Top 3 Biggest Boxing Gates of the 21st Century: Mayweather–Pacquiao, Mayweather–McGregor, and Canelo–Crawford
Manny Pacquiao made a triumphant return to the boxing ring.
Even if it didn’t end in victory.
Fighting for the first time in nearly four years, the 46-year-old Pacquiao and 30-year-old Mario Barrios fought to a majority draw. The judges scored the welterweight bout 115-113 (in favor of Barrios), 114-114, 114-114 and Barrios retained his WBC welterweight title.

The crowd booed, but Pacquiao called it a "wonderful" fight. It was an inspired performance from Pacquiao against a fighter 16 years younger than him.
"I thought I won the fight. I mean, it’s close fight," Pacquiao said. "My opponent very tough. … Wonderful fight.’’
Barrios said he thought he “pulled (the fight) out. But I still tip my hat to Manny. It was an honor to share the ring with him.’’
Barrios said he was surprised by Pacquiao’s stamina at age 46.
“It was crazy. His stamina. He could still crack. He’s still strong as hell. And, you know, his timing is real and everything. He was still a very awkward fighter to try to figure out.’’
Pacquiao had not fought since 2021, when he lost to Yordenis Ugas by unanimous decision.
Pacquiao was asked about his stamina and how he pulled this off at age 46.
“Oh, just work hard. Hard work and then discipline. Everything like that.’’
In the final rounds, Barrios said, his corner was telling him to pick it up and start pressing Pacquiao.
“That was the plan in the first place coming in here, try to make him feel old. But, man, he has such good legs, he has a lot in the tank. And … he still has a lot of fight left in him.’’
Barrios said he would give Pacquiao a rematch after being told by broadcaster Jim Gray that’s what Pacquiao wanted.
“Absolutely,’’ Barrios said.
Asked if he will fight again, Pacquiao said, “I think so. I think so. God willing.’’
The crowd cheered.

Reigning WBC welterweight champion Mario Barrios will welcome the challenge of boxing legend Manny Pacquiao, who will come out of retirement for this championship battle on July 19 inside the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.
Because he’s coming off a four-year hiatus and is already 46 years old, Pacquiao heads into the match as the considerable betting underdog with +225 boxing odds. On the other hand, Barrios, the defending world champion, is going to be the -250 betting favorite.
Manny Pacquiao: +225
Mario Barrios: -250
Tie: +1600
I predict a unanimous decision win for Pacquiao against Barrios because the latter often crumbles under pressure during megafights and title showdowns, much like he did during his matches against Davis and Ramos.
Although Pacquiao is coming off a four-year layoff from professional boxing, he has maintained his shape by competing in various exhibition matches. Furthermore, “Pacman” has the wealth of experience he can use against his much younger opponent.
I expect Pacquiao to go all out in the first six rounds of the match because this is what he did against Thurman before, scoring an early knockdown. That knockdown became crucial in the judges’ scorecards, which helped him secure the split decision win.
As for Barrios, he should weather the early barrage from Pacquiao and turn it up in the tail end of the fight, where Pacquiao would be more vulnerable to counter punches and power shots. Additionally, he should fully utilize his height and reach advantages to keep the challenger at bay while landing his punches and combinations.
Pacquiao is the only eight-division boxing world champion in history, and he has left a lasting legacy due to this historic achievement. Aside from winning world titles across several weight classes, the Filipino icon also scored victories against other boxing royalty.
Included in Pacquiao’s hit list are Erick Morales, Juan Manuel Marquez, Ricky Hatton, Keith Thurman, Miguel Cotto, Shane Mosley, Antonio Margarito, and Oscar De La Hoya. His supposed retirement fight against Yordenis Ugas in August 2021 ended in a unanimous decision defeat.
Barrios is one of the current titleholders in the welterweight division. He made his pro debut in November 2013 and slowly moved up in weight. His first major fight on the grandest stage was against Gervonta Davis in June 2021, but he suffered an 11th-round TKO loss.
Since that loss to Tank, he moved up to the welterweight division and won three of his five bouts, including the WBC interim welterweight title, which was later elevated to the regular champion status. His most recent outing was a disappointment, as his fight with Abel Ramos ended in a split draw.

