Ferrari boss Mattia Binotto has admitted that his team is slower than rivals and was not "optimistic" as before during the same time last year...
Ferrari has been hit by reliability issues on Day 3 of testing whereby Sebastian Vettel had to be pulled in after 40 laps in the morning session.
Ferrari was facing a Power Unit (PU) failure. Vettel did manage to finish his 100 laps for the day.
When comparing to rivals like Mercedes who had 494 laps and Red Bull who went for 471 laps Ferrari could not top the time charts on all three days of testing
"I'm not optimistic like last year," said Binotto.
"Some of the others are faster than us at the moment, I believe. How much faster is really difficult to judge and i will go through all the data in the next few days but I don't think we are as fast as them at the moment.
"Do we have any concerns? Certainly, yes, when you are not as fast as you would like to be. But I think it is too early to define it and understand it. These three days have been really important for us, because at least we have collected all the data and have a clear picture and better understanding.
"What will be even more important is to understand that we are developing the car in the right direction but it is a very long session with 22 races potentially so I think there will be time to recover eventually. Let's wait for next week and Australia until we assess properly the true performance of everybody."
Ferrari have claimed from the start of the testing that they will use a different philosophical approach this time during testing.
Binotto summed up the first three days of testing for his team as follows: "We adopted a radically different approach to this first pre-season testing compared to last year's. So far, we have concentrated on evaluating every aspect of the car's potential, running several different configurations, both aero and mechanical, so as to gather much data as possible.
"We will now go home and and analyse it all, comparing it to that gathered in the simulations we ran on the computer and on the actual simulator we have at Maranello.
"In next week's test, we will begin to investigate the performance side, working on set-up and moving forward with the usual tests qualifying and race trim in order to be well prepared for the opening round in Australia."
The second and final pre-season will take place on the 26th of February - 28th of February in Barcelona.
