NEW 187-POUND LIGHT CRUISERWEIGHT DIVISION BEGINS JANUARY 1

British boxing will introduce a new light cruiserweight division on January 1, 2027, creating a 187-pound stopping point between light heavyweight and cruiserweight.

The British Boxing Board of Control has confirmed the new championship weight class will bridge the biggest current gap between two divisions, with 25 pounds separating the 175-pound light heavyweight and 200-pound cruiserweight limits.

Light cruiserweight will initially be available across Area, English, Celtic and British titles.

New 187-Pound Division

The BBBofC has outlined how the new championship division will work.

“The British Boxing Board of Control will be introducing a new Championship Weight Class with effect from 1st January 2027.

“The new division will be placed between the current Light Heavyweight division of 12st 7lbs, and the Cruiserweight division of 14st 4lbs.

“Light Cruiserweight will have a Championship limit of 13st 5lbs (187lbs), and as such will bridge the current largest weight gap between two divisions in the sport (25lbs) and will be available across Area, English, Celtic and British Titles.”

Adding a bridge between 175 and 200 pounds is a solid move, particularly for fighters who struggle to make light heavyweight but are undersized when competing against full cruiserweights.

It can be questioned, however, whether the change could have been made years ago.

The timing also comes during another period of change and uncertainty for boxing’s weight structure.

Less than three months ago, the WBA scrapped its own bridgerweight division after the 200-to-224-pound category struggled to establish sufficient depth.

The WBC continues to recognize bridgerweight at 224 pounds, effectively giving the sport another step-up on the opposite side of cruiserweight.

Bridgerweight Future Uncertain

Boxing is already dealing with competing weight structures.

The WBC introduced bridgerweight in 2020 to accommodate fighters between cruiserweight and heavyweight, but the concept has never been universally adopted.

The WBA subsequently introduced its own version before abandoning the division in June 2026.

Starting another weight class now, when confusion already reigns over the Ali Act and the future of bridgerweight remains uncertain, may not be the ideal move.

However, there is one significant difference.

The BBBofC has announced light cruiserweight for its Area, English, Celtic and British championships rather than attempting to introduce another universally recognized world division.

If light cruiserweight stays exclusively regional to the UK, the rest of boxing can carry on regardless.

For British fighters caught between 175 and 200 pounds, another championship option will officially be available from January 1. But when they reach world level, they will have to decide whether to compete at 175 or 200 pounds, potentially adding even more confusion.

JOSEPH PARKER FACES POSSIBLE TWO YEAR SUSPENSION AFTER COCAINE APPEARS IN PRE FIGHT TESTING

A pre fight test collected on the day of the Fabio Wardley contest reportedly detected cocaine, creating uncertainty about Joseph Parker’s immediate future in the heavyweight division.

Joseph Parker, New Zealand’s former WBO interim heavyweight champion, is facing a possible boxing suspension after a pre-fight drug test returned positive for cocaine. The sample was collected by the Voluntary Anti-Doping Agency (VADA) on October 25, the same day Parker fought Fabio Wardley at London’s O2 Arena.

Traces of the cocaine metabolite benzoylecgonine were detected. This substance can remain in the system for approximately four days, suggesting exposure occurred during fight week.

Parker’s promoter David Higgins and VADA have been contacted for comment. Parker is currently on holiday and has not responded publicly.

B-Sample And Regulatory Process

Parker can request his B-sample be tested, though historically these results match the A-sample. The Voluntary Anti-Doping Agency findings will be reviewed by UK Anti-Doping (UKAD) and the British Boxing Board of Control (BBBofC).

Cocaine, classified as a recreational drug rather than performance-enhancing, could result in a maximum two-year suspension. If Parker proves no negligence or intent, the ban could be reduced to a shorter period.

The 33-year-old has a distinguished career, facing top heavyweights including Anthony Joshua, Deontay Wilder, and Dillian Whyte. Parker lost to Joshua and Whyte in 2018 but defeated Wilder in 2023.

