If you are counting the people who are still in Tony Romo’s corner following his DUI arrest — and possibly the undoing of his lucrative broadcasting career — put Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones at the front of that group.

Jones came to Romo’s defense following his arrest on July 23 on allegations of driving under the influence in Wisconsin.

Speaking to Fox 4 Dallas-Fort Worth’s Mike Doocy from Cowboys training camp in Oxnard, California, Jones was 1 of the few to stick up for Romo over the last week, and said he’d been in communication with Romo several times since the arrest.

"I’ve been talking to him … I love him, I love what he’s about, I love his character,” Jones told Doocy. “He’s a very, very unique talent, and the real question is, and I don’t even have to ask what the answer is, is do you think Tony Romo knows how to get up when he gets knocked down? He’s had a life of that. And that’s one of his greatest attributes. He can handle adversity and this is something that he will work through.”

Romo was put on indefinite leave by CBS Sports as their lead NFL color commentator following his arrest, with 3-time NFL Defensive Player of the Year J.J. Watt taking his spot alongside play-by-play man Jim Nantz and sideline reporter Tracey Wolfson on the network’s No. 1 NFL coverage team.

“There have been very few players Jerry Jones and family have held in higher regard than Tony Romo,” NFL reporter Ed Werder wrote on his official X account on August 1.

Romo signed a 10-year, $180 million contract with CBS Sports in 2020 that 1 television executive told The Athletic’s Andrew Marchand was the “worst contract in media history.”

While earning praise for his acuity and wit on broadcasts before signing the contract, Romo has turned into a liability in the years since.

"CBS clearly does not want the cloud from this story to shade its most important property,” Marchand wrote on July 31. ” … Romo comes across as a very affable guy and many have described him to me over the years as a ‘big kid.’ But he is not known as a hard worker, and it has shown on the air. Prior to his massive new deal, Nantz and Romo were welcoming comparisons to Pat Summerall and John Madden. Since then, the duo has regressed, and Romo often sounded unprepared, saying odd things.”

Romo played for the Cowboys from 2003 to 2016, where he was a 4-time Pro Bowl selection and earned NFL All-Pro honors in 2014.

Romo made the Cowboys as an undrafted free agent in 2003 and became the full-time starter in 2006. In 10 seasons as a starter, Romo led the Cowboys to the playoffs 4 times before a preseason back injury saw him lose his starting job to current Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott in 2016.

Romo retired after the season and went directly into the broadcast booth.

In 13 seasons, Romo threw for franchise records of 34,183 yards and 248 touchdowns. He also set NFL records for the most consecutive road games with a touchdown pass (41) and most games in a single season with a passer rating of at least 135.0 (6).

JEREY JONES OPENS UP ON BATTLE WITH CANCER

OXNARD, Calif. – Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones revealed in the upcoming Netflix documentary "America's Team: The Gambler and His Cowboys," which debuts next week, that he was diagnosed with and overcame stage-four cancer.

Jones, 82, talked about his battle on Wednesday and his perspective throughout the process.

"Millions of people are dealing with setbacks every day," Jones said. "You've gotta keep that in mind all the way through. There's no question that from my point of view, the great life that I get to have…"

"Being around this team, being around the NFL, being around sports, that for me if you need to be around a positive attitude when you're trying to deal with something like that, I've been around it… I've been blessed to be a part of the NFL."

Earlier on Wednesday, Cowboys head coach Brian Schottenheimer also revealed that he had battled cancer in the past. Both he and Jones spoke about their respective experiences together, and while Jones didn't delve into what the two talked about, he did harp on the gift of life that everyone has.

"We talk about pressure, we talk about challenges. I told a coach one time, he said, 'Man, that going for two, that just adds pressure.' I don't want to sound condescending, but I said, 'Everybody on that TV, everybody in those stands, they're dealing with things. They're dealing with pressure.'" Jones said.

"We all have pressure, let's all be thankful we're here to get to deal with it."

Jones explained that he was part of a treatment trial with PD-1, an immune checkpoint inhibitor that helps the immune system recognize and attack cancer cells. In his words, it "really, really, really worked."

One of the side effects was Jones had to have both of his hips replace because of what it did to his bones. That pales in comparison to what could have been in the worst-case scenario.

"You don't like to think about your mortality, but I was so fortunate to have some great people that sent me in the right direction…" Jones said. "I'm proud to get to be sitting here with you guys and be getting to do what we do. But [mortality] was in the back of your mind."

