MUHAMMAD ALI ON HIS FATHER

'For some strange reason, at least two biographers have written that my father never came to see me fight until I turned professional, which is totally untrue. My father's loud and dramatic encouragement spurred me on. He attended almost every fight I had in Louisville, only missing the ones that were out of town because we couldn't afford the travel expense. One writer of a picture book on my life even said my father beat me throughout my childhood, a claim that had all the Clays in Louisville laughing. My father raised his children like my grandfather had raised him. We were not to be struck by anyone inside the house or outside.'

RUGBY IN AFRICA: MUCH MORE THAN THE SPRINGBOKS

Rugby union in Africa is often only associated with South Africa, but there is much more to rugby on the continent than just the Springboks.

This September, South Africa will look to defend the men's Rugby World Cup title in France. Three World Cup triumphs, including the pivotal victory on home soil in 1995 following the end of Apartheid and as rugby was becoming professional, have cemented their place in the sport's history.

But the Springboks' success has seen them separate from the rest of the continent. As rugby union struggles to keep pace with the ever costlier landscape of global, professional sport, its future in Africa faces a defining four years.

POGACAR, VINGEGAARD SET FOR THRILLING THIRD ACT AMID SAFETY CONCERNS

Reuters

The Tour de France looks set to be a battle between defending champion Jonas Vingegaard and twice winner Tadej Pogacar, but there is a question mark over the Slovenian's form while riders' safety will be scrutinised after the death of Gino Mader.

Pogacar was enjoying a sterling season, winning Paris-Nice and the Tour of Flanders, before breaking his wrist two months ago, leaving the 2020 and 2021 Tour winner fighting to make a full recovery before the Grand Depart in Bilbao on Saturday.

Pogacar's UAE Emirates team has been reinforced with the recruitment of Britain's Adam Yates and Felix Grossschartner - two major additions for the mountain stages.

PRINCE NASEEM'S BROTHER EXPLAINS REASON BEHIND BOXING LEGEND'S HUGE WEIGHT GAIN

The Sun

The former featherweight world champion used to tip the scales at just nine-stone, but now cuts a very different figure when he is seen out and about near his Windsor home.

Prince Naseem Hamed's brother Ali believes his considerable weight gain is due to stress over a £12million family feud.

The former featherweight champion would have to tip the scales at just nine stone during his fighting heyday, but after retiring at the age of just 28 he has cut a very different figure. He has stayed out of the public eye in recent years, but when he was spotted out and about near his new Windsor home he was much heavier than past sightings.

And his brother Ali, a 44-year-old personal trainer in Sheffield, believes that the boxer has been "eating and eating" due to guilt over a bitter legal battle with his family. "His weight is a result of the trauma and stress," Ali told The Sun. "He’s turned in on himself and has just eaten and eaten.

During his boxing prime, Hamed is believed to have given his parents an unknown sum to invest in property, which has appreciated to being worth around £12million. He believes that it was an investment, and as such he is entitled to the money after his mum's passing two years ago.

But his eight siblings argue that it was a gift, and as such it should be split. The family haven't spoken outside of communication since lawyers after a brutal falling out, with his Dubai-based brother Riath leading the charge against him.

Their battle over the nine-figure fortune is expected to play out in a Dubai courtroom, with Ali declaring that his brother has become "greedy" in recent years. “He’s just being greedy," Ali added. "The more you eat in life, the more hungry you are.

The Sheffield-based personal trainer believes that his brother also spent his money too frivolously, adding: “So much of his wealth was p***ed up a wall, including on buying the biggest mango farm in Yemen that is now all dead and dishevelled."

Hamed has remained quiet publicly on the feud, but disputes that he has become some sort of recluse, insisting that he has never been happier and that he is often recognised in public. "I’m the happiest I’ve ever been," he told the Daily Mail last month. "I’ve never been in a better place."

His son Aadam has been working towards a boxing career of his own, aiming to replicate the successes of famous fighting sons such as Chris Eubank Jr, Campbell Hatton and Conor Benn in recent years. The pair were spotted training together back in February, with the 22-year-old often sharing clips on social media.

With the likes of Floyd Mayweather and Ricky Hatton making ring returns for lucrative exhibition bouts, Hamed even floated the idea of a boxing comeback when meeting with YouTube star Slim Albaher in Dubai last year. The social media star, who has gone 3-0 as a boxer, claimed that he was told by the boxing legend that he wanted to come out of retirement after watching him fight.

JUST STOP OIL PROTESTERS HALT SECOND ASHES TEST

Reuters

The first morning of the second Ashes test at Lord's was interrupted when two Just Stop Oil protesters ran on to the ground and scattered orange powder on the outfield, before one was carried off by England wicketkeeper Jonny Bairstow.

After the first over on Wednesday bowled by England's James Anderson to Australia batsman David Warner, the men emerged from the stands and moved towards the square, releasing the powder before being tackled by security staff and players.

Bairstow picked up one of the men and carried him off the field before dropping him to the ground outside the boundary markers.

Ground staff cleared the powder and play resumed after a delay of around five minut

"We are aware of protesters on the Lord’s Cricket Ground pitch today. Police have arrested three people and taken them into custody," the Metropolitan Police said on Twitter.

Just Stop Oil protesters have disrupted other sporting events in England this year, including the Premiership Rugby final and the World Snooker Championship.

PIRLO NAMED COACH AT SAMPDORIA

Reuters

Former AC Milan and Juventus midfielder Andrea Pirlo has been appointed the new coach of Sampdoria on a two-year deal, the Italian Serie B side said on Tuesday.

Pirlo, who won the World Cup as a player with Italy in 2006, had a one-year stint as Juventus coach in 2020-21, after he briefly coached their under-23 team.

