MANCHESTER UNITED SET TO COMPLETE £62.5M SIGNING OF WOLVES' MATHEUS CUNHA

Manchester United are poised to sign Matheus Cunha after triggering the £62.5m release clause in the Wolves forward’s contract. United have agreed to split the fee in three payments across the next two years.

Wolves rejected United’s attempt to stagger the payment across five years but now the Brazilian is set to become Ruben Amorim’s first summer signing after a hugely disappointing season.

The signing is expected to be a formality from here and he could be the first of several summer arrivals for United. He has already agreed personal terms and will undergo a medical in the coming days. Amorim is also keen on signing the Ipswich forward Liam Delap, who has a release clause of £30m after relegation from the Premier League.

Cunha has impressed across his two and a half years at Wolves, for whom he scored 15 goals this season to pull them clear of relegation trouble. He joined from RB Leipzig in January 2023, initially on loan, before completing a £43m permanent move.

He signed a new contract on deadline day in February on the basis that his new deal would contain a release clause amid interest from Arsenal, Aston Villa and Nottingham Forest.

Meanwhile, United are expected to be open to selling Alejandro Garnacho if they receive an offer that matches their valuation of about £60m. United are also keen to offload Marcus Rashford, who spent the second half of the season on loan at Aston Villa, and Antony, who has shone on loan at Conference League finalists Real Betis.

STAGGERING UPDATE OVER TOLL OF LIVERPOOL PARADE CRASH AD POLICE CHARGES REVEALED

The man arrested for ploughing his car into a crowd of football fans celebrating Liverpool’s Premier League title victory is suspected of attempted murder, dangerous driving and driving after taking drugs, police said.

Four children were among the 65 people injured in Tuesday’s tragedy, when a 53-year-old white, British man followed an ambulance through a roadblock in Liverpool’s city centre and rammed his Ford Galaxy car into pedestrians. The roadblock had been temporarily lifted so paramedics could help a man who suffered a suspected heart attack, Merseyside Police said.

Though 11 of those injured remained in hospital in a stable condition.

In a staggering update from authorities though, it has been revealed there have been no deaths as a result of the ramming — despite the horrific nature of the incident and how crowded it was at the scene.

Merseyside Assistant Chief Constable Jenny Sims said the man was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder, dangerous driving and driving while under the influence of drugs.

The incident is not being treated as an act of terrorism.

“There was no intelligence to suggest an incident of this nature would take place,” Constable Sims said, adding that “an extensive investigation into the precise circumstances of the incident” was continuing.

She also defended the policing operation during the parade, noting the force had planned for “all contingencies”.

In a statement overnight, King Charles joined the chorus of wellwishers, saying he was “deeply shocked and saddened” at the situation.

“It is truly devastating to see that what should have been a joyous celebration for so many could end in such distressing circumstances,” the British monarch, who is currently on a visit to Canada with his wife Queen Camilla, said in a statement.

“At this heartbreaking time for the people of Liverpool, I know that the strength of community spirit for which your city is renowned will be a comfort and support to those in need.

“Our prayers and deepest sympathy are with all those who have been affected, and my special gratitude goes out to the first responders, emergency service personnel and other individuals who rushed to the aid of the injured.”

The Prince and Princess of Wales also said they were “deeply saddened” by the scenes.

“What should have been a joyful celebration ended with tragedy,” Prince William, who is a patron of the Football Association and an avid fan of the sport, and his wife Princess Catherine said in a message on social media.

“Our thoughts are with those who were injured and to the first responders on the ground.”

Footage taken from a shop showed the car edging through the crowds of supporters just two minutes before it accelerated down the street.

It was filmed slowly driving down Dale Street through groups of unaware fans – including children – before it turned onto Water Street.

One witness, Matthew O’Carroll, told Sky News he and his family were headed home from the parade when they saw the car go “flying by”.

“If we’d left the parade like a minute later we might have been involved in it or saw someone that got hit, which would have obviously been horrific as well,” he said.

“So, you know, you’ve got to think yourself quite fortunate.

“Something like that shouldn’t be happening. It is such a shame. It was a real thing of like, ‘Wow, that was it’ … potentially a close shave.”

Robbie Potter, who nearly died in the 2017 Manchester Arena bombing when shrapnel pierced his fear, told Sky News he was “10 seconds away” from being struck by the car.

“I thought it was terrorism at first, I really did … not again,” Mr Potter said.

“People who was with us said ‘Get away’, because they expected the car to blow. Ten seconds earlier, I’d have been by it.”

AN EMOTIONAL FAREWELL: RAFAEL NADAL MOVED BY A HEARTFELT TRIBUTE AT ROLAND GARROS

In a moment that captured the hearts of millions, Rafael Nadal stood on the clay of Court Philippe-Chatrier—his battlefield, his sanctuary, his home for nearly two decades—and fought back tears as Roland Garros honored him with a tribute that celebrated one of the greatest legacies in the history of sport. The King of Clay was visibly overwhelmed, not by an opponent this time, but by the immense love, admiration, and gratitude shown to him by the tennis world and his fans across the globe.

