WHO IS THE REFEREE FOR THE CHAMPIONS LEAGUE FINAL?
INDOMITABLE SINNER OBLITERATES LEHECKA TO REACH FRENCH OPEN FOURTH ROUND
![]() |
| Reuters |
PARIS - World number one Jannik Sinner delivered a flawless performance to pulverise Czech Jiri Lehecka 6-0 6-1 6-2 in little more than 90 minutes on Saturday, to burst into the French Open fourth round and issue a ominous warning to other title contenders.
The 23-year-old Italian, who returned to tennis in May after a three-month-doping ban, won the first 11 games in a row, and has so far found no resistance en route to the last 16.
He has yet to drop a set in his second tournament back, after reaching the final in Rome earlier in the month.
"Today I was playing really, really well," Sinner said. "He was serving very well and brave. But I am very happy.
"My coach had (his) birthday yesterday and usually when he has birthday I don't play good. Luckily I was not playing yesterday."
"This morning I said to my team I feel well," he added. "I warmed up feeling really well, trying to go on court with a good focus. My team gave me the right tactics. It is a combination also being happy on court."
Sinner exploded into action, racing through the first set with a bagel in 25 minutes.
The Czech was left stunned, wondering how to counter such power and precision, but before he came up with any answer he was already trailing 3-0 in the second set.
Pinned to the back, Lehecka could only watch how Sinner's shots flew past him, including a sensational baseline forehand winner that earned the Italian a 4-0 advantage.
The 23-year-old world number 34 earned a big cheer when he finally got onto the scoreboard at 5-1 but his ordeal was far from over.
Sinner served out the second set before proceeding to break shell-shocked Lehecka at the very start of the third.
Running his panting opponent ragged, Sinner earned another break and put him out of his misery with his first match point.
The top seed has now stretched his winning streak at Grand Slam events to 17 matches, after winning the titles at the 2024 U.S. Open and the Australian Open in January prior to his doping ban.
He will next face 17th-seed Andrey Rublev, who advanced after his opponent Arthur Fils of France withdrew with a back injury.

JENSON BUTTON THIEF JAILED AFTER £250,000 ROBBERY

A man who stole a suitcase containing £250,000 worth of jewellery and designer handbags from Brittny Button, the wife of 2009 World Champion and Sky F1 pundit Jenson Button, has been jailed.
Mourad Aid, 41, snatched Mrs Button’s bag outside St Pancras station in London in February after the couple had returned from a city break in Paris.
Thief jailed after robbery of Jenson Button’s wife
Aid, pounced when Mr Button, had his back turned while helping a chauffeur load their belongings into a car.
CCTV footage showed Aid taking a Goyard case containing jewellery from her wedding and heirlooms she had intended to pass to her daughter, as well as two Kelly handbags worth around £70,000, on February 13.
Aid was arrested by plain-clothed police officers on February 17, four days after stealing the case, and pleaded guilty to theft at Westminster Magistrates’ Court two days later on February 19.
None of Mrs Button’s goods, totalling £383,037.92, have been recovered.
The Algerian also pleaded guilty to handling stolen goods following the theft of a Rimowa cabin suitcase belonging to James Humphrey Evans in November last year.
Aid has been sentenced to two years and four months in prison for the two offences.
It emerged during the case that Aid was in the United Kingdom illegally, having stayed in Britain after his six-month tourist visa had expired in 2019.
He had also been violating his bail conditions, which barred him from King’s Cross Station, on the day of his robbery of Mr and Mrs Button.
Aid will be deported back to Algeria when his sentence has been completed.
In a victim statement on Friday, Mrs Button said that the incident had “stripped away her sense of safety, security and peace of mind.”
She also posted a meme via Instagram’s story function, which allows images and video clips to be posted for a 24-hour period, following the sentencing on Friday.
The meme read: “Being nice is overrated. Just find a good lawyer and choose violence.”
As previously reported by PlanetF1.com last month, Mrs Button revealed that she and her husband, who reside in the United States, have “no interest” in returning to the UK after the robbery.
She told the Mail: “I was kind of shocked. How like unsecure everything felt [in London], just so many people, so chaotic.
“I thought: ‘Should I have brought my carry-on back here with me?’ Because Jenson can be a little bit like not super careful, too trusting and a little too relaxed.
“He had his back on mine and a guy just came and swooped it. We didn’t even see him do it, so they were probably watching us.
“We had no idea until Jenson went: ‘Wait where is your bag?’ And he raced off trying to find it, but he [the thief] was already gone.
“I just started crying, I was a little upset with Jenson because I felt like he kind of dropped the ball a little but its not his fault someone was watching us.
“He also did get his bag stolen a few months ago in a car park in London.
“It definitely was shocking that I just didn’t think.
“I’m normally pretty cautious when I’m out in public and travelling, but I just didn’t think that there were gangs literally just waiting for people and watching.
“I’ve heard countless stories. When we first started dating we would go to London, and it was such like a nice place to be, and now it just feels very kind of dark and scary.
“My husband and I, we really have no interest going back to the UK and it’s a shame, because we will have to go back for family and work.
“It just feels so unsafe and doesn’t feel how it once was and it’s just unfortunate because that’s where my children’s grandmother and aunts live.”

