NBA, FIBA REMAIN 'COMMITTED' TO NBA EUROPE AFTER EUROLEAGUE REJECTS PROPOSAL

Basketball bodies reaffirm plans for new European competition while leaving door open to partnership with EuroLeague

The NBA and the International Basketball Federation (FIBA) reaffirmed their commitment Thursday to launching a new professional men's basketball league in Europe despite EuroLeague clubs rejecting a proposal to join forces.

The two organizations said in a statement that a partnership with EuroLeague would help unify European basketball and benefit clubs, players and fans.

"A partnership between the EuroLeague, FIBA and the NBA to unify the European basketball ecosystem would unlock the game's enormous potential across Europe for the benefit of clubs, players and, most importantly, fans," it said. "The NBA and FIBA remain committed to moving forward with a new professional men's league in Europe and helping build a stronger, more sustainable basketball ecosystem alongside partners who share our vision of growth, opportunity and the core principles of the European sports model."

EuroLeague's 13 shareholder clubs rejected the NBA's proposal to combine competition with the planned NBA Europe project during a meeting Tuesday in Italy.

The clubs, however, left the door open to further negotiations on a revised proposal.

Barcelona confirmed Wednesday that the offer had been rejected, adding that EuroLeague clubs would reconsider it if the NBA amended its terms.

The NBA and FIBA have been developing plans for a new European competition featuring 16 teams, including 12 permanent franchises and four places available through sporting qualification.

The project has been targeting a launch in 2027, although the final structure and timetable remain under discussion.

EuroLeague, meanwhile, currently featuring 20 teams, is pursuing its expansion plans, including a possible increase to 24 clubs.

MIKEL ARTETA'S BIZARRE MANAGEMENT TECHNIQUES STARTED ON DAY ONE AT ARSENAL: BOSS REVEALS HOW HE DESTROYED AN OFFICE - AND ORDERED STAFF TO PUT IT BACK AGAIN IN TWO MINUTES

Mikel Arteta has long been known for his unusual ways of testing the Arsenal squad.

From hiring a pickpocket to steal his own player's wallets to directing travel disruption during pre-season, the Arsenal boss turns heads with regularity with his training-ground methods that are designed to keep the champions one step ahead of the pursuing pack.

Arteta was famed for his use of speakers in training (not just blasting You'll Never Walk Alone before a 4-0 defeat at Anfield in 2021) and has even brought in a team dog named Win.

Now, in the wake of agreeing new terms with the Gunners that have made him the Premier League's highest-paid boss, Arteta has revealed that his quirky practices began on his very first day on the job back in December 2019.

The then 37-year-old claimed he 'destroyed' an education centre at Arsenal's training centre, throwing 'the computers, the laptops, the cables' on the floor. He then requested his staff to reorganise the office in no time at all in order to prove their togetherness.

In an interview with The Athletic, Arteta explained: 'I said, "Listen, this is what I heard. I don’t know if it’s true. But from a lot of different people, the sentiment is that this is how they feel about working in the organisation. I’m here to help you enjoy your profession and your life and the passion that we all share. If you want me to help you to do that, you have two minutes to put this in order and at least to be ready to work together’. And I left.

Mikel Arteta has agreed terms on a lucrative new deal that keeps him at Arsenal until 2030

'That could have been my managerial career because if that would have stayed the same way, I had no job anymore!'

Arteta then outlined how he came back moments later and everything was 'immaculate'.

'Everyone was silent and had their eyes open and they were ready to listen. I said, "This is just the start. It’s something that we have to be in daily. Whatever we want to accomplish, we’re going to have to do it together. I cannot do it by myself. The issue that we have is much deeper than that, but the opportunity is infinite".

While peculiar, these methods are a core reason why Arteta has been able to propel Arsenal back to the top of English football.

Arteta has admitted that his first bizarre mangerial method was put into action on his first day in the job back in 2019

The 44-year-old wanted to inspire all of his players and staff to become one unit, an us-against-the-world mentality. He believed that by being all together as one, 'we can create a monster’, and that is what he has managed to do during his seven years at the helm.