Juve sacked Pirlo in May 2021 after he led them to the Coppa Italia and Supercoppa titles but could only help them to fourth place in Serie A.

He was then appointed as manager of Turkey's top-tier side Fatih Karagumruk SK in June 2022.

The 44-year-old was released in May while the club, promoted to the top flight in 2020, finished seventh in the 2022-23 Turkish Super Lig.

BERNAL TO MAKE TOUR DE FRANCE RETURN AFTER INJURY

Reuters

Colombian Egan Bernal will make his return on the Tour de France after a two-year hiatus, his Ineos Grenadiers team said on Monday.

The 2019 champion abandoned the race in 2020, skipped it in 2021 as he won the Giro d'Italia and missed out on the 2022 edition after he sustained serious injuries in a high-speed crash early last year.

"Making my return to the Tour has always been a major goal for me. I'm so excited to be able to experience every kilometre of this race again," Bernal said in a team statement.

"I’m sure many people have followed everything that has happened to me since my accident in January last year, and the journey I’ve been through to overcome the greatest test of my life.

"Being a part of this year’s Tour team reassures me that I’m on my way to returning to my best."

Bernal finished 12th overall in the Criterium du Dauphine, the biggest warm-up stage race before the Tour earlier this month.

Ineos Grenadiers will be led by Britain's Tom Pidcock, with Colombia's Dani Martinez also in a position to ride for the general classification.

The Tour starts in Bilbao, Spain, on Saturday.

WORLD CUP TO BEGIN OCT. 5 | AHMEDABAD HOSTS FINAL

Reuters

The Cricket World Cup will begin on Oct. 5 with England facing New Zealand in Ahmedabad and the same venue hosting the final on Nov. 19, organisers said on Tuesday, with the schedule for the showpiece in India also confirming Pakistan's participation.

The fixtures were revealed by the International Cricket Council during an event in Mumbai, less than four months before the start of the 50-overs tournament, with the delay partly due to sour political relations between India and Pakistan.

India's refusal to travel to Pakistan for the Asia Cup in August-September triggered the latest dispute between the bitter neighbours, who play each other only in multi-team events.

Pakistan responded by threatening to boycott the World Cup if they were not allowed to stage at least some matches of the Asia Cup on home soil.

The stalemate was finally resolved this month when Pakistan agreed to split matches with Sri Lanka, where India will play their Asia Cup matches.

South Asia's arch-rivals meet in the tournament's most anticipated match on Oct. 15 in Ahmedabad's Narendra Modi Stadium - the biggest cricket venue in the world by capacity.

However, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) added a caveat saying they would still need government clearance for any tour to India, including World Cup match venues.

"We are liaising with our government for guidance," PCB Communications Director Sami Ul Hasan said in a statement.

"This position is consistent to what we had told the ICC a couple of weeks ago when they shared with us the draft schedule and sought our feedback."

India begin their campaign on Oct. 8 against five-times champions Australia in Chennai.

England's opener against New Zealand is a rematch of the 2019 final in which England prevailed via a now-scrapped boundary count rule.

Among other key fixtures, 1992 champions Pakistan meet Australia in Bengaluru on Oct. 20, while England take on South Africa the following day in Mumbai.

Australia captain Pat Cummins said he was looking forward to the atmosphere at the match with India in Chennai.

"You know there's going to be big crowds, but no bigger than playing India at home in a World Cup game, so that's going to be exciting for us," he said.

"It will be a huge challenge, they're a top-class team but if you want to win a World Cup you're going to have to be better than everyone else, so why not take on India straight up?"

The first semi-final will take place on Nov. 15 in Mumbai with Kolkata hosting the second the following day. Both games, as well as the final, will be day-night fixtures.

There will be a total of 10 venues for the 10-team tournament - Hyderabad, Ahmedabad, Dharamsala, Delhi, Chennai, Lucknow, Pune, Bengaluru, Mumbai and Kolkata.

Apart from hosts India, the teams that have qualified include Afghanistan, Australia, Bangladesh, England, New Zealand, Pakistan and South Africa.

Two more sides will join them following a qualifying tournament in Zimbabwe, which will conclude on July 9.

Twice winners West Indies have appeared at every tournament since it was first staged in 1975 but defeat by the Netherlands in the qualifying event on Monday leaves their chances hanging by a thread.

ENGLAND & WALES CRICKET BOARD APOLOGISES OVER RACISM & SEXISM

The ECB said it will work alongside representatives from the sport and build a plan of action in the next three months, which will align with the ICEC's 44 recommendations.

PRESIDENTS CUP TO RETURN TO MELBOURNE'S SANDBELT IN 2028

USA TODAY Sports

The Presidents Cup, the biennial team event which pitches the United States against the rest of the world barring Europe, will return to Melbourne for a fourth time in 2028.

The United States team, who have won all but two of the 14 editions of the event, will take on the Internationals at Kingston Heath Golf Club in the Melbourne Sandbelt.

All three previous Presidents Cups in Australia have been at The Royal Melbourne Golf Club some seven kilometres down the road from Kingston Heath in the southeast of the city.

"The Sandbelt region is home to some of the game's most iconic venues, and Kingston Heath has proven to be a world-class host for a number of golf's biggest tournaments," the PGA Tour's Matt Rapp said in a statement.

Next year's Presidents Cup will take place at The Royal Montreal Golf Club in Canada, while the U.S. will host the 2026 edition at Medinah Country Club in Chicago.

Under an agreement with the local tourist board, Melbourne will also host the event in 2040.

The PGA Tour will have a permanent controlling interest in the subsidiary's board of directors, regardless of the Saudi investment, the framework says.