As the title of the Netflix documentary details, Jones has always been a gambler. For some, an encounter with a devastating part of life like cancer may change their perspective on life. For Jones, it didn't, because he's already been living with the appreciation of what's around him.

"I was with the Cowboys because I wanted the job of running the Cowboys," Jones said. Not necessarily for my children, not necessarily for anybody, I wanted that job. That's the way it's been, and when you're passionate and get totally engulfed in what you're doing, that helps you deal with some of the other issues we deal with in life."

In terms of personnel, Cowboys backers are aware of the attrition that struck in the last seven months, with the team allowing key free agents to leave and not doing all that much to replace them. Don’t mention past transactions to Jerry Jones, of course, but when it comes to Cowboys great Troy Aikman, you might get a more honest assessment of what’s going on with the messiest 3-3 team in the NFL.

Offseason moves aside, Aikman said on Thursday that the Cowboys problems are not limited to the players who are no longer on the team—there’s plenty to worry about with the players who are still around.

Speaking on Dallas sports radio, 96.7 The Ticket, Aikman laid into one of the units that is not supposed to be all that bad for the Cowboys: the receivers.

And he started with star playmaker CeeDee Lamb, who was given a four-year, $136 million contract after missing training camp and most of the preseason, but has not been up to snuff yet this season.

“I think the routes are terrible. I think they run terrible routes,” Aikman said (via Jon Machota of The Athletic). “And I’ve thought that beyond this year. I think CeeDee (Lamb) has got to improve in his route running. As a quarterback, if you’re not certain where guys are going to be consistently, it’s hard to play the position. That’s what I see”

CeeDee Lamb Not the Only WR at Fault

The criticism was not limited to Lamb, either. The Cowboys’ No. 2 receiver, Brandin Cooks, has been out with an infection in his knee that will cause him to miss four games (he has missed two). Not having his veteran leadership has hurt, but the problems go beyond Cooks.

Said Aikman: “I see guys lazy coming off the line of scrimmage. Sometimes they run, usually if they do, it’s because they’re anticipating they’re going to get the football on that play, but if they’re not, they don’t. And it all ties together. I’m not impressed with that part of it.”

Lamb is the most obvious target, though, because he is coming off a year in which he led the league and set a franchise record with 135 receptions, for 1,749 yards.  His yards per game have dropped from 102.9 last year to 77.8 this year, and he is catching just 58.2% of the balls thrown his way.

The team’s No. 3 receiver, Jalen Tolbert, has played well, with 24 catches and 290 yards, and a 70.6% catch rate. But he is inexperienced, as are the Cowboys’ other options, Kavontae Turpin and Jalen Brooks.

Cowboys’ Dak Prescott Putting up Subpar Numbers

Aikman offered his view of what’s happening with the Cowboys receivers as a defense of quarterback Dak Prescott, who is also collecting a major new contract, having landed a $240 million, four-year deal just before the start of the season.

But Prescott has been under pressure thanks to the Cowboys putting out two rookies on the offensive line, and combined with the lack of execution from the receivers, Prescott has been able to put up only eight touchdowns and six interceptions.

His 85.5 quarterback rating is the worst of his career.

“It’s hard to play the (quarterback) position if you’re not certain how guys are going to run routes or where they’re going to be,” Aikman said. “And I’m not speaking for Dak (Prescott). Dak may say, ‘Hey, I think (their routes) are amazing.’ But as a former quarterback watching it, it’s gotta get a lot better.”

LIONS EDGE RUSHER AIDAN HUTCHINSON CARTED OFF WITH BROKEN TIBIA

ARLINGTON, Texas -- Detroit Lions star edge rusher Aidan Hutchinson broke a tibia during Sunday's 47-9 win over the Dallas Cowboys in a scary scene at AT&T Stadium.

Hutchinson injured his left leg on a play in which he was sacking Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott. Hutchinson's leg appeared to snap above the ankle when it collided with the left leg of teammate Alim McNeill as Hutchinson was pulling Prescott down.

Members of the Lions and Cowboys quickly circled around Hutchinson as team doctors rushed to his side. Hutchinson's leg was placed in an air cast, and he exited on a cart.

The Lions said after the game that Hutchinson underwent immediate surgery at a Dallas-area hospital.

"Hate it for Hutch. That's tough. It was tough," Campbell said. "He's in good hands right now. He's being taken care of. He'll stay back here and obviously he's going to be down for a little while. So, that's tough and it's hard when you lose somebody like him, but we'll know a lot more after this and obviously wish him the best."

