NEWCASTLE UNITED ANNOUNCE MATTHIAS JAISSLE AS SUCCESSOR TO EDDIE HOWE

Newcastle United have announced the hiring of Matthias Jaissle as the club’s new head coach after the departure of Eddie Howe late last month.

Jaissle, 38, was mentioned as the new boss on the same day as the first reports of Howe’s departure.

“When Newcastle United comes your way, you take notice,” Jaissle said in a statement on Newcastle’s web site. “The ambition of the club, the vision for the future and the opportunity ahead made this an incredibly compelling place to be.”

Jaissle’s playing days were spent largely at Hoffenheim, where he was a back. He started in management with Liefering in 2021, soon taking over for Jesse Marsch at Red Bull Salzburg, where he led the side to its first Champions League knockout phase. He won the Austrian Bundesliga in both of his seasons there, then went to Al-Ahli and won consecutive Asian Champions League Elite trophies.

“My teams are built on togetherness, hard work, intensity and a passion to improve every single day. I will bring full commitment, full energy and a determination to give everything I have to help this club achieve its ambitions.”

Newcastle have four friendlies in the next 12 days, higher-profile affairs with Valencia, Everton, Bayer Leverkusen, and Strasbourg. They opener their Premier League season at home to Liverpool on August 23.

Jaissle and his new club have a lot to do to hit the ground running, as Newcastle looks set to lose Bruno Guimaraes to Arsenal after selling Sandro Tonali to Spurs and Anthony Gordon to Barcelona.

Bruno Guimarães has been linked with a move to Arsenal.

Arsenal and Newcastle United have reportedly ‘reached an agreement’ over a fee for Brazil international Bruno Guimarães after weeks of rumours.

The Gunners are still looking for a new midfielder this summer with Arsenal keen to build on their Premier League title-winning campaign by bringing in quality over quantity.

It has become clear in recent weeks that Guimarães has emerged as their top target for that area of the team and the Brazil international has reportedly made it clear that he wants to join the north London side.

Some journalists have claimed that talks are ‘advanced’, while other more local journalists have pushed back on that, but, whatever the truth, it now seems inevitable like Guimarães will move to Arsenal after Eddie Howe left St James’ Park.

Giving an update on his YouTube channel on Thursday, transfer insider Fabrizio Romano said: “And then guys, on Arsenal, don’t forget the Bruno Guimarães story because Arsenal are expected to return to the table over next week for Bruno Guimarães.

“Arsenal want Bruno. Mikel Arteta considers Bruno a top priority, so Arsenal are expected to be back in direct negotiations with Newcastle from next week

“It’s going to be an important week of new contacts. Then if the deal can get done already next week or not, this depends on the negotiation on the two clubs.

“The player has agreed personal terms with Arsenal, so Arsenal and Bruno Guimaraes have an agreement.

“Mikel Arteta is pushing to get Bruno Guimaraes because Mikel Arteta considers Bruno Guimaraes the perfect midfielder for Arsenal project, but now Bruno is keen.”

Newcastle, Arsenal ‘agreement’ and deal now in ‘final stages’

And now French newspaper L’Equipe has revealed that Arsenal and Newcastle ‘have reached an agreement in principle’ for the transfer of Guimarães with a deal now in its ‘final stages’.

Arsenal have not been keen to reach Newcastle’s €100m asking price for the midfielder and, after two bids around €70m and €80m, they have finally come to an agreement.

The report adds: ‘Arsenal finally swayed Newcastle United by proposing a base price of €90 million on Friday, plus bonuses that are still to be negotiated, as well as agent fees.

‘If all goes through in the coming days, the Brazilian international (48 caps, 3 goals), a key player in Carlo Ancelotti’s midfield for the national team, will become an Arsenal player, a dream he has cherished for the past month.’

ESPN Brasil had reported that Newcastle and Guimarães have had an ‘amicable agreement’ in place that if Newcastle failed to qualify for the Champions League then he would be allowed to leave the club.

