NEW YORK AND NEW JERSEY LAUNCH INVESTIGATIONS INTO WORLD CUP TICKET PRICING

(Thee Center Square) — State prosecutors in New York and New Jersey launched a probe Wednesday into FIFA's ticketing practices for the upcoming World Cup tournament in response to soaring prices and claims of fans being misled about seating locations.

New York Attorney General Letitia James and New Jersey Attorney General Jennifer Davenport announced that they have sent subpoenas to FIFA president Gianni Infantino and others seeking information about the international group's ticket policies which they said have exceeded prices for any previous World Cup tournament.

“New Yorkers have been waiting years for the World Cup to come to their backyard, and they deserve a fair shot at affordable tickets," James said in a statement. "No one should be manipulated into paying sky-high prices for seats, and fans should be able to trust that the tickets they purchase will be the ones they receive."

The AGs said investigators will examine how FIFA’s ticket release schedule, public statements and other actions may have contributed to prices. They New Yorkers who had not received the tickets they paid for to call the office or submit a complaint online.

The 2026 World Cup, which kicks off June 11, is co-hosted by the U.S., Canada, and Mexico and includes at least eight matches in New Jersey, including the June 19 final.

Tickets for the games have ranged from a few hundred dollars to hundreds of thousands of dollars for the final round of matches. News reports have detailed stories of soccer fans who spent thousands of dollars on tickets through FIFA and didn't get the seats they promised.

Davenport said FIFA has "turned buying a ticket to the World Cup into a gauntlet of confusion, fake scarcity, and impossibly high prices – all at the expense of consumers and hardworking New Jerseyans."

"It’s an honor to host the World Cup, but the event is not an invitation to exploit our residents and visitors," she said in a statement.

- Chris Wade

There was no immediate comment from FIFA in response to the investigation, which has previously defended its "market rate" ticketing practices and blamed excessive prices for tickets to the matches on the resale market.

"If some people put on the resale market some tickets for the final at $2 million, number one, it doesn’t mean that the tickets cost $2 million, and number two, it doesn’t mean that somebody will buy these tickets," Infantino said in remarks earlier this month. "And if somebody buys a ticket for the final for $2 million, I will personally bring a hot dog and a Coke to make sure that he has a great experience."

ENGLAND WORLD CUP ANNOUNCEMENT: RUTHLESS THOMAS TUCHEL LEAVES BIG NAMES OUT OF 26-MAN SQUAD

Cole Palmer, Phil Foden, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Harry Maguire are the eye-catching names to miss out on England's World Cup squad; Ivan Toney, Djed Spence, Kobbie Mainoo, Eberechi Eze, Noni Madueke, Jarell Quansah and John Stones notable inclusions in Thomas Tuchel's 26-man group

Trent Alexander-Arnold, Cole Palmer and Phil Foden have been left out of England's World Cup squad

Ruthless Thomas Tuchel has left a number of high-profile names out of his England squad for the World Cup, while striker Ivan Toney has earned a shock recall.

"I love the tough decisions," Tuchel said on the squad being announced, and he has been true to his word.

Cole Palmer, Phil Foden, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Harry Maguire are the eye-catching names to have missed out on selection after Tuchel confirmed his 26-man squad for this summer's tournament in North America.

England's World Cup squad in full...

Defenders: Reece James (Chelsea), Ezri Konsa (Aston Villa), Jarell Quansah (Bayer Leverkusen), John Stones (Man City), Marc Guehi (Man City), Dan Burn (Newcastle), Nico O'Reilly (Man City), Djed Spence (Tottenham), Tino Livramento (Newcastle).

Midfielders: Declan Rice (Arsenal), Elliot Anderson (Nottingham Forest), Kobbie Mainoo (Man Utd), Jordan Henderson (Brentford), Morgan Rogers (Aston Villa), Jude Bellingham (Real Madrid), Eberechi Eze (Arsenal).

