REPORT: JAMAL MUSIALA'S CONTRACT EXTENSION AT BAYERN MUNICH SEES HIS SALARY 'APPROACH 30 MILLION'

Grzegorz Wajda/SOPA Images/LightRocket via Getty Images

Jamal Musiala’s contract extension at Bayern Munich last season was quite a big story. For one, the extension reportedly bumped the 21-year-old up to the same wage as top earner Harry Kane on €25 million a year. He was also reportedly granted a release clause in his contract, a controversial measure for the Bavarians giants.

But, according to Bild, Musiala’s contract is even more beneficial to the former Chelsea FC youngster than it seems. The inconsistent German news outlet reports, as captured by @iMiaSanMia, Musiala could earn even more than first expected:

Jamal Musiala is currently the highest paid player at FC Bayern, earning more than Harry Kane. With all bonuses and clauses included, Musiala’s Bayern salary approaches €30m gross per year.

So what exactly does “approaches 30 million” mean, exactly? It is reasonable to assume, if this report is true, that this extra money is related to bonuses. They could even be fairly obscure bonuses, which would explain why they were initially missed.

But this is also Bild, who like to report Bayern’s wages very inconsistently. So perhaps they are simply wrong.

PEPE ON HOW PORTUGAL BECAME HIS COUNTRY

PEPE: "When I arrived in Portugal, I had the equivalent of five euros. I was at Immigration because I had come alone from Brazil at 18. A fax was supposed to arrive from Marítimo stating that I had permission to enter Portugal. With that money, I had to buy a phone card to call my mom and tell her I was okay. The other option would’ve been to buy food. I thought, ‘I’m going to ease my mom’s worries.’

"I arrived at 6 a.m. and checked my boarding pass—I didn’t have a flight until 11 p.m., and I had to eat. So I went to the airport and asked an employee, ‘Do you have anything to eat?’ He said yes, that they had everything on the menu. ‘But I don’t have any money,’ I told him. He looked at me, stepped out, and came back with a tray and a baguette and gave it to me."

"That person didn’t know who I was. And I still don’t know who he is, which is a shame. But that gesture helped me for the rest of my life. And since then, Portugal has become my country."

ASTON VILLA SEAL EUROPA LEAGIE LAST 16 SPOT; NOTTINGHAM FOREST FACE PLAYOFFS IN CONFERENCE LEAGUE

Aston Villa secured their place in the last 16 of the Europa League on Thursday with a 1-0 win at Fenerbahce, while Nottingham Forest slid to a costly defeat away to Braga.

Aston Villa secured their place in the last 16 of the Europa League on Thursday with a 1-0 win at Fenerbahce, while Nottingham Forest slid to a costly defeat away to Braga. Celtic blew a two-goal lead to draw 2-2 with Bologna and leave their qualification hopes hinging on next week's final round of games as arch-rivals Rangers bowed out despite a first win of the competition. Jadon Sancho's header midway through the first half in Istanbul earned Villa a sixth victory in seven European games, clinching a spot in the top eight and allowing Unai Emery's team to bypass the knockout phase play-offs.

Matty Cash struck the post in the second half and Villa held on as goalkeeper Marco Bizot produced a string of key saves with Fenerbahce pushing for an equaliser.

"I'm just happy to get my first goal for Aston Villa and to top it off with that, it's a win," Sancho, who joined on loan from Manchester United in September, told TNT Sports.

"Honestly, I know I can do a lot more. I'm very hard on myself in that aspect.

"It's nice to have a manager that backs you and obviously believes in you. Again, every opportunity I get I'm going to try and do 100% and hopefully I can deliver goals more."

Villa are second in the standings on 18 points and only trail Lyon on goal difference.

Lyon won 1-0 at Swiss side Young Boys with a goal from former Arsenal player Ainsley Maitland-Niles to ensure their spot in the last 16.

'Minute of madness' costs Forest

Forest face the prospect of going into the play-offs after a limp display in a 1-0 loss to Braga, who climbed up to fifth.

Morgan Gibbs-White had a penalty saved early in the second half and Braga went straight down the other end and scored as Forest captain Ryan Yates bundled into his own net.

Forest's struggles were compounded when Elliot Anderson was sent off for dissent in stoppage time.

"Very frustrating. One minute of madness. A game we never looked in trouble," Forest boss Sean Dyche told TNT Sports, with Braga not even managing a single shot on target.

