NAOYA INOUE VS. ALAN PICASSO PREDICTION: HOW WILL THE RING V MAIN EVENT GO?

RIYADH, Saudi Arabia – Pound-for-pound star Naoya Inoue will make his fourth appearance of the calendar year when he defends his undisputed and Ring Magazine junior featherweight championships against Mexico’s Alan Picasso at the Mohammed Abdo Arena on Saturday.

The 12-round bout is the main event of the eagerly anticipated "Ring V: Night of the Samurai" card in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

The 32-year-old Inoue (31-0, 27 KOs) stopped Ye Joon Kim (KO 4) and Ramon Cardenas (TKO 8) this year before outpointing former unified titleholder Murodjon Akhmadaliev in September. The Japanese warrior will be looking to shine in his Riyadh Season debut and appears to be taking this assignment very seriously as talks of a superfight against elite-level compatriot Junto Nakatani intensify.

“I’ve always had [Nakatani] in mind, but now that I’m here [in Riyadh], all my concentration and focus is on Picasso,” stated Inoue during the Grand Arrivals on Tuesday. “[With Terence Crawford’s retirement], I’d like to plan out a great match to be deserving of being pound-for-pound champion.”

Picasso (32-0-1, 17 KOs) is currently rated No. 4 by The Ring at 122 pounds. In his most recent outing, in July, he was pushed hard by Kyonosuke Kameda before claiming a 10 round majority decision victory. The 25-year-old pressure fighter has been the WBC’s mandatory challenger since August 2024 and will be contesting his first world title bout.

“I’ve been waiting a long time and prepared really well for this,” Picasso said. “I’m maybe not the strongest fighter, maybe not the quickest fighter, but I’m mentally very strong at the moment. I’ve been getting ready for this with the help of my family and we can do it.” The Ring provides some pre-fight analysis and makes a final pick on the outcome.

Naoya Inoue vs. Alan Picasso fight prediction

It’s no embarrassment that Picasso comes into this showdown as a +1400 underdog in a two-horse race. Almost any 122-pound fighter, with the obvious exception of Nakatani, would be given next to no chance of vanquishing “The Monster”.

Picasso is a quality operator and has a lot going for him. The challenger has a three-inch height advantage (5-foot-8 to 5-foot-5) and a two-and-a-half-inch reach advantage (70 inches to 67 ½ inches). He is also seven years younger than the champion and will be hoping to make that count.

As is often the case with Mexican fighters, Picasso is an aggressive volume puncher. That style is in his DNA. While he can operate efficiently on the outside, the challenger prefers to close the gap with the jab and go to work with hooks and uppercuts at mid-to-close range. In that posture, Picasso is a handful and has excellent punch variation.

Making all this work against Inoue, however, will be a tall order. Should the champ elect to stand off, it’s difficult to foresee Picasso outboxing him. Inoue is the faster and more skilled fighter of the two by far. On the flip side, if Picasso manages to get in close, he’s likely to encounter the kind of hellfire counterpunching that he’s never seen before.

The style looks made-to-order for Inoue, so the result will depend on how he wants to win. Against “MJ” Akhmadaliev, the future Hall of Famer produced a brilliant exhibition of boxing skill and movement to flummox the Uzbekistan native over the distance. If Inoue adopts that approach, then perhaps he goes the distance in back-to-back fights for the first time in his career.

That’s not what I envision. With Nakatani waiting in the wings, my guess is that Inoue will want to make a serious statement of intent. Invariably, Picasso will have to close the distance and is likely to come off second best in most of the exchanges. As the punishment increases, the damage will mount, bringing around a mercy stoppage late in the fight. There may also be a knockdown or two.

Prediction: Inoue TKO 10

ANTHONY JOSHUA APOLOGISES TO JAKE PAUL'S MUM AFTER BRUTAL KNOCKOUT AS EDDIE HEARN CALLED OUT

Anthony Joshua proved to be the perfect gentleman following his brutal knockout of Jake Paul in Miami on Friday night

Anthony Joshua apologised to Jake Paul’s mum after his brutal knockout victory over the YouTuber-turned-boxer. Paul took on former heavyweight world champion Joshua in Miami on Friday night.

