CRISTIANO RONALDO CLEARED TO PLAY IN FIFA WORLD CUP OPENER

Portugal superstar Cristiano Ronaldo has been cleared to play in the opening matches of FIFA World Cup 2026.

Portugal forward Cristiano Ronaldo was sent off against

Portugal superstar Cristiano Ronaldo can play in the opening matches of FIFA World Cup 2026 after global football governing body FIFA gave him a partially “suspended” ban following a red card.

The 40-year-old was sent off as Portugal lost 2-0 in Dublin earlier in November when he elbowed Dara O’Shea in the back, for his first dismissal in 226 international appearances.

ALREADY BEEN SERVED

FIFA banned Ronaldo for three matches, two of which will be suspended and the other has already been served, when Portugal sealed their qualification for next summer’s tournament against Armenia.

“In line with article 27 of the FIFA Disciplinary Code, the serving of the two remaining matches has been suspended under a one-year probation period,” said FIFA in a statement given to AFP.

“If Cristiano Ronaldo commits another infringement of a similar nature and gravity during the probationary period, the suspension set out in the disciplinary decision shall be deemed automatically revoked and the remaining two matches must be served immediately at the next official (Portugal) matches.”

Ronaldo, the men’s all-time top goalscorer in international football with 143 goals, is aiming to play at a sixth World Cup next summer in the United States, Mexico and Canada.

WHITE HOUSE DINNER

The former Real Madrid and Manchester United striker, currently at Al Nassr in Saudi Arabia, has not yet lifted the trophy but did win Euro 2016 with Portugal.

Ronaldo attended a dinner in the White House last week where he met US President Donald Trump, who said his son Barron “is a big fan” of the forward.

The World Cup group stage draw takes place on December 5.

MOURINHO LAUNCHES 'THE SPECIAL ONE' WINE

Former Manchester United and Chelsea head coach Jose Mourinho has launched his alcoholic wine named 'The Special One'. Check it out!

Mourinho, currently the coach of Benfica in Portugal, has ventured into the world of business with his very own wine.

The wine is named after his famous nickname, 'The Special One', a moniker he earned after famously declaring it to the media during his unveiling as Chelsea manager in 2004.

At the time, his statement showcased his confidence, self-belief, and unique approach to leadership, instantly making him a larger-than-life figure in the Premier League.

Now, Mourinho has taken the nickname a step further, cementing its legacy by naming his wine after it, a nod to the bold personality and self-assuredness that have defined his career.

The 62-year-old tactician, who also managed the likes of Real Madrid and Tottenham Hotspur, has announced his wine on social media on Saturday.

"The Special One Wine is available now," Mourinho said on Instagram.

"To thank the very first buyers, I will be hand-signing and numbering the first 1,000 bottles.

"From the beautiful Douro region of Portugal, I’ve personally selected this wine," he added.

"These signed bottles will ship before Christmas in selected areas, for you, or for the Special One in your life."

'YES, I ALMOST TEARED UP': ZOHRAN MAMDANI MIGHT BE THIS UK FOOTBALL CLUB’S BIGGEST FAN

Mamdani, an Arsenal fan, has plenty of reasons to smile right now. Pic: AP

New York City Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani might just be one of Arsenal FC’s biggest fans, admitting he almost “teared up” at a video message from a club legend.

34-year-old Mamdani was elected mayor of NYC on 4 November on a platform of support for affordable housing, groceries and city transit. When he is sworn in in January 2026, he will become the city’s youngest mayor since 1892 and the first Indian-American and Muslim mayor.

Throughout his campaign, Mamdani was described by many as appearing down-to-earth and relatable, and that form continued recently when he received a video message from Arsenal football legend, Ian Wright.

During an appearance on The Adam Friedland Show, Mamdani was surprised with the video and could barely contain himself.

“Hi Zohran, how are you doing? Ian Wright here,” the video said. “I just want to say a massive, massive congratulations on what you’ve achieved. The real work, though, starts now. But, God willing, you can achieve everything that you have set out to achieve.”

As he watched the video, a grinning Mandani said, “I love you.”

Someone joked: “The most emotional I’ve ever seen Zohran…”

Another said: “Total Cultural Victory.”

“You will never see me glaze Arsenal ever again but this deserves an exception. Well done @IanWright0,” said another.

Posting later about the moment, Mandani wrote on X/Twitter: “Yes, I almost teared up over Arsenal.”