McNeill called the injury "frightening to see." And he wasn't initially aware of the severity of Hutchinson's injury right after it happened, although he was involved in the play.

"That's what I felt, but I haven't seen it myself so I couldn't really tell," McNeill said after the game. "I didn't know if that was him or not, but I did feel somebody like leg with me and then I saw Hutch down ... that's crazy. "

Lions running back David Montgomery, who finished with two rushing touchdowns, said he has faith that Campbell and his staff can prepare players to fill Hutchinson's role.

"It's an unfortunate loss for us. A big, big, big blow for us and it's just more personal for us now because of the kind of guy that Aidan is and the kind of character that he has and what he brings to the locker room and to this team," Montgomery said. "So, I know for me personally, I'm going to take it real personal for a guy like Aidan because he was the heartbeat of this team, and he still will be."

Hutchinson, the second pick of the 2022 NFL draft, has 7.5 sacks this season, the most through five games by a Lions player since 1983 (William Gay), per ESPN Research. Entering Week 6, Hutchinson led the NFL in sacks, pressures and pass rush win rate even though the Lions were coming off their bye week.

Without Hutchinson, Detroit will likely rely heavily on defensive linemen Josh Paschal, Levi Onwuzurike, DJ Reader and Isaac Ukwu to help pick up the slack. The injury could reopen the door for James Houston, who was ruled inactive for the game at Dallas.

"We're all feeling for him 100 percent," Onwuzurike said. "It's hard to rebound from a guy like Hutch. That s--- is tough. He's a freak. He was probably going to break the sack record this year so when you lose someone like that, that's real tough but we've got hungry guys. ... So, I think the guys will handle business 100 percent."

McNeill said he and his teammates on the defensive side of the ball don't anticipate any major schematic changes.

"We're still going to get off the ball off that edge, play that run and set that edge, but I don't think too much will change, maybe like some third-down stuff but I don't really think too much, too much will change," McNeill told ESPN while exiting the locker room. "It will just be a change of rotation and stuff like that, but I don't think anything will be too drastic, though."

COWBOYS HOLDS OFF NFC EAST RIVAL GIANTS IN DEFENSIVE BATTLE

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. -- Entering Thursday night's game, the New York Giants and Dallas Cowboys shared last place in the NFC East at 1-2, a game behind the 2-1 Washington Commanders and Philadelphia Eagles.

The Cowboys scored two first-half touchdowns and limited the Giants to three field goals to lead 14-9 at the half. It was a defensive battle the rest of the way, as neither team scored a touchdown in the second half.

Dallas picked up their second win of the season with a final score of 20-15, but star edge rusher Micah Parsons was carted off the field late in the game to get an X-ray.

Here are the most important things to know from Thursday night for both teams:

Dallas Cowboys

Dak Prescott did not speak to the media prior to Thursday's game against the New York Giants. He said he would speak "post win." The Cowboys got the win, but it wasn't an artistic beauty. However, after the Cowboys were embarrassed in back-to-back home losses to the New Orleans Saints and Baltimore Ravens, the only thing that mattered was getting a win on a short week.

Being 2-2 is so much better than 1-3. Had the Cowboys lost, it would have marked the first time they lost three September games since 2001, and they would have been in last place in the NFC East.

Prescott was sharp, especially in the first half with touchdown passes to CeeDee Lamb (55 yards) and Rico Dowdle (15 yards). The defense finally stopped the run and stiffened in the red zone, holding the Giants to five field goals.

Prescott has now won 13 straight against the Giants. His last loss came in 2016 as a rookie. He tied the second-longest win streak by a quarterback against a single opponent since quarterback stats were first tracked in 1950. Tom Brady beat the Buffalo Bills 13 straight times from 2003 to 2010, and Steve Young beat the Rams 13 straight from 1987 to 98. He will get a chance for No. 14 on Thanksgiving.

Promising trend: When Lamb has some sideline issues, the best seems to come out of him. During last year's loss at San Francisco, Lamb kept to himself on the sideline and then followed with six games with at least 11 catches and seven games with more than 100 yards. In last week's loss to New Orleans, Lamb had a spat with Prescott and did not speak to the media after the game. On Tuesday, Lamb was apologetic and said he would be better. In the first half alone, he had six catches for 94 yards (both season highs) and a touchdown.

Eye-popping stat: Brandon Aubrey has played 21 games for the Cowboys. He has three field goals of 60 yards in his career, including a 60-yarder in the third quarter against the Giants. That's one off the NFL record held by Brett Maher, who made four with the Cowboys over two different stints. Aubrey made a 60-yarder last week against the Ravens. He is 2-for-2 from 60 yards this season. The rest of the league is 0-for-2, according to ESPN Research.