Joshua, who is reportedly close to agreeing to a long-awaited fight against Tyson Fury in Riyadh in 2026, was made to work far harder than he would have liked to extinguish the challenge of Paul. However, the fight was waved off in the sixth round after a barrage of shots from Joshua.

The American has since undergone surgery after his jaw was broken in two places by the final blow. And Paul's mother, Pam Stepnick, has praised Joshua for apologising to her personally after his victory.

"Even Anthony Joshua had some class and apologised to me, essentially," Stepnick said on the Impaulsive podcast. "He worked his way through the crowd and came up to me and said: 'Mom, just know it's just boxing. It's just the fight game'.

She was less forgiving towards promoter Eddie Hearn, though. "As a mom, my aggression comes out too," she said. "I wanted to get in that ring and punch Eddie Hearn, for instance... because I don't like his smug face.

"Jake's over there struggling and he's sitting over there smiling like the cat who swallowed the canary. Guess what? Did he f***ing get in the ring?

Before she added: "Jake chose to get into the ring with a humongous guy, that's on Jake. I believe that Jake really thought he could knock him (Joshua) out so it made me feel very confident and I knew God was in his corner.

“And he still was, because this could have turned out even worse than it did, so God really was on our shoulders. And to get through the process of getting into the ER, having surgery, out of the ER, discharged to home within 12 hours, thank you to the angels."

While Paul said: “Double broken jaw. Give me Canelo in 10 days. I’m feeling good, that was fun. I love this sport. I gave it my all… I had a blast.

“Anthony’s a great fighter, I got my ass beat but that’s what this sport’s about. I think my jaw is broke by the way… it’s definitely broke. A nice ass whooping from one of the best to ever do it.

“We’re going to heal the broken jaw, fight someone my weight and go for the cruiserweight world title.”

Asked whether his 15-month spell out of the ring since losing to Daniel Dubois had played a part in him initially struggling, Joshua replied: “I need to give this guy a systematic breakdown.

“I said I’m going to take his soul, I said I’m going to see it leaving his body round after round. When the time comes, some people are there to get knocked out. I said it and that’s exactly what happened.

“I just took my time and I got the job done within the time limit of eight rounds. I refuse to get hurt, I refuse to acknowledge getting hurt.

“As soon as he hit me, I stood there and I tried to hit him back. At the end of the day there’s going to be one winner and it’s me tonight.”

Former Barcelona star Rafinha Alcantara has announced his retirement from football at the grand old age of 32.

The Brazilian has posted an emotional message on social media to confirm the news and confirmed he is finally hanging up his boots.

He said in a video message: “After some time away from the pitch and following a long recovery, the time has come to make something important public. I have made the decision to retire. A little over a year ago, I suffered a knee injury which, unfortunately, prevents me from returning to compete at the highest level. It was hard to accept that I couldn’t continue. Thank you to my family for always being there, to everyone for the love and support. Thank you, football, for making me who I am. Goodbye.”

Rafinha started off at Barcelona and spent over a decade at the club before moving on to PSG after a series of loan spells. He went on to play for Real Sociedad and Al-Arabi but has now decided to call it quits.

Barcelona have sent a message to Rafinha after his announcement, posting on XI: “Thank you for your football and for defending these colors with pride and commitment. Good luck in this new stage, Rafinha.”

Thank you and good luck, Rafinha!

AFCON DAY 3: NIGERIA, SENEGAL, TUNISIA WIN BIG; DR CONGO IN VAR CONTROVERSY

Four former champions in Nigeria, Senegal, Tunisia and the Democratic Republic of Congo - all of whom harbour title ambitions this time around - began their Africa Cup of Nations campaigns with victories on Tuesday, although Benin were left ruing a malfunctioning VAR that may have cost them a draw.