Newcastle United midfielder Bruno Guimarães is seemingly expected to be sold this summer amid links with Arsenal, as per the Telegraph’s Luke Edwards.

The Brazil international has been strongly linked with the Gunners and it seems Edwards is finally admitting that the feeling seems to be that his future is in serious doubt.

Eddie Howe has today left his position as Newcastle manager, with Edwards posting on X about how it looks like the likely Guimarães sale is seen as the final straw for the English tactician.

“Howe believes Bruno Guimarães will be sold this summer.. the final straw,” Edwards said in a follow-up to a previous post about Howe quitting Newcastle.

This is significant because Edwards has previously played down the Guimarães to Arsenal transfer stories, but it seems he’s finally receiving information that is more in line with what numerous other journalists have been reporting for a while.

Arsenal fans will hope this means there’s a major Guimarães update soon as he would be a hugely exciting addition to Mikel Arteta’s squad.

It’s been claimed that Guimarães is unhappy with Howe leaving, and it surely makes sense that all the change inside Newcastle has left everyone unsettled.

Guimarães could follow Anthony Gordon and Sandro Tonali in leaving NUFC this summer, while Alexander Isak left to join Liverpool last year.

This has all contributed towards the Magpies going majorly downhill, and it’s hard to imagine a world class player like Guimarães sticking around in those circumstances.

The 28-year-old would likely be a great fit at the Emirates Stadium, giving Arsenal more depth in the middle of the park after the club relied so heavily on Declan Rice and Martin Zubimendi playing 90 minutes twice a week for so much of last season.

All bets appear to be off on the manager front - with Jaissle seemingly a shoo-in to succeed Howe. Club officials are in advanced talks with the German and he could be in the dugout for the pre-season trip to Spain next week.

“I don't know what's gone on, whether it was the end of last season, whether it was the summer, whether he feels they can't continue to sell his best players. I'm led to believe it was Eddie's decision to leave. What I would say is thank you. Thank you to Eddie for what he's given us.

Tributes have been paid to the former Newcastle United footballer and manager, Kevin Keegan, who has died at the age of 75.

In a statement, his family said: "It is with immense sadness that we announce that Kevin Keegan has passed away at the age of 75.

Keegan, who also played for and managed the England national team, had been battling cancer and was surrounded by his wife and daughters in his final moments.

The family statement continued: "Kevin, a double Ballon D’or winner, was a much loved husband, father and grandfather. The family would like to thank Kevin’s incredible medical team for all their support.

"This is a hugely difficult time and they are requesting space and privacy."

The Newcastle United legend revealed he had cancer in January 2026, which later spread to stage four.

In 1992, Keegan made his first step into management at Newcastle, leading them into the Premier League and to within touching distance of the 1995-96 title, but they missed out to Manchester United.

A statement from Newcastle United called Keegan "the beating heart of the club for generations of supporters".

It said: "As a player, he brought world-class talent, ambition and belief to St. James’ Park, helping to transform perceptions of what Newcastle United could be.

"As a manager, he ignited our city. Kevin gave supporters hope and pride, and led a team whose style, spirit and passion captured the imagination of football fans around the world. He was so much more than an Entertainer.

"Above all that, Kevin forged an extraordinary bond with Newcastle, built on the roots of his father, Joe. He understood our people. He embraced the North East with a passion that was genuine and unwavering, and in return, he earned his rightful place in the hearts of millions.

"Kevin’s impact will not be measured by appearances or results. It will live on in the memories he created with club and country, the dreams he inspired wherever he went, and the generations of supporters around the world who fell in love with football because of him.

"At this profoundly sad time, we send our love and deepest sympathy to Kevin’s wife Jean, his family, friends and all who had the privilege of knowing and working alongside him.

