EBOLA CONCERNS FORCE FIBA TO MOVE U18 AFROBASKET FROM UGANDA 🇺🇬

Uganda’s aspirations of hosting the 2026 FIBA U18 AfroBasket Zone V Qualifiers have suffered a devastating blow after FIBA Africa stripped the country of its hosting rights, citing public health anxieties over the ongoing Ebola concern.
The regional youth tournament, originally slated to showcase Uganda’s newly minted Hoima City Arena, has been abruptly relocated to Egypt and will now run from June 10 to 15, 2026.
In a statement confirming the relocation, FIBA Africa emphasised that the safety and well-being of young athletes, technical officials and travelling delegations remained the governing body’s top priority.
The decision follows a surge in regional health concerns linked to the Ebola strain.
While the outbreak originated in the neighbouring Democratic Republic of Congo, recent confirmed cases and exposures within Uganda prompted local health authorities to implement strict surveillance and containment protocols.
Faced with an unpredictable health landscape, continental basketball officials opted to move the tournament to safer ground.
The Federation of Uganda Basketball Associations (FUBA) confirmed the development on Sunday, expressing profound disappointment while acknowledging the necessity of the decision.
The news is a bitter pill to swallow for local sports sub-sectors. The newly constructed Hoima City Arena was expected to make its international debut with this tournament, a milestone intended to market Hoima as a premier regional sporting destination.
The event was set to draw top youth talent from across East Africa, including Kenya, Rwanda, Tanzania, Burundi, and South Sudan.
Beyond the logistical and economic disappointment, the decision robs Uganda of a critical competitive edge.
In 2024, the Junior Silverbacks and Junior Gazelles capitalised on passionate home support to sweep both the boys’ and girls’ Zone V titles.
Now, Uganda’s reigning champions must defend their regional supremacy on foreign soil.
Despite the setback, FUBA officials maintained a resilient outlook, thanking fans, corporate partners, and stakeholders for their understanding.
The federation pledged its unyielding support to the youth squads as they pivot from hosts to international travelers.
With the qualifiers just days away, the focus shifts entirely to Cairo. FUBA is expected to release the final travel itineraries and logistical arrangements for the Ugandan contingent in the coming days as the teams prepare to fight for a coveted spot in the continental AfroBasket finals.

SHE CRANES CLINCH CELTIC CUP WITH PERFECT RUN
The She Cranes have clinched the Celtic Cup with a perfect run, winning all five games.
Uganda secured a well-deserved 70-48 victory against Wales in the Celtic Cup encounter at Glasgow’s Emirates Arena on Sunday.
The tournament was played in a round-robin format, and the champion was determined by the country that collected the most wins and goals.
Uganda fought back from an early scare to open a two-goal lead (17-15) at the end of the opening period.
The She Cranes greatly improved in the second period, making several pass interceptions and thus limiting Wales’ offensive flow. Uganda took a 12-goal lead into the halftime break.
Coming out of the halftime break, Uganda kept their foot on the gas pedal, extending their lead to 15 goals (54-39).
The She Cranes hit top gear in the final period as they sealed a 22-goal victory.
The defensive partnership of Aya Gloria and Faridah Kadondi was crucial, making the attackers’ lives hard, while the middle court players pulled the strings to dictate play.
At full-time, Mary Nuba was named Player of the Match, and Shadia Nassanga was named Player of the Tournament.

OLYMPIC MARATHON RUNNER WHO WAS SET ON FIRE DIES IN HOSPITAL AFTER BEING VICTOM OF PETROL ATTACK
- Cheptegei, 33, suffered burns to 80 per cent of her body in the brutal attack
- Her organs failed last night and doctors were unable to save her, officials said
Ugandan Olympic marathon runner Rebecca Cheptegei has succumbed to horrendous injuries sustained after she was doused in petrol and set alight in her home.
Cheptegei, 33, suffered burns to 80 per cent of her body in Sunday's brutal attack that was allegedly carried out by her ex-boyfriend, according to medical officials.
She was rushed to the intensive care unit at the Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital in Eldoret, Kenya, in the hopes doctors could stabilise her.
But the facility's acting director Dr Owen Menach this morning confirmed Cheptegei died late last night.
'Unfortunately, we lost her after all her organs failed,' Menach told Kenyan press.
The president of the Uganda Olympic Committee (UOC) Donald Rukare said in a post on X today: 'We have learnt of the sad passing on of our Olympic athlete Rebecca Cheptegei... following a vicious attack by her boyfriend.
'This was a cowardly and senseless act that has led to the loss of a great athlete. Her legacy will continue to endure,' he added.
A press release from the UOC bearing Rukare's signature later urged law enforcement agencies 'to take swift and decisive action to bring the perpetrator to justice'.
The horrific incident took place just weeks after Cheptegei had taken part in the marathon at the Paris Olympics, where she placed 44th.
Kenyan police confirmed the runner was attacked at her house in western Trans Nzoia County, close to the Ugandan border, where she had recently relocated to be closer to superior Kenyan training facilities.
Trans Nzoia County Police Commander Jeremiah ole Kosiom said her former partner Dickson Ndiema had bought a can of petrol, poured it on her and set her ablaze during a disagreement on Sunday.
Police discovered a five-litre jerry can, a bag, and a burned phone at the scene of the incident, according to Kenyan newspaper The Nation.
Rebecca's father Joseph Cheptegei, speaking earlier this week from hospital alongside his other daughter Evalyne Chelagat, claimed that the two were fighting over her land at Endebes in Trans Nzoia shortly before the alleged attack occurred.
'They were just friends and I wonder why he wanted to take away things belonging to my daughter,' Cheptegei Snr told The Star, revealing also that his daughter's two children are fathered by a different man living in Uganda.
He went on to claim that Cheptegei and Ndiema — who he alleges have been separated for a long time — are involved in a case being investigated by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) in Kenya.
According to Cheptegei Snr and Police Commander Kosiom, the ex-boyfriend sneaked into his daughter's home to stage the attack.
'The boyfriend is believed to have sneaked into the compound at around 2pm on Sunday while the wife and the children were in Church,' Kosiom said, as per the Kenyan newspaper The Standard.
'Upon returning, Dickson, who had procured petrol, began pouring it on Rebecca before he set her ablaze.
'The couple were heard quarrelling outside their house. During the altercation, the boyfriend was seen pouring a liquid on the woman before burning her.
'The suspect was also caught by the fire and sustained serious burns.'
According to Menach, the alleged ex-boyfriend attacker has also been admitted to the same hospital with 30 per cent burns.