A CHALLENGING OUTING IN SHANGHAI FOR MASERATI MSG RACING
The Shanghai E-Prix brought a return to permanent circuit racing, switching the focus firmly back onto energy management. Maserati MSG Racing started the day strong and with promise but were unable to convert their race strategy to points at the chequered flag due to failures with Pit Boost.
Both practice sessions showed the potential of the Maserati Tipo Folgore, with Jake Hughes and Stoffel Vandoorne finding the pace around the Shanghai International Circuit. Albeit qualifying not generating a duels appearance, both Jake and Stoffel made a step forward to start higher up the grid compared to recent races. Jake was unlucky to miss out on a duels appearance by hundredths of a second, settling for ninth on the grid.
Both drivers made a good start, managing the first few corners well to retain position. Stoffel was on an early Attack Mode strategy, taking his first four minutes in the early stages of the race. Starting higher up, Jake focused on getting track position before looking to take his first Attack.
Following suit from Tokyo, Stoffel was one of the first into the pit lane for his Pit Boost. The top twelve, including Jake, left their Pit Boost until the second wave towards the end of the Pit Boost window. Unfortunately, it was at this point the race got away from the team as both cars suffered a Pit Boost charger failure.
Maserati MSG Racing did everything they could to regain the lost positions, but energy consumption became critical. Jake and Stoffel took their last Attack Modes in the final few laps of the race, managing to climb up the grid, but there wasn’t quite enough time left in the race for either of them to get back in the points.
Tomorrow sees the second Shanghai E-Prix, where Maserati MSG Racing will take the learnings from today to make steps forwards. The absence of Pit Boost will shift the race strategy on Sunday, and the team will focus on improving on their energy and tyre management to be in the fight for the race podium.
In Their Words
Jake Hughes, Driver, Maserati MSG Racing: “In the end, what was looking like a very strong and positive day has ended on a flat note. We looked very quick through both free practice sessions, but when we came to qualifying, we had a similar issue to what we’ve been having lately with the new tyres and just couldn’t make the most of the grip. We qualified ninth which was better than lately, but I really feel like we had the car to challenge for more today. The race was looking very strong; I was leading at one point, cycling through the top three. There were some things that weren’t perfect in the race, but the main thing was we had a Pit Boost failure for the second race in a row. That put us at the back of the pack, and we went all in on getting up the grid, leading to us running out of energy on the last lap. When you’re put in this position with the pit stop, you have nothing to lose, but we do need to understand why this happened because it’s cost us today.”
Stoffel Vandoorne, Driver, Maserati MSG Racing: “That was a difficult race. We were going pretty good after the start; took attack mode early, got to the lead of the race after a couple of laps, positioned ourselves in the right group before the Pit Boost. Unfortunately, it was the Pit Boost where it went wrong for us. We had an issue with the charger and we lost a good number of seconds. This dropped us to last, into no man’s land, and we had to completely change the strategy and approach. It was difficult to be efficient because we were alone on track and couldn’t benefit from the slip stream. I took the second Attack Mode late to try and recover some positions, finishing just outside of the points. Looking at it, we were only a couple of seconds from the podium, but the six seconds lost in the Pit Boost ultimately cost us points today.”
Cyril Blais, Team Principal, Maserati MSG Racing: “Disappointing day today overall, especially the race. We had a decent strategy for both cars, tried to push forward from qualifying. I think we were in the mix to score points with both cars, targeting top six finish, but unfortunately, we had an issue on both cars in the Pit Boost which cost us. After that it was a little bit difficult to climb back into the points. We tried our best but couldn’t do better than the edge of the points. Not our day today, but I think the potential is there which is a positive. We need to do better. Now we have our heads down and full focus on bringing home points from the race tomorrow.”
Maria Conti, Head of Maserati Corse: “We knew that the Shanghai double-header would be challenging. Racing in China, where Formula E took its first steps, still produces very intense feelings. The team are taking home from today's race a series of important lessons that make us even more aware, united and focused towards our goals for the season. With Maserati's centenary celebrations in racing on the horizon, we believe that the Shanghai double-header is an opportunity to enrich our racing history and connect with a new generation of motorsport fans. We will do our best tomorrow when we’ll be getting back on the starting grid to battle to be one of the best and to write another important chapter in the history – almost a century of it – of Maserati in racing all over the world.”
GIRO D'ITALIA: BRITAIN'S SIMON YATES WINS TITLE FOR FIRST TIME AFTER STUNNING PENULTIMATE STAGE
Great Britain's Simon Yates reels in Giro d'Italia leader Isaac del Toro in penultimate stage to secure victory in this event for first time; Yates, 32, had previously won the Vuelta a Espana in 2018; he will be crowned champion after Sunday's processional stage in Rome
Britain's Simon Yates rode a stunning final stage of the Giro d'Italia to snatch the pink jersey from Isaac Del Toro and secure his second Grand Tour title.
Yates - who won the Vuelta a Espana seven years ago - finished third in Saturday's stage, behind Chris Harper and Alessandro Verre, but erased Del Toro's overall lead with a clinical solo attack.
Del Toro's advantage was 81 seconds ahead of the 205km ride from Verres to Sestriere, where riders gained 4,500 metres in altitude, but Yates stormed ahead on the climb.
The Briton's lead over Del Toro at the end of the stage was close to four minutes and he will now be crowned champion at the end of Sunday's processional ride in Rome.
Yates' hopes of winning the 2018 Giro were shattered on the same mountain pass he clinched victory on this year - the Colle delle Finestre - following a breakaway from Chris Froome.
The 32-year-old has now put those demons to bed, denying Mexican rider Del Toro, 21, the title in his maiden Giro.
Yates is the third Brit to won the Giro, after Froome and Tao Geoghegan Hart.