"You might come away with a draw, but you shouldn't really lose that game.

"I don't think they hardly had a real chance, then we had a goalmouth scramble and even that can't go in."

Celtic had to settle for a point at Bologna and sit 24th in the 36-team table, occupying the final play-off berth. The Scottish champions host winless Utrecht in their final game next Thursday.

Martin O'Neill's side led through Reo Hatate's early strike in Italy, but the Japan international was sent off for a second booking on 34 minutes.

American defender Auston Trusty doubled Celtic's advantage before half-time, but Bologna fought their way back with goals from Thijs Dallings and Jonathan Rowe.

"We've given ourselves a chance - that's all, a chance - of qualifying. And from that viewpoint, I'm delighted," said O'Neill.

"My own view is that if we had stayed with 11 men, I think we would have won the game."

Rangers were eliminated despite their 1-0 victory over Ludogorets at Ibrox, where Mohamed Diomande grabbed the only goal.

Freiburg and Midtjylland are both on the cusp of a last-16 spot, with Roma well placed to join them after a 2-0 win over Stuttgart -- their fourth in a row in the Europa League.

IBRAHIM KANOTE CONFIRMS HIS FATHER HAS DIED IN HEARTBREAKING POST AFTER MISSING LIVERPOOL'S 3-0 WIN OVER MARSEILLE

Liverpool defender Ibrahima Konate has confirmed the death of his father with a heartbreaking post on Instagram.

Konate, 26, missed Liverpool's 3-0 win away in Marseille on Wednesday night having returned to France separately from the team for personal reasons.

Without divulging the nature of his separation from the squad, Arne Slot had said it was 'really sad', when asked about the omission.

And Konate has now confirmed that his father, Hamady, has passed away.

On Instagram, Konate shared the news and funeral details with his 3.2 million followers. It read: 'Indeed, we belong to Allah, and indeed to Him we shall return.

'Janazah (Funeral Prayer) For our father Hamady Konaté will take place on Friday, 23 January, after Jumu’ah prayer at In Sha Allah (12:45 pm).

It went on: 'The Messenger of Allah said: "There is no deceased person over whom a group of Muslims numbering one hundred prays, all of them interceding for him, except that their intercession is accepted."'

The address of the funeral was given and the message was signed off from 'The Konate family'.

When asked about the situation on Wednesday evening, Slot had said: 'No, first of all for the family matter, why he is not here, it is very sad for him. Second of all, we miss him because I mainly played him and [Virgil van Dijk].'

Joe Gomez came in for Konate for the impressive victory over Roberto de Zerbi's side in the Champions League.

And as it stands, no update has been given about when Konate might return to his club, though it seems highly unlikely he will play any part in the game against Bournemouth this weekend.

Konate's form has improved significantly in recent weeks after patchy displays earlier in the season and Liverpool are now unbeaten in 13 matches across all competitions.

Victory over the Cherries would help consolidate their place in the top four and the game is the late afternoon kick-off on Saturday.

AUDI F1 CAR LAUNCH

MOROCCO AFCON MEME 😂

MOROCCO AFCON MEME 😂

F1 SET TO.CRUNCH MEETING OVER 2026 ENGINE LOOPHOLE CONTROVERSY

Red Bull and Mercedes are at the centre of the controversy

F1 engine manufacturers are set to meet the FIA about the developing power unit controversy on the eve of the 2026 season.

The FIA has convened a meeting with the manufacturers and engine technical experts for Thursday amid concerns about the exploitation of a loophole in the wording of the 2026 F1 regulations.

Mercedes and Red Bull are rumoured to have found a way to run their engines at a higher compression ratio than the 16:1 limit set out in the rules.

This so-called power unit trick could have both teams a key edge over their rivals and has left Ferrari, Audi and Honda unhappy.

All three manufacturers are pushing for clarity from F1’s governing body on the matter and talks are planned for Thursday.

Audi F1 chief Mattia Binotto expressed fears Mercedes could enjoy a “significant gap” at the front in 2026.

Audi technical director James Key has called on the FIA to make the “right decisions”.

“We have to, as we do, trust the FIA with making the right decisions here,” he said at Audi’s 2026 launch event in Berlin on Tuesday night.

“It’s new regs. You’ve got to have a level playing field. If someone came up with a clever diffuser and you said it’s not the right thing to do, no one else can have it, but you can have it for the rest of the year.

“It doesn’t make sense. We’d never accept that.”