Piers Morgan responded: “I may have been a bit hasty in my judgement about Mayor Mandani. Any man who weeps over Arsenal and loves @IanWright0 is OK with me. He’s clearly a proper Gooner.”

Someone else commented: “You’re a Gunner? My respect and admiration for you just tripled.”

Another wrote: “This is what a real Mayor looks like.”

PIRELLI CONFIRM 2026 TYRE COMPOUNDS AS F1 GETS SET FOR A NEW ERA OF REGULATIONS

Pirelli have announced which tyre compounds the teams will have to race with in 2026.

Italian tyre manufacturer Pirelli have confirmed which tyres they are going to supply to the 11 F1 teams in the grid next season, as the sport gets set to move into a new era of racing.

This season, Pirelli gave the teams three compounds per race from their range of six different tyres, along with the intermediate and full wet weather options.

That model continues in 2026, but Pirelli will be choosing three compounds from the C1 through to the C5 rubber – with no C6 tyre option next season.

The last tyre test came in Mexico City just a few weeks ago, and saw the teams handed some extra compounds during the first practice session of the weekend. Pirelli have analysed this data to come up with their choices for 2026, with approval from the FIA.

The drivers will have five different compounds in play next season in dry weather running

Cars will run slightly narrower 18-inch tyres in 2026 compared to the current crop of vehicles. But Pirelli declared themselves satisfied that they had a good range of rubber for next season, which is set to feature 24 race weekends once again.

Pirelli’s statement read:

“Tyre development was carried out on the basis of forecast data as supplied by the teams, using simulations referring to loads and speeds predicted for the end of the 2026 season, while pursuing objectives similar to those of this year.

“The models were validated based on the results of development track testing with mule cars modified to reproduce the characteristics of the next generation of cars.”

Pirelli hope to create strategy differences with next year's tyre compounds

The C6 tyre was used this season at Imola, Monaco, Canada and Azerbaijan. But Pirelli felt there was not enough delta between that compound and the C5 tyre to justify its inclusion in 2026.

The tyres will be tested once more in Abu Dhabi, on December 9. The test will be conducted by the current drivers, while the young driver test will feature the 2025 tyres on the current cars.

There are then three lots of pre-season testing for the teams to further understand the new compounds, before the first race of the season in Australia, on March 8.

DERRY'S JUDE MCATAMNEY RELEASED BY NEW YORK GIANTS

DERRY’S JUDE MCATAMNEY has been released by the New York Giants.

The 25-year-old kicker was cut from the practice squad, with German tight end Maximilian Mang taking his place as as the designated international player.

McAtamney returned to the Giants’ practice squad in October, having been cut when he missed two kicks in their 33-32 loss to the Denver Broncos.

South Korean-American Younghoe Koo has since deputised for the injured Gano, with rookie Ben Sauls added to the Giants’ practice squad earlier this month.

McAtamney took up American football during the Covid-19 pandemic. After moving to the US in 2021, he signed for the Giants in 2024 as an undrafted free agent

He became the first Irish-born kicker to feature in a regular NFL game since 1985 when he replaced Gano against the Washington Commanders in November last year.

Meanwhile, Brock Purdy thre for one touchdown and Christian McCaffrey ran for another to lift San Francisco over the Carolina Panthers 20-9 on Monday, boosting the 49ers’ NFL playoff hopes

The 49ers improved to 8-4, closing the gap on the NFC West division-leading Los Angeles Rams (9-2) and second-placed Seattle (8-3).

“It was a great win,” McCaffrey said. “But I know we’re hungry for more and I know we can be better.

Carolina fell two games adrift of the 49ers in the wildcard playoff hunt at 6-6 and dropped behind leader Tampa Bay (6-5) in the NFC South race.

Purdy, who won in his return last week after missing eight games with a toe injury, was intercepted three times but still able to throw for 193 yards and lead the 49ers to a vital victory.

McCaffrey ran 24 times for 89 yards and caught seven passes for 53 yards.

Jauan Jennings caught a 12-yard touchdown pass from Purdy, escaping two would-be tacklers to reach the end zone as the 49ers took a 7-0 lead after a game-opening 15-play, 75-yard drive.

Purdy interceptions killed the next three 49ers drives, two of them pickoffs by Carolina’s Jaycee Horn, the last setting up Ryan Fitzgerald’s 25-yard field goal for Carolina with 2:28 remaining in the second quarter.

San Francisco answered on a 47-yard Matt Gay field goal to lift the 49ers ahead 10-3 at half-time.

