PARIS SAINT-GERMAIN VS BAYERN MUNICH [5-4] - CHAMPIONS LEAGUE SEMI-FINAL FIRST LEG 2025/2026 - TACTICAL ANALYSIS
Paris Saint-Germain hosted Bayern Munich for the first leg of the 2025/2026 UEFA Champions League semi-final at Parc des Princes.
Widely gaining popularity as one of the most entertaining games in football history, this fixture had it all, with the hosts edging past their competitors with a 5-4 win.
PSG and Bayern have two of the most ruthless attacking trios in Europe this season, as evidenced by the quality, speed, and effectiveness of their attacking moves on the night.
Both sides, on several occasions, opened up their opponents with ease, which made for a nerve-wracking game overall.
Through this tactical analysis, we aim to discuss Paris Saint-Germain’s and Bayern Munich’s approach to the game, areas both sides struggled in, and find out where Bayern can hurt PSG in the second leg.
Paris Saint-Germain Vs Bayern Munich Lineups & Formations
Let's look at how Luis Enrique and Vincent Kompany fielded their squads.
PSG Lineup Vs Bayern Munich
PSG played in a 4-3-3 formation.
Matvey Safonov started between the sticks.
The back four were Achraf Hakimi (right-back), skipper Marquinhos (right centre-back), Willian Pacho (left centre-back), and Nuno Mendes (left-back).
The latter was replaced by Lucas Hernández (84’).
João Neves, Vitinha, and Warren Zaïre-Emery were the midfield three.
The latter was substituted by Fabián Ruiz at the 64th minute.
Désiré Doué (right) and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia (left) were the two wingers, with Ousmane Dembélé as the striker.
Bradley Barcola came on for Doué (70’) and Senny Mayulu for Kvaratskhelia (84’).
Bayern Munich Lineup Vs PSG
Bayern played in a 4-2-3-1 formation.
Skipper Manuel Neuer started in goal.
Josip Stanišić (right-back), Dayot Upamecano (right centre-back), Jonathan Tah (left centre-back), and Alphonso Davies (left-back) were the back four.
Konrad Laimer replaced the latter at 46 minutes.
Joshua Kimmich and Aleksandar Pavlović played as the double pivot.
The latter made way for Nicolas Jackson (90’ +3).
Michael Olise (right) and Luis Díaz (left) were the two wingers, with Jamal Musiala as the attacking midfielder.
Musiala came off for Leon Goretzka (79’).
Harry Kane played as the lone striker.
Paris Saint-Germain & Bayern Munich Style Of Play
PSG and Bayern share similar identities in their approach to the game.
Both sides are brilliant examples of total football, showcasing frequent positional rotations both in and out of possession.
An example: Vitinha, a centre-midfielder, operates in the wide channel.
He attracts multiple opponents before moving the ball to the half-space.
Meanwhile, the winger moves into the half-space.
For Bayern, Kane frequently dropped deep into midfield to offer an additional option for progression.
Whenever the centre-backs followed him, other teammates exploited the space higher up the pitch.
This was the case with Bayern’s defenders as well.
During a build-up situation for PSG, both Bayern centre-backs (Upamecano and Tah) follow an opponent each deep into the mid-third, while Stanisić also follows an opponent in the half-space.
With defenders from both sides jumping in this manner, there were multiple instances when they delayed the opposition’s progression or even won the ball.
However, there were also scenarios where the opponent bypassed the pressure and went straight to a counterattack.

VINCENT KOMOANY ON PEOPLE APPRECIATING HIM
🚨 Vincent Kompany on people appreciating him: “Don't believe the hype, don't believe the drama”.
“When I arrived here at Bayern, I'd been promoted with 101 points, then relegated with 20, then won the league here – two years ago I was the worst manager, and today I’m the very best”.
“If you let yourself be influenced by all that noise, you’ll end up getting worse. It’s nicer this way, but I can live with criticism. It really doesn't matter to me”.

REPORT: JAMAL MUSIALA'S CONTRACT EXTENSION AT BAYERN MUNICH SEES HIS SALARY 'APPROACH 30 MILLION'

Jamal Musiala’s contract extension at Bayern Munich last season was quite a big story. For one, the extension reportedly bumped the 21-year-old up to the same wage as top earner Harry Kane on €25 million a year. He was also reportedly granted a release clause in his contract, a controversial measure for the Bavarians giants.
But, according to Bild, Musiala’s contract is even more beneficial to the former Chelsea FC youngster than it seems. The inconsistent German news outlet reports, as captured by @iMiaSanMia, Musiala could earn even more than first expected:
Jamal Musiala is currently the highest paid player at FC Bayern, earning more than Harry Kane. With all bonuses and clauses included, Musiala’s Bayern salary approaches €30m gross per year.
So what exactly does “approaches 30 million” mean, exactly? It is reasonable to assume, if this report is true, that this extra money is related to bonuses. They could even be fairly obscure bonuses, which would explain why they were initially missed.
But this is also Bild, who like to report Bayern’s wages very inconsistently. So perhaps they are simply wrong.