'What I decided the day I accepted this incredible opportunity was I’m going to give my life, my soul, all my knowledge, and my best ability to deliver a dream - to connect this football club from top to bottom.

'Then I made a commitment with myself. I need to enjoy the journey and I’m going to the journey. Because I didn’t know how tough it was going to be, I had no experience, I never did it before. I have to be so alert, so curious, and just go day by day.'

After taking the club from tenth position in 2019 to Premier League champions, as well as reaching the Champions League final, Arteta has been rewarded with a lucrative new deal which boosts his salary – which was worth up to £15million with bonuses.

Arteta is famous for his unusual training methods and once blasted 'You'll Never Walk Alone' at his players in training ahead of their trip to Liverpool back in 2021

Arteta's new contract is understood to be worth around £20m per year and makes him the league's best-paid manager. Unai Emery, Andoni Iraola, Enzo Maresca and Roberto De Zerbi are all thought to earn in the £10-12m bracket annually, with Oliver Glasner not far behind.

The Spaniard's contract was due to expire next summer, but this new agreement shuts down any speculation over his future, running until 2030.

Arteta said: 'It's a privilege to commit my future to the club and to continue to work with exceptional people who want the best for Arsenal. This club is unique, its character and the way it makes you feel, and I have a great sense of privilege that our journey together will continue.

'We have already built a special bond and created memories that will last a lifetime, and what is so exciting is that this is only the beginning of what we can achieve together.

'I'm extremely grateful to Stan and Josh (Kroenke) for their trust and support, and feel honoured to be leading this club through such a special period in its 140-year history.

'This is such a proud moment for me and my family. I feel the love and respect from our fantastic supporters, and they have mine – and ours – in return.'

BOTTAS ARRIVES IN SINGAPORE AFTER 260-MILES RIDE

Valterri Bottas is closely involved with FNLD GRVL, a cycling race held each summer in his native Finland.
Instagram

Cadillac driver Valtteri Bottas says he was chased by a dog, saw snakes and leapt over a lizard as he cycled from Malaysia to Singapore for this weekend's Grand Prix.

The Finnish driver arrived in Singapore on Wednesday after choosing a 260-mile (419km) bike ride over a flight from last weekend's Formula 1 race in Sepang, outside the Malaysian capital of Kuala Lumpur.

The 37-year-old began his journey just hours after spinning out of Sunday's chaotic Grand Prix, taking a trip that involved off-road and gravel trails as well as cycling at night.

"I saw some snakes, which I was a little bit worried about, but actually they were pretty chill. They were just doing their thing," said Bottas.

"I saw one cobra, one python just crossing the path in front of me. I saw some of those big lizards that you also see here, one was on the path.

"I had to jump over it on a bike because I saw it last minute. I got chased by one dog, I got stuck behind a group of cows on one small track."

Bottas is an accomplished cyclist and earned a spot at the Gravel World Championships after finishing fifth in his age group at a qualifying event in the Czech Republic during Formula 1's summer hiatus.

Unfortunately for Bottas the World Championships take place this weekend as well, so he will be competing on four wheels instead of two.

When the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix was cancelled in 2023, Bottas decided to use the time to compete in a gravel race in Scotland.

Bottas has endured a difficult return to Formula 1 with new team Cadillac this season. He is 22nd in the drivers' standings, is yet to score a point after 16 Grands Prix and has failed to finish eight races.

"The wildest part was the riding at night in the jungle. The noise in there, your mind starts to play games," added Bottas.

"'What is out there? Who knows what is out there?' But then you just need to crack on and keep going."

FIA ANNOUNCES F1 SOFTWARE CHANGES AFTER SEPANG CHAOS

The FIA has confirmed further software changes following its investigation into the chaotic start to last weekend’s Bahrain Grand Prix in Malaysia.

The FIA will introduce further software changes to prevent similar issues in wet weather that happened in Sepang. Image: XPB Images

The governing body will reuse the emergency settings introduced at Sepang if similar wet weather is forecast for this weekend’s Singapore Grand Prix, before issuing another software update for the United States Grand Prix on October 25.

The decision follows the extraordinary scenes before Sunday’s race, when several cars experienced major power delivery problems while circulating behind the Safety Car.