Manny Pacquiao shocked the boxing world by announcing his comeback from a four-year retirement to battle Mario Barrios for the WBC welterweight championship. The clash, scheduled for July 19, 2025, in Las Vegas, marks a daring move for the 46-year-old icon
Pacquiao, the only eight-division world champion in boxing history, holds a 62-8-2 record with 39 knockouts. His last professional bout, a unanimous decision loss to Yordenis Ugas in August 2021, prompted his retirement a month later.
Barrios, the reigning WBC welterweight king, boasts a 29-2-1 record with 18 knockouts. At 29, he claimed the full belt in May 2024 after Terence Crawford vacated it, following a draw against Abel Ramos in November 2024
ESPN and WBC president Mauricio Sulaiman confirmed the fight, which will stream on PBC’s Prime Video pay-per-view. Sulaiman praised the matchup, noting Pacquiao’s approval by the Nevada State Athletic Commission.
Pacquiao’s career includes victories over Keith Thurman, Oscar De La Hoya, and Miguel Cotto. His 2015 defeat to Floyd Mayweather remains the highest-grossing boxing event, generating over $600 million
Barrios, from San Antonio, recovered from losses to Gervonta Davis and Thurman with three wins and a draw. His unanimous decision over Ugas in 2023 earned him the interim WBC belt.
The bout will likely occur at MGM Grand Garden Arena, as T-Mobile Arena faces scheduling conflicts with Lady Gaga’s tour. Pacquiao won his first major belt at MGM Grand in 2001 against Lehlohonolo Ledwaba.
Pacquiao’s revival aligns with his Senate campaign in the Philippines, with elections set for May 12, 2025. He served as a senator from 2016 to 2022 and seeks to reclaim a seat.
At 46, Pacquiao faces a 17-year age gap with Barrios, raising questions about his ability to compete. Older boxers often struggle with speed and endurance, yet Pacquiao remains confident in his skills.
In July 2024, Pacquiao faced kickboxer Rukiya Anpo in a three-round exhibition, ending in a draw. The taller, younger Anpo tested his reflexes, preparing him for Barrios’ aggressive style.
Pacquiao told ESPN in 2024, “I made history at 40 beating Keith Thurman and I feel at 45, I have a lot left in the game.” His belief fuels his chase for a ninth division belt.
The WBC permits former champions like Pacquiao to request belt shots upon returning. Some criticize this, arguing he’s bypassing contenders like Devin Haney, which frustrates rising boxers.
X posts reflect excitement for Pacquiao’s return, with one user hailing him as a “top 10 boxer” of recent decades. Others express concern that Barrios’ power could overwhelm the aging star.
Pacquiao’s Hall of Fame induction on June 8, 2025, adds weight to his comeback. A victory would make him the oldest welterweight champion, breaking his own record set at 40
Critics, including DAZN, warn Pacquiao risks his legacy and health against a prime Barrios. They highlight his last knockout win in 2018, suggesting a decline in finishing power.
The boxing community eagerly awaits Pacquiao’s next chapter, as he juggles politics and a historic belt pursuit. His showdown with Barrios will test if his talent can outshine time.

LAUSANNE, Switzerland -- The International Olympic Committee will not change its rules to let boxing great Manny Pacquiao compete at the Paris Games aged five years beyond the entry limit.
Pacquiao, who retired in 2021, wanted to box at age 45 in the Olympic tournament in Paris, where medal bouts will be held in the Roland Garros tennis complex.
The IOC said Sunday it wrote to Olympic officials in Philippines explaining the age limit for boxers of 40 will be upheld. The IOC now oversees Olympic boxing after derecognizing the International Boxing Association governing body.
The age limit for Olympic boxing was raised to 40 from 34 in 2013 -- a move that would have let Pacquiao try to compete at the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics. He chose not to at the time when he was also elected to be a senator in his home country.
It is unclear if Pacquiao would have tried to earn a place at the Paris Olympics in one of two qualification tournaments that open later this month in Italy and in May in Thailand.