"I think if it’s sort of bypassing the intent of the regulations, then it has to be in some way controlled," Key added.

“So we trust the FIA to do that, because no one wants to sit a season out if you’ve got a blatant advantage that you can do nothing with in a homologated power unit. So I think for us, hopefully, the FIA will make the right decisions.”

WHAT IS THE SUPPOSED ENGINE TRICK?

For the forthcoming 2026 season, the compression ratio has been reduced from 18:1 to 16:1.

This is a key area as the amount of compression has an effect on the pressurisation of the air/fuel mixture and the combustion process.

Mercedes and Red Bull are accused of finding a loophole in the wording of the 2026 regulations, which states that measurements will not be taken during the working cycle.

The German manufacturer, who supply engines for four teams, and Red Bull, who now provide engines for themselves and sister team Racing Bulls, have supposedly found a way to have their power units adhere to the regulations when it is tested in stationary conditions, but critically reach a higher ratio when it is running and not subject to the checks.

It has been suggested that the potential performance gains from this trick could be as much as 10-15bhp, which equates to around 0.3-0.4 seconds per lap.

INDIANA HOOSIERS SECURE HISTORIC FIRST NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP

The Indiana Hoosiers have etched their names into the history books by capturing their first-ever College Football Playoff (CFP) National Championship. In a thrilling finale on Monday night, the Hoosiers defeated the Miami Hurricanes with a score of 27-21, completing a flawless 16-0 season.

This victory marks the culmination of what sports analysts are describing as the most remarkable turnaround in the history of college athletics. Just years ago, the program was struggling for relevance; today, they stand at the pinnacle of the sport. The championship game was a hard-fought battle, characterized by Indiana’s resilient defense and an opportunistic offense that rose to every challenge.

Heisman Trophy winner Fernando Mendoza was once again the catalyst for the Hoosiers’ success. Mendoza demonstrated elite composure throughout the game, most notably during a critical fourth-down play where he scrambled into the end zone for the decisive touchdown. His leadership on the field solidified his legacy as one of the greatest players in program history.

By finishing the year undefeated and dethroning established powerhouses, the Hoosiers have fundamentally shifted the landscape of college football. As the celebrations begin in Bloomington, Indiana’s historic run will be remembered as a true “fairytale” finish to a perfect season.

This timeline looks at how her money story changed over the years.

Serena Williams early money growth from 2016 to 2018

In 2017, Serena won the Australian Open while pregnant. Even though she played fewer matches later that year, her income stayed strong.

Bloomberg reported her net worth rising close to $180 million, mainly from endorsements.

In 2018, Serena made her comeback to tennis and became involved in new brand activities, amongst them, fashion partnerships. Forbes estimated that her net worth was around $200 million at the time.

Serena Williams business moves from 2019 to 2021

From 2019, Serena focused more on business. She launched Serena Ventures, investing in women-led and minority-owned startups.

CNBC confirmed she invested in companies like Lyft and SurveyMonkey.

In 2020, even with limited tennis due to the pandemic, Serena earned well through endorsements and business roles. Forbes estimated her net worth at about $225–240 million.

By 2021, she had invested in over 50 startups. Bloomberg reported her net worth moving closer to $260 million, driven more by business than tennis.

Serena Williams retirement shift from 2022 to 2024

Serena Williams made her declaration in 2022 that she was “evolving away” from tennis post the US Open.

Forbes revealed, that year, her net worth having already achieved about $290 million, thus, she became the richest female athlete in history.

Serena Williams net worth status heading into 2025 and 2026

'SHAMEFUL': HOW CONTROVERSIAL AFCON FINAL DESCENDED INTO TOTAL CHAOS

Senegal players stormed off the pitch after last-gasp penalty award before returning to beat Morocco in extra time

MAYHEM: THE AFCON FINAL BETWEEN MOROCCO AND SENEGAL WILL LIVE LONG IN THE MEMORY - FOR THE WRONG REASONS
AFP VIA GETTY IMAGES

A missed Panenka in the 24th minute of stoppage time, a team storming off the pitch and ultimately a second Africa Cup of Nations title for Senegal.

That, though, barely scratches the surface in telling the story of a truly extraordinary AFCON final on Sunday night.

Pape Gueye scored a brilliant extra-time winner to leave Morocco devastated in front of their home fans in Rabat.

Either side of that strike, total chaos ensued. Here’s what happened - and all the fallout.

