OHIO STATE’S ATHLETIC DEPARTMENT SPENT NEARLY $38 MILLION MORE THAN IT MADE DURING 2024 FISCAL YEAR
Ohio State’s athletic department spent nearly $38 million more than it made during the 2024 fiscal year.
Ohio State brought in $254,933,664 in athletics revenue during FY24, which ran from July 1, 2023 to June 30, 2024, but had athletics expenses of $292,670,315 during the year, per Ohio State’s official financial report to the NCAA which was released to the public on Monday.
Ohio State’s athletics revenue dropped by nearly $25 million from FY23, which is partially attributable to Ohio State playing only six home football games during the 2023 season after playing eight home games in 2022. The 2024 fiscal year does not include revenues for Ohio State’s 2024 football season, in which the Buckeyes hosted eight regular-season home games as well as a first-round College Football Playoff game.
Ohio State’s expenses also included $9,205,112 in severance payments and benefits to past coaching and administrative personnel, expenses that were increased due to Ohio State’s firing of former men’s basketball coach Chris Holtmann last February.
Per a news release by Ohio State, “the athletics department’s past earnings, reserve funds and anticipated future earnings are projected to cover the $37,736,651 shortfall that was expected in FY 2024.” Revenue increases are expected in the 2025 fiscal year from Ohio State hosting more home football games and the Buckeyes’ College Football Playoff run as well as the Big Ten’s media rights contract.
“In this new era of rapid transformation in intercollegiate athletics, our commitment to our student-athletes is unwavering,” athletic director Ross Bjork, who officially became athletic director in July following Gene Smith’s retirement, said in a statement. “We remain dedicated to supporting them in the classroom, in the training room and on the field of play as they compete for and win national, conference and individual event championships. While last year’s budget impact is not ideal and there were unique circumstances at play, we have a robust expense and revenue plan that has been implemented and have made great progress in this ever-changing landscape of college athletics. We will make sure we operate with a balanced budget moving forward.”
Ohio State’s football ($111,646,810 in revenue vs. $78,586,384 in expenses) and men’s basketball ($24,764,064 in revenue vs. $22,957,649 in expenses) were the only OSU sports teams to generate a profit during the 2024 fiscal year. Despite that, Bjork and president Ted Carter have repeatedly committed to keeping all 36 of Ohio State’s varsity sports.
Following the Ohio State football team’s national championship celebration on Sunday, Bjork said the Buckeyes expect to have a $300 million budget next year as Ohio State prepares to take on the additional expenses of sharing revenues with athletes. But he’s confident the athletic department has the proper structure in place to remain self-sufficient with those expenses.
“You've got to have resources. You've got to have fans. You've got to have alignment.
You've got to have character and culture and chemistry within your building. You've got to have the right coach, the right pieces around it. Everybody has to be on the same page,” Bjork said while talking about the Ohio State football team’s success. “Yeah, we have a big budget. We have a $300 million athletic department budget next year. I think the first time anybody's achieved that. But again, the structure pieces and the culture pieces have to be in place. Otherwise, those things don't work.”