Forwards: Harry Kane (Bayern Munich), Ivan Toney (Al-Ahli), Ollie Watkins (Aston Villa), Bukayo Saka (Arsenal), Marcus Rashford (Barcelona), Anthony Gordon (Newcastle), Noni Madueke (Arsenal).

'Most shocking squad since 1998'

Sky Sports News' Kaveh Solhekol has described the squad as "probably the most shocking since 1998" and it is England's World Cup absentees, plus the leaks on the eve of Friday's announcement that have provided the biggest talking points.

Furious Maguire posted on social media to say he was "shocked and gutted" to miss out on a squad Tuchel told players about on Thursday, with the steady stream of information allowing onlookers to piece together the personnel in advance.

Foden and Palmer were the biggest names to miss after below-par club seasons with Manchester City and Chelsea respectively, plus a huge amount of competition in that area of the field. Real Madrid right-back Alexander-Arnold is another bold omission, albeit a more predictable one having not won a cap since last summer.

On the absence of Palmer, Foden, Maguire and Alexander-Arnold, Tuchel said: "Difficult phone calls. I respect all of them. As players, personalities. All of them have been in camp, have been excellent.

"To reduce it was difficult, sometimes painfully difficult. Even in the phone calls I felt the emotion. I called all the players who were in camp with us at least one time. A lot of them deserved to be with us.

"In the end we went back to the evidence we had - in September, October, November, the leadership group and the team had very few changes in November... that felt we had a bit of fresh air, younger players who played with excitement, it was a good mix of young and old and brought the best out of the players. We want to recreate that spirit - that's why we rely heavily on the group that was with us in those three camps.

"For some it was a positional thing and not bring[ing] five No 10s and making them play out of position."

In-form Nottingham Forest forward Morgan Gibbs-White, Crystal Palace midfielder Adam Wharton, Newcastle defender Lewis Hall, Man Utd's Luke Shaw and West Ham captain Jarrod Bowen are other notable absentees as Tuchel made an eye-catching first tournament selection.

No Liverpool players for England

This is the first time since the 1986 World Cup that a Liverpool player has not been named in an England tournament squad

Toney earns shock recall

The surprise name included is Ivan Toney, who has played just seven minutes of international football since Euro 2024.

The former Brentford striker told Sky Sports in February that he still harboured hopes of being included in the World Cup squad and his 32 goals in 32 Saudi Pro League games for Al-Ahli this season have seen him earn a shock recall.

He will provide the back up for captain Harry Kane alongside Ollie Watkins, who has also been recalled to the squad after scoring 10 goals for Aston Villa since being left out of March's internationals.

Newcastle defender Tino Livramento has been selected despite missing the past month with a thigh issue, while similarly versatile Spurs full-back Djed Spence has been included despite reportedly breaking his jaw on Tuesday.

Djed Spence and Trent Alexander-Arnold

Other notable inclusions include Man Utd midfielder Kobbie Mainoo, Arsenal duo Eberechi Eze and Noni Madueke, Bayer Leverkusen defender Jarell Quansah, and the experienced duo of John Stones and Jordan Henderson.

Alex Scott wheels away to celebrate his match-winning goal against Arsenal

England kick-off Group L against Croatia in Dallas on June 17, before playing Ghana on June 23 and Panama on June 27.

On daring to dream about England's World Cup chances, Tuchel said: "I can dream. But very quickly you go back and chop it up into steps you can influence.

"In March last year we said to the players 'let's try to win it'. I strongly believe if the energy and the commitment is right, this is really a brotherhood, the fans will notice and see.

"Let's play with hunger, with excitement. The goal is clear. But the focus will now be on the 10 days of camp... otherwise it's a lot to digest."

'Tuchel has kept to his word with big decisions'

Analysis from Sky Sports News' Rob Dorsett:

England's leakiest World Cup squad announcement ever.

The news started breaking about 6pm last night when we heard from Maguire, who wasn't included. Then we got the news that Toney was in from out of nowhere.

They are two of the big headlines, with the omissions of Palmer, Foden and Alexander-Arnold being the other big stories.

England leaving out those high-profile names will send shock waves around world football.