Senegal goal ruled out

For 90 minutes, it had been a typical cagey, tense final. It remained goalless heading into eight minutes of stoppage time, at which point the mayhem began.

Senegal thought they had won it when Crystal Palace winger Ismaila Sarr nodded into the net on the rebound after Abdoulaye Seck's header had hit the woodwork.

However, the whistle had already gone as the referee deemed Seck to have fouled Achraf Hakimi.

Replays showed that to be a harsh decision, with Hakimi going down under minimal contact, but the quick whistle meant that VAR could not intervene.

Morocco lucky to get penalty

DRAMA: BRAHIM DIAZ’S LAST-GASP PANENKA PENALTY ATTEMPT WAS EASILY SAVED BY EDOUARD MENDY
AFP VIA GETTY IMAGES

A few minutes later, Morocco won a corner of their own at the other end.

West Ham’s El Hadji Malick Diouf headed to safety, having beaten Brahim Diaz to the ball. Diaz went down theatrically and appealed for a penalty.

The referee was sent to the pitchside monitor for a VAR review and then gave the penalty, deciding that Diouf had dragged Diaz to the ground before clearing the ball.

Chaos on and off the pitch

The two benches were already clashing as the referee went to the screen and that escalated when he then pointed to the spot.

Ismaila Sarr was booked for dissent and the Senegal players did not leave the penalty area as they continued to protest the decision.

Senegal's supporter group were sat at the other end of the stadium but they began jumping over the hoardings. Others threw chairs at stewards.

SENEGAL FANS CLASH WITH SECURITY DURING THE AFRICA CUP OF NATIONS FINAL

Riot police arrived on the scene and dragged several supporters away as clashes continued between fans and security personnel.

Gary Lineker was in the stadium and said it had "all got very horribly violent".

Senegal players walk off

Senegal head coach Pape Thiaw was incensed by the decision to award a penalty and waved at his players to come off the pitch in response.

The match was delayed for around 17 minutes as a result, with Sadio Mane having to go down the tunnel to urge his team-mates to come back on.

It appeared to be in doubt whether Senegal would return, but eventually the decision was made to continue the match.

Mane said after the game: "The referee can sometimes make mistakes, but we don’t know.

“We’re in the game and people judge. It could have been a penalty or not, but that wasn’t the most important thing. The most important thing was the people who were watching.

“I think that would convey a negative image of our football. I think Africa today does not deserve that.”

Diaz fluffs his lines

It was the 114th minute of the match by the time Diaz finally got his chance to step up and take the penalty.

On his return to the pitch, Edouard Mendy was booked for seemingly scuffing the spot. The ex-Chelsea goalkeeper then walked up and stood over the ball as Diaz waited to take the penalty.

Had he converted it, Diaz would have been a Moroccan legend forever. Instead, he attempted a Panenka and watched in horror as Mendy stood still and made the easiest save of his life.

Battle for a towel

Yehvann Diouf had a busy night and did not play a single minute.

The Senegal goalkeeper was tasked with protecting Mendy's towel in wet, slippery conditions. It turned into an extraordinary sequence of events.

The Moroccan ball boys repeatedly tried to snatch the towel away from him. In one incident, Diouf was lying on his stomach with the towel underneath him as a ball boy dragged him by the back of his coat.

SENEGAL COACH PAPE THIAW ORDERED HIS PLAYERS OFF THE PITCH IN REMARKABLE SCENES
AFP VIA GETTY IMAGES

Diouf was eventually chased down the touchline, backpedaling as several people chased after him.

Hakimi threw another one of Mendy's towels over the advertising hoardings, with El Hadji Malick Diouf jumping over the barrier to retrieve it.

How the managers reacted

Morocco boss Walid Regragui was unsurprisingly scathing in his response to Senegal storming off the pitch. He hit out at counterpart Thiaw.

“The image we’ve given of Africa is shameful," Regragui said.

"A coach who asks his players to leave the field... what Pape did does not honour Africa.”

Thiaw walked into his press conference and was met by cheers from Senegalese journalists and boos from the Moroccan press.

Arguments broke out between them as Thiaw sat down waiting, before he decided to walk out without speaking as the confrontations continued.

Elsewhere, Thiaw said sorry for leading his players off the pitch.

"I apologise for the football,” he said. “After reflecting on it I made them come back [on the pitch] - you can react in the heat of the moment. We accept the errors of the referee.