EX-REAL MADRID, BAYERN MÜNCHEN AND BRAZIL STAR UNDERGOES OUTRAGEOUS PHYSICAL TRANSFORMATION AT 51
Not many players end up looking in better physical condition after the end of their careers, let alone into their fifties. Yet former Brazil, Bayern Munich and Real Madrid midfielder Ze Roberto looks as young as he did 20 years ago after becoming a personal trainer.
There have been some recent examples of players looking completely different after the end of their careers. Ex-Real Madrid man Mesut Ozil has clearly spent plenty of time in the gym since retirement, while Atletico Madrid and Liverpool striker Fernando Torres has certainly bulked up since the end of his career too.
Ze Roberto: Not slowing down at 51
As highlighted by Marca, Ze Roberto has dedicated his newfound time to fitness since ending his career. Roberto has always been physically gifted, possessing remarkable stamina and good mobility for the duration of his career.
He pursued his career well into his forties, eventually calling time on a 22-year career in 2017, at the age of 43 following a spell at Palmeiras. Despite his age, Ze Roberto was still competing at the top level in Brazil. Eight years have passed, but Ze Roberto looks no worse for it, as evidenced by some of the photos posted on his social media.
Ze Roberto’s Real Madrid career
Real Madrid was Ze Roberto’s first landing spot in Europe, making the switch at the age of 21 from Portuguesa in his native Brazil. He was initially loaned out to Flamengo, and across two seasons made just 21 appearances over a spell totalling 18 months actually at the club, in which he scored once and gave two assists.

Four of those appearances did come in Real Madrid’s 1998 Champions League triumph though, and he picked up a winners’ medal for the 1997 La Liga title too. He is perhaps best remebered for his time at Bayern Munich though, where he spent the longest time in his career, winning four Bundesligas, and for his 84 caps and six goals with Brazil, which yielded two Copa America titles, somewhat unfortunately missing out on their 2002 World Cup triumph, despite playing in the 1998 and 2006 editions.

LUIS DIAZ MAKES TOUCHING TRIBUTE TO FORMER LIVERPOOL TEAMMATE DIOGO JOTA AS HE SCORES FOR BAYERN MÜNCHEN ON DEBUT
Luis Diaz paid tribute to Diogo Jota by emulating his celebration after scoring for Bayern Munich in the Franz Beckenbauer Supercup.
The winger has made his first competitive appearance for Bayern following a £65.5million transfer from Liverpool earlier in the summer.

After Harry Kane put them ahead against VfB Stuttgart, Diaz scored in the second half with a header from Serge Gnabry's cross.
He then performed the video game celebration that Jota iconically did before he and his brother Andre Silva tragically died last month.
Diaz and Jota made 73 appearances together for Liverpool and won the Premier League title at Anfield last season.
They also collected winners' medals in the FA Cup and Carabao Cup.
Darwin Nunez also did the celebration for Liverpool in a pre-season friendly against Preston North End.
Although Jamie Leweling netted late on for Stuttgart, the goals from Kane and Diaz were enough for Bayern to win 2-1.
Their victory has come on a weekend full of tributes for Jota and Silva after they passed in a car accident in Spain.
Paying tribute to Jota and Silva
Liverpool, for whom Jota scored 65 goals in 182 matches, unveiled fan mosaics for the brothers before their 4-2 win against Bournemouth.
'DJ 20' was raised in The Kop, whilst the Sir Kenny Dalglish Stand held up 'AS 30'.
Supporters inside Anfield also performed an emotional rendition of 'You'll Never Walk Alone' before a period of silence

Liverpool fans then chanted 'Oh he wears the number 20' during the 20th minute of the match.
At full-time, Mohamed Salah appeared to be fighting back tears amid the poignant occasion.
Jota joined Liverpool in 2020 from Wolves, where he netted 44 times in 131 outings.
The club also prepared tributes for him and Silva at Molineux ahead of their Premier League fixture against Manchester City.
A large tifo of Jota was displayed before kick-off with a banner that read 'We'll remember you when you walk in fields of gold'.
Wolves then played his favourite song, Fields of Gold by Sting, on the speakers inside the ground.

Similar to Liverpool, fans applauded him during the 18th minute in reference to the shirt number he wore for the club.
Liverpool recently announced that the no. 20 shirt has been retired across all levels at the club in tribute to Jota.