In Tangier, Senegal gave an early statement of their title credentials as a Nicolas Jackson double saw them sail past Botswana, the lowest ranked team in the competition, 3-0.

The Bayern Munich man finished smartly in the 40th minute after Ismail Jakobs' cutback and then added a brace with another calm finish beyond Goitseone Phoko before the hour mark. Cherif Ndiaye added a third at the death.

Jackson, Sadio Mane and Iliman Ndiaye could all have broken the deadlock for Senegal earlier during a rampant first half showing by the 2021 champions, with the overworked Phoko requiring to be on hand to make several key stops.

"We could have scored more," reflected Senegal coach Pape Thiaw, "but what stands out is my team's commitment and discipline.

"What I take away from the match is the team's professionalism, they followed instructions and got the job done."

It takes them up to top spot in Group D ahead of their meeting with the Democratic Republic of Congo on Saturday, although the latter also affirmed why they are being considered one of the tournament dark horses with a 1-0 victory over Benin in Rabat.

Theo Bongonda's early goal proved the difference-maker between the two sides, with the Spartak Moscow winger beating Saturnin Allagbe with a calm finish after reacting quickest to a defensive miscalculation by defender Yohan Roche.

However, there was no shortage of controversy in the fixture, with Benin left seething after a handball by DRC skipper Chancel Mbemba was missed in the box, with officials later acknowledging they had not been able to check the incident due to VAR malfunctioning.

It was not entirely clear on replay whether the ball made contact with the veteran defender's shoulder or arm, but while South African referee Abongile Tom jogged over to the pitch side monitor to examine the footage, he was unable to view any images as the VAR system broke down.

The official had earlier used VAR to rule out a header by DR Congo forward Cedric Bakambu following an extended review.

It's an error that leaves Benin with a brooding sense of injustice and they'll be determined to make amends when they face Botswana at Rabat's Olympic Stadium this weekend.

"We witnessed a very good football match that did not deserve to have a loser," Benin head coach Gernot Rohr told journalists. "My team made me proud.

"We now prepare well for the match against Botswana, with the advantage of having our suspended players back."

Over in Group C, Nigeria began their campaign with a 2-1 victory over Tanzania in rainy Fes, although the Super Eagles didn't have things entirely their own way despite dominating the early stages of the contest.

With goalkeeper Zuberi 'Foba' Masudi in inspired form, and Samuel Chukwueze and Victor Osimhen spurning chances aplenty, it fell to Man of the Match Semi Ajayi to break the deadlock when he rose unmarked to head an Alex Iwobi cross into the corner of the Tanzanian net.

Osimhen thought he'd added a second moments after the break, only for VAR to rule him offside by the tightest of margins, and Nigeria were stunned moments later when Kokola M'Mombwa broke the Eagles' offside trap to finish beyond Stanley Nwabali.

Tanzania's hopes of holding onto a draw lasted a mere two minutes: Ademola Lookman swivelled on the edge of their box and lashed home powerfully beyond Masudi to take back the lead, and with it the three points.

"We're happy, and the most important thing at the AFCON is to improve in every game," Nigeria head coach Eric Chelle told ESPN. "So now, after the analysis we'll do tonight or tomorrow, we'll continue to improve.

"We have to improve defensively, of course, put in more movement when we don't have the ball, and when we have it. I congratulate my players, but we have a lot of work."

Next up for the Nigeria are Tunisia, who began their tournament in style by easing past Uganda 3-1 in Rabat.

Ellyes Skhiri opened the scoring for Tunisia after ten minutes amidst some testing weather conditions in the Moroccan capital, before goals from Elias Achouri either side of halftime made sure of victory.

Denis Omedi pulled one back for Uganda in the second minute of stoppage time, although both Uganda and Tanzania will know - ahead of their December 27 meeting in Rabat - that victory in that game week two fixture will likely decide whether their tournament will extend beyond the group stage.

"We showed them too much respect," Uganda head coach Paul Put bemoaned after the match. "This is a bad start. I think we weren't aggressive enough, but you're playing at the AFCON, you need to win your duels.