Silver lining: The Cowboys will have 10 days to get ready for the presently undefeated Pittsburgh Steelers. The time will help because there is still a lot that needs to be corrected, even with the win. In the past three games, opposing quarterbacks have missed on only 19 passes. Against the Saints and Ravens, that was understandable because both teams were so dominant on the run. Giants quarterback Daniel Jones had too much time to throw for much of the game after previously being tormented by the Cowboys, who sacked him 24 times in eight games prior to Thursday. Oh, and they were penalized nine times in the first half alone. --Todd Archer

The Giants kept it close against the Cowboys, but they still didn't come away with a win. After last season, when the Giants were outscored 89-17 in their two meetings with the Cowboys, this has to be viewed as progress, right?

Sure there are no moral victories in the NFL, but this was the third straight step in the right direction for the Giants (1-3) after an ugly opener.

The gap, at least to some degree, has narrowed between the division rivals. Dallas still owns the Giants. It has won 14 of the past 15 matchups, and Prescott has beaten them 13 straight times. New York still isn't quite there yet, but this proved its at least improving.

QB breakdown: Jones was efficient, completing 29 of 40 passes (73% completion) for 281 yards with an interception on a Hail Mary in the finals seconds. But the Giants were kept out of the end zone and Jones was short on most of his deep throws. It's especially notable considering this was a problem early in training camp. There was a lot of good for Jones, but it was not quite enough. Jones is clearly playing better since the opener. Having rookie wide receiver Malik Nabers (12 catches for 115 yards) certainly helps.

Eye-popping stat: Nabers keeps adding to his records. He became the first player in NFL history with at least 25 receptions and three touchdowns in his first four career games when he caught a 3-yard pass early in the second quarter. He now has 35 receptions for 386 yards and three touchdowns in four games.

Troubling trend: Giants top cornerback Deonte Banks has been the nearest defender on four touchdown passes already this season, according to NFL Next Gen Stats. Banks was beat again on Thursday night, this time by Lamb for a 55-yard score in the second quarter. The Giants were hoping Banks would step into the CB1 role this season. Instead, it has been a struggle so far.

Biggest hole in the game plan: The Giants weren't able to get anything going in the running game against the league's worst run defense. Dallas came into the contest allowing 185.7 yards on the ground per contest. The Giants came into the game thinking they would have success, but had only 29 yards rushing in the first half -- and they finished with 26 yards on 24 carries. -- Jordan Raanan

MIKE TYSON FIGHT WITH JAKE PAUL POSTPONED AFTER TYSON'S HEALTH EPISODE

Mike Tyson’s fight with Jake Paul has been postponed after the 57-year-old Tyson fell ill on a flight last weekend.

Tyson and Paul said Friday that they will announce a new fight date next week. They were scheduled to meet on 20 July in Arlington, Texas.

Tyson became nauseous and dizzy during the final hour of a flight from Miami to Los Angeles last Sunday, and his plane was met by first responders who attended to the former heavyweight champion. Tyson’s camp attributed the episode to an ulcer problem.

 “During a follow up consultation on Thursday with medical professionals on his recent ulcer flare-up, the recommendation is for Mike Tyson to do minimal to light training over the next few weeks and then return to full training with no limitations,” the fight’s promoters said in a statement.

Tyson hasn’t fought professionally since June 2005, but he has been training regularly for several years. He fought Roy Jones Jr in an entertaining exhibition in Los Angeles in November 2020.

“My body is in better overall shape than it has been since the 1990s, and I will be back to my full training schedule soon,” Tyson said in the statement. “Jake Paul, this may have bought you some time, but in the end you will still be knocked out and out of boxing for good. I appreciate everyone’s patience and can’t wait to deliver an unforgettable performance later this year.”

Texas boxing officials have sanctioned Tyson’s meeting with Paul as a legitimate bout with eight two-minute rounds and unusually heavy gloves. Tyson will turn 58 before the fight, which was scheduled to be streamed on Netflix in what’s likely to be a massive payday for both fighters.

Tickets already purchased for the fight, which was to be held at the Dallas Cowboys’ home stadium, will be honored on the new fight date, promoters said. The rescheduled fight is also expected to be in Arlington.

The co-feature bout on the card was an eagerly anticipated rematch between Katie Taylor and Amanda Serrano for Taylor’s undisputed junior welterweight championship, a rematch of their epochal May 2022 fight at Madison Square Garden.