PIASTRI BEATS "CHEEKY" NORRIS FOR POLE AS VERSTAPPEN AND RUSSELL ARE TIRED
2025 Spanish Grand Prix qualifying report
Lando Norris was quickest after the first runs in Q3 but his team mate hit back to claim pole position for the Spanish Grand Prix.
Oscar Piastri led a McLaren one-two while Max Verstappen and George Russell set identical times and will share the second row of the grid.
It was a miserable and short session for Verstappen’s team mate, however. Yuki Tsunoda will start from last place.
Q1
Piastri signalled McLaren’s pace with his first run in qualifying. He produced a 1’12.551, just over a tenth of a second slower than he went in final practice.
Max Verstappen was the last driver to set their first time in Q1, and he took advantage of the track grip improving to nick second place off Lando Norris by one thousandth of a second. George Russell was another seven-thousandths behind in fourth.
Franco Colapinto looked on course to grab a place in Q2, sitting in 11th place after his first run, two places ahead of team mate Pierre Gasly. However while queueing to leave the pits his car slowed and refused to pull away. Those waiting behind him started to pick their way past the Alpine, which the driver eventually pulled over to one side at the pit lane exit.
Despite that disruption, the remaining drivers were still able to join the track and, in some cases, take advantage of the steadily improving conditions to secure passage into Q2. Colapinto’s name steadily dropped down the timing sheets into the drop zone – but he didn’t quite hit the bottom.
That was because Yuki Tsunoda was still having a tough time in the Red Bull. On Friday he’d been mystified by his inability to get closer to Verstappen’s times. From his first lap in qualifying he was off the pace, and afterwards told his team he suspected his floor was damaged. He improved his time on his final run but it wasn’t good enough to lift him up from last place.
A delighted Oliver Bearman reached Q2 while his team mate went no further. Nico Hulkenberg fell narrowly short of beating Isack Hadjar to the last place in Q2. Carlos Sainz Jnr suffered a disappointing qualifying session at home, dropping out in Q1.
Q2
Piastri remained on top after the first runs in Q2, but his team mate ran him closer. Norris produced a 1’12.056 but Piastri became the first driver to break into the 1’11s, pipping him by less than a tenth of a second.
Verstappen remained their closest threat, albeit three tenths of a second off Piastri. The next four cars were threateningly close behind, however: just two tenths covered Vertappen, Russell, Hamilton, Leclerc and Alonso.
Russell offered to assist Antonelli with a slipstream in order to help him reach Q3. Both Mercedes drivers duly made it through, joining the McLarens, Ferraris and Verstappen. Alonso ensured the home crowd had one representative in the top 10 on the grid but his team mate went no further.
An unimpressed Alexander Albon accused Haas of “dirty” tactics after encountering Oliver Bearman in the final sector. He was 11th after his final run, missing the cut by three-hundredths of a second, as Pierre Gasly claimed the final place in Q3.
A strong lap from Gabriel Bortoleto put him 12th on the grid behind the Williams. However Liam Lawson was unable to match Isack Hadjar, who was the only Racing Bulls driver to reach the final 10.
Q3
As Russell observed in Q2, the advantage of gaining a slipstream down the straight was significant. Norris positioned himself to take advantage of it, leaving the pits after Piastri and waiting for him on the outside of turn 12.
While Piastri accelerated to the line to finish his lap, Norris tucked in behind him to pick up a slipstream. “Cheeky,” remarked Piastri. The tactic appeared to pay off: Norris beat Piastri’s time in the first sector and despite losing time in the second pinched provisional pole position off him by a hundredth of a second.
Russell and Leclerc relegated Verstappen to fifth with their first runs. However the Mercedes driver was unhappy with the team’s tactics, saying they had needlessly thrown two tenths of a second away.
Before the final runs, Alonso took advantage of the opportunity to set a clear lap and went fifth-fastest. Verstappen therefore began his final run having slipped to sixth place.
Piastri and Verstappen had the last laughs after their final runs, however. Norris was first of the McLaren drivers to set a time, and chipped a few hundredths off his mark, but Piastri lopped two tenths of a second off that to capture pole position.
Verstappen rebounded on his last run as well, claiming third place with a 1’11.848. Russell then matched that to within a thousandth of a second, putting him fourth.
Those improvements relegated Hamilton to fifth place ahead of Antonelli. Leclerc took seventh, while Alonso saw his initial fifth place translate to 10th on the grid after Gasly and Hadjar also beat it.