"Today, we mourn the loss of a true giant of our history, and at the appropriate moment, we will carefully consider how we shape a lasting tribute to Kevin’s remarkable life and legacy.

Alan Shearer paid tribute to his hero and friend Kevin Keegan following the death of his former Newcastle manager at the age of 75.

Keegan was in charge at St James’ Park when the club paid a then world-record fee of £15million to sign Shearer in 1996.

“My Hero. My manager. My friend. Sleep easy Boss,” Shearer wrote on X.

After leaving St James’ Park in January 1997, a brief stint at Fulham followed before he became England manager in 1999 following Glenn Hoddle’s departure.

After overseeing a disappointing Euro 2000 campaign, Keegan resigned on the back of defeat by Germany at Wembley, the last match at the national stadium before it was rebuilt.

A spell at Manchester City followed and then an emotional return to Newcastle in 2008, but he only lasted eight months at St James’ Park following tensions with the board and owner Mike Ashley.

On the international stage, he scored 21 goals in 63 England appearances and played at the 1982 World Cup finals.

North East Mayor Kim McGuinness said:

“Kevin Keegan brought joy to so many of us in the North East and across the world. It is hard to believe someone with so much energy and passion is no longer with us.

"King Kev fought such a brave battle against cancer, and while today we will all mourn his passing, we should also find room to celebrate with a smile everything he achieved.”

Kevin Keegan has sadly passed away at 75 after battling with cancer throughout 2026. The former Newcastle manager's family have released an emotional statement sharing his final few moments.

The family said: "It is with immense sadness that we announce that Kevin Keegan has passed away at the age of 75.

"Kevin had been battling cancer and was surrounded by his wife and daughters in his final moments.

"A double Ballon D’or winner, Kevin was a much loved husband, father and grandfather.

"The family would like to thank Kevin’s incredible medical team for all their support. “This is a hugely difficult time and they are requesting space and privacy."

Keegan had said in May, during a talk-in at the Tyne Theatre: "I want to say goodbye. I didn’t get the chance when I left (Newcastle United) last time."

Back then Keegan, in great spirits, also said: "They said we have a top doctor with this new way of fighting what you have got. Which is stage four cancer.

“He was a Liverpool supporter so I went to meet him. I knew I wouldn’t be walking alone, if you know what I mean."

A club statement read: "We are devastated to learn of the passing of Kevin Keegan, one of the most iconic, influential and deeply loved figures in our club’s history.

Anthony Gordon's move to Barcelona this summer could end up landing Newcastle United millions due to three clauses inserted into the deal. While he's been at the centre of one of the biggest transfers of the summer, the Liverpudlian winger failed to impress for England against Ghana on Tuesday evening.

In fact, so far, he's looked a shadow of the man that the Catalan giants shelled out in excess of £69.3million for. Three Lions boss Thomas Tuchel elected to keep Gordon in his starting line-up for the tie with the Black Stars despite also underperforming in England's 4-2 win over Croatia last week.

Gordon's speed, directness and ability to race to the byline are just some of the reasons Barcelona chose to move for him over Marcus Rashford, who had impressed on loan at Barca last season. However, Gordon will do well to keep his place for England's clash with Panama on Saturday night.

Despite Gordon more often than not starring for Newcastle during his time in the North East, there'll be sections of the fanbase who believe they've had the better end of the deal with the player currently struggling at the World Cup.

He's signed on for five years in Spain and the figures involved are rather astonishing. His deal is set to expire in 2031 and it's thought he's pulling in £300,000 per week, for an annual salary of £15.6 million. Over the full five years of his contract, this amounts to around just shy of £80m.

Gordon, who joined Newcastle from Everton in 2023, cost the club £45m. The deal to take the attacker to the Camp Nou will see 15 per cent being paid to the Toffees.

With that in mind, the Magpies' trio of clauses mean there's a reality where they will bank much more than the initial fee for Gordon in the future.

