TANZANIA JUNIORS WRAP REGION 4 GOLF TOURNEY WITH VALUABLE LESSON

MAURITIUS: TANZANIA’s junior golf team concluded their campaign at the 2025 Region 4 Under-18 Golf Championship with a determined performance on Thursday at Tamarina Golf Club in Mauritius.

The three-day, 54-hole stroke play tournament, held from Tuesday to Thursday, featured juniors’ national teams from six countries across the region.

Organised under the auspices of The R&A and the Africa Golf Confederation, the event offered young golfers a crucial opportunity for international experience and development.

Tanzania finished fifth overall with a combined team score of 789 gross (+141) after rounds of 262, 260 and 267 in the first, second and third days, respectively.

In the final round, Ibrahim Juma and team captain Shufaa Twalib led the team with identical scores of 88 gross each, while Ramadhani Yasin Mohamed contributed 91 strokes.

Loyce Emilias, who faced challenges throughout the event, posted a 130, which did not count toward the team score.

Reunion clinched the championship with a total of 676 gross (+28), followed by Kenya in second place with 707 (+59).

Host nation Mauritius claimed third with 733 (+85), while Uganda settled for fourth on 757 (+109).

Tanzania placed fifth ahead of Madagascar, which finished sixth with 801 (+153).

The Tanzanian delegation was led by professional golfer and former national team player Angel Eaton of the Tanzania People’s Defence Forces (TPDF) Lugalo Golf Club in Dar es Salaam.

Her mentorship was instrumental in guiding the young team through the competition.

Speaking ahead of the tournament, Johnson John, Coordinator at the Tanzania Golf Union (TGU), underscored the importance of such regional events.

“This tournament is crucial for our juniors to gain international experience, learn and prepare for bigger championships,” he said.

“Golf instils discipline and helps shape them into responsible ambassadors for the country, so this is ideal opportunity for our juniors.”

He also expressed appreciation for the support of coaches Angel Eaton and Athumani Chiundu, as well as the parents and sponsors who made the team’s participation possible.

Louis Oosthuizen completed back-to-back wins on the DP World Tour with a two-shot victory at the Mauritius Open on Sunday, overcoming early jitters to card a final round 69 at the new La0y Reserve Golf Club, a course he helped to design.

The South African last week claimed the Alfred Dunhill Championship at Leopard Creek for his first tournament success in five years, and he repeated the feat six days later with a 17 under-par score, two ahead of England’s Laurie Canter (68, 15 under-par).

Frenchman Antoine Rozner made a strong start his Mauritius Open title defence with a 10-under-par 62 for a one-shot lead after Thursday’s first round at the Heritage La Reserve Golf Club.

Rozner, who started on the back nine, hit an eagle and 10 birdies and said he had hopes of scoring 59 but bogeyed two of his last four holes.
