Sir Frank Williams, legendary team builder and owner of the Williams Formula 1 team, has passed away at age 79.
The founder of one of the most successful Formula 1 teams that he named it after his name, Williams F1 team, has left a lasting legacy behind that will be emulated and cherished for many more years to come.
Williams F1 team dominated the tracks during the 80’s and 90’s but also continues to do well to date. The team was founded in 1977 with 16 championships to its name, nine constructors’ and seven drivers’ titles, and in total they have 144 race wins.
Sir Williams was astonishingly resilient in running his team even after he had a terrible car crash in France in 1986 that made him a tetraplegic. Ever since he was confined to a wheelchair. According to his, he thought he was late for a plane but he should not have been speeding because he messed up the “French” times. He went off the road and dropped 2.5 meters and was found on top of the car he was driving with a Brocken neck.
In a statement released by the Williams team on Sunday said: “It is with great sadness that on behalf of the Williams family, the team can confirm the death of Sir Frank Williams CBE, Founder and Former Team Principal of Williams Racing, at age of 79.
“After being admitted to hospital on Friday, Sir Frank, passed away peacefully this morning surrounded by his family. Today we pay tribute to our much loved and inspirational figurehead.
“Frank will be sorely missed. We request that all friends and colleagues respect the Williams family wishes for privacy at this time.”
Tributes for the motorsports giant have been pouring in from across the globe.