“We shouldn't have done it but it's done and now we present our apologies to football."

What else has been said?

FIFA president Gianni Infantino said: “It is unacceptable to leave the field of play in this manner, and equally, violence cannot be tolerated in our sport, it is simply not right.”

CAF released a statement on Monday morning in response to the various incidents, with punishments on the way.

It read: "The Confédération Africaine de Football (“CAF”) condemns the unacceptable behaviour of some players and officials during the TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations Morocco 2025 Final between Morocco and Senegal in Rabat last night.

"CAF strongly condemns any inappropriate behaviour which occurs during matches, especially those targeting the refereeing team or match organizers.

"CAF is reviewing all footage and will refer the matter to competent bodies for appropriate action to be taken against those found guilty."

'ODDEST INTERVIEW I'VE EVER SEEN' - UNAI EMERY'S SCATHING ASTON VILLA TITLE VERDICT

Behind-the-scenes issues may have bled into Emery’s post-match reaction.

Unai Emery aired out his frustrations in public. | Visionhaus/Getty Images

Aston Villa manager Unai Emery insisted his side are not among the favourites to even finish in the Premier League’s top five in a surprising interview which was branded “one of the oddest” ever seen by pundit Jamie Redknapp.

The Villans had the chance to close the gap to Premier League leaders Arsenal on Sunday but slumped to a bitterly disappointing 1–0 defeat to Everton, leaving them seven points behind in the title race but still comfortably in third.

Clearly frustrated at the result, Emery used his post-match press conference to follow Enzo Maresca, Ruben Amorim and Oliver Glasner in becoming the latest Premier League manager to leave eyebrows raised.

“We are not contender to be in the top five,” Emery told Sky Sports with emphasis on the final word. “We are [in the top five now] but we are still not being contenders.

“There are other teams with more potential than us.”

Asked why he felt that way, Emery fell silent, staring blankly with a subtle smile on his face before the interviewer promptly ended the conversation. “Thank you,” Emery responded immediately.

Ashley Young: ‘It’s Just Weird’

Considering Villa still sit seven points above Liverpool in fourth, with fifth-placed Manchester United a further point back, many were quick to question how Emery could believe his side, still level on points with Manchester City above them, are facing an uphill battle to qualify for the Champions League.

“He looked really angry,” former Villa winger Ashley Young reflected. “It could be ... maybe the injuries? Maybe another one added to the list with John McGinn, missing Boubacar Kamara. Massive players—[Amadou] Onana as well.

“Is it the sale of Donyell Malen? Is it him speaking out to say to the owners, ‘Look at my squad, I need more players?’

“It was a weird interview, to be honest. We thought he’d speak more about the game and a missed opportunity of closing the gap on Arsenal. To then say there’s five other teams with more potential ... it’s just weird.”

Jamie Redknapp: ‘Up There With Benítez, Keegan’

Emery was visibly frustrated. | James Gill/Danehouse/Getty Images

Fellow pundit Redknapp was equally as puzzled by the interview, both in terms of its contents and Emery’s behaviour.

Drawing comparisons to Rafa Benítez’s famous rant at Sir Alex Ferguson from 2009 or Kevin Keegan’s 1996 outburst which was also triggered by the Man Utd legend, Redknapp insisted he could not understand Emery’s intentions.

“It wasn’t quite Rafa ‘Facts’ or Kevin Keegan’s ‘I’d love it if we beat them,’ but it was certainly one of the oddest interviews I’ve ever seen,” he said.

“The bit at the end where he’s saying ... he just goes quiet ... It was a very sensible question, she wasn’t asking anything difficult for him. I don’t know really what he’s trying to allude to. I guess he’s just genuinely devastated with the performance and the result.

“They do need players. We looked at what they have on the bench, they were short. They haven’t got the options. Harvey Elliott hasn’t worked out and wasn’t on the bench, Jadon Sancho was ill.

“It looks like Boubacar Kamara is going to be out for a long time and John McGinn has a problem with his knee. They will need to strengthen in that midfield area.”

EXCLUSIVE: COLLEGE FOOTBALL SET TO RIDE NFL'S COATTAILS TO LONDON IN 2026 WITH INAUGURAL UNION JACK CLLASSIC .