Already delayed by 40 minutes because of heavy rain, the start procedure was abandoned after drivers struggled to accelerate from low speeds, with some coming to a complete stop on the circuit.

The FIA has now completed its investigation, identifying the circumstances that caused the software failure and left several drivers unable to accelerate normally.

“The review concluded that some cars running on low engine RPM in certain circuit sectors where a 250kW power reduction was applied experienced a loss of power beyond the original intent and that could not be recovered in those sectors,” the FIA said.

With turbocharger speeds falling as the cars slowed, the affected engines were producing less power, while restrictions on electrical deployment prevented the electric motors from compensating for the shortfall.

The investigation also examined how wet-weather energy restrictions could be managed differently in future, alongside data supplied by teams and power unit manufacturers.

The FIA said its engineers had identified the problem and issued revised software settings within five minutes of the start procedure being halted.

Further technical guidance followed 13 minutes later, with every team and power unit manufacturer completing the changes within half an hour of the initial release.

The changes lifted the relevant energy restrictions at Sepang and resolved the problem ahead of the eventual race start.

The FIA also addressed suggestions that the original software had been deployed without testing.

Although single-seater director Nikolas Tombazis acknowledged after the race that the particular conditions encountered at Sepang had not been replicated beforehand, the governing body said the system had been assessed before the event.

Teams and power unit manufacturers had undertaken simulations, with the software also used during the opening practice sessions at the Belgian and Dutch Grands Prix.

Neither session revealed the problem, which only emerged when the field travelled at exceptionally low speeds during the disrupted formation laps in Malaysia.

The review has now prompted a wider examination of how such software can be tested more effectively, particularly given the limited opportunities to recreate the conditions in which it must operate.

“The FIA, together with the teams and Power Unit Manufacturers (PUMs), will continue to strengthen Power Unit software testing and verification capabilities, enhancing the overall validation process through independent assessment and collaborative feedback, including input from the supplier of the standardised Electronics Control Unit (ECU),” it said.

The weather forecast for Singapore has a possibility of rain on Sunday for the race, with clear conditions expected across the other two days.

FORMER TOTTENHAM DEFENDER RAMON VEGA ANNOUNCES BID FOR FIFA PRESIDENCY

Former Switzerland international becomes first to announce intention to challenge Gianni Infantino in 2027 election

Former Tottenham Hotspur and Switzerland defender Ramon Vega announced Wednesday his intention to challenge FIFA President Gianni Infantino, who is seeking reelection next year.

"I am standing to reunite the global football family, deliver genuine and lasting reform, modernise FIFA for the 21st Century, restore stability and credibility, and rebuild the trust that our game urgently needs," Vega said in a statement.

"Football does not belong to presidents, confederations or administrators. Football is greater than any position, any individual or any institution," said the 55-year-old.

"It is the people's game and belongs to everyone: the players, coaches, referees, supporters, volunteers, clubs, leagues, associations and communities that give football its life."

Vega accused FIFA's leadership of damaging trust in the governing body and demanded changes to its governance.

"The current leadership has demoralised the game. Weak governance has damaged FIFA's credibility and eroded trust across the global football family," he said. "Football is in the emergency room, on life support. We cannot wait any longer. FIFA needs a new direction and fundamental reform."

Infantino has faced demands to step down following the collapse of a controversial plan involving the sale of a stake in commercial and ticketing rights to FIFA competitions to private investors.

Vega considered running for the FIFA presidency in 2015, telling the BBC at the time that he was weighing a candidacy.

Four years later, he announced plans to challenge Infantino but failed to secure the backing of five FIFA member associations required to appear on the ballot.

Candidates seeking to challenge Infantino in the 2027 election have until Nov. 18 to declare their intention to stand.

Vega earned 23 caps for Switzerland and played for clubs including Tottenham, Celtic and Watford before retiring in 2004. He later pursued a career in finance.

'THIS IS ONLY THE BEGINNING,' VOWS MIXED ARTETA AFTER SIGNING £80M-PLUS ARSENAL DEAL

Four-year contract secures Spaniard’s future and makes him the Premier League’s best paid manager

Mikel Arteta has promised “this is only the beginning” of what he can achieve as Arsenal manager after signing a new long-term contract that would take his reign at the club beyond a decade if he sees it out.

