati said in a statement.

"The medical team, led by Dr. Samuel Antuna alongside colleagues Dr. Ignacio Roger de Ona, Dr. Andres Maldonado, Dr. Jorge de las Heras, Dr. Raul Barco and Dr. Juan de Miguel, successfully stabilised the fracture in the fifth metatarsal of the rider’s right foot. This injury was sustained yesterday as a consequence of the highside crash in the final stages of the sprint race at the French Grand Prix.

"Simultaneously, Marquez underwent a second, pre-planned surgical procedure to fix a past injury in his right shoulder. This previous trauma had become painful again following the violent crash at last year’s Indonesian Grand Prix. The doctors removed two screws and a bone fragment from a previous Latarjet (December 2019) surgery that has shifted compressing the radial nerve.

"As previously announced, the Ducati Lenovo Team rider will not participate in next week's Catalan GP. He will remain in the hospital overnight and he will back home tomorrow to begin the rehabilitation. The progress over the upcoming weeks will determine the time for his return to competitions.”

Following his withdrawal from Sunday’s Le Mans race, Marquez has slipped to seventh in the standings, 71 behind championship leader Bezzecchi.

Luka Modric has undergone successful surgery after fracturing his left cheekbone weeks before the 40-year-old AC Milan and Croatia football midfielder ⁠is due to participate in his fifth World Cup.

Modric sustained the injury following a clash of heads with Juventus midfielder Manuel Locatelli during Sunday's 0-0 Serie A draw at the San Siro. He left the field`with 10 minutes left.

Although clearly in pain, Modric remained on the bench until the end of ⁠the game without receiving medical treatment.

The Croatian federation said national medical staff remained in contact with Modric, who captains the side, as well as his club.

"I've been talking to Luka, and wished him ‌a successful surgery and a quality ‌and speedy recovery," Croatia head coach Zlatko Dalic said. "I am convinced that he will do everything to be ready `for the World Cup, and we'll provide full support.

"I am confident that the recovery will go according to plan and that Luka, as team captain, will lead us at another major competition this summer."

AC Milan are third in the standings, 12 points behind leaders Inter Milan with four games remaining, and Modric is doubtful to take any part in their season run-in.

A protective mask may be needed should he recover in time for the World Cup, which begins ‌on 11 June. Croatia will face England, ‌Ghana and Panama in Group L.

TIGER WOODS' BACK SURGERY CASTS DOUBT ON FUTURE COMEBACK

Disc replacement probably rules out champion golfer’s appearance in Hero World Challenge

Tiger Woods has undergone his seventh back surgery — his second in just over a year — after doctors discovered a collapsed lumbar disc that had caused severe pain and mobility issues.

The 49-year-old golfer announced on social media on Saturday that the latest procedure, a disc replacement, was performed on Friday in New York.

“After experiencing pain and lack of mobility in my back, I consulted with doctors and surgeons to have tests taken,” Woods wrote. “The scans determined that I had a collapsed disc in L4/5, disc fragments and a compromised spinal canal. I opted to have my disc replaced yesterday, and I already know I made a good decision for my health and my back.”

The operation adds to an extensive medical history for Woods, who has endured surgeries on his back, knees, leg and Achilles tendon over the past decade. He has not competed in 2025 while recovering from a ruptured Achilles tendon suffered in March, and it is unclear when — or if — he will return to competitive golf.

The 15-time Major champion’s latest setback likely rules out appearances in December’s Hero World Challenge, which he hosts, and the PNC Championship, where he has played alongside his son Charlie.

Since surviving a 2021 car crash that nearly resulted in the amputation of his right leg, Woods has played only sparingly — just 15 official events in four years, often withdrawing mid-tournament due to pain.

His most recent competitive round came in the TGL simulator league he co-founded with Rory McIlroy, though his October surgery now makes participation in the league’s upcoming season improbable.

BARCELONA OFFER NEW JOAN GARCIA UPDATE AFTER GOALKEEPER UNDERGOES SURGERY

Barcelona have confirmed that Joan Garcia has undergone successful knee surgery and will miss the next 4-6 weeks in a fresh update on their injured goalkeeper.

The stopper picked up the injury in the win over Real Oviedo and went under the knife on Saturday morning in Barcelona.