The NFL ignored the criticism and has instead spent the better part of the last 20 years importing regular-season games to London. Now the league sells out Tottenham and Wembley Stadiums several times per season, while last year's Super Bowl broadcasts on Sky Sports and ITV reached a reported 3.4 million unique viewers in the UK. There's even speculation the game itself could be played in London in the future.

To marketing executives and former college football players Brian Dubiski and Thomas Hensey, who have worked with the NFL in London, the league's UK success story begged an obvious question.

'Why is no one taking college football to London?' Dubiski, a former Texas Tech defensive back, told the Daily Mail. 'The data and analytics prove that there are roughly 20 million American football fans in the UK, which is a large number. We've got an American football base already aligned over there.'

Their firm took the initiative by negotiating with schools and the elite Big 12 conference to buy one game per season at an undisclosed cost and move it to 86,000-seat Wembley Stadium. Starting with Arizona State-Kansas on September 19, the Union Jack Classic is aimed at meeting the growing demand for gridiron football in the UK, while introducing schools, players and even the sport itself to new fans.

At the very least, it should be more accessible than the NFL's London offerings.

'You know, the NFL sells out every game so quickly and it's hard to even get a ticket to some of these games, right?' Dubiski said. 'And so for us, we just wanted to [find] a sweet spot to where you could still get the same type of amazing hospitality that you get at the NFL games, all the way down to a more affordable entry-level ticket.'

Prices range from £58.75 ($78.78) up to £444 ($594), with some hospitality packages approaching £1,000 ($1,338).

Like Dublin's Aer Lingus College Football Classic, an annual game aimed at promoting American tourism in Ireland, thousands of team fans are expected to cross the Atlantic for the Union Jack Classic.

But unlike its Irish counterpart, the London game hopes to also attract locals unfamiliar with the Arizona State Sun Devils, Kansas Jayhawks and the endearing charms of college football.

To remedy this unfamiliarity, Hensey, Dubinski and partner Rob Yowell are offering American-style tailgating near Wembley, replete with marching bands, cheerleaders and the kind of pre-game atmosphere that's unique to college football.

To remedy this unfamiliarity, Hensey, Dubinski and partner Rob Yowell are offering American-style tailgating near Wembley, replete with marching bands, cheerleaders and the kind of pre-game atmosphere that's unique to college football.

For the uninitiated, college football players and NFL stars are playing the same game. But while the modern NFL has more of a UEFA Champions League feel, college football has the tribalism and camaraderie you might expect at Selhurst Park or Bramall Lane.

That's because the college game has far more history, dating back to 1869 and spending about a century as the sport's pre-eminent platform.

Ultimately the Super Bowl and the NFL's merger with the rival AFL would turn college football's tawdry younger sibling into America's highest-grossing and most popular league. But the foundation of the sport is rooted in prestigious institutions like Ivy League universities, military academies and Notre Dame, an Indiana Catholic school that still blends the teachings of Jesus Christ with those of legendary coach Knute Rockne.

(One oft-quoted Rockne line might be apocryphal, but still speaks to Notre Dame's ethos: 'Prayers work best when you have big players.')

Even the formation of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) sprang from wealthy elites' desire to protect America's future businessmen, politicians and military officers from football's inherent brutality.

The NCAA still oversees college football, and all collegiate sports for that matter, but things have changed dramatically on the gridiron. These days, the College Football Playoff (CFP) runs the Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS), which is more or less the upper rung of the amateur game.

And by the way, 'amateur' isn't really applicable these days. After years of draconian amateurism rules, many of which were flouted by schools, the NCAA now allows players to accept endorsement deals. What's more, colleges can now pay players directly thanks to a $2.8 billion settle in June, making the whole 'student athlete' thing a quaint relic of a passing era.

In 2025, college stars like Texas' Arch Manning and Miami's Carson Beck reportedly earned around $5 million (£3.7m), which is more than all but nine NFL rookie salaries over that same time. And whereas elite players once left school early for NFL riches, many are now petitioning the NCAA for added years of eligibility to capitalize on their superior earning potential at the college level.

In response, coaches, schools, donors and fans have called on the NCAA and legislators to add some structure to the wild-west economy that's arisen.

The relative silence from those bodies has been deafening, but that hasn't stopped the profits. For instance, the Texas Longhorns generated $330 million in 2024, while the national-champion Ohio State Buckeyes hauled in $255 million.

Most of the billions flowing through the sport go to schools in the top four conferences (SEC, ACC, Big Ten and Big 12) in the form of media rights deals, which have turned individual games into multi-million dollar affairs.