EDINBURGH FALLS SHORT IN SOUTH AFRICA AS BULLS PROGRESS TO URC SEMI-FINAL
The Bulls stepped it up early in the second half
The Bulls claimed a 42-33 victory over Edinburgh in an exhilarating United Rugby Championship quarter-final at Loftus Versfeld.
Wes Goosen opened the scoring after five minutes before Ross Thompson's double came either side of Cameron Hanekom's try for the South Africans.
Tries from David Kriel in the 32nd minute and Harold Vorster four minutes later ensured the Bulls went into the break only 21-18 behind.
The Bulls stepped it up early in the second half as Canan Moodie showed a great turn of pace to crash over as Edinburgh's defence had lost control.
Keaqgan Johannes and Ruan Nortje went over to make it 39-21 and although Edinburgh responded with efforts from Ewan Ashman and Goosen, the game was up.

RANGERS: SAN FRANCISCO 49ERS OWNERS ANDREW CAVENAGH COMPLETE TAKEOVER
A U.S. consortium, led by the owners of the San Francisco 49ers and health care tycoon Andrew Cavenagh, has completed its takeover of Scottish football giants Rangers, the club confirmed on Friday.
The group of investors has acquired a 51% controlling stake of the club and Rangers said the new vision for the future prioritizes "on-pitch performance" and "long-term financial sustainability."
The club added in a statement that the new leadership has already invested £20 million ($27m).
49ers Enterprises, the NFL team's investment business, already owns Leeds United, who recently secured promotion to the English Premier League after winning this season's Championship title.

Cavenagh will lead the consortium and has been appointed chairman, while Paraag Marathe -- the 49ers Enterprises president -- will take up the role of vice chairman.
This club's history and traditions speak for themselves, but history doesn't win matches," Cavenagh said. "Our focus is simple: elevate performance, deliver results and bring Rangers back to where it belongs -- at the top."
Rangers have won 55 league titles in Scotland, but this year their tally was matched by archrivals Celtic, who also play in Glasgow. Rangers have failed to win a title since 2021, while Celtic have won 13 of the past 14 league titles.