Here we take a look at the trio of clauses, which were added to the deal by the club's sporting director Ross Wilson, and just how much Newcastle could bank from the deal.

The 60% Appearance Clause

Newcastle will receive £860,000 (€1m) per season if Gordon features in at least 60 per cent of Barcelona's fixtures, something he has never struggled to do during his time at St James' Park. If he stays fit and remains a regular starter, Newcastle will max this out at £4.3m (€5m) by the end of his contract.

The Silverware Clause

A further £4.3m (€5m) will be paid to Newcastle if Gordon helps Barcelona win trophies during his stint at the Camp Nou. This could bode well for the Magpies with Barcelona having won La Liga for the past two consecutive seasons.

Sell-On Clause

Newcastle also wisely inserted a sell-on clause into the deal. While the exact percentage has been kept under wraps, it will ensure that the North East outfit will take a cut of any future transfer fee. This is typically based on the sale's profit if Barcelona choose to cut ties with Gordon before his contract expires.

Premier League legend and former England international James Milner has announced his retirement from football at the age of 40.

The versatile midfielder left Brighton & Hove Albion at the end of the season when his contract expired after three years on the south coast. But instead of finding a new club, Milner has decided to call time on his illustrious career just months after breaking the record for most Premier League appearances in February.

Milner played for six teams in England's top flight. The 61-time England international came through at Leeds United before joining Newcastle United and then Aston Villa. He won the Premier League twice, FA Cup and League Cup at Manchester City before winning all there is to win under Jurgen Klopp at Liverpool.

Taking to X, Milner shared an emotional statement: "After 24 seasons in the @premierleague, it feels like the right time to bring an end to my playing career. From making my debut for @leedsunited, who I supported growing up, at the age of 16 and becoming the Premier League’s youngest scorer.

"I could never have dreamed of the journey I’ve been on, right through to not being able to lift my foot last year and then coming back to be part of @officialbhafc qualifying for Europe for the second time in their history at the age of 40.

"To have gone on to represent @nufc, @astonvilla, @mancity, @liverpoolfc and @officialbhafc — and not forgetting a memorable month at @officialstfc — has been an incredible privilege.

'SAUDI PROJECT IS OVER' - RICHARD KEYS CLAIMS PIF 'LOOKING TO SELL' NEWCASTLE UNITED FOR £1BN IN BOMBSHELL UPDATE

Newcastle United remain adamant that the Public Investment Fund are committed to the long-term project.

Disgraced former Sky Sports presenter Richard Keys has claimed the Public Investment Fund are actively looking to sell Newcastle United.

Well-connected in the region, the 68-year-old has worked for Qatari broadcaster beIN Sports since 2013. Keys was a vocal critic of the Saudi-backed takeover when the bid stalled - and temporarily broke down - in 2020.

An inquest is underway on Tyneside after Newcastle lost to bitter rivals Sunderland at St James’ Park on Sunday. Adding salt into the wounds, Keys has declared that PIF are giving up on the project and have placed a £1billion price tag to potential suitors.

“Another whisper I picked up recently - and I don’t think this will come as a surprise to anybody - I’m told the Saudis are looking to sell Newcastle,” he wrote in his personal blog. “Regulars know I’ve been saying for some time the project was over. Apparently, there are interested parties, but the Saudis want £1billion. £500million is nearer the mark.”

Newcastle United stance

Newcastle insiders are adamant that PIF remain in constant dialogue with the key shot-callers at St James’ Park. David Hopkinson - appointed CEO in September - runs the club on a day-to-day basis but any major decisions need to be signed off by the Saudi backers.

However, there has been a growing sense from supporters that the Middle Eastern investment fund have become distant from events at the Magpies. Fans are yet to be given an ultimate resolution on St James’ Park’s future despite being told to expect an update in “early 2025”.

Noises around the mooted training ground development have also gone quiet in recent months. While messaging from the top remains bullish, it is becoming a case of “actions, not words” that has left a section of Newcastle supporters to question their intention.