Just how much Dubiski and Hensey paid for next season's Arizona State-Kansas tilt remains a mystery due to confidentiality agreements. But costs are only a small portion of this undertaking. There are also endless logistical issues, many of which are more onerous than those faced by the NFL in London.

'You're bringing two teams over from universities here in the States,' Dubiski said. 'It's much different than even the NFL. Right now a travel team of just football players is 105 and then you bring the rest of just what they call the travel team, it's about 180 [individuals] and then that's just really the core football side of it before you start putting others on the top of that.

'It's actually a pretty daunting task.'

Some of that workload is helped by existing networks of service providers that already partner with the NFL, but Dubiski and Hensey aren't just concerned with practices and games. They need to ensure players have a rewarding experience in London or risk turning off potential future participants.

All of this is complicated by the requisite travel, which comes with the potential for jet lag ahead of the following week's games back in the US.

And therein lies the real concern for teams and coaches. As one high-ranking Arizona State football official told the Daily Mail, the experience will only be worth it if players have enough time to both see London and successfully prepare for the game with enough time.

If that delicate balance can be achieved, the source explained, this can become a unique recruiting tool to attract players to participating schools.

There are other measures of success, too, some of which Dubiski and Hensey have already achieved.

'It took us a full year to really navigate the stream on this, to get a conference involved, to get two teams committed to coming, to getting the right venue,' he said. 'So when we talk success, it was that last entire year's work before we announced to really put it all together. And that was a heavy lift, right?'

Then there are ticket sales, which he believes can be buoyed simply by playing at a prestigious venue like Wembley: 'We chose it for a reason.'

Besides, this is an annual event, and most business ventures don't turn a profit in the first year. So even if they can't break even in 2026, Dubiski sees potential for the Union Jack Classic thanks to partnerships with Wembley and the Big 12, as well as the UK's growing fascination with American football.

There's even the potential for a future game between the University of Cincinnati, Travis Kelce's alma mater, and Texas Tech, where Kelce's Chiefs teammate Patrick Mahomes went to school.

'I'm all for putting a Cincy-Texas Tech game in that stadium, and maybe we could have Travis Kelce and Patrick Mahomes,' Dubiski said.

And an appearance from Kelce's fiancée Taylor Swift wouldn't hurt either.

PATRIOTS ROASTED BY FORMER SUPER BOWL MVP AHEAD OF AFC CHAMPIONSHIP GAME

The New England Patriots are heading to the AFC Championship Game after taking care of the Houston Texans on Sunday.

The team will take on the Denver Broncos, who recently found out that starting quarterback Bo Nix will miss the rest of the postseason with a broken ankle. The Broncos were able to beat the Buffalo Bills anyway, but it'll be tough to move forward without their quarterback.

However, not everybody is penciling the Patriots into the Super Bowl.

Former NFL quarterback Nick Foles was watching the game and wanted to remind everybody about something. Foles mentioned that the Patriots "struggle against backup QBs" in championship-style games.

"Note for the Broncos and their fans: I know it has been an emotional 24 hours. I feel for Bo and the team, and I'm sending prayers for a strong recovery," Foles said. "A positive note going into the game versus the Patriots is that they struggle against backup QBs in championship-type games."

Of course, Foles is referring to Super Bowl LII, where he stepped in as the backup quarterback and led the Philadelphia Eagles to a win over the Patriots.

In that game, Foles played like a star, throwing for 373 yards and three touchdowns. The famous "Philly Special" play was born that night, and the Patriots received plenty of grief for losing to a backup quarterback.

Foles went on to play one more season with the Eagles after that Super Bowl before signing a massive free agent contract with the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2019.

It was a hilarious note from Foles, but the situations aren't exactly the same.

Foles was the backup, but he had already been a Pro Bowler once in his career. The quarterback was a reliable veteran passer and one of the best backups in the league.

The Broncos, though, have to rely on Jarrett Stidham. Stidham has just over 1,400 yards and eight touchdown passes in his career and has never played in a playoff game.

Interestingly, Stidham did spend two seasons with the Patriots, and now he has a chance to prove himself against one of his former teams.

SHANE LOWRY LAMENTS LAST-HOLE 'DISASTER' AS IRISHMAN LOSES IN DUBAI

Shane Lowry lamented a last-hole “disaster” as his hopes of landing a first individual win since 2022 slipped out of his grasp in the Dubai Invitational, the opening event of the new calendar year on the DP World Tour.