The Spaniard is understood to have signed a four-year deal worth more £20m (€24m) a season, making him the best-paid Premier League manager. That is a hefty pay rise in recognition of his success last season as Arsenal ended their 22-year wait to be crowned champions after three successive runners-up finishes.

Arteta, who took over from Unai Emery in December 2019, is the Premier League’s longest-serving manager after the departure of Pep Guardiola from Manchester City. After losing the Champions League final last season to Paris Saint-Germain in a penalty shootout, the 44-year-old is targeting more success as he seeks to build a winning dynasty at Arsenal, where he previously served as captain under Arsène Wenger.

“It’s a privilege to commit my future to the club and to continue to work with exceptional people who want the best for Arsenal,” said Arteta. “This club is unique, its character and the way it makes you feel, and I have a great sense of privilege that our journey together will continue. We have already built a special bond and created memories that will last a lifetime, and what is so exciting is that this is only the beginning of what we can achieve together.

“This is such a proud moment for me and my family. I feel the love and respect from our fantastic supporters, and they have mine – and ours – in return.”

Arteta’s previous contract, which was due to expire at the end of this season, was believed to be worth about £10m a season plus a £5m bonus for reaching the Champions League. The new deal, to June 2030, cements his status as one of the best-paid managers in the world. His coaching staff have also signed extended deals.

“It has been an incredible journey so far and we are excited for what lies ahead in this special relationship,” said Arsenal’s co-chairs, Stan and Josh Kroenke. “Last season was an incredible moment in Arsenal’s history, a moment in which we created memories that will last a lifetime. We’re determined to create many more in the years ahead.

“We share a special bond with Mikel. We are so proud of everything we have achieved since he returned to the club in 2019. He has a deep understanding of Arsenal’s values and carries them in his heart. He knows what this club means to everyone connected to it and is committed to building on everything we have achieved together.”

Arsenal confirmed this week that they have shelved plans for a major expansion of the Emirates Stadium after Arteta is believed to have expressed concern over the disruption that would have been caused by any temporary move. His side face Leeds on Saturday as they attempt to bounce back from a surprise 3-0 defeat at Brighton before the international break that ended the champions’ 100 per cent start to the new campaign.

CHRISTIAN HORNER FINALLY REVEALS REASON FOR RED BULL SACKING

Christian Horner has finally revealed the reason given by Red Bull for his sacking.

Christian Horner. (Image: David Davies / PA Wire)

The former Formula 1 team principal was removed from his role following the British Grand Prix in 2025, bringing his two-decade spell in charge of the team to an end.

Mr Horner had served as Red Bull’s team principal since the energy drinks company took over Jaguar’s Formula 1 operation at the end of 2004.

During his time at the helm, the team secured eight drivers’ world championships and six constructors’ titles, with Sebastian Vettel and Max Verstappen among those to enjoy success under his leadership.

Mr Horner, who lives on the Oxfordshire border near Banbury, has now claimed he was initially told that the team’s performance had declined before receiving a more detailed explanation after pushing for answers.

Speaking to The Times, he said: “I was never given a clear explanation other than that they felt [the team’s] performance had slipped a little.

“Even though at the [previous] race we’d been on pole position and leading the British Grand Prix; had it not been for the weather, we’d probably have won it. And that they wanted to go in a different direction.

“When I really pushed — I had six years left on my contract — I was told that it was more Christian Horner Racing than Red Bull Racing.”

Mr Horner was replaced as team principal by Laurent Mekies following his departure.

His exit came after he had faced an allegation of misconduct involving a female employee in 2024, which he denied.

Red Bull dismissed the complaint against Mr Horner following an internal investigation, while an appeal against that decision was also dismissed.

GPFans reports that Mr Horner was paid £80 million to leave Red Bull, with the former team boss saying the size of the reported settlement showed he had not committed any wrongdoing.

