F1 ACADEMY 2025: LAS VEGAS TO DECIDE DRIVERS' CHAMPIONSHIP BETWEEN DORIANE PIN AND MAYA WEUNG

Doriane Pin and Maya Weug are set for a thrilling battle in the final round of the F1 Academy season; Las Vegas will host two races with Qualifying on Friday at 5.30am, Saturday’s reverse grid race at 4.15am and the main race on Sunday from 2.15am – all live on Sky Sports F1

The 2025 F1 Academy titles will be decided this weekend in Las Vegas with full focus on Doriane Pin and Maya Weug battling it out for the Drivers’ Championship.

What is the championship situation?

Pin leads Weug by just nine points in the closest title fight since the series began in 2023, so it promises to be a dramatic final two races alongside the F1 Las Vegas Grand Prix action.

"We are leading the series so that means we are the best ones, right? We keep it going until the end," said Pin.

 "Weug added: "[My mindset is] the same as Singapore, same as Zandvoort. We have to go for the win. We still have nine points left, so step by step we will get there."

In behind the top two, Britain's Ella Lloyd and USA's Chloe Chambers are split by just two points in the fight for third in the Drivers' Championship.

 

In the Teams' Championship, Prema Racing are on course for a third straight title as they carry a 49-point advantage over MP Motorsport into Las Vegas.

Championship leader Pin drives for Prema alongside her two team-mates Nina Gademan and Tina Hausmann, so it could be double success for the Italian outfit this weekend.

F1 Academy format and points system

A maximum of 39 points can be won over a race weekend by a single driver. There will be just one practice session for the drivers to get up to speed on the high-speed Las Vegas street circuit, before heading into Qualifying at 5.30am on Friday morning UK time.

Two points are awarded for pole position and one point is given for the fastest lap in each race, if you finish in the top eight for Race 1, or top 10 for Race 2.

Saturday's reverse grid race at 4.15am will have fewer points on offer, so only the top eight will score points: 10-8-6-5-4-3-2-1.

The main race on Sunday at 2.15am, where the Drivers' Championship will be won, will use the same points system as F1, so the top 10 will score points: 25-18-15-12-10-8-6-4-2-1.

The title race story so far

A thrilling third season of F1 Academy has seen eight different winners from 12 races ahead of the Las Vegas finale.

Pin won the main race in Shanghai to end the opening weekend as the championship leader but a second place and victory in Jeddah gave Weug the lead after two events.

In Miami, Pin stuck back with a superb performance from sixth then torrential rain cancelled the main race, meaning there were three races in Montreal.

And the weekend in Canada produced huge drama with several collisions and incidents. Amid the chaos, Weug suffered electrical issues so failed to score points in two of the races and only finished sixth in the other.

Pin took the championship lead and Chloe Chambers was now a title protagonist following her main race victory.

On home soil at Zandvoort, Weug began to mount a championship comeback from 36 points adrift with pole position, a dominant main race win and third in the reverse grid race.

The Dutch driver continued her great form into Singapore with second in the reverse grid race and a third win of the season after a last-lap overtake on Pin in mixed conditions, meaning Pin leads Weug by just nine points ahead of Las Vegas.

DANIEL RICCIARDO JOINS FORCES WITH F1 TEAM AFTER STRIKING NEW DEAL

Daniel Ricciardo has secured his next move in motorsport, with his premium lifestyle brand Enchanté partnering with his former team.

Daniel Ricciardo is returning to motorsport, with the Australian's premium lifestyle brand Enchanté teaming up with Racing Bulls' academy programme.

The partnership will see the eight-time grand prix winner's company logo adorn the F1 Academy car of Rafaela Ferreira, starting at the Miami Grand Prix this weekend.

In addition, the deal will see Ferreira wear co-branded Enchanté team kit with apparel also available on the company's website.

"Enchanté has always come from a place of fun," Ricciardo said. "Look good, feel good. Jumping in a car at those speeds requires so much confidence, and I know feeling comfortable walking through the paddock feeds all of that.

"This partnership between Enchanté and the Visa Cash App Racing Bulls Academy Programme is something we’re really excited about, and we look forward to creating an extension of fashion in the paddock that’s been building over the last few years."

Ferreira, who sits ninth in the F1 Academy standings with eight points after two rounds, added: "I like to play around with my style and often use clothes to express who I am.

"This is such an exciting partnership as I love the fun vibe that Enchanté brings, so can’t wait to bring the confidence it gives me to track.

FIA CONFIRMS WHISTLEBLOWER COMPLAINTS AGAINST PRESIDENT REGARDING SAUDI ARABIA AND LAS VEGAS RACES

 The FIA said Tuesday that its compliance officer has received two complaints “detailing potential allegations involving certain members of its governing body" in seeming reference to whistleblower claims against the president of Formula 1's governing body.

The BBC reported this week that FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem allegedly intervened to overturn a penalty given to Fernando Alonso at last year's Saudi Arabian Grand Prix. A second BBC report says the same whistleblower also claims Ben Sulayem told officials not to certify the Las Vegas circuit for its high-profile race last November.

“The Compliance Department is assessing these concerns, as is common practice in these matters, to ensure that due process is meticulously followed,” the FIA said.

The FIA confirmed no details about the allegations or even that Ben Sulayem is the target. In an additional statement given to The Associated Press, an FIA spokesman said: “It is unfortunate and a source of great concern that the matter has been disclosed to the media without any prior authorization and that certain elements of the report were inaccurately reported.”

HAMILTON CALLS FOR CHANGE AT FIA AFTER WOLFF STORM

Lewis Hamilton called for change at Formula One's governing body on Friday after what he said was "unacceptable" treatment of his Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff's wife Susie over an alleged confidentiality breach.

The sport's most successful driver, a seven-times world champion who finished third overall this season, spoke out at a press conference ahead of the FIA's end-of-year prizegiving gala in Azerbaijan.

"A disappointing week really to see that the governing body of our sport has sought to question the integrity of one of the most incredible female leaders we've ever had in our sport," said the Briton.

"Without questioning, without any evidence. And then just saying sorry at the end, and that's just unacceptable.

"There is a constant fight to really improve diversity and inclusion within the industry but it seems that there are certain individuals in the leadership within the FIA that, every time we try to make a step forward, they try to pull us back, and that has to change."

FIA COMPLIANCE PROBE KICKS UP A STORM

Formula One's governing body announced a compliance probe on Tuesday that drew a furious response from the sport's owners, top team Mercedes and one of the most senior women in motorsport.

The storm broke after the FIA issued a surprise statement saying it was looking into reports a team boss had received confidential information from an employee of the commercial rights holder.

Although the principal was not named, media identified him as Mercedes' Toto Wolff whose wife Susie leads the all-female F1 Academy and reports to Formula One chief executive Stefano Domenicali.

F1 ACADEMY DRIVER BIANCA BUSTAMANTE ON LIFE IN THE FAST LANE

A month on from her historic F1 Academy race win in Valencia, Bianca Bustamante still can't believe it. The Filipina driver has made a remarkable journey from her homeland to the racetrack.

"When I won, it was like the whole world suddenly exploded," Bustamante told DW.

The 18-year-old received a message from the president of the Philippines, had a resolution voiced on the country's senate floor and saw her face splashed across an enormous billboard on the busiest street in Manila.

"I honestly didn't know how to react. I wasn't expecting the effect would be this much. It was really a crazy moment for me. To experience all this stuff at 18, sometimes I think it's a bit too much," she said.

It would be easy to dismiss this response as classic athlete hyperbole, but Bustamante's journey to this point explains why the tears flowed and the country celebrated when the teenager stood on the podium.