SPANISH MEDIA INEVITABLY SAY REAL MADRID AREN'T PAYING €10M TO LIVERPOOL FOR TRENT ALEXANDER-ARNOLD
![]() |
| Trent Alexander-Arnold will join Real Madrid after two decades at Liverpool (AP Photo) |
Real Madrid’s agreement to sign Trent Alexander-Arnold early from Liverpool is worth an initial €5m and he will join on June 1st.
That’s according to El Mundo, who report that Liverpool and Real Madrid have reached an economic agreement for the full-back so he can play for the Spanish giants in the Club World Cup.
Alexander-Arnold already had an agreement with Real Madrid on a six-year deal running until June 2031, but they needed to pay Liverpool to sign him early.
Reports in England have stated this figure will be €10m but Spanish broadsheet EL Mundo state that Madrid will instead pay €5m. That includes the final month of Alexander-Arnold’s contract at Liverpool.
There is no mention of potential bonuses, with reports elsewhere stating Real Madrid were paying these alongside his final month of wages.
Either way, as far as the Spanish newspaper is concerned, Real Madrid are paying half of what the English media have said they will be paying. We’ll allow you to decide who to believe. There was always going to be a disagreement, hence Madrid nor Liverpool reporting the fee.
Alexander-Arnold becomes Madrid’s second signing this summer, following the deal to sign Dean Huijsen from Bournemouth earlier this month.

AC MILAN SACK BOSS SERGIO CONCEICAO AS ITALIAN GIANTS PART WAY WITH THIRD MANAGER IN 12 MONTHS - LEAVING THE FUTURES OF FOUR ENGLAND STARS UP IN THE AIR
- AC Milan have parted ways with Sergio Conceicao after just six months together
- Four England stars could be on the way out after Milan's latest managerial switch
AC Milan have sacked manager Sergio Conceicao, as per an official club statement, following an under-whelming Serie A campaign.
The Portuguese tactician took over from fellow countryman Paulo Fonseca at the end of December - with the club in eighth place. But after a tumultuous six months, Milan's league position did not budge under Conceicao.
The former Porto boss becomes the third manager to leave the Italian heavyweights in 12 months.
Despite being Serie A runners-up in 2023-24, former head coach Stefano Pioli departed at the end of the season. He was replaced by Fonseca, who was fired before Conceicao took charge.
During his time with the Rossoneri, Conceicao won 16 of his 30 games - a 53 per cent win rate. He also led the club to their 50th major trophy in its history, winning the Italian Super Cup against local rivals Inter Milan in January.
An official club statement announcing Conceicao's departure read: 'AC Milan and Sergio Conceicao will not continue their journey together next season.
'The Club would like to thank Sergio and his staff for their commitment, professionalism and dedication shown during their time leading the First Team over the past few months.
'The AC Milan family parts with the coach who won the 50th trophy in the Club's history, wishing him the best for the future.'
With Conceicao leaving Milan, England stars Fikayo Tomori and Ruben Loftus-Cheek could follow their manager out the door.
![]() |
| Mail Sport understands Fikayo Tomori could follow his manager out the door, with Tottenham interested in the defender |
![]() |
| Also on loan, former Chelsea star Tammy Abraham is expected to return to Roma this summer |
![]() |
| Fellow Blues academy graduate Ruben Loftus-Cheek could also leave, as per reports in Italy |
Mail Sport reported this week that Tottenham are targeting Tomori, and like him for his pace, mobility and tenacity.
The centre back is seen as a cheaper alternative to their primary target - Crystal Palace's Marc Guehi.
Meanwhile, reports in Italy have stated that Loftus-Cheek's future at Milan is up in the air, and has been since last summer.
The former Chelsea midfield left London for Milan in 2023, with his contract running through June 2027.
Conceicao's exit will also do little to boost any hopes of Kyle Walker remaining at Milan beyond this season.
![]() |
| Loanee Kyle Walker is not expected to join Milan permanently and is likely to return to Man City |
The defender joined the club on loan from Manchester City in January and, although his deal includes an option to buy of just £4.2million, multiple reports have claimed Milan do not want to sign him permanently.
The 35-year-old featured 16 times in all competitions for the club and was included in Thomas Tuchel's inaugural England squad for the Three Lions' World Cup qualifiers in March.
Fellow loanee Tammy Abraham is also expected to call time on his spell with the Rossoneri this summer.
Reports in Italy have stated the former Chelsea star is expected to return to parent club Roma after scoring just five goals in as many months for Milan.