He added: “It also demonstrates that you’ve done nothing wrong. They just don’t want you any more. If somebody’s prepared to pay that much money for you not to be there …

“And I think if you look at that team 12 months down the line, it’s lost its mojo, its presence, its vibe.”

At the time of the interview, Red Bull had reportedly gone 15 races without a victory, its longest winless run since Mr Verstappen joined the team in 2016.

That sequence subsequently ended when the four-time world champion claimed victory at the Bahrain Grand Prix, which was held in Malaysia.

MANCHESTER UNITED DEFENDER LISANDRO MARTINEZ WAS ON THE FIELD AS LIONEL MESSI CPOSED THE BOOK ON HIS ARGENTINA CAREER

The former Barcelona man announced his international retirement in August, and this friendly against Benin was set up to mark the departure of La Albiceleste's record appearance maker, and the man who helped deliver the FIFA World Cup in 2022.

As the two sides walked onto the pitch, they were met by a fireworks display and a huge Argentina shirt with Messi's no.10 on it.

Staying on that theme, the game was halted in the 10th minute for more fireworks and a standing ovation for the eight-time Ballon d'Or winner.

The game was a routine 3-0 win for Lionel Scaloni's side and Messi was involved in all three goals, providing assists for Nicolas Otamendi and Nico Paz before converting a penalty for a strike of his own.

Licha was a second-half substitute, replacing former Manchester City man Otamendi shortly after he netted the opener.

"I told Leo Messi that I love him with all my heart," Martinez told broadcaster TyC Sports after the game.

Our defender was on the pitch 30 times with Messi in total, the pair combining for one of the 38-year-old's 126 Argentina goals. Only former Red Cristiano Ronaldo has scored more at international level with 146.

The friendly also drew the curtain on our involvement in the extended three-week international break, with focus now shifting firmly back to domestic action.

First up for the Reds is the visit of Tottenham Hotspur to Old Trafford this Saturday (10 October) for a 17:30 BST kick-off.

BREAKING: F1 TO RETURN TO AFRICA FOR BRAND NEW GRAND PRIX

Formula 1’s return to Africa will become a reality as an important decision has been made, RacingNews365 has learned.

XPBimages

Formula 1 is to return to racing in Africa, RacingNews365 has learned from multiple sources.

It is understood from well-placed sources in the paddock that Rwanda will be granted the opportunity to host a grand prix, with the race set to join the calendar in 2030.

According to our information, an agreement has been reached, and an official announcement could come later on this year - potentially in the coming weeks.

Rwandan President Paul Kagame has made significant efforts in recent years to secure an opportunity for his country to join the top tier of motorsport.

At Kagame’s initiative, the Rwandan capital Kigali hosted the FIA General Assemblies and Prize Giving Ceremony in 2024. Following months of speculation, Kagame used the event to announce that his country would bid to host a Formula 1 race.

As Rwanda currently has no circuit capable of hosting such an event, Kagame’s announcement was met with some scepticism within the F1 community. Nevertheless, the plans did not disappear. The president attended the 2025 Azerbaijan Grand Prix and has maintained close contact with both FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem and F1 President and CEO Stefano Domenicali.

According to information obtained by RacingNews365, it has now been decided that Rwanda will build a permanent racing circuit, based on the plans that were previously leaked.

The complex will be constructed approximately 40 kilometres from Kigali, near Bugesera International Airport, based on designs by WurzDesign.

The company belongs to former F1 driver and circuit designer Alexander Wurz and is currently working - together with Tilke Engineering - on the Qiddiya Speed Park circuit in Saudi Arabia.

F1’s return to Africa has been a longstanding topic of discussion within the series, which last raced on the continent at the 1993 South African GP at Kyalami.

Several attempts have been made in recent years to bring F1 back to Africa.

In South Africa, the former host venue Kyalami, as well as Cape Town, have sought the opportunity to host a race, while there have also been rumours about the intention of Morocco and Nigeria.Although there is no shortage of interest in hosting grands prix around the world, prominent figures within the sport have long agreed that the African continent should return to the F1 calendar.

Among the drivers, seven-time champion Lewis Hamilton has been one of the most vocal advocates for the initiative, which has also regularly received support from ben Sulayem and Domenicali.