McCaffrey’s 12-yard touchdown run against his former club late in the third quarter gave the 49ers a 17-3 edge.

Carolina responded with a 68-yard touchdown drive capped by Bryce Young’s 29-yard touchdown pass to Tetairoa McMillan.

But a two-point conversion pass failed and the Panthers trailed 17-9 entering the fourth quarter.

Gay added a 29-yard field goal to put San Francisco ahead by the final margin.

SPEED CHESS CHAMPIONSHIP: CARLSEN, NAKA, FIROUZJA AND LAZAVIK IN SEMIS

The quarterfinals of the 2025 Speed Chess Championship have concluded, producing two compelling semifinal pairings for the live stage in London this February. Magnus Carlsen will face Denis Lazavik, while Hikaru Nakamura is set to meet Alireza Firouzja in a clash of leading speed-play specialists. The event, organised by chess.com, continues to combine online matchplay with an on-site finale, bringing rapid-fire chess to a live audience on 7–8 February 2026.

All set for the London finals in February

The 2025 Speed Chess Championship reached its decisive stage as the quarterfinals concluded, setting up two high-profile semifinal encounters: Magnus Carlsen will meet Denis Lazavik, while Hikaru Nakamura is set to face Alireza Firouzja. These four players will participate in the live finals in London, scheduled for 7–8 February 2026, when the semifinals, consolation match and final will be played before an on-site audience.

The event follows its established format: following a series of qualifying events, a 16-player single-elimination bracket is organised by , with each match divided into three timed phases - 5+1, 3+1 and 1+1 - played consecutively. Should any match finish level, a series of extra 1+1 games is held, followed, if necessary, by a bidding Armageddon decider.

Carlsen defeats Caruana

Magnus Carlsen advanced after registering a 14½–7½ victory over Fabiano Caruana. Although the Norwegian began as the clear favourite, the match remained competitive well into the 3+1 portion. Amid the second section, Caruana trailed by only a single point at 6½–5½, taking advantage of an uncharacteristically uneven spell from Carlsen.

The balance shifted abruptly thereafter. Carlsen produced a sustained run of eight consecutive wins, effectively removing any doubt regarding the final outcome. His set scores reflected this late surge:

5+1: Carlsen 4½–2½ Caruana

3+1: Carlsen 4–3 Caruana

1+1: Carlsen 6–2 Caruana

Nakamura edges So

Hikaru Nakamura secured his place in London following a narrow win against Wesley So by an 11-10 score. The match was notable for its momentum swings: Nakamura twice built substantial leads, only for So to reply each time with three-game streaks. Rarely does Nakamura lose a bullet segment, but So managed exactly that, winning the 1+1 phase 4–3.

The American top seed nonetheless prevailed by taking a crucial penultimate game and defending a difficult position in the final encounter. The segment results were:

5+1: Nakamura 4½–2½ So

3+1: Nakamura 3½–3½ So

1+1: Nakamura 3–4 So

Firouzja overpowers Nepomniachtchi

Alireza Firouzja delivered one of the most one-sided results of the round, defeating Ian Nepomniachtchi 19–9. Firouzja's consistency across all three segments left his opponent with few opportunities to narrow the gap. He maintained a clear initiative throughout, winning each phase by a wide margin:

5+1: Firouzja 5½–3½ Nepomniachtchi

3+1: Firouzja 6½–3½ Nepomniachtchi

1+1: Firouzja 7–2 Nepomniachtchi

The result gives Firouzja a strong platform heading into his meeting with Nakamura.

Lazavik stops Niemann

Denis Lazavik completed the semifinal lineup with a 15½–9½ win over Hans Niemann. The Belarusian grandmaster maintained control for most of the match, ultimately scoring eleven wins to Niemann's five. His performance across the three phases was steady and convincing, and he now progresses to face Carlsen in London:

5+1: Niemann 2½–5½ Lazavik

3+1: Niemann 3½–4½ Lazavik

1+1: Niemann 3½–5½ Lazavik

JANSEN HURTS INDIA AGAIN, SOUTH AFRICA SENSE VICTORY

The Proteas take an overall lead of 314 at the end of Day 3

Marco Jansen continued to torment India in the second and final Test in Guwahati as the lanky quick claimed 6-48 to help South Africa grab a potentially decisive first-innings lead of 288 on day three on Monday.

A day after smashing a career-best 93 in South Africa's first-innings total of 489, Jansen helped dismantle India for 201 at the first ever Test at Barsapara Cricket Stadium.