Parker captured the WBO interim heavyweight title in 2024 by defeating Zhilei Zhang, recovering from two knockdowns to secure the decision. He was scheduled to fight then-IBF champion Daniel Dubois in February 2025, but Dubois withdrew due to illness. Parker instead defended his interim title against Martin Bakole, stopping him in two rounds.

Parker entered the Wardley fight as a favorite but was stopped in the 11th round. The result caused some controversy, as many believed the referee ended the bout prematurely, and Parker was leading on points at the time.

Prior to Wardley, Parker was positioned as a leading contender to face undisputed champion Oleksandr Usyk in 2026. His loss now complicates that trajectory.

Statement From Promotions

Queensberry Promotions, led by Frank Warren, released a brief statement regarding the failed test:

“The Voluntary Anti-Doping Association [VADA] last night informed all required parties that Joseph Parker returned an adverse finding following an anti-doping test conducted on October 25 in relation to his bout with Fabio Wardley. While the matter is investigated further, no additional comment will be made at this time.”

Parker’s positive test comes amid a period of resurgence. After a 2022 loss to Joe Joyce, he won six consecutive bouts, including victories over Wilder, Zhang, and Bakole, re-establishing himself as a top contender.

With Usyk recovering from injury and Wardley now emerging as a leading contender, Parker’s suspension could delay his return to title contention. Despite this setback, Parker has indicated he intends to continue competing once eligible, leaving the door open for potential high-profile matchups in the heavyweight division.

ANTHONY JOSHUA VS. JAKE PAUL 'BIBLICAL FIGHT CAN HAPPEN ' AS WEMBLEY PLAN AND DATE REVEALED

Anthony Joshua's next match inside the squared circle could be against Jake Paul with Wembley Stadium being lined up as a potential venue for the farcical fight

Anthony Joshua could face Jake Paul early next year with Wembley Stadium being lined up as a potential venue for the farcical fight.

The two-time heavyweight champion and Olympic gold medallist is seriously considering taking on the motormouth YouTube star in a real fight.

The British Boxing Board of Control would come under serious fire if they sanctioned a bout between such an experienced fighter and Paul, who has beaten only old former boxers in Mike Tyson and Julio Cesar Chavez Jnr as well as MMA fighters and other novices.

Paul, 28, lost to Tommy Fury when they boxed in Saudi Arabia back in 2023. Yet after 35-year-old Joshua’s promoter Eddie Hearn insisted his man was really considering taking on the YouTuber, Paul’s man Nakisa Bidarian told Sky Sports talks are underway.

He said: “I think the fight can absolutely happen. I'm looking at it as Jake versus Joshua, which is quite biblical, and it's quite impactful in many ways.

"I think size wise, we can get comfortable with it, and I think experience wise, Jake is learning very fast and growing, and Joshua is a little long in the tooth. So it could be a very interesting matchup, and we're actively discussing it with Matchroom.”

Joshua is currently rehabilitating after elbow surgery and not ready to return until December at the earliest. Hearn says he’s still intent on facing Tyson Fury and a Paul fight would be a warm-up.

Yet there seems little benefit other than financially of facing someone with 13 pro fights and no amateur experience before taking on Fury.

Saudi boxing power broker Turki Alalshikh said he would be interested in staging the fight and financially backing it as he is not a fan of the fights Paul has and wants to rid him from the sport. That’s why the Middle East is also on the table as a potential host.

Bidarian added: “I think we're looking at it happening at the start of 2026. It's public that AJ was taking a little time away, I think he had a little surgery. “So once he's ready, and once Jake is ready, we're going to squarely focus on that.

"It's a fight that Jake wants to do, and that's a discussion we've had at length, and he feels very confident about where he is in his career and his chances of upsetting Anthony Joshua.

“Wembley's definitely a possibility. Jake said he'd like to do it there. He likes the idea of going in and hearing 90,000 people booing him!"