We've known for a long time that Tuchel has a problem at No 10. He's got an embarrassment of riches at No 10.

He said all along he wouldn't be able to take all of them. He would take the tough decisions and leave big names at home if they weren't performing well or didn't fit into his plans.

He's kept to his word on that in leaving Foden and Palmer out and Morgan Gibbs-White, who we need to mention. But is Gibbs-White ever going to get on the pitch?

When it cams to Palmer and Foden, I expected maybe one of them would make it and not both, because Tuchel has talked about his extensive No 10 options for a long time. He has a wealth of talent in that position. We knew Jude Bellingham and Morgan Rogers were going to go, but how many more No 10s did he need and how many could he fit in? The No 10 debate will go on and on.

There is no doubt Tuchel has some really interesting questions to answer.

It's been the most bizarre England squad announcement I've known in four tournaments. Tuchel has certainly put his stamp on things and he doesn't mind making the big decisions and leaving the big names out.

Why has Toney been called up?

Analysis from Sky Sports' Peter Smith:

"Toney’s call-up is a shock. He’s played just seven minutes of football for England under Thomas Tuchel – and has not been selected since his one brief cameo against Senegal in June 2025.

"But it’s also a pick which makes sense in many ways. Whatever caveats you want to put on the quality of the Saudi Pro League, Toney has scored 32 goals in 32 appearances for Al Ahli, where he’s won two league titles.

"So he has form, he’s played in a hot, draining climate which will have parallels with North America this summer. And remember the role he’ll likely be playing: an impact target man if England need to go long late in a game.

"He did that to great effect against Slovakia in the Euros where he was sent on deep into stoppage time with England losing and ended up setting up Harry Kane’s winner in extra-time."

'Only Tuchel would have picked this squad'

Sky Sports' News Kaveh Solhekol at Wembley:

"I think it's very shocking, very surprising.

"I think only Tuchel would've picked this England squad.

"I think he's left out some of the most talented English players.

"This is probably the most shocking England squad since 1998, when Glenn Hoddle left out Paul Gascoigne."

Your views: Mixed reaction to Tuchel's squad...

England World Cup talking points

CallumH16: We have been used to squads being selected on the basis of form under Southgate, which is why I think this squad selection comes as such a shock. It's horrific from Tuchel! There are many players that haven't played enough minutes this season: Stones, James, Henderson, Livramento.

Tom: We have had years of moaning about England managers being too cautious picking the obvious players. It's a breath of fresh air to have a manager going against the grain. Shows leadership and confidence.

Mcgly 93: For years England fans used to go mad at managers for taking players all because of their name. There's an argument here that the gaffer has gone against that so fair play. We will see what happens however if it goes pear-shaped then its P45, do not pass go and do not collect 200...

Joe: What an embarrassing day for English football! And I was there for the 98 squad announcement!

AdamTilley: Has Tuchel been watching the Premier League this season??

Big Dan: Weakest England squad I've ever seen heading into a tournament! That defence is horrible to look at. Morgan Gibbs-White had to be included. Putting the Arsenal front three in is ridiculous, he's done that based on winning the league as all three have been poor.

Gary McKnight: The first ever England manager (especially in my lifetime anyway) to not pick players on reputation. Tuchel hasn't caved in to outside pressure and I respect that. I trust that man!

James: Everyone please calm down. We aren't used to a serial winner as manager. The vast majority of players left out of the squad are out of form. Morgan Gibbs-white and Lewis Hall are unlucky but the player ahead of them are also quality.

What's next for England?

England will depart for the United States on Monday, June 1, 16 days prior to their opening group encounter against Croatia (Wednesday, June 17).

They will be based in Swope Soccer Village in Kansas City, Missouri during the tournament.

England have World Cup warm-up matches with New Zealand on June 6 (9pm UK time) and Costa Rica on June 10 (9pm UK time) before their tournament opener against Croatia.

LIVERPOOL'S EKITIKE RULED OUT OF WORLD CUP WITH FRANCE

Didier Deschamps has confirmed the news after the 23-year-old suffered a serious injury against PSG.