Representatives for Paul’s Most Valuable Promotions, which is promoting the card, did not immediately respond to a message from the Guardian inquiring about the status of the Taylor-Serrano fight in light of the Tyson-Paul postponement.

The 27-year-old Paul is a YouTube star who has forged a successful prizefighting career mostly by taking on mixed martial artists and journeymen boxers.

“I fully support postponing the event so Mike Tyson has no excuses come fight night,” Paul said. “My fans know I don’t want to face Iron Mike at anything but his best, but let there be no mistake: When he steps into the ring with me, I will be ready to claim my W with a sensational finish.”

DOLPHINS TOP COWBOYS, SECURE PLAYOFF SPOT ON-LAST SECOND FIELD GOAL

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. -- Jason Sanders kicked his fifth field goal of the game, a 29-yarder as time expired, and the Miami Dolphins secured a playoff berth with a 22-20 victory over the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday.

Tua Tagovailoa threw for 293 yards and a touchdown for the AFC East-leading Dolphins (11-4), who beat a team with a winning record for the first time this season. He connected with Tyreek Hill twice on the decisive drive, which covered 64 yards and took the final 3:27 off the clock.

Hill, who leads the NFL in receiving yards, had nine catches for 99 yards after missing last week's victory over the New York Jets with an ankle injury.

Dak Prescott went 20-of-32 for 253 yards and two touchdowns for the Cowboys (10-5), who have already clinched a playoff spot but fell a half-game behind Philadelphia in the NFC East.

Prescott put Dallas in front 20-19 with an 8-yard touchdown pass to a leaping Brandin Cooks in the corner of the end zone. But the Cowboys were haunted by their red zone struggles earlier in the game, including a fumble by Prescott on first-and-goal from inside the 1 on Dallas' first possession.

Sanders' first field goal was a career-long 57-yarder in the first quarter. He added kicks of 52, 54 and 35 yards to help the Dolphins take a 19-10 lead late in the third.

1. San Francisco 49ers (11-3)

Week 15 ranking: 1

We're No. 1 ... in point differential.

The Niners lead the NFL in plenty of important categories, but nothing matters more than the score. San Francisco is plus-191 on the year, 24 points clear of Dallas, which ranks second. What's more, the 49ers haven't just been beating up on the dregs of the NFL. They've beaten contenders like the Cowboys, Eagles and Jaguars by a combined 86 points. Were it not for a meaningless last-second field goal by the Rams in Week 2, all of the Niners' 11 wins would be by double digits. -- Nick Wagoner

2. Baltimore Ravens (11-3)

Week 15 ranking: 3

We're No. 1 ... at running the ball.

The Ravens lead the NFL in rushing, and it's not even close. Behind quarterback Lamar Jackson's elusive scrambles, Baltimore is averaging 163.8 yards per game on the ground, which is at least 22 yards more per game than the rest of the league. It's impressive that the Ravens have been so dominant in running the ball, because they lost featured back J.K. Dobbins to a torn Achilles in the season opener. To compound matters, Baltimore will now be without its most explosive running back in Keaton Mitchell, who suffered a season-ending knee injury Sunday night. -- Jamison Hensley

3. Dallas Cowboys (10-4)

Week 15 ranking: 2

We're No. 1 ... in non-offensive touchdowns.

This is what happens when somebody sets an NFL record, like Cowboys cornerback DaRon Bland has by scoring five touchdowns on interceptions this season. But Bland isn't the only one in on the act. Leighton Vander Esch returned a fumble for a touchdown and Noah Igbinoghene returned a blocked field goal for a touchdown. The Cowboys have seven on the season, followed by Indianapolis (five) and Miami (four). -- Todd Archer

The San Francisco 49ers have been the top dog in the NFC this season, and they are now the first team to secure an NFL Playoff berth.

The 49ers win over the Seattle Seahawks 28-16 on Sunday and the the Green Bay Packers loss to the New York Giants on Monday night locked in San Francisco's spot in the playoffs.

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Big 12 Commissioner Brett Yormark said his still-evolving conference remains committed to having a championship game even as the College Football Playoff expands from four to 12 teams after this season.

“This is a tentpole event. Everything leads up to this moment, it creates a wonderful narrative for this conference. It’s a showcase event, and something I’m committed to,” Yormark said before Saturday's title game. “I know there’s been a lot of discussion amongst the commissioners about what that might look like, but as it relates to the Big 12, we love this game. We love being at AT&T (Stadium). ... It lets the world know who we are and where we’re going.”