Jorge Martin Shocks Racing World with Abrupt Departure from Aprilia!
In a stunning turn of events, Jorge Martin, the 2024 MotoGP World Champion, has announced his departure from Aprilia Racing at the conclusion of the 2025 MotoGP World Championship. This bombshell revelation comes after a tumultuous period marked by a series of injuries for the talented rider, including fractures to his ribs, ankles, and wrists during his time with the Italian manufacturer.
Martin’s decision to part ways with Aprilia stems from what he describes as unmet “certain circumstances” outlined in his contract. In a candid statement shared on social media, Martin clarified his position, emphasizing that he had not violated any terms of the agreement but rather opted to exercise his contractual right to determine his future beyond the 2025 season.
The departure announcement sent shockwaves through the racing community, with Martin expressing his gratitude to fans, media, and supporters while articulating his desire to seize control of his professional destiny. Despite the challenges faced due to injuries and unforeseen circumstances, Martin maintained a respectful and transparent approach in his communications with Aprilia, underscoring his commitment to upholding the integrity of their initial agreement.
As the racing world reels from this unexpected development, Martin’s decision to part ways with Aprilia underscores the complexities and uncertainties that can define the high-stakes world of MotoGP. With the 2025 season now poised to be Martin’s swan song with the team, the countdown begins to see where the esteemed rider’s future in the fiercely competitive world of motorcycle racing will lead.
The shocking announcement from Jorge Martin serves as a stark reminder of the volatile nature of professional sports and the unwavering determination of athletes to navigate challenges while striving for excellence both on and off the track.

FIA TO TRIAL NEW SKID BLOCK DESIGN DURING F1 SPANISH GP WEEKEND
Formula 1 teams will run a revised skid block at the 2025 Spanish Grand Prix as the FIA looks to address safety concerns after sparks ignited grass fires in Japan.
Back in April, the governing body was forced to call multiple red flags in the Free Practice sessions at Suzuka, as the standard titanium skid blocks ignited the dry grass that surrounded the track.
With teams being able to run its cars closer to the ground this season, adding to the number of sparks created, the FIA has felt the need to step in and prevent further issues in 2025.
A proposed switch to steel skid blocks has been tabled, with tests set to begin this weekend.
The idea is that steel does not reach the high temperatures that titanium does; therefore, it is less likely to cause fires when sparks land on the surrounding grass.
Circuits like Silverstone, the Red Bull Ring and Circuit Gilles Villeneuve are among the venues where the proposed steel skid blocks could be introduced if the trial proves successful.
The following countries would continue to use titanium: Azerbaijan, Singapore, Las Vegas, Qatar and Abu Dhabi.
The proposed change, introduced at the recent F1 Commission meeting, was met with little enthusiasm and widespread resistance.
Concerns over added weight and accelerated skid block wear have fueled doubts about the effectiveness of the proposed technical change.
If approved, it could force teams to raise the ride height, which could significantly impact the course of both championships.
Despite proposals to spray grass with water or fire retardant at certain venues, the FIA remains determined to proceed with its skid block trials, scheduled for Friday’s practice sessions.
With a detailed plan still to be unveiled, it’s expected that one car per team will run the steel skid blocks, with the results determining whether the governing body makes them mandatory going forward.

SUMO WRESTLING GETS ITS FIRST JAPANESE GRAND CHAMPION IN 7 YEARS AS 24-YEAR-OLD ONOSATO REACHES TOP RANK
Tokyo — Japan has a new sumo grand champion — or yokozuna — and the big news is he's Japanese. Onosato, the new grand champion, weighs 421 pounds and he is the first Japanese competitor to reach the top rank since 2017. By comparison, the average weight of an NFL lineman is just over 300 pounds.
The sport has recently been dominated by Mongolians. Prior to Onosato, six of the previous seven yokozunas have been from Mongolia.
"I'll devote myself to training so that I will not disgrace the title of yokozuna," Onosato said Wednesday, dressed in a formal kimono and bowing as he sat on the floor. "I will aim to become a one-and-only yokozuna."
Onosato, whose real name is Daiki Nakamura, is only 24 and was promoted Wednesday to sumo's top rank by the Japan Sumo Association. Onosato was promoted by winning last week's Summer Grand Sumo Tournament, which came after he won another prestigious tournament in March.
Onosato is from Ishikawa prefecture, which was hit on Jan. 1, 2024, by a devastating earthquake and tsunami that killed about 600 people in the prefecture and caused widespread damage. Much of the destruction was centered on an area known as the Noto Peninsula.
"I will work hard as a yokozuna to encourage and cheer up the Ishikawa prefecture and the Noto region," he said.
He then added: "I determined that yokozuna should be my goal once I entered the world of sumo," he said. "It's not easy to achieve and I'm really delighted."

