AUSTRALIAN OPEN 2025 DRAW: WHO WILL THE GREEKS PLAY?

Playing his first Grand Slam since reaching the 2022 US Open quarter-finals, Nick Kyrgios faces British world No.86 Jacob Fearnley, provided he can overcome an abdominal strain that forced his withdrawal from an exhibition match this week in Melbourne.

It’s a good outcome for Kyrgios who has entered the event with a protected ranking after his long injury lay-off.

Fearnley doesn’t necessarily represent a tough encounter for Kyrgios.

The 29-year-old said serving is off the cards for a few days to give himself every chance to be fit for the start of the Open on Sunday.

He’ll carefully monitor the final stages of his preparations for his home slam after a fresh injury threatened his involvement.

Thanasi Kokkinakis has drawn Roman Safiullin, in what will be the pairs first ever meeting, while Stefanos Tsitsipas, who is 11th seed, comes up against Alex Michelsen.

The two have played once before in Tokyo last year where the American bested the Greek.

On the women’s side, 31st seed Maria Sakkari comes up against Camila Osorio.

The Australian Open begins on Sunday. Schedules are released at approximately 6pm AEDT on the day prior to play.

All four are scheduled to play on Sunday January 12, with exact times to be confirmed. Subject to change*

TSITSIDOSA ERA ENDS AS BADOSA ANNOUNCES SPLIT WITH TSITSIPAS

Reuters

Former world number two Paula Badosa is no longer in a romantic relationship with fellow tennis player Stefanos Tsitsipas after nearly a year together in the spotlight, the Spaniard said.

Badosa and Tsitsipas made their relationship official on social media during last year's French Open and have often been seen at each other's matches, while also posting pictures on their joint Instagram account.

But the 26-year-old Badosa, who has fallen to number 126 in the world with a string of injuries derailing her career, said that the sport's power couple dubbed Tsitsidosa by fans had split amicably.

"After careful consideration and many cherished moments together, Stefanos and I have decided to amicably part ways," Badosa wrote in an Instagram story on Sunday. "We have shared a journey filled with love and learning, and it is as friends with immense mutual respect that we now choose to move forward on our own paths.

"We are grateful for the support of our friends, family, and all who have been part of our story. As we transition into this new chapter of our lives, we continue to wish each other nothing but the best in all our endeavours."

Former French Open quarter-finalist Badosa said recently that doctors had told her it would be complicated to continue her career because of her chronic back pain.

Twice Grand Slam runner-up Tsitsipas crashed out of his Madrid Masters opener last month but the 25-year-old has had a good run of form on clay otherwise.

He won the Monte Carlo Masters and finished runner-up in Barcelona to prime himself for the French Open which will begin on May 26.

ALCARAZ, SWIATEK ADVANCE AT INDIAN WELLS

USA TODAY Sports

Defending champion Carlos Alcaraz moved into the fourth round at Indian Wells on Sunday with a 6-2 6-3 win over Felix Auger-Aliassime.

Third seed Jannik Sinner also advanced with a 6-3 6-4 win over Jan-Lennard Struff while 11th seed Stefanos Tsitsipas beat home hope Frances Tiafoe 6-3 6-3.

In the women's draw, world number one Iga Swiatek powered past Czech Linda Noskova 6-4 6-0.

Spaniard Alcaraz, who next plays Fabian Marozsan, said one of the keys to defending his title was to put the previous year's victory out of his mind.

"I think the first thing that you have to do if you want to defend the title is you forget about you won the title last year," said the 20-year-old.

"It's about being yourself, being at 100% every day if you want to do a good results here".

Alcaraz also said the ankle injury which forced him to withdraw from the Rio Open last month was not an issue during his matches.

"I'm not going to say I forget about it, but in matches, I forget all about it," he added. "I'm moving very well. I don't think about the ankle in matches, in training. But off the court, of course, I have to take care of it."