LIVERPOOL AND FRANCE forward Hugo Ekitike will miss the 2026 World Cup after suffering a serious injury in his club’s Champions League loss to Paris Saint-Germain, his national team coach Didier Deschamps said Wednesday.

The 23-year-old crumpled in a heap holding his lower right leg with a suspected ruptured Achilles tendon during the first half of Liverpool’s 2-0 quarter-final second-leg defeat to European champions PSG on Tuesday.

“Unfortunately, the severity of (Ekitike’s) injury will prevent him from finishing the season with Liverpool and taking part in the World Cup,” Deschamps said in a statement released by the French football federation.

“This injury is a huge blow for him, of course, but also for the French national team.

“I wanted to express my full support for him, as well as that of the entire coaching staff.”

Ekitike has scored 17 goals in 45 matches in all competitions for Liverpool since arriving at Anfield for a fee of £79 million ($105.5 million) last summer.

Since winning his first France cap in a World Cup qualifier in September last year, Ekitike has been a regular in Les Bleus’ set-up, scoring two goals and providing one assist in his eight caps.

RANKING THE BEST KITS AT THE 2026 WORLD CUP INCLUDING SOUTH AFRICA'S GENERATIONAL AWAY SHIRT

Many teams have unveiled their new home and away kits for the 2026 World Cup, but a handful stand out amongst the rest.

Can you believe it? We are just 80 days away from witnessing the opening match at this summer's World Cup, an event that will be welcomed by kit-lovers all over the world.

The tournament will get underway on June 11 as co-hosts Mexico welcome South Africa to the famous Estadio Azteca in Mexico City.

Mexico will wear a shirt that pays homage to one of their most iconic jerseys, the 1998 World Cup design worn in France, while South Africa are expected to don their viral green and gold striped kit.

Inspired by the kit they wore on home soil at the 2010 World Cup, the kit that features traditional patterns and stripes could be a fan favourite at the tournament in the United States, Mexico and Canada.

Someone on social media described the design as a masterpiece, while another commented: "The best national jersey I've seen".

Most of those taking part in the 48-team tournament have been introduced to their new-look kit, with the likes of Adidas and Nike launching their designs to the wider public in recent months.

So, which kits stand out amongst the rest?

SPORTbible have decided to pick out some of our favourites ahead of this summer's showpiece event, and before you mention it, yes, we enjoy the classic Adidas trefoil logo, but who doesn't?

Scotland – Away

Blending heritage with a contemporary aesthetic, Scotland have returned to scarlet red – last used in the 1980s – for this summer's World Cup.

The design draws on some of Scotland’s most iconic away kits, with its vertical purple pinstripes "adding depth and detail to create a dynamic look that stands out on the international stage."

Sometimes, simple is best. SPORTbible rating: 9/10

South Africa – Away

Inspired by the kit they wore on home soil at the 2010 World Cup, South Africa might just scrape the award for best kit at this year's World Cup.

The updated design pays tribute to South Africa's 12 official languages, which is described by Adidas as "a powerful reflection of the nation's diversity, unity, and shared love for football."

Moreover, the subtle graphic elements woven into the fabric symbolise "the many voices that rise together in stadiums across the country and around the world."

Everything about this kit is sublime. From the dark green and gold colour combination to its stripes and traditional patterns, it really is a thing of beauty. SPORTbible rating: 10/10.

Chile – Away

Chile's vibrant away kit for this summer's World Cup pays homage to the Desierto Florido, a rare natural phenomenon that occasionally transforms the Atacama Desert into a colourful bloom.

A recurring theme in this list is Adidas and its wonderful retro trefoil logo. For the first time in 36 years, the classic logo has returned to the international football stage, and we couldn't be happier about it.

The classic Originals look injects a 90's vibe to proceedings and this kit, with its striking floral graphic and earthy crackle design, is a joy to behold. SPORTbible rating: 9/10

Costa Rica – Away

Inspired by the colourful toucan, a bird that symbolises social connection, this all-over blue and fuchsia design embodies the spirit of Costa Rica's friendly and joyful culture. One thing is for sure, it will stand out on match day.