Sumo is regarded as Japan's national sport, or most sacred sport, and many of the ritual elements are connected to Shinto, Japan's indigenous religion.
Sumo's origins date back more than 1,000 years, and Japan is the only country where it is contested on a professional level, though competitors come from around the world.
Last year the sumo world lost one of its contemporary greats, Hawaii-born Akebono, who died at the age of 54. The American was the first foreign-born wrestler to reach the level of yokozuna.
The sport is highly regimented with many wrestlers living in communal training facilities where food and dress are controlled by ancient traditions.

Onosato's promotion will set up an instant rivalry with Mongolia-born Hoshoryu, who is the other wrestler in Japan to hold the yokozuna title.
The Japanese news agency Kyodo said the two sumo stars are due to meet in a tournament in July in the central city of Nagoya.

EGYPT'S AL-AHLY WINS A RECORD 45TH TITLE
Egypt’s Al Ahly earn record-extending 45th league title
The recent crowning of Al Ahly as the Egyptian Premier League Champions has sparked considerable controversy, particularly due to their refusal to play a scheduled match against fierce rivals Zamalek FC. This situation raises significant questions, particularly when examined through the lens of FIFA and IFAB regulations regarding the honoring of league fixtures.
Background of the Controversy
Al Ahly secured their 45th league title after a resounding 6-0 victory over Pharco, finishing the season with 58 points. However, their championship is clouded by allegations of unfair play, especially regarding their failure to compete against Zamalek. Initially, they faced a three-point deduction for not fulfilling their fixture, but this sanction was rescinded following their appeal to the local Olympic Committee. Pyramids FC, who finished just two points behind Al Ahly, have since taken up the issue, appealing to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) to have those three points deducted and awarded to them.
FIFA and IFAB Regulations
According to FIFA and IFAB rules concerning match scheduling and participation, clubs are expected to honor their commitments to play league matches unless there is a legitimate and defensible reason for non-participation. In instances where teams fail to show up without justified reasoning, there are typically consequences, including possible point deductions as seen in various leagues globally. The application of these regulations underscores the principle that fixtures must be fulfilled to maintain competition integrity.
Supporting Arguments for a Sanction
1. Consistency in Punishment: By allowing Al Ahly to escape the initial three-point deduction, a precedent is set that undermines the authority of the Egyptian Professional Football Club Association and may lead to calls for inconsistency in future decisions regarding match attendance.
2. Equity in Competition: Applying a deduction to Al Ahly would right an imbalance caused by their non-participation, ensuring that all teams adhere to the same standards and protocols, establishing fairness in competition.
3. Historical Precedence: Leagues around the world enforce point deductions for similar infractions, and applying such a sanction would align the Egyptian league with best practices in football governance.
Recommendation for Sanction
Given these considerations, the most equitable response would be to enforce the initial three-point deduction on Al Ahly for their failure to honor the match against Zamalek. Such a measure not only restores competitive fairness to the standings but also sends a clear message about accountability in league participation.
Impact on Pyramids FC
The ongoing controversy could be a psychological blow to Pyramids FC, especially as they prepare for their maiden CAF Champions League final against Mamelodi Sundowns. Amidst their pursuit of continental glory, the uncertainty surrounding the league title and potential sanctions against Al Ahly may affect their morale and focus.
While they aim to claim their first-ever CAF title, the narrative surrounding the league title could distract their efforts, leading to additional pressure. The psychological toll can be profound, as players and management may find it challenging to compartmentalize their league disappointment from their ambitions on this larger stage.
Conclusion
In conclusion, the controversy over Al Ahly's league title should serve as a clarion call for integrity and adherence to established regulations within the Egyptian Premier League. Upholding the principles set forth by FIFA and IFAB is essential not just for this situation but for the future of football in Egypt. A fair resolution, including the reapplication of the three-point deduction for Al Ahly, would enhance the credibility of the league and support the authenticity of future competitions, including the significant continental tournaments where Pyramids FC is striving for success. Ultimately, the governance of such matters will shape the competitive landscape of Egyptian football, providing the foundation upon which all clubs can strive for excellence.