TSITSIPAS HOPES EMOTIONS OF 2023 WILL BOOST AUSTRALIAN OPEN TITLE BID

Reuters

Stefanos Tsitsipas hopes to tap into "big moments" from his 2023 Australian Open campaign to fuel his quest to reach back-to-back finals, the Greek seventh seed said after easing past Frenchman Luca Van Assche to reach the fourth round on Friday.

The 25-year-old fell to 10-times champion Novak Djokovic in the title clash last year, but not before winning an epic five-setter in the fourth round against young gun Jannik Sinner and impressive displays against Jiri Lehecka and Karen Khachanov.

Tsitsipas, who eased past Frenchman Van Assche 6-3 6-0 6-4 and takes on American 12th seed Taylor Fritz next, said he would use the emotions he felt last year to mentally prepare for the challenges that lie ahead.

"I approach these situations and these experiences with a lot of humility and I'm always trying to get them better. What I mean by that is make them more emotional and create a bigger glory mentally in my mind," Tsitsipas told reporters.

"These moments are glorious, especially when you're able to overcome them and win matches to go to the next sort of level of yourself as a tennis player and they count a lot for me."

DJOKOVIČ,SABALENKA GO THROUGH AFTER JAUBER OUSTED TALENTED TEEN

Reuters

Novak Djokovic fought off another feisty challenge to reach the third round of the Australian Open on Wednesday after women's champion Aryna Sabalenka made more serene progress and Ons Jabeur crashed out at the hands of a schoolgirl.

Top 10 seeds Coco Gauff, Barbora Krejcikova, Beatriz Haddad Maia, Jannik Sinner, Andrey Rublev and Stefanos Tsitsipas all got through their second-round contests in varying conditions as Melbourne lived up to its reputation for changeable weather.

Rain washed out more than three hours of play on the outer courts at the start of the day but the skies had long cleared by the time Djokovic took to the court where he has won 10 of his 24 Grand Slam titles.

As in his four-hour first round clash against qualifier Dino Prizmic, the 36-year-old Serbian looked in full pomp in the opening set against Australian Alexei Popyrin but lost the second.

The aggressive Popyrin, backed by a crowd in full voice, had set points in the third set but Djokovic saved them and, riled by an exchange with a fan in the crowd, ran out a 6-3 4-6 7-6(4) 6-3 winner.

DJOKOVIC EASES PAST MONFILS, ALCARAZ HOLDS OFF PAUL IN CINCINNATI

USA TODAY Sports

Novak Djokovic cruised past Gael Monfils and Carlos Alcaraz fended off in-form American Tommy Paul to reach the Cincinnati Open quarter-finals on Thursday while other top seeds Daniil Medvedev and Stefanos Tsitsipas were sent packing.

Djokovic, twice a winner in Cincinnati, dominated the baseline rallies in his 6-3 6-2 win over Monfils and extended his perfect record against the Frenchman to 19-0 - the most lopsided unbeaten ATP head-to-head record in the Open Era.

The Serbian made the most of a loose service game from Monfils and broke to love at 5-3 in the first set to close it out.

After racing to a 5-0 lead in the second he faltered on his first attempt to serve it out, but completed the win two games later in an hour and eight minutes. Djokovic will next face home favorite Taylor Fritz.

MURRY'S NIGHT-TIME DRAMA ENDS ON A WIMBLEDON CLIFF-HANGER

Reuters

If guts and grit win grand slam titles just hand the Wimbledon trophy to Andy Murray right now.

Of course it doesn’t work like that though and the Scot must come back on Friday to earn a spot in the third round after an epic battle with Greek powerhouse Stefanos Tsitsipas was halted with the clock approaching 11pm local time on Thursday.

The scoreboard under the lights showed Murray leading the hard-fought contest 6-7(3) 7-6(2) 6-4.

It had been a fascinating match played out in a heady Centre Court atmosphere with nothing to separate twice champion Murray and his flaxen-haired fifth-seeded opponent.