David Hopkinson makes 2030 vow

Speaking last month, new Toon CEO Hopkinson reiterated that the majority owners are ambitious about Newcastle. In words that have since become a hot topic on Tyneside, he doubled down on his mission to propel the club to global stardom by 2030.

“The No.1 thing I talk to the ownership about is ambition,” Hopkinson told talkSPORT. “That’s the magic word here, having the correct ambition.

“We have total alignment on that. This is a club that, by 2030, will be consistently contending for the top prizes in global football. We have a lot of wood to chop between here and there. When I see Newcastle United, everywhere I look, I see opportunity.”

Former Newcastle United defender Daryl Janmaat has opened up about the 'damage' a cocaine addiction inflicted on his life after his professional football career came to an end. Janmaat made his mark in the English top flight with both Newcastle and Watford during his playing days, whilst also spending a considerable period in the Netherlands.

The 36-year-old, who accumulated 34 caps for the Dutch national side throughout his career, spent two years at Newcastle before making the switch to Watford in 2016. Janmaat eventually departed Vicarage Road in 2020 to head back to his home country with ADO Den Haag, a club that now competes in the second tier of Dutch football.

Following his retirement from professional football in 2022, Janmaat went on to take up a role as technical manager at ADO Den Haag. The former Premier League ace has now spoken openly in an interview about the "damage" wrought by a cocaine addiction, as per the Mirror.

"I have three children who also hear and read things," Janmaat said, via Dutch newspaper AD. "I can't and don't want to go into all the details, but my cocaine addiction has caused a lot of damage."

The former Premier League star recounts how the conclusion of his professional football career, which came about after the ex-defender sustained a knee injury, was when his troubles began.

"I was supposed to get help from everyone and everything, but I was left to fend for myself. It was nothing," Janmaat added. "Suddenly, I lost the structure I'd had for years as a footballer.

"That was difficult. The cocaine addiction gradually crept in. You start lying to the people you love. That's terrible; I hurt a lot of people.

"The problems only started after I retired. As a player, everything is manageable: you go from training to training. From match to match.

"When all that disappeared and I felt completely out of place as technical manager at ADO, things went wrong. Very much so."

Janmaat also spoke candidly about how the addiction has affected his personal life. "I'm still officially married, but we're no longer together," he stated.

"The relationship wasn't going well, you know, but the addiction obviously didn't help. A lot of damage has been done, although we're on good terms again."

Janmaat now operates his own gym business in Scheveningen called High Power Gym, and has revealed how he managed to overcome being in a 'really, really bad' place to transform his life.

"Cocaine destroys a lot. My family and friends were there for me, but I let a lot of people down," Janmaat admitted. "You start lying and distorting things.

"That's exhausting, but above all, very painful. Was it life-threatening? Well, I was in deep, very deep.

"There were times when I was really, really bad, let's just say that. I had everything as a player, and I still do, actually. But a lot has happened in the meantime. Too much.

"Addiction is truly a battle, where you're at your wits' end. Literally. You're in a struggle; it really destroys a lot.

"In a clinic like that, you have therapy and counselling. After that, I went in a different direction. Yes, the right direction. Fortunately."

Joelinton scored his second Champions League goal of the season for Newcastle United as they beat Qarabag 3-2 at St James’ Park.

Joelinton couldn’t hide his frustration at being substituted early in Newcastle United’s 3-2 win over Qarabag despite scoring on the night.

The Brazilian made it 2-0 with just six minutes on the clock after Sandro Tonali opened the scoring at St James’ Park. But the remainder of the game proved to be a fairly disjointed affair for The Magpies, who had already effectively secured progress to the last-16 by winning the first leg 6-1 last week in Baku.

It was Joelinton’s second Champions League goal of the season, having also found the net in the 2-0 win over Athletic Club back in November.