Carlos Alcaraz has qualified for the third round of the 2025 Roland Garros, although he lost the first set of his tournament to Fabian Marozsan. The former world No. 1 suffered a drop in the second set and allowed the dangerous Hungarian player to get back into the match, but he dominated the other three sets proving that he has a very high level on this surface when he is fully focused.
The young Spanish ace will do everything possible to win his second French Open in a row, after last year's amazing run that had given him a lot of confidence also for the Wimbledon Championships.
Carlitos has a lot of pressure on him in this edition because he is considered by everyone as the top favorite, especially after winning the Masters 1000 in Monte Carlo and Rome in the weeks leading up to the second Major of the season.
Alcaraz's amazing shot
The 4-time Grand Slam champion is aware that he must avoid wasting energy in the first week of the tournament and is also working on this aspect together with all the members of his team. The 22-year-old from Murcia is able to express truly impressive tennis on this surface and he has already shown it during the final of the Rome Masters 1000, in which he defeated his top rival Jannik Sinner in straight sets to win the seventh Masters 1000 of his career.
During the match against Marozsan today, the current world No.2 delighted the crowd with an incredible shot that is set to be among the best of the entire year. In this circumstance, the Spanish star once again showed all his exceptional athleticism and his ability to reach areas of the court impossible for almost any other player.
Alcaraz's run in Paris has just begun, but there are already all the conditions to witness a memorable show. Opponents will have to find new solutions to prevent him from triumphing again in the French capital.

NIGERIA VS. GHANA: SUPER EAGLES' POSSIBLE STARTING XI FOR UNITY CUP OPENER
Ghana vs Nigeria. Unity Cup 2025. There are football fixtures that raise eyebrows, and then there are those that raise blood pressure. Nigeria vs Ghana falls squarely in the latter category.
A rivalry steeped in pride, history and passion, it’s always more than just a friendly match.
And on Wednesday evening at the Gtech Community Stadium in London, Eric Chelle’s Super Eagles will walk out with one mission: beat Ghana, reach the Unity Cup final, and set up a tasty showdown with Jamaica.
It will be only Chelle’s third game in charge of Nigeria since his January appointment, and while it’s early days, there’s a growing sense of identity taking shape under the Franco-Malian tactician.

Ismaila brings pace, hunger and an increasingly mature defensive IQ. The youngster will be eager to ensure that the absence of Ola Aina and Bright Osayi-Samuel is not heavily felt.
In the heart of defence, Semi Ajayi returns – clubless but trusted – and likely pairs with Igho Ogbu, who is yet to make his debut but impressed Chelle enough in camp to be rated ahead of Rangers lad Ifeanyi Onyebuchi.

Ogbu has quietly developed into one of Slavia Prague’s most reliable defenders in the Czech league and offers composure under pressure.
Left-back? That’s Bruno Onyemaechi’s territory. The Olympiacos man combines tactical awareness with attacking verve.
While Felix Agu could eventually challenge him for that role long-term, for now, Onyemaechi’s shirt is safe.

ARSENAL TRANSFER COULD BE COMPLETED TODAY AFTER VERBAL AGREEMENT - MEDICAL COULD HAPPEN TODAY
Real Sociedad midfielder Martin Zubimendi is closing in on a move to Arsenal, where he will sign a long-term contract.
That’s according to AS, who say Real Sociedad have reached a verbal agreement with Arsenal, who will pay the midfielder’s €60m release clause.
They say that Zubimendi’s goodbye from Real Sociedad is very close to being made official, with the Spanish side already having reached a verbal agreement over the transfer.
Arsenal will pay his €60m release clause and he will be their first signing this summer. AS have also learned that Zubimendi has already signed his contract with the Gunners.
He’s now waiting to pass his medical examination in London. That could be carried out in the next few hours. Arsenal are moving quickly to wrap up the deal after Real Madrid had started to show interest once again.
The arrival of Xabi Alonso as their new manager had given them hope that they could convince Zubimendi to move to the Santiago Bernabeu.
But it appears that they have moved too late, with Zubimendi now on the verge of joining Arsenal, with the final details set to be concluded, perhaps even today.