Meanwhile, Kenyan media reported that one of Cheptegei's daughters witnessed the assault at her mother's home.
'He kicked me while I tried to run to the rescue of my mother,' Kenya's The Standard reported her as saying.
'I immediately cried out for help, attracting a neighbour who tried to extinguish the flames with water, but it was not possible,' said the girl, who has not been named.
The Uganda Athletics Federation also reported Cheptegei's death and paid tribute to their athlete in a statement on X.
'We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of our athlete, Rebecca Cheptegei early this morning who tragically fell victim to domestic violence,' it said.
'As a federation, we condemn such acts and call for justice. May her soul rest in peace.'
The fatal assault on Cheptegei comes two years after Kenyan-born athlete Damaris Mutua was found dead in Iten, a world-famous running hub in the Rift Valley.
And in 2021, record-breaking Kenyan runner Agnes Tirop, 25, was found stabbed to death at her home in Iten in October 2021.
The promising young runner, who had won 10,000m bronze medals in two consecutive World Championships and came fourth in the 5000m at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, was found dead at her home in near Eldoret on October 13, 2021 in a pool of her own blood.
A coroner ruled she had died as a result of the massive blood loss from a series of savage stab wounds to her neck and abdomen.
The horrific discovery prompted authorities to launch a manhunt for her husband, Ibrahim Rotich.
He was detained hours later after a breathless late-night chase which only ended when the fleeing Rotich slammed his vehicle into a lorry as he sought to escape several police cars bearing down on him.
Rotich is now on trial for the murder of his wife Tirop - a charge he denies.
The trial only got underway in November last year, more than two years after Tirop's death, following a court's decision to release Rotich on bail following a lengthy period of detention.
Everlyne Jepngetich, Tirop's younger sister, told the court late last year the deceased had suffered significant abuse at the hands of her husband and said she came home hours before the murder to find her sister had been badly beaten.
Latest figures from the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics published in January 2023 found that 34 per cent of women in the country had experienced physical violence since the age of 15.

ARUSHA STADIUM NAMED AFTER SAMIA SULUHU TO HOST AFCON 2027 MATCHES
The Tanzanian government has affirmed that the Arusha Stadium will be completed in time for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) football games, which will be co-hosted by Tanzania, Kenya, and Uganda.
This was revealed recently by the Tanzania Minister of Culture, Arts, and Sports, Damas Ndumbaro, in an interview with The Citizen.
Ndumbaro stated that the initial phase of the stadium’s construction has reached five percent, which includes site preparation, procurement, and the construction of contractor offices.
He expressed satisfaction with the speed and capability of the contractor carrying out the work and believes they will meet the target.
“The pace of progress is impressive, and we are confident that the contractor will meet the deadline, allowing Tanzania to make history with this achievement,” stated Ndumbaro.
The stadium is being built in the Olomoti area, and the government will spend not less than Tsh286 billion (Sh13.5bn).
The stadium, which will be named after President Samia Suluhu Hassan, will also include accommodation facilities.
Tanzania, Kenya, and Uganda will jointly host the 36th edition of the biennial African football tournament organized by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) in June and July 2027, while Morocco will host the 2025 edition.
“We believe the contractor, who was selected after a rigorous process, will meet our expectations,” he added, noting that the stadium is expected to be completed in 22 months.
“We need a quality stadium that will be built on time and meet the expectations of Tanzanians. We want a modern stadium,” Ndumbaro emphasized.
Tanzania plans to host AFCON matches at the Benjamin William Mkapa Stadium in Dar es Salaam, the Amaan Complex in Zanzibar, and the planned Arusha Stadium.
The new Arusha-based stadium will have a capacity of 30,000 seats and will be the most modern in East Africa.
In addition to domestic and international matches, the stadium will also host various activities, such as athletics and trade events, and will significantly boost tourism in the country.
The stadium will be built by the China Railway Construction Engineering Group Limited (CRCEG), whose officials have promised to build a modern facility.
The Kenya-Uganda-Tanzania bid received the nod from the CAF executive committee last year, bringing the biennial tournament back to East Africa for the first time since Ethiopia hosted the 1976 finals