"We know what we need to do in our next game," he added. "We'll be playing under pressure, a draw will not be enough, but I do believe that we can bounce back."

What's coming up on Day Four?

Cameroon versus Gabon is the standout fixture on Wednesday, with the two Central African neighbours set to meet in Agadir following the earlier Group F clash between reigning champions Ivory Coast and Mozambique in Marrakesh.

Algeria and Sudan meet in Rabat in Group E, while Burkina Faso will take on Equatorial Guinea in Casablanca in the day's early kickoff.

GREMAN CLUB SHARE STATEMENT AS FOOTBALLER KILLED IN SKI-SLOPE CHAIR-LIFT ACCIDENT

Reports have confirmed that the tourist killed in a ski-slope chair-lift accident in Montenegro has been identified as Sebastian Hertner. The German footballer tragically died at the Savin Kuk ski resort

As per the Daily Mail, the 34-year-old was on holiday in the Durmitor mountain range last Saturday with his wife when the double chairlift they were riding became detached from its cable and collided with the seat behind it. Hertner, who is said to have fallen from the list, died at the scene.

His 30-year-old wife, who was riding with him, suffered a broken leg and had to be rescued by emergency services and taken for medical treatment, having been left trapped in the chair. At least three other tourists were also left stranded in their chairs for several hours before rescue teams were able to safely bring them down.

Hertner was a former defender who played professionally in Germany for a number of year, playing for VfB Stuttgart as a youth player, before featuring second division teams such as 1860 Munich, Erzgebirge Aue and Darmstadt in the second division.

As a youngster, he earned caps for Germany at U18 (14 caps) and U19 (5 caps) level, playing alongside future senior internationals, including Felix Kroos (brother of Toni), and World Cup winner Christoph Kramer. In 2024, he joined ETSV Hamburg in the Oberliga, which is Germany's fifth tier, becoming club captain.

Montenegrin authorities ordered the immediate closure of the chairlift following the incident as prosecutors launched an investigation. A full technical inspection of the lift will be carried out, with an official cause yet to be confirmed.

ETSV Hamburg confirmed his death in a statement shared on Instagram, expressing just how saddened and shocked they were after losing their captain. In full, the post read:

"It is with great sadness that we have to announce today that our captain Sebastian Hertner had a fatal accident while on holiday. We are stunned and endlessly saddened.

"Our condolences go out to his family and loved ones. Rest in peace Sebastian."

Stuttgart also shared a statement, which read: "VfB is mourning the loss of its former youth player Sebastian Hertner, who has tragically lost his life at the age of 34 in an accident. For seven years, Sebastian Hertner wore the shirt with the red chest ring and played 65 matches for VfB II in the 3. Liga. Our sympathies go to his family and loved ones."

Reporting reveals that mayor of Zabljak, Rados Zugic, stated that the incident was being treated with the utmost seriousness, stressing that visitor safety was essential in a region that relies heavily on tourism. He said: "We insist on a comprehensive and transparent investigation to determine those responsible."

Even so, Serbian news outlet Blic, via Daily Mail, has reported that the ski lift had resumed operations just the following day.

INDONESIA BOWLER GIDE PRIANDANA SHATTERS CRICKET RECORD

JAKARTA: Indonesian fast bowler Gide Priandana has set a new record in the history of cricket.

Gide Priandana became the first player to take 5 wickets in an over in T20 International cricket.

He achieved this historic feat in the first T20 International against Cambodia.

The 28-year-old right-arm fast bowler bowled brilliantly against Cambodia, destroying the middle and lower order.

He completed a brilliant hat-trick by taking 3 consecutive wickets in the first 3 balls of the over.

After a dot ball, he also dismissed Mong Dara Sok and Pelwank.

In this match, Indonesia scored 167 runs while batting first, and the Cambodian team was bundled out for 107 runs.

Earlier, the feat of taking 5 wickets in an over in domestic men’s T20 cricket has been achieved twice before; however, this honor has been achieved for the first time at the international level by Gide Priyandana.