This wasn’t just another match, and it wasn’t just another ceremony. It was a deeply emotional and symbolic gesture, a recognition of an era defined by Nadal’s unmatched dominance, humility, and passion. The tribute, set against the backdrop of his 14 French Open titles, was more than a celebration—it was a thank-you, a farewell, and a standing ovation that seemed to last a lifetime.

The atmosphere in the stadium was electric yet reverent. As footage of his most iconic moments played on the big screen—from his first title in 2005 as a 19-year-old phenom to his historic 14th championship in 2022—the crowd erupted into applause, many with tears in their eyes. Chants of “Rafa! Rafa!” echoed through the stadium, a chorus of love and appreciation for the man who made Parisian clay his kingdom.

Nadal, never one to seek the spotlight outside of competition, stood with hand over heart, visibly touched and emotional. For a player who has built his career on intensity and resilience, this was a rare moment of vulnerability—one where the weight of a legendary journey seemed to wash over him all at once.

The tribute wasn’t just a nod to his achievements; it was an acknowledgment of the battles he fought—physically, mentally, and emotionally—to keep returning to this court year after year. The injuries, the doubts, the comebacks—all became part of the lore. Nadal didn’t just win at Roland Garros; he endured, he evolved, and he inspired.

Over 112 victories on this court. Only 3 defeats. Fourteen trophies. Countless memories. And one immeasurable legacy. The numbers themselves are staggering, but what moves people the most is how he did it: with class, with determination, and with a love for the game that never wavered.

As the tribute concluded, Nadal addressed the crowd, expressing his heartfelt thanks. His voice cracked with emotion as he spoke of his bond with the tournament, the fans, and the city of Paris. He didn’t confirm whether this would be his last appearance at Roland Garros, but the moment felt like a curtain call on a chapter that redefined greatness.

In sport, it’s rare to witness such a perfect alignment of talent, tenacity, and timelessness. Rafael Nadal’s story at Roland Garros is not just history—it’s mythology. And as the clay dust settles, one thing is certain: no matter what the future holds, Nadal’s name will forever echo in the heart of Paris.

'SHOCKED AND DEVASTATED' JÜRGEN KLOPP RELEASES STATEMENT ON LIVERPOOL PARADE CAR CRASH

Ex-Liverpool manager Klopp was back on Merseyside to attend his former club’s Premier League title coronation and has sent well wishes to the people injured in the horrific crash

Former Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has released a statement about the car crash that marred the Reds’s trophy parade, saying he is “shocked and devastated” by the news.

Fans were out on the streets of Liverpool on Bank Holiday Monday, celebrating the Premier League title, when a car ploughed into the crowds, leaving 47 people hurt, including four seriously injured. Footage circulating online appeared to show a vehicle speed up as it veered into pedestrians on both sides of the crowded street.

Four children were among the 27 people rushed to hospital following the incident on Water Street on Monday evening, while 20 others were treated at the scene for minor injuries.

Police confirmed one child and an adult were seriously injured, while Liverpool City Metro Mayor Steve Rotheram told BBC Radio 5 Live on Tuesday morning that four people are still “very, very ill in hospital”

Klopp, who departed Anfield after nine years as Liverpool manager last summer, was back on Merseyside to attend his former club’s title coronation and posted pictures of the celebrations on his social media account throughout the day.

He has now posted about the appalling incident on Instagram, writing: “My family and I are shocked and devastated. Our thoughts and prayers are with all those who are injured and affected. You'll never walk alone.”

A 53-year-old man, who police described as white, British and from the Merseyside area, was arrested at the scene of the incident at 6pm on Monday, with Merseyside Police saying they believe him to be the driver.

The force is not treating the incident as terrorism-related, while prime minister Sir Keir Starmer condemned the incident, calling the scenes “appalling” as he sent a message of unity, saying the city “stands together”.

Klopp cemented his place in Liverpool folklore during his time as boss, delivering a first Premier League title to the club in the Covid-hit 2019-20 season, 30 years after their most recent top-flight crown. He also won a Champions League, an FA Cup, two League Cups and a Club World Cup while at Anfield.

He developed a special bond with fans of the club and urged supporters to back his successor Arne Slot, who has subsequently gone on to win the league in his first season at the helm.

Following the final game of the season against Crystal Palace on Sunday, when Liverpool received the Premier League trophy, Klopp posted a picture of him and Slot celebrating together, with the caption: “Congratulations Champions!! What a team, what a club, what a season! YNWA”

BREAKING NEWS: POLICE RESPONDING TO INCIDENT AT LIVERPOOL FC PARADE AFTER REPORTS OF CAR COLLISION WITH PEDESTRIANS

Ambulance vehicles are at the scene in Liverpool

Police are responding to an incident near the Liverpool Football Club parade after reports of a car collision with a number of pedestrians.