Aiden Markram produced a catching masterclass with five of them, including a one-handed stunner to remove Nitish Kumar Reddy.

South Africa, pushing for a 2-0 series sweep, did not enforce the follow-on and finished the day on 26 for no loss and an overall lead of 314.

Ryan Rickelton (13) and Markram (12) will return on Tuesday hoping to bat India out of the match.

Earlier, India resumed on nine for no loss on a wicket described as a "road" by spinner Kuldeep Yadav because of its lack of assistance for the bowlers.

KL Rahul (22) looked compact in defence while his opening partner Yashasvi Jaiswal (58) was more fluent, often employing the sweep shot to counter the spinners.

Keshav Maharaj broke the 65-run opening stand an hour into play when Rahul lunged forward to defend a ball but was done for by the extra bounce. The ball hit the shoulder of his bat before nestling into Markram's hands at slip.

Jaiswal took two off Simon Harmer's bowling to bring up the first fifty by an India batter in the series but his knock did not last much longer.

The left-hander was surprised by the slowness of the track and spooned a Harmer delivery towards backward point where it would have landed short of most players but not the 2.06m tall Jansen, who dived forward to pouch the ball.

Harmer claimed a second victim when Sai Sudharsan pulled the ball to Rickelton at mid-wicket.

Jansen then hit India with a bouncer barrage that paid off handsomely on an otherwise docile track and left the hosts reeling at 122-7.

A 72-run stand between Washington Sundar (48) and Kuldeep proved the wicket was far from unplayable but the hosts were let down by their frontline batters. Number nine Kuldeep faced 134 balls, the most by any Indian batter, for his 19.

LIONEL MESSI MAKES MLS CUP PLAYOFFS HISTORY WITH DOMINANT INDIVIDUAL DISPLAY IN INTER MIAMI ROUT OF FC CINCINNATI

Getty/GOAL

Lionel Messi made MLS Cup playoffs history with a dominant individual display as Inter Miami thrashed FC Cincinnati 4-0 to progress to the Eastern Conference finals. The World Cup-winning Argentina legend was involved in every goal, contributing one of his own and three assists for his team to leave the David Beckham-owned club just two games away from winning their first-ever MLS Cup.

Messi scripts MLS Cup Playoffs history

Messi opened the scoring for Inter Miami with a brilliant header in the 18th minute. The goal came after a swift counterattack sparked by former Barcelona full-back Jordi Alba, who intercepted a misplaced pass from Nick Hagglund in midfield. The Spaniard quickly found Messi in a central pocket, and the Argentina star slid a perfectly-weighted ball out to Mateo Silvetti on the left. The youngster then sent an inch-perfect cross into the box, and Messi met it with a bouncing header that beat goalkeeper Roman Celentano and nestled into the far corner.

The 38-year-old then returned the favour to his compatriot Silvetti as he provided the assist for his goal in the second period. Messi went on to set up two more assists for Tadeo Allende as Inter Miami completed the rout of FC Cincinnati. With a combined four goals and assists in the clash, Messi created history as he now has 12 goal contributions, the most in the history of the MLS Cup playoffs.

Inter Miami two games away from winning MLS Cup

Messi has certainly changed Inter Miami's fortunes since joining the club in a high-profile transfer in 2023. The club which made its debut in 2020 and finished among the top 10 teams in the MLS Eastern Conference, won the MLS Supporters' Shield in 2024 under the leadership of the Argentina captain. In the subsequent campaign, Messi has now led the Herons to the Conference finals and is only two games away from helping the club win its first-ever MLS Cup. He has also enjoyed a stellar run of form in the current season, as he has scored 43 goals in 47 appearances across all competitions and has provided 23 assists. He is on course to win back-to-back MVP awards in the MLS.

Mascherano hails Messi

Speaking after the crucial victory, Inter Miami head coach Javier Mascherano said: "Messi is an amazing player. He is good at handling the ball and pressing. Coaching him is my privilege." He added: "We still haven't achieved anything. We need more focus. We must show our best performance in the next match to reach the MLS final."

Up next: Inter Miami gear up for New York City

In the other Eastern Conference semi-final, New York City FC edged out Philadelphia Union 1-0 and will now face a red-hot Inter Miami side, led by Messi, in the final on November 29. The kind of form Messi and his team have displayed, fans can remain hopeful of reaching the final game for the ultimate prize.

