New York City Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani might just be one of Arsenal FC’s biggest fans, admitting he almost “teared up” at a video message from a club legend.
34-year-old Mamdani was elected mayor of NYC on 4 November on a platform of support for affordable housing, groceries and city transit. When he is sworn in in January 2026, he will become the city’s youngest mayor since 1892 and the first Indian-American and Muslim mayor.
Throughout his campaign, Mamdani was described by many as appearing down-to-earth and relatable, and that form continued recently when he received a video message from Arsenal football legend, Ian Wright.
During an appearance on The Adam Friedland Show, Mamdani was surprised with the video and could barely contain himself.
“Hi Zohran, how are you doing? Ian Wright here,” the video said. “I just want to say a massive, massive congratulations on what you’ve achieved. The real work, though, starts now. But, God willing, you can achieve everything that you have set out to achieve.”
As he watched the video, a grinning Mandani said, “I love you.”
Someone joked: “The most emotional I’ve ever seen Zohran…”
Another said: “Total Cultural Victory.”
“You will never see me glaze Arsenal ever again but this deserves an exception. Well done @IanWright0,” said another.
Posting later about the moment, Mandani wrote on X/Twitter: “Yes, I almost teared up over Arsenal.”
Piers Morgan responded: “I may have been a bit hasty in my judgement about Mayor Mandani. Any man who weeps over Arsenal and loves @IanWright0 is OK with me. He’s clearly a proper Gooner.”
Someone else commented: “You’re a Gunner? My respect and admiration for you just tripled.”
Another wrote: “This is what a real Mayor looks like.”

A Kobe Bryant jersey worn during his Los Angeles Lakers pre-season and regular-season debuts was sold for $7 million at Sotheby's in New York City on Thursday, the auction house said.

At $7 million the item is the fourth-most expensive game-worn sports jersey behind Babe Ruth’s "called shot" jersey ($24 million), Michael Jordan's 1998 NBA Finals jersey ($10.1 million), and Diego Maradona's Argentina shirt from the 1986 World Cup $9.3 million.

COLIN KAEPERNICK STILL TRAINING FOR NFL RETURN ... Says Partner Nessa
Colin Kaepernick hasn't played in a professional football game in nearly a decade, but the former star quarterback is STILL training for his NFL comeback ... this according to his longtime partner Nessa Diab.
TMZ Sports caught up with the radio and TV host this week in New York City ... when we asked about Kap, who remains a free agent, as several NFL teams are still without a QB.
Nessa -- who had a child with the former 49ers quarterback in 2022 -- told us Kap's busting his ass in the gym, training regularly, hoping an NFL GM will give him a shot to show he's still got what it takes to lead a football team.
"All day, every day!" Nessa said of Kap's training. "Nothing has changed! Nothing!"

MIKE TYSON MESSING W/ JAKE PAUL AT PRESS CONFERENCE ... Shoves Him, Giggles!!!
Mike Tyson's showing he ain't scared of Jake Paul ... giving him a couple shoves during a press conference for their upcoming fight -- and laughing all the while.
The heavyweight boxing legend came face to face with the Youtuber-turned-fighter at Fanatics Fest at the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center in New York City Sunday ... and, when they come together in the center, Tyson gives Paul a quick left to the chest.
Tyson and Paul exchange words before they start moving back toward each other ... where Tyson full-on shoves JP -- cracking up at his 27-year-old opponent.

Corralled into standing face to face once again, the two finally let photographers get the photos they need ... before Paul gets MT back with his own push.
Mike seemed giddy during their whole exchange ... seemingly not a lot of malice here -- but, Paul appeared none too happy about the champ clowning him in front of all those cameras.
Not the first time the two have done a press conference like this, remember. The fight was initially supposed to happen last month, but the two fighters agreed to push it back after Mike suffered a medical emergency on a plane in late May.
Tyson still trash talked his opponent after his medical scare -- saying his emergency only bought Paul more time. Jake's promised him no mercy in the ring -- so, don't expect anyone to take it easy come November 15.

The drama's already heating up for their bout ... and, Tyson's loving every minute of it.

LIVERPOOL CHAIRMAN HOPES PREMIER LEAGUE GAMES IN NEW YORK AS FIFA REVIEWS TRADITIONAL RULES
![]() |
| AP |
The chairman of Liverpool is “determined one day” to see the storied English soccer team play a Premier League game in New York — an idea that met immediate resistance from fans on Friday.
The topic of top European leagues staging games abroad has been revived after FIFA recently opened a review of its rules blocking so-called “out-of-territory” games. The Premier League proposed in 2008 to stage an extra round of games each season outside England, but it met with strong opposition from supporter groups as well as FIFA.
If FIFA changes its policy, it could open the door to European leagues staging games in the U.S. and Saudi Arabia — both key and lucrative future tournament hosts for the world governing body — as well as other countries where top clubs frequently play offseason exhibitions.
“I’m determined one day to have a Premier League game be played in New York City,” Liverpool chairman Tom Werner told the Financial Times in an interview published Friday.
Werner laid out an even more ambitious “crazy” plan for multiple Premier League games to be played on a rolling schedule around the world on the same day.
“I even have the sort of crazy idea,” Werner said, “that there would be a day where we play one game in Tokyo, one game a few hours later in Los Angeles, one game a few hours later in Rio, one game a few hours later in Riyadh and make it sort of a day where football, where the Premier League, is celebrated.”
Opposition was quick to come from one of Liverpool's leading supporter groups, Spirit of Shankly, which wrote on social media: “Anyone determined to play competitive LFC Premier League matches abroad should remember that we as fans are determined they don’t.”
Playing league games abroad has been a red line for European soccer even if countries like Spain, Italy and France have taken their domestic Super Cup games to Saudi Arabia, China and Israel. Super Cups are largely ceremonial events played between the previous season’s national league and cup title winners.
Liverpool’s principal owner, American financier John Henry, seemed to be wary of fans' reactions.
The FT reported that Henry, also the principal owner of the Boston Red Sox, stressed that Werner’s hopes for a game in New York was “not something that I advocate or am particularly interested in.”
Henry had to apologize to Liverpool fans in 2021 for signing the club up for the hugely divisive Super League that 12 storied teams tried to launch as a breakaway from European soccer’s traditional competitive structure.
A furious backlash by fans and threats of legislation by the British government forced the six English clubs to withdraw and the Super League plan collapsed within 48 hours. Real Madrid and Barcelona are still working on plans to revive the project.
“Out-of-territory” games risks creating another rift between English fans and their clubs’ owners, who are increasingly billionaires from the U.S. and Middle East nation states.
Organizing games abroad is “not part of our current plans, it really isn’t,” Premier League chief executive Richard Masters said in April, after FIFA fueled speculation by agreeing to withdraw from a court case in New York on the issue.
FIFA president Gianni Infantino gave no timeline last month for when its review will be completed.
The criteria for FIFA's working group to consider included helping domestic fans travel thousands of miles (kilometers) for games, and protecting local teams who could be overshadowed by clubs with global brands coming to play near them.
“Let’s figure out a way to offer them very cheap travel, accommodations so that if Liverpool is playing Nottingham Forest, we will support fans coming to New York and make this an attractive thing for the fans as well,” Werner told the FT.
The reaction on social media last month by former England and Barcelona great Gary Lineker to the idea of playing games abroad was clear: “No. No. No.”
Liverpool's Premier League rivals Manchester City and Chelsea will play competitive games in the U.S. next year, in FIFA's Club World Cup which has been expanded to 32 teams. Liverpool did not qualify as one of the 12 European entries.