The incident happened as thousands of fans lined the streets of the city to celebrate Liverpool's Premier League title victory.

A police spokesperson said: "We are currently dealing with reports of a road traffic collision in Liverpool city centre.

"We were contacted at just after 6pm today, Monday 26 May, following reports a car had been in collision with a number of pedestrians on Water Street.

"The car stopped at the scene and a male has been detained.

"Emergency services are currently on the scene. We will issue more updates as we have them."

Eyewitness Natasha Rinaldi said she was watching the parade from her friend's living room window when "we heard some screams".

"It was so loud. People sounded desperate. And then we looked at the window and we saw the car run over people," she told Sky News.

She added: "People started rushing (in) to try to go after the driver and they tried to break the car. Then police tried everything to block and push people away."

North West Ambulance Service said in a statement that it was "currently assessing the situation and working with other members of the emergency services".

"Our priority is to ensure people receive the medical help they need as quickly as possible," the statement added.

Fans lined the streets with plumes of red smoke greeting the players along the way.

'I HAVE BEEN DEAD SLOW THE WHOLE RACE? FULL RADIO FROM HAMILTON'S FRUSTRATING MONACO GP

The final message broadcast from Lewis Hamilton to his race engineer Riccardo Adami at the end of Sunday’s race was: “Are you upset with me?”

The pair had little to celebrate after the Monaco Grand Prix, even though Hamilton had moved up two places to finish fifth.

That was still one place lower than he originally qualified. He’d taken a three-place grid penalty for holding up Max Verstappen during Q1, largely due to Adami incorrectly informing him that Verstappen was not on a flying lap.

After picking up a couple of places early in the race, Hamilton lost touch with the leading group of four cars. The timing of his pit stops meant he encountered a lot of traffic and, as in previous races this year, he often pressed Adami for information he wasn’t receiving.

The mutual frustration grew as Hamilton dropped further behind and his requests for information occasionally went unanswered. That appeared to include Hamilton’s final query.

“Is Alonso slow or is he just managing?”

Hamilton held on to his seventh place at the start, following Fernando Alonso and Isack Hadjar ahead. He grew concerned when Hadjar began to pull away from them after lap seven.

"Push now, this is our race”

Ferrari got the timing of Hamilton’s first pit stop spot-on, allowing him to jump ahead of Alonso and Hadjar without being threatened by Esteban Ocon behind.

“Eventually fighting Verstappen”

Hamilton’s next target was Verstappen. However as the Ferrari driver had made his first pit stop much earlier than his rival, Hamilton faced an uphill struggle to close in.

“Verstappen ahead of you, turn one”

By the time Verstappen made his first pit stop, Hamilton’s tyres were already 10 laps old. He lost more time ploughing through traffic as first Liam Lawson and later Alexander Albon held up queues of cars in order to help their team mates. Between laps 31 and 37 he fell 14 seconds back from the race leaders.

“I thought he came out just ahead of me?”

As he continued to lap slower cars, Hamilton was dismayed to learn how quickly Verstappen was able to pull away from him after his first pit stop.

“I can’t match that”

Once in free air, Hamilton tried to match Verstappen’s pace, but his hard tyres were now over 20 laps old while Verstappen was running on mediums.

“We’ll correct it at the next pit stop”

As Hamilton’s second stint drew to an end, he became increasingly concerned about his car’s balance. Ferrari prepared to make a change for his final pit stop, when he would switch back to the medium rubber.

“Why the hell are you giving me Verstappen’s stint?”

Hamilton’s frustration at being unable to catch Verstappen, and the feeling he was being left in the dark with his race situation, came out when he learned he was closer to Oscar Piastri ahead than the Red Bull he had been chasing.

As he pitted, Hamilton took the opportunity to encourage Adami to feed him more details about his race.

“10 cars on blue flags”

Hamilton lost even more time in his second stint when he had to go through lapped traffic all over again. Half the field was compressed into a single queue by this stage.

“Have I been dead slow this whole race?”

As Hamilton grew more concerned about his position in the race, another of his queries went unanswered.

“You’re not answering the question”

Hamilton kept pushing Adami to put him in the picture about his race situation, and eventually got the unwelcome news he had fallen far behind the leaders. After the race, when Hamilton asked Adami if he was “upset”, no response was broadcast.

HISTORY MADE: ROMAN SHOGDZHIEV BECOMES YOUNGEST INTERNATIONAL MASTER EVER

At just 10 years, 3 months, and 21 days old, Roman Shogdzhiev from Russia has shattered the record for the youngest International Master in chess history, beating the previous mark held by Argentina’s Faustino Oro by over five months.