Victory at Dubai Creek went to Spaniard Nacho Elvira after Lowry, who held a one-shot lead on the 18th tee in the final round, signed off with a double-bogey 6 after going long with his approach then overcooking his escape from a bunker and finding the water.

“That was a disaster - that's what that was,” admitted Lowry, who deserved credit for talking to a small group of reporters when he was clearly hurting. “What can you do? You have to just learn from it and move on, lads.

“This game is nuts. I've just started my 18th season on tour and I'll never figure it out. I tried my best, did everything I could and hit the wrong club up the last. And that cost me a play-off.”

On a treacherous final hole, Lowry was just off the fairway with a peach of a drive only to then go long with his approach from 139 yards just as Elvira was holing a seven-footer for a birdie at the 17th to move level with him.

“I was just trying to hit a soft 9,” added Lowry. “If you hit a wedge at the flag and it comes out a little soft, it goes right into the water. In hindsight, I probably would have been better doing that because you get it up and down from there. But the bunker shot was shocking - it's not good enough.”

Lowry teamed up with McIlroy to win the Zurich Classic of New Orleans in 2024 and was also part of a winning team once again in the Ryder Cup in New York last year, when the former Open champion holed the putt on the 18th green in the singles to retain the trophy for Europe.

It stung, though, to miss out on what would have been a first solo success since the 2022 BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth. “I should be winning that,” he declared, having had to settle for a share of third place after a closing 69. “But I didn't and this is going to hurt for a day or two. I haven't won in a few years. It's hard to get over the line.

“I know this is not the biggest tournament in the world. But you've still got to beat Rory McIlroy down the stretch. I did that. I just gave it to Nacho at the end. It's a bit of a disaster and I'll lick my wounds and move on and get going for next week.”

McIlroy, who finished second behind Tommy Fleetwood in the event’s inaugural edition in 2024, had to settle for a share of third place on this occasion.

The Masters champion stormed into contention after making five birdies in a row - the burst equalled his career best, from the ninth and was half a roll away from making it six in a row as his putt at the par-3 14th came up agonisingly short.

Like Lowry, he found the bunker at the back of the 18th green and, as was the case two years earlier, finished with a disappointing bogey.

“Yeah, got it going in the middle of the round a little bit,” reflected the Masters champion. “Started hitting some good shots and making some putts. Yeah, it was a nice period of golf and that one at the par 3 could have gone in and kept it going.

“Yeah, this was always a week to just sort of get back at it and sort of get ready for next week I guess, more so than anything else. Saw some good signs, still didn't feel like I was very sharp out there for the most part, but felt like I was getting there as the week went on.”

It was the 16th time in 19 years in opening tournaments that McIlroy had started his year with a top-five finish. “Not bad is it,” he said. “Yeah, saw some decent signs out there, feel like I still need to sharpen up the game a little bit if I want to contend next week (in the Hero Dubai Desert Classic).

“I guess when you're in the mindset of just sort of, I guess, using rounds as, I don't want to say practise, because that sort of belittles what we're trying to do. But it's more you're preparing for the big part of the season, I guess, from April through to July. You're just really trying to see where your game's at and just trying to make little adjustments and tweaks here and there when you need to.”

McIlroy was speaking just before Lowry finished his round and, though it wasn’t to be on this occasion, he is confident that his good friend will be back in the winner’s enclosure before too long.

“Yeah, I think the Ryder Cup was a huge moment for him,” he said. “We've talked about it a lot, we're not spring chickens anymore. Shane's 38, I'm 36, I'm going to be 37 this year, he's going to be 39. We're playing for those bigger moments in our careers - majors and Ryder Cups.

“Obviously, I think it would be important to him to just get a few more wins on the CV, but all the wins that he has had have been very, very big. He's had some huge moments in the game, and we spend so much time together and we talk about it. Just trying to create those big moments is the driving force for the rest of our careers, basically.”

Elvira, who closed with a 69 to win by a shot from Kiwi Daniel Hillier, landed his third DP World Tour triumph, jumping 72 spots to fourth in the Race to Dubai heading into the opening Rolex Series event of the season at Emirates Golf Club.

Ewen Ferguson and Grant Forrest shared the honour of leading Scot as they both finished on one under to share 20th spot while Connor Syme (three over) and Calum Hill (nine over) ended up 30th and joint-47th respectively.