But the 29-year-old was withdrawn early in the second half with the score at 3-1, much to his disappointment.

Joelinton gestured with his arms and made his frustration known to Howe as he made his way off the pitch. He also pointed as the match timer at St James’ Park displayed 54 minutes at the time of his substitution.

The match marked Joelinton’s first start after six games out with a groin injury.

Rather than deny and play down the clear disagreement with his player, Howe simply explained: “Joey always plays with passion. That’s what makes him the player he is.

“I’m trying to protect him and make sure we can use him next game. He’s had limited football and he’s important. We need to keep him fit.

“Same with Sven Botman. We’ve got to build their robustness up. But I love that he doesn’t want to come off. That’s him.”

NUFC duo at risk of suspension

Joelinton is also one booking away from suspension in the Champions League and picking up a yellow card in a tie that Newcastle had effectively already won would have been seen as a needless blow for Howe’s side.

The midfielder is set to be available for the first leg of the last-16 tie against either Barcelona or Chelsea next month but another yellow card would see him handed a one-match suspension having been booked twice previously in the Champions League this season.

Dan Burn is also one booking away from suspension while Malick Thiaw served his suspension on Tuesday after being booked in the first leg last week.

“I had to put 11 players out there,” Howe said, explaining his team selection. “With Malick suspended, Dan had to play because I wanted to rest Lewis Hall.

“It was about deciding who really needed it and who could get through the game. Thankfully, Dan and Joe didn’t get booked.

“You can’t go in with a mindset of worrying about that. Just play the game. We’ve got a fragile squad. A number of players are working to get back.

“The lads who’ve committed every performance have been magnificent.”

Chelsea have sounded out Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe about becoming their next manager, sources have told Football Insider.

The London giants are exploring the market for a replacement for Enzo Maresca, who left Stamford Bridge on New Year’s Day.

Howe, 48, is firmly on Chelsea‘s radar although it remains to be seen if he would leave Newcastle mid-season to join a club where managers have a notoriously short shelf life.

Chelsea’s interest comes at a time when Howe is being criticised by a section of Newcastle fans on social media for overseeing a mixed campaign at St James’ Park.

They are 13th in the Premier League, but are into the semi-finals of the Carabao Cup for the third time in four years and likely need just one point from their remaining two Champions League games to reach the knockout rounds of that competition for the first time in their history.

Liam Rosenior, the Strasbourg boss, is a leading contender to succeed Maresca after his two seasons in France working for Chelsea owners BlueCo, but it is understood that Chelsea are considering alternatives to Rosenior who have proven Premier League calibre.

Howe certainly fits the bill given his extensive experience at Newcastle, who he joined in November 2021, and Bournemouth, where he spent a decade during their extraordinary rise through the divisions before establishing them as a Premier League club.

Maresca’s departure from Stamford Bridge came against a backdrop of frustration with the ownership, who he felt were too involved in his decision-making.

He is not the first boss to leave Chelsea under a cloud since BlueCo’s arrival, and likely not the last, leading to questions about whether Howe would step in.

Howe is comfortable in his job at Newcastle, with no plans for him to be let go any time soon despite some speculative calls for his head from frustrated fans.

The Magpies still have ambitious plans for the future and hope he will be the one to lead them, although this is not the first time he has been linked with an exit.

Howe has long been tipped to become the next England manager, while Man United also considered him when Ruben Amorim was under increasing pressure.

Liam Rosenior update emerges in Chelsea next manager race

Despite sources confirming Chelsea plan to asses Premier League-proven bosses, Rosenior remains the leading contender to take over at Stamford Bridge.

Former Man United chief scout Mick Brown told Football Insider on 2 January that Rosenior is in pole position at Chelsea thanks to his relationship with BlueCo.

Meanwhile, he remains highly rated in coaching and management circles in England following his time at Hull City despite his surprising dismissal by the Tigers.