The pastel pinks and blues are wonderful. Not everyone's cup of tea but we're a big fan. SPORTbible rating: 8.5/10

Germany – Home

Like so many of the other shirts at this summer's tournament, Germany has paid homage to some of the nation’s most iconic jerseys in years gone by, with its diamond shape and chevron detailing.

For us, long-sleeved shirts are a winner. A timeless classic which will be the last Adidas release before Nike take over. SPORTbible rating: 8.5/10

Curacao – Away

Another contender for the best kit at this summer's World Cup. The Curacao away kit celebrates the capital city, Willemstad, and the colourful buildings that reside in its Punda and Otrobanda districts.

A colourful tribute to Curacao's distinctive architecture, the shirt is predominantly pastel yellow, with bold pink, turquoise, and orange stripes, as well as blue details on its sleeves and cuffs.

A stunning jersey for the country’s first-ever World Cup. SPORTbible rating: 9.5/10

Germany – Away

For the second time in this list, Germany has been given a mention. And can you blame us? This shirt is a nod to the blue quarter zips worn in 1954, as well as the classic training tops of the 60s, 70s, and 80s.

Adding to the retro aesthetic, a continuous zigzag pattern of diagonal jagged stripes runs across the fabric, drawing inspiration from classic Adidas shoebox designs.

"I find a Germany jersey in this color unusual – but really good,” said Germany's Florian Wirtz. We agree. SPORTbible rating: 9/10

Japan – Away

The shirt features 12 vertical stripes over an off-white base, with eleven of those lines representing the players on the field. The red one in the middle? Well, that embodies the red sun of the national flag.

This design is reminiscent of baseball shirts, with the sport being one of the most popular in Japan. Simple, but effective. SPORTbible rating: 8/10

France – Away

The only Nike representative on this list. (Sorry, we just love the trefoil logo).

France’s glacier green away kit for the World Cup pays homage to the Statue of Liberty, with its colours mimicking those of the statue, a gift to the US from France in 1886. In fact, this jersey is called "LibertΓ©".

Meanwhile, the copper-colored rooster is another homage to the colour of the Statue of Liberty before its oxidation. SPORTbible rating: 8.5/10

2026 WORLD CUP: IRAN ASKS FIFA TO MOVE GAMES FROM US TO MEXICO

Iran are scheduled to play their 2026 World Cup group games in LA and Seattle

Iran has asked Fifa to move its 2026 World Cup games from the US to Mexico as the wrangling over the war-torn country’s participation continues.

The Iranian embassy in Mexico posted a statement on social media saying that talks were ongoing over the possible solution after President Trump suggested that it may not be safe for Iran to travel to the US for this summer’s tournament.

Iranian Football Federation president Mehdi Taj was quoted as saying: “When Trump has explicitly stated that he cannot ensure the security of the Iranian national team, we will certainly not travel to America.

“We are currently negotiating with Fifa to hold Iran’s matches in the World Cup in Mexico.”

Iran are currently scheduled to play their first two group games against New Zealand and Belgium in LA, with their third against Egypt in Seattle.

Three Mexican cities – Guadalajara, Mexico City and Monterrey – are set to stage fixtures at the World Cup, which is also being co-hosted

But matches have already been allocated to those cities and the teams involved, who include Japan, South Korea, Tunisia and Japan, have already made their tournament plans accordingly.

Iran put World Cup ball back in Fifa’s court

Moving games would therefore represent a major logistical headache for Fifa and could anger local authorities in LA and Seattle who have already budgeted for their schedule.

On top of that, the bulk of knockout stage games will be in the US, meaning it would be impossible to avoid Iran playing in the States if they progressed.

The suggestion does, however, put the ball back in Fifa’s court with less than 100 days to go until the biggest ever World Cup kicks off on 11 June.