EAGLES, CHIEFS SUPER BOWL FAVOURITES; SPORTS BOOKS SMILING AFTER LION'S LOSS

Sportsbooks took a partial victory lap following the elimination of the Detroit Lions, Super Bowl favorites entering the divisional playoff with the highest handle and ticket percentage for most major operators in that futures market.
The Lions were bounced from the NFC field by the Washington Commanders, who were a 10-point underdog by kickoff on Saturday night. Money shifted to Washington as the number grew ahead of the game and it paid off in a 45-31 win. The Commanders had a moneyline of anywhere between +376 to +430 and wound up in their first NFC Championship game since 1991.
"The Lions losing was a great result for the futures market at BetMGM. On top of knocking our biggest liability out of the running, the Commanders win also ruined the popular chalk money line parlay of Lions, Chiefs, and Ohio State," Christian Cipollini, BetMGM trading manager, said Monday.
After wins at Tampa Bay and Detroit, the Commanders are ticketed for a third road game this weekend and their third matchup this season with NFC East division rival Philadelphia. The Eagles and Commanders split two entertaining games in the regular season.
FanDuel lists the Eagles as 5.5-point favorites Monday and the Commanders are fourth of the remaining four teams in the Super Bowl futures odds market. Kansas City is a 1.5-point favorite over the Buffalo Bills in the AFC Championship at ESPN Bet and Fan Duel.
BetMGM moved the Eagles from +400 to win the Super Bowl last week to current +180 odds, overtaking the Lions as the favorite.
The Chiefs went from +350 last week to +240, narrowly ahead of the Bills. Buffalo went from +400 to +250 and the Commanders moved from +3000 at kickoff of the Lions' game to +700 at BetMGM. FanDuel lists Washington at +750, the Eagles as the favorite at +180 and Kansas City (+220) ahead of the Bills (+250).
The most popular exact result Super Bowl matchup on the board at FanDuel and Draft Kings is the Chiefs beating the Eagles (+380), just ahead of the Eagles beating the Chiefs (+410).
Like Washington to keep it rolling? Consider the Commanders to beat the Chiefs (+1300) or Bills (+1600) at Fan Duel.
Washington rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels is +700 in the Super Bowl MVP futures market, fifth behind Eagles running back Saquon Barkley (+550) and quarterback Jalen Hurts (+400) and co-favorites Bills quarterback Josh Allen and Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes (+280) at Draft Kings.

Will Howard and the Ohio State Buckeyes jumped all over the Oregon Ducks on Wednesday at the Rose Bowl's College Football Playoffs quarterfinals game, casting the former Kansas State Wildcat as a hero for Ryan Day's Buckeyes.
After their 41-21 victory, Buckeyes players joined media and dignitaries on stage to celebrate.
Howard, who passed for 319 yards and three touchdowns on the day, was caught up in a head-turning controversy as he was barred from entering the stage platform by game security in video that is just now surfacing on social media.
"Fans could be heard in the background calling for Howard to be let on stage as a member of Rose Bowl security continues to deny him a place.
The stage is the same where fellow Rose Bowl hero Jeremiah Smith was invited for an interview with ESPN personality Rece Davis.
A fellow Buckeyes player can also be seen attempting to figure what is going on with security and why Howard is not being let on stage.

Michigan's rushing attack overpowered Washington as the Wolverines emerged with 34-13 victory on Monday to snap a 26-year national championship drought and cap an undefeated season.
Donovan Edwards ran for two long first-quarter touchdowns and Blake Corum punched it in twice in the fourth quarter for the favored Wolverines, who limited the Huskies' vaunted offense to a single touchdown.
"15-0," Michigan head coach Jim Harbaugh said as blue and yellow confetti rained down on the field in Houston.
"Took on all comers and we're the last ones standing. Champions."

LSU's Jayden Daniels, Oregon's Bo Nix and Washington's Michael Penix Jr., transfer quarterbacks who have all played at least five college seasons, and Ohio State receiver Marvin Harrison Jr. were announced as the Heisman Trophy finalists on Monday night.
The Heisman has been given to the nation's most outstanding college football player since 1935. This year's winner will be announced Saturday in New York. The top four vote-getters determined by more than 870 voters, which include members of the media and former Heisman winners, are selected as finalists.
With Nix and Penix, the Pac-12 has two Heisman finalists for the first time since 2010 when Stanford's Andrew Luck was the runner-up to Auburn's Cam Newton, and Oregon running back LaMichael James finished third in the balloting.
The Pac-12 is in its final season with its current membership before 10 schools depart, including Oregon and Washington to the Big Ten.

ANN ARBOR, Mich. (AP) — With more than two years of excellence being questioned and their coach banned from the Big House, J.J. McCarthy, Blake Corum and No. 3 Michigan stared down No. 2 Ohio State again and earned a victory that will go down as one of the biggest in the history of college football’s winningest program.
Rod Moore's interception in Michigan territory with 25 seconds left sealed a 30-24 win for the Wolverines on Saturday, running their win streak over the Buckeyes to three games while staying unbeaten with Jim Harbaugh serving out a suspension.
McCarthy, a third-year quarterback who could leave Michigan having never lost to Ohio State, said Harbaugh's message to the Wolverines on Friday night echoed that of his old coach, the late Bo Schembechler.
“The whole mantra: the team, the team, the team," McCarthy said. He said Harbaugh told them: “We are that team.”