Brown first told Football Insider on 28 December that Rosenior is on Chelsea’s list of options to replace Maresca should they be forced to do so.

Following the boss’ dramatic resignation and suggestions he is being lined up for the Man City job, the Blues are now being made to act quickly to secure their next boss.

Newcastle United legend Alan Shearer has absolutely hammered the Magpies following their defeat to arch-rivals Sunderland. The Magpies' all-time leading goalscorer said his former side were rotten, pathetic, dreadful, and almost ran out of superlatives to describe the Wear-Tyne Derby defeat.

A Nick Woltemade own goal was all that separated the two sides, but it was a poor game that lacked any attacking intent from either side.

Shearer singled out Anthony Elanga and Anthony Gordon for their poor displays and felt that Eddie Howe got his team selection wrong.

Speaking on The Rest Is Football podcast, Shearer said: "I wasn't [okay]. Newcastle were dreadful.

"They were rotten and I was really shocked at how dreadful they were because, I mean, that is pathetic in any game, let alone in a derby game.

"Seriously, you're going to play in the biggest game of the season at your rivals and you've heard all the players all week, 'We know how much it means to the fans and we're going to do this and that.' Well, lads, they did nothing. They were awful, honestly."

Newcastle have won just once away in the Premier League all season, and Shearer didn't hold back in his criticism of the Newcastle manager either, adding: "Eddie made some big calls team-wise, and I thought Eddie got it wrong as well.

"The players who he picked didn't perform for him. Elanga was awful. Gordon was awful. Woltemade was awful. They offered nothing in forward positions."

Shearer got fed up with Gary Lineker and Micah Richards sniggering on the podcast, as he hit out: "Stop laughing you two d********s. You pair of... I wish I could say that word I'd call you that now."

The Newcastle icon then continued: "There was no desire, there was no energy, there was nothing. You go away to Sunderland, and who aren't a great team, and after half an hour, Sunderland had about 70 per cent possession, as if.

"I was thinking, 'Am I missing something here, are we going away to Arsenal or Man City here?'

"We're going away to Sunderland. Okay, they're hard to beat at home. They're really well organized and they're above us in the table but come on, they're not Barcelona or Real Madrid.

"Are we going to have a pop at them or have a go at least? There was nothing from Newcastle. It was really, really awful."

When asked by Richards if Sunderland could get a bit of credit, Shearer said: "Yeah, they deserved to win. They were up for the fight.

"They had the energy, they won every second ball. They won every challenge. Well done, yeah. Newcastle were terrible."

Italy trail leaders Norway by three points and still have a chance of taking first place and the group's sole direct qualifying spot.

But new coach Gattuso has a lot to think about ahead of October's return fixtures with Estonia and Israel, whose players donned black armbands in honour of the victims of Monday morning's deadly shooting at a bus stop in east Jerusalem carried out Palestinian gunmen.

Nominal home team Israel would have been good value for the draw, as Kean had previously twice pulled Italy out of the mire following Manuel Locatelli's early own-goal and a fabulous Dor Peretz strike in the 52nd minute in a largely empty Nagyerdei Stadium.

Monday's match had cast a political cloud over Gattuso's first fixtures in charge of Italy due to Israel's offensive in the Gaza Strip.

And the Italians on the pitch looked equally uninterested in the match come kick-off, with Israel snappier and more aggressive than the four-time world champions.

Locatelli almost made up for his own-goal when he struck the bar with an acrobatic volley in the 31st minute, seconds before Kean wasted a great opportunity from a Gianluca Mancini cut-back.

But 10 minutes later Kean thumped a low drive past Daniel Peretz after collecting a knockdown from strike partner Mateo Retegui.

And Kean came to the rescue again nine minutes after the break, levelling with another powerful low shot just seconds after Peretz put Israel ahead for the second time with a brilliant first-time effort.

Politano finally put Italy ahead with a great volley after more fine work from Retegui, and when Raspadori rolled home the fourth it seemed the away team looked out of the woods.