Here’s the club’s official statement:

“Joan García underwent surgery this Saturday on a torn medial meniscus in his left knee. Dr Joan Carles Monllau performed an arthroscopy at the Hospital de Barcelona, and it has been confirmed that his recovery time will be between 4 and 6 weeks, depending on how he progresses.”

Barcelona will hope that Garcia’s recovery is as swift as anticipated and that he will be back in action soon for Hansi Flick’s side.

Wojciech Szczęsny will take over as No.1 in the meantime, while Diego Kochen is reportedly set to return from Under-20 duty with the United States to serve as the veteran’s back-up.

The German needed the operation to address persistent lower back problems.

March-Andre ter Stegen missed nearly all of last season because of a tendon rupture in his knee, and in 2023 he missed about two months because of another back operation.

Barcelona goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen underwent successful back surgery on Tuesday, the club said. Barcelona did not say how long Ter Stegen will be sidelined, but the player had said the recovery time would be about three months. Ter Stegen needed the operation to address persistent lower back problems. The 33-year-old German missed nearly all of last season because of a tendon rupture in his knee, and in 2023 he missed about two months because of another back operation.

Barcelona added Espanyol goalkeeper Joan García to its squad last month. Iñaki Peña was the team's reserve goalkeeper last season.

West Ham players warmed up in Michail Antonio's No. 9 shirt before they played Wolves in the Premier League on Monday after the forward was involved in a car crash on Saturday.

The club have confirmed that Antonio has successfully undergone surgery for a lower-limb fracture after his Ferrari was involved in a single-vehicle collision after which he was airlifted to a nearby hospital.

On Monday, West Ham confirmed they would pay tribute to the forward.

"Our players will show their support for teammate Michail Antonio tonight ... Ahead of our fixture against Wolves, the players will warm-up in special 'Antonio 9' shirts, as well as walking out in tops adorning the striker's name," West Ham said in a statement.

West Ham went on to win the game at the London Stadium 2-1 owing to goals from Tomás Soucek and Jarrod Bowen. Soucek held up nine fingers in a reference to his teammate as he celebrated, while Bowen raised an Antonio shirt above his head in front the Hammers fans after slotting the winning goal.

Soucek told Sky Sports after the game that the squad had spoken to Antonio via video call earlier on Monday, adding that the Jamaica forward was in good spirits.

Antonio has featured in all 14 of West Ham's Premier League matches so far this season.

Shohei Ohtani underwent shoulder surgery Tuesday to repair a labrum tear sustained during the World Series, the Los Angeles Dodgers announced, adding that they expect him to be ready for spring training.

Ohtani suffered what the Dodgers initially described as a subluxation -- or slight dislocation -- of his left shoulder on an attempted steal of second base in Game 2 of the World Series on Oct. 26. He then played the next three games at Yankee Stadium in noticeable pain, wincing after some of his swings and recording just one hit in 11 at-bats while Los Angeles clinched the championship.

Before the injury, the Dodgers were hoping Ohtani could restart his throwing program earlier than usual this offseason in anticipation of him returning to a two-way role in 2025. It is unclear how this surgery, performed by Dr. Neal ElAttrache in Los Angeles, might impact the timing of that, but it was done on Ohtani's non-throwing shoulder.

Ohtani was throwing his regularly scheduled bullpen sessions, the last step in his rehabilitation from a second major elbow surgery, leading up to the time when he was injured.

The last time the Dodgers won the World Series, in 2020, Cody Bellinger suffered a similar injury while celebrating with Enrique Hernandez and underwent labrum surgery that November. Bellinger was in the lineup for Opening Day in 2021, though his offensive numbers dropped dramatically over the next two seasons.

However, Bellinger injured his right shoulder, which he leads with when hitting. Ohtani injured his back shoulder, considered to be less of an issue in the batter's box.

Brazil forward Neymar will miss the 2024 Copa América in the United States because of a serious knee injury he suffered in October, Brazilian team doctor Rodrigo Lasmar said Tuesday.

The Al Hilal star, 31, suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament and meniscus in his left knee during his country's World Cup qualifying loss to Uruguay on Oct. 17, before undergoing surgery two weeks later.