Iran has refused to formally withdraw despite officials saying they would be unable to travel to the US amid the ongoing military operations led by the Trump administration and Israel.

After Fifa chief Gianni Infantino relayed apparent assurances from Trump that Iran would be welcome at the World Cup, the US President undid that work by saying: “The Iranian national team is welcome at the World Cup, but I really don’t think their presence is appropriate, for their own lives and safety.”

The Iranian men’s national team hit back in a post on social media, saying: “No one can exclude the Iranian national team from the World Cup; the only country that could be excluded is the one that merely holds the title of ‘host country’ without being able to ensure the safety of the teams participating in this global event.”

SEPP BLATTER BACKS CALLS FOR FANS TO AVOID US MATCHES AT 2026 WORLD CUP

  • Former FIFA president Sepp Blatter has backed calls urging fans to avoid travelling to the US for the 2026 World Cup, citing security and immigration concerns
  • Blatter’s comments come amid wider debate over the 2026 World Cup after Donald Trump last year questioned ‘safety’ in several US host cities

Former FIFA president Sepp Blatter has backed calls urging football fans to avoid travelling to the United States for matches at the 2026 World Cup, according to multiple media reports, citing concerns over security, immigration enforcement and the country’s political climate.

Blatter voiced his support for comments made by Swiss lawyer and anti-corruption expert Mark Pieth, who warned that fans should “stay away” from World Cup matches in the US. Pieth worked with FIFA on governance reforms during Blatter’s presidency

“I think Mark Pieth is right to question this World Cup,” Blatter wrote in a social media post, endorsing Pieth’s advice to supporters.

The 2026 tournament will be jointly hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico from 11 June to 19 July, with the majority of matches scheduled to take place in the US.

Pieth cited domestic developments in the United States, including aggressive immigration enforcement and recent deaths linked to clashes involving federal authorities, as reasons for discouraging travel. He warned that fans could face heightened scrutiny at US borders and risk being denied entry or deported if they fail to comply with officials, adding that supporters may be “better off watching on television.”

Concerns have intensified following the expansion of US travel bans affecting several countries whose national teams have qualified for the World Cup. Fans from Iran and Haiti are expected to be barred from entering the United States, while supporters from Senegal and the Ivory Coast face restrictions unless they already hold valid visas.

Concerns over safety have also entered the political debate, after US President Donald Trump suggested that World Cup matches could be moved away from host cities he considers “unsafe,” comments that drew criticism from local officials and organisers, according to separate reports.

Criticism has also emerged from within European football. Oke GΓΆttlich, a vice-president of the German football federation, said the idea of a boycott should be “seriously considered.”

Blatter, who resigned as FIFA president in 2015 amid corruption investigations and was later acquitted alongside former UEFA chief Michel Platini, has remained a vocal critic of FIFA’s current leadership under Gianni Infantino. Infantino dismissed the concerns, insisting fans would continue to attend in large numbers.

WORLD CUP WINNERS TO POCKET $50 MILLION

Fifa and its president Gianni Infantino have increased the size of the tournament and the prize money to boot. File photo: Reuters

The winners of the 2026 World Cup will receive US$50 million in prize money as part of a record financial contribution for the tournament from Fifa, world football's governing body announced on Wednesday.

The total World Cup prize fund of US$655 million (558.5 million euros) represents an increase of almost 50 percent from the US$440 million distributed to teams taking part in the last tournament in Qatar in 2022.

However, next year's World Cup – to be held in the United States, Mexico and Canada from June 11 to July 19 – will be the first to feature 48 teams, a 50 percent increase from the 32 teams last time.

The Argentine Football Association received US$42 million in prize money after Lionel Messi inspired them to glory three years ago, when they won on penalties in the final against France.

France received US$30 million for their run to the final.

This time, the beaten finalists will pocket US$33 million, with the third-place finishers collecting US$29 million and the other defeated semi-finalists getting US$27 million.

Teams eliminated in the group phase will receive US$9 million, while all 48 participating nations will get an additional US$1.5 million to cover "preparation costs."