But it took Tonali's unusual winner to finally secure the three points after uncharacteristically bad defending nearly left Italy's hopes of qualification hanging by a thread.

Armed police have arrested the son of a former Premier League footballer outside McDonald's for drink driving. 

Tom Huckerby, 25, of Norwich, Norfolk, found himself in cuffs at a branch of the fast food restaurant chain in his hometown on July 18. 

His father is Norwich City star Darren Huckerby, 49, a forward who also played for Newcastle United and Manchester City, among others, before retiring in 2009. 

Huckerby - who passed his test just six months ago - was behind the wheel of his first car, a VW Polo, at the Drive Thru on Barrett Road with a friend as his passenger. 

Officers discovered he was nearly double the drink-drive limit, at some 63 micrograms of alcohol per 100 millilitres of breath - when the limit is 35. 

The amateur footballer pleaded guilty to drink driving on Friday at Norwich Magistrates' Court and was slapped with a 15-month driving ban and £730 fine. 

Speaking outside court, he explained the police were armed because his vehicle was suspected of being linked to a firearms offence connected to a previous owner. 

Huckerby added McDonald's staff were the ones to call the police suspecting the pair had been drinking, after his pal leaned over to loudly hold down his car horn.

But he said he was shocked to find himself arrested.

Huckerby, like his father, is also a keen footballer, as a centre-back for local club Harleston Town, after previously playing for Wroxham FC.     

It comes after his younger brother Benjamin Huckerby, then 18, was in 2020 locked up for three years in a young offender's institution. 

Huckerby, along with Levi Licorish and Lucas Philpott, staged a spate of robberies in Norwich city centre, near the Vue cinema. 

With their faces covered, they approached members of the public and threatened them with a hammer to force them to hand over their belongings. 

One teen had a necklace taken and another had an Apple watch stolen in two robberies committed within mere minutes of each other. 

The trio of violent thieves also tried to rob a third youngster but did not succeed. 

After his youngest son was sentenced, Norwich City star Mr Huckerby said he was 'incredibly disappointed' by the lad's actions. 

He said in a statement issued through solicitor Chris Brown: 'We made our home in Norwich because we fell in love with the city, county and people when we arrived in 2003.

'I have always tried to pay back some of the welcome by trying to hold the highest standards on and off the pitch, helping the local community when I can and through things like the charitable trust we set up.

'So as a family we are incredibly disappointed and hurt by Ben's actions, which go against everything we stand for.'

Mr Huckerby played 203 times for the Canaries between 2003 and 2008, scoring 48 goals.

Alexander Isak has said farewell to Newcastle United and the club's supporters after completing his British record transfer to Liverpool on deadline day.

The striker's move to Anfield was completed late on Monday night, costing the Reds a whopping £125million. Arne Slot's side had tracked the Sweden international all summer and had failed with a £110m offer at the start of last month.

Newcastle were adamant that Isak was not for sale despite the 25-year-old training alone and not featuring in any of the Magpies' first three games of the season.

Newcastle's moves for Nick Woltemade from Stuttgart and Yoane Wissa from Brentford paved the way for Isak to replace Florian Wirtz as Liverpool's club record signing.

Now on duty with Sweden for their World Cup qualification campaign, Isak has made reference to his former employees on Instagram. "I want to express my gratitude to my teammates, the staff, and above all, the city of Newcastle and all the amazing supporters for the three unforgettable years we shared together," he said.

"Together, we have written history and brought the club to the place where it truly belongs. It has been an honour to be part of the journey from reaching the Champions League to winning the first trophy in over 70 years.

"Forever grateful. Thank you, Newcastle."

Isak's comments will be received better than those of agent Vlado Lemic. When asked by Jim White on talkSPORT to come on and explain the transfer, the Croatian said: "It's nice when you have someone to be with, but it's even nicer when you know who you'll never be with again."