JAKE PAUL BLENDS £4K 'WORLD MOST EXPENSIVE HOTDOG' AFTER ANTHONY JOSHUA BROKE JAW

The YouTuber, 28, bravely faced former heavyweight champ Anthony Joshua, 36, in a professional boxing bout on Friday night which was broadcast to million across the globe on Netflix

Jake Paul was left worse for wear(Image: AP)

Jake Paul drowned his sorrows by drinking the 'world's most expensive' hotdog after his devastating loss to Anthony Joshua. The YouTuber was forced to blend the snack due to the Brit heavyweight breaking his jaw in two places.

Things are all doom and gloom for Paul as it is estimated he earned around £68million from the Friday night bout. Former heavyweight champ Joshua knocked out the 28-year-old in round six with a vicious right cross to the jaw.

Paul went straight to hospital for surgery to have some teeth removed and two metal plates placed in his skull. Images from a private party in a Miami mansion on Saturday showed Paul holding the hot dog daubed with $6,000 (£4,000) worth of caviar.

The social media star then puts the pricey snack through a blender because of his medical inability to chew. The former Disney actor looks upset as he can't eat the dog before a wave of joy washes over him as he downs the food.

The YouTuber has been active on social media(Image: INSTAGRAM)

Media mogul and artist Victoria Unikel, who was at the party, said: "There were over 100 people at the party and the atmosphere was incredible but Jake was really hurting, wincing and unable to speak too well. His jaw was swollen and he couldn’t even open his mouth much.

“Despite that he was really spooning the caviar on his Dog Haus dog from a tin of Casa Noosh caviar which costs $64,000 (£47,600) and must have spread about $6,000 worth on it.

“It’s got to be the most expensive hot dog ever but he had to put it through a MagicBullet blender because he couldn’t eat solids after his surgery. Jake’s mum Pam Stepnick was there too signing copies of her book F**k the Pauls.

“She’s an amazing lady but a bit of a hooligan too – just look at that book title.”

Despite his injuries compounding the sting of defeat, the American pugilist has remained exceptionally busy on social platforms afterwards, with his latest Instagram upload showcasing his fight earnings through bundles of $100 notes scattered across a private jet's floor - whilst brandishing multiple firearms in the same snap.

"The American Dream [US flag emoji]. Start yours today. Believe in it. Fail. Work. Fail. Learn. Fail. Don't ever stop," Paul captioned the post, pictured clutching a gold-plated revolver whilst puffing on a cigar.

WEST HAM NAME EX-JUVENTUS BOSS AS NEW HEAD COACH AFTER REHANNE SKINNER SACKED

New Hammers boss tasked with dodging relegation from WSL

West Ham women have appointed Rita Guarino as head coach after Rehanne Skinner was sacked.

Skinner was relieved of her duties last week with the Hammers sitting second-bottom in the WSL, having taken just five points from 11 league matches.

Guarino, a four-time Serie A Femminile champion with Juventus, will be tasked with keeping relegation-threatened West Ham in the top flight this season. It will be her first job outside of her home country, Italy.

"I’m so happy to be joining West Ham United”, said the 54-year-old after signing.

“It is a club with a big history and strong values that align with my own.

"I’ve spoken with the Board and I’m really excited by the project here. There is a lot of talent and experience in the team, and I want to support the girls to develop as individuals but also as a collective.”

She continued, explaining her plan for the side: "I want to build a team that is organised, aggressive with the ball and that tries to recognise and use space. The mentality of the team - the togetherness and hard work - is the most important thing.

"I’m proud to be here and I’m looking forward to the chapter ahead in the best league in the world."

Guarino was something of a journeywoman during her 21-year playing career, representing Juventus, Torino and Lazio and spending a brief stint in the United States.

A prolific striker, she also racked up 35 goals in 99 caps for Italy, whose Under-17 side she later managed.

She has been out of work since the end of the 2023-24 season, when her Inter Milan contract was mutually terminated following a disappointing campaign.