WHY FERRARI HAS NO DEFEATIST LEWIS HAMILTON REMARKS AFTER LAS VEGAS GP

Lewis Hamilton was downbeat post-race in Las Vegas

Ferrari boss Fred Vasseur has claimed Lewis Hamilton‘s sullen comments at Formula 1‘s Las Vegas Grand Prix were a “normal” response to a disappointing weekend.

Hamilton’s tumultuous debut campaign with Ferrari reached a new low at the Las Vegas Strip Circuit as he was dumped out in Q1 with the slowest lap time in the wet.

Despite recovering 10 spots to come home in 10th, which became eighth once the McLaren drivers were excluded, Hamilton was downbeat when speaking post-race.

The Briton said that he took zero positives from his comeback drive, citing that he has encountered “22 bad weekends” across what has been his “worst season ever”.

However, Vasseur insisted that he saw little issue with Hamilton’s morose remarks, highlighting that such a demeanour is to be expected when the dust hasn’t settled.

“You know perfectly the system,” he told Motorsport Week. “The TV pen, five minutes after the race, when you have a tough race, it’s very harsh for them.

“I can perfectly understand the adrenaline, the emotion, and to have a comment a bit harsh at this stage of the weekend. And I would say that it’s normal.

“I don’t know if normal is the right word, but I prefer to have drivers being very open at the end of the race when you didn’t do the perfect job, when the car was not good, to say, ‘Okay, I’m frustrated’. And someone going to the TV pen saying, ‘I know, guys, the team is perfect, the car is good, blah, blah, blah’. In this case, you would be upset.

“You can’t blame them in any circumstances and I think it’s quite normal as a human, sometimes on the radio or just after the session, to be a bit, not upset, but to be a bit on the emotion.

“Now the most important is not what they say on the TV pen, it’s what they do on the Monday morning with the team to try to do better and to try to push the team to do better. This is more the job of the drivers than the TV pen.”

Vasseur has contended that various incidents over recent race weekends have conspired to generate results that haven’t mirrored Hamilton’s overall competitiveness.

“Yes, it’s true that on the mathematical side the last couple of weekends were very difficult with Brazil DNF, Mexico the penalty, and this one,” he acknowledged.

“But overall I think Mexico, Austin, it was probably also the best weekend of Lewis in terms of pure performance.

“But now it’s true for the team also and we didn’t put everything together the last two hours of the weekend, and it’s why on the mathematical side and on the championship we did a huge step down.

“But in terms of pure performance I think it’s also why we are not in so bad shape compared to the mid-season.

“I can understand the reaction from Lewis just after the race, but we just have to calm down, to discuss and to be focused on the next two, because the next two we will be back.

“Keep in mind also that Lewis was there in FP1, in FP3 with the pace was good and we have to build up the weekend like this and to start from P20 is not the best way to have a good result.”

Ferrari insists Hamilton struggles not down to ‘performance’

And while he has ruled out his prospects improving over the remaining races, Vasseur believes a clean weekend is the sole thing eluding the seven-time F1 champion.

“Today it’s difficult, but if you have a look on the last couple of races that we are speaking about, Mexico it’s a matter of [a] penalty that he was able to be on the podium,” he reiterated.

“I don’t think that we have to change completely, it’s a matter more to put everything together and I think we are struggling to have a clean weekend.

“But it’s either the penalty or contact with [Franco] Colapinto [in Brazil] or the quali yesterday and it’s not pure performance, not only pure performance.

“For sure we have to improve on performance, this is clear, but it’s more the way you build up the weekend and how you do the expectations and the track preparation.”

Vasseur has conceded that the results not matching the high hopes that Hamilton harboured upon his arrival at the team have contributed to his emotional outbursts.

Asked whether he thinks Hamilton not hitting the heights that he is accustomed to has caused his pride to be hurt to a certain extent, the Frenchman responded: “Yes.

“I think you can understand that it’s normal that Lewis is not happy with P10 in Vegas and Ferrari is not happy with P10 in Vegas and Ferrari is not happy with P6 in Vegas.

“But now the reaction is to work together to try to do a better job next week and it’s the life of the team.

“If you remember, Max [Verstappen] was P11 in Budapest and it was not the absolute drama,” referencing the turnaround Red Bull has managed since the summer break.

“We need to keep this approach and to come back again and again and to try to push again and again and to try to do a better job.

“The frustration is normal. I would be worried if we didn’t have this kind of frustration when we are doing P10.”