Shogdzhiev clinched the title after tying for first with 7/9 at the RadnickiChess May IM Tournament in Belgrade. This result earned him his final IM norm and pushed his rating over the 2400 threshold—sealing the deal for the title.

Already a double world youth champion, Shogdzhiev burst into the spotlight at age eight when he defeated five grandmasters at the 2023 World Blitz & Rapid Championship, catching the attention of Magnus Carlsen. Since then, he has continued to dominate in speed chess, regularly beating elite-level players.

Trained by seven grandmasters—including former world no.13 GM Evgeny Tomashevsky—and homeschooled to focus entirely on chess, Roman’s journey has been intense and laser-focused.

"I want to be a world champion. And this year, I want to achieve a grandmaster norm. I think it’s realistic," Shogdzhiev said in a recent interview.

His next appearance will be at the World Rapid & Blitz Team Championship in London this June. The chess world will be watching.

XABI ALONSO PAYS TRIBUTE TO PREDECESSOR CARLO ANCELOTTI AT REAL MADRID

The Spanish giants confirmed the appointment of their former midfielder on a three-year contract on Sunday.

Xabi Alonso paid tribute to his predecessor Carlo Ancelotti as he was formally unveiled as the new Real Madrid manager on Monday.

The Spanish giants confirmed the appointment of their former midfielder on a three-year contract on Sunday.

Ancelotti, who guided the club to three Champions League triumphs and two LaLiga successes across two spells, stood down after Saturday’s final game of the season against Real Sociedad.

Alonso is rated as one of the game’s brightest young coaches, having taken Bayer Leverkusen to Bundesliga title success last year.

The 43-year-old, who played 236 matches for Real from 2009-2014, said at his official presentation: “It is a very special day and I am going to have it marked on my calendar for life.

“I am very happy to be here, in my home. I have been away for some years but the connection with Real Madrid has always been there.

“It is the start of a new era and I want to thank the president for having the confidence and thinking I am the right person to lead this new era, which I will face with energy and enthusiasm.

“An era with Ancelotti has closed. He was my coach, he made his mark on me and was a great influence. Without his teachings I would not be here.

“I carry his legacy with honour and I am proud to be in a place where he did so well. I hope to be able to fulfil expectations.”

Alonso takes over a team that finished second in LaLiga to Barcelona this term and exited the Champions League after defeat to Arsenal in the quarter-finals.

Alonso, who also amassed 113 Spain caps and had a five-year spell at Liverpool in his playing career, said: “We are stating a new age and I feel we have a great team.

“That gives me reason to come here with energy and motivation to get the best out of them and build a good team.

“We can achieve important things, worthy of Real Madrid and the titles we have won.

“I want to pass the emotions to the fans and that they enjoy and are proud of the team.”

WHAT IS A FALSE 9?

ERIK TEN HAG SUCCEED

Erik ten Hag has been confirmed as the new manager of Bundesliga side Bayer Leverkusen.

Ten Hag, who had been out of work since being sacked by Manchester United last October, replaces Xabi Alonso as boss after the Spanish coach left to join Real Madrid.

Leverkusen finished second in the Bundesliga this season but still boast much of the squad that helped them win the title in a historic unbeaten league campaign in 2023-24.

ESPN reported on Saturday that Ten Hag and his representatives held constructive talks with the Bundesliga side and now the agreement has been made official.

Ten Hag, 55, spent just over two seasons at Old Trafford before being dismissed amid a poor run of results just five months after winning the FA Cup. However, Man United have continued to struggle since the Dutch coach's departure.

His replacement Ruben Amorim has managed just seven Premier League wins on the way to a 15th-placed finish, while the club also lost the Europa League final to Tottenham Hotspur.

Before joining United, Ten Hag won three Eredivisie titles with Ajax and led the team to a Champions League semifinal in 2018-19. He has coached in Germany before, having managed Bayern Munich II from 2013 to 2015.

"With Erik ten Hag we have brought in an experienced coach with impressive success on the pitch. His six title wins at Ajax were exceptional," Leverkusen's sporting managing director Simon Rolfes said in a statement.

"With three league titles and two domestic cup wins he and Ajax dominated Dutch football from 2018 to 2022. And Erik demonstrated his quality as a coach with the ensuing success at Manchester United under difficult circumstances at times."

In his new role, Ten Hag may have to do without Leverkusen's star performer, Florian Wirtz, who has been strongly linked with a transfer away this summer. Sources have told ESPN that Liverpool are leading the race for the Germany international's signature.

Ten Hag said Leverkusen are: "One of the best clubs in Germany and also among the top clubs in Europe. The club offers outstanding conditions, I've been very impressed with the discussions of the management.

"I've come to Leverkusen to continue with the ambition shown in recent years. It's an attractive challenge to set up something together in this period of change and develop an ambitious team."
