CADE CUNNINGHAM BECOMES SIXTH ACTIVE NBA PLAYER TO GET A NIKE SIGNATURE SHOE

As Detroit Pistons All-Star Cade Cunningham sat across from Houston Rockets superstar Kevin Durant, someone he grew up watching in Arlington, Texas, a firm dap between the two Nike athletes solidified what seemed to be brewing since last season.

Cunningham confirmed to Durant that Nike is lining up a signature shoe for him that is set to debut in the spring of 2027. The 24-year-old joins Durant, LeBron James, Giannis Antetokounmpo, Ja Morant and Devin Booker as the only active NBA players with Nike signature shoes. (Jordan Brand, a subsidiary of Nike, has signature shoes for Jayson Tatum, Luka DončiΔ‡ and Zion Williamson.)

“I don’t got no words about it, bro,” Cunningham said to Durant in a video released by Boardroom, the sports, business and entertainment media brand founded by Durant and agent Rich Kleiman. “It’s a dream come true, bro.”

Nike has been making Cunningham player edition G.T. Cut shoes with his logo on the heel since last season. Cunningham debuted various colorways throughout the calendar year and had a new colorway as recently as Nov. 10, when he scored a career-high 46 points against the Washington Wizards.

While Cunningham has missed the Pistons’ last two games with a hip contusion, he is on pace for another career season, averaging 27.5 points, 9.9 assists, 5.4 rebounds and 1.4 steals per game. He has spearheaded Detroit’s 11-2 start and revitalized the Pistons’ franchise in the process.

Durant and Cunningham reflected on a conversation they had over the summer about the gravity of the situation. As Cunningham thought back on the conversation, Durant beamed with excitement.

“We were just talking about the Nike game and what it means,” Durant said. “How important that is to us. For you to get your own shoe, and for you to have a legacy. Do you know how big that is, bruh?”

Durant went on to give Cunningham props for having “one of the coldest logos” he’s ever seen, and encouraged Cunningham to be as hands-on during the design process as possible.

After the Pistons’ 28-game losing streak during the 2023-24 season, Monday’s Nike announcement felt like the culmination of the turbulent beginning to his NBA career. Cunningham is now officially slated to become one of the faces of Nike Basketball.

JA MORANT LAWSUIT PROVIDES GLIMPSE INTO HIS YOUTH, FAMILY AND CONTENTIOUS PICKUP GAME

AP Photo

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) — A pickup basketball game at Ja Morant's parents' home near Memphis two summers ago quickly turned a day of fun, food, family and friends into chaos.

Under the hot July sun, the trash-talking escalated between the Memphis Grizzlies star and a local high school player who was friends with Morant's sister and had been guarding him that day, according to witnesses.

During a check-ball sequence to start a game, Joshua Holloway hurled a hard pass from in close that hit Morant in the face, leading Morant to punch the 17-year-old in the chin. Morant's childhood friend Davonte Pack then punched him again, knocking him to the ground, witnesses said. As Holloway was being escorted away, he said he was going to “light up” the place like “fireworks,” according to people who were there.

On Wednesday, lawyers for Morant, 24, and Holloway, now 18, will return to court for a pretrial hearing in a lawsuit the teen filed against the mercurial player. Morant, who was not charged in the Holloway incident, is set to return Tuesday from a 25-game suspension that was levied against him last summer after he flashed a gun in two livestreamed videos. Pack, who was charged with misdemeanor assault before the charge was dropped, is also a defendant in the lawsuit, which seeks damages.

NBA SUSPENDS JA MORANT 25 OVER ALLEGED FIREARM VIDEO

The National Basketball Association (NBA) has suspended Memphis Grizzlies guard Ja Morant 25 games without pay after finding he "intentionally and prominently" displayed a firearm in a live-streamed video on May 13.

The two-time All-Star was previously suspended for eight games in March after he appeared in another social media video holding a firearm at a nightclub.

The Grizzlies suspended Morant from team activities in May over the latest incident, in which he appeared to pose with a firearm in a car, conduct that the NBA found to be "detrimental to the league."

"Ja Morant's decision to once again wield a firearm on social media is alarming and disconcerting given his similar conduct in March for which he was already suspended eight games," NBA Commissioner Adam Silver said in a statement.

"The potential for other young people to emulate Ja's conduct is particularly concerning.

"Under these circumstances, we believe a suspension of 25 games is appropriate and makes clear that engaging in reckless and irresponsible behaviour with guns will not be tolerated."

Morant took accountability for his actions last month and released another statement after the suspension was announced, apologising to the NBA, the Grizzlies and the city of Memphis.

"I'm sorry for the harm I've done. To the kids who look up to me, I'm sorry for failing you as a role model. I promise I'm going to be better," Morant said in a statement reported by ESPN.

"To all of my sponsors, I'm going to be a better representation of our brands. And to all of my fans, I'm going to make it up to you, I promise.

"I'm spending the off-season and my suspension continuing to work on my own mental health and decision making. I'm also going to be training so that I'm ready to go when I can be back... I'm so sorry I won't be out there with you (team mates) at the beginning of the season."

The suspension was effectively immediately and remains in effect through the first 25 games of the 2023-24 NBA regular season.
