SPRING TRAINING ROUNDUP: ASTROS BEAT NETS IN 10-8 SLUGFEST

Shay Whitcomb hit two RBI doubles and Jacob Melton smashed the eventual game-winning home run as the Houston Astros put together 10 consecutive runs and held off the host Washington Nationals 10-8 in a spring training game Friday in Palm Beach, Fla.
Melton's two-run homer in the seventh inning put the Astros ahead 9-4, and Joey Loperfido added a run-scoring double in the eighth before Washington pushed back. Alex Call hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the frame and two runs scored on his fielder's choice in the ninth -- one on a throwing error -- before Houston put the game away.
Hunter Brown (1-0) got the win with two innings of relief for Houston, in which he allowed one run, two hits and one walk. Grae Kessinger went 2-for-3 with two RBIs and two runs for the Astros.
Nats reliever Jake Irvin (0-1) was shelled for seven runs (six earned) on five hits and two walks in 1 2/3 innings. CJ Abrams opened the scoring with a solo homer in the first and an RBI single in the second to steer Washington to a 4-0 lead. The teams combined for 22 hits.
Pirates 12, Rays 8
Gilberto Celestino hit a grand slam and totaled five RBIs, Jared Triolo hit a three-run homer and host Pittsburgh outlasted Tampa Bay in Bradenton, Fla.
Bryan Reynolds hit his second homer of spring training in the bottom of the first after the Rays had opened a 3-0 lead. Mitch Keller (1-0) got the win despite allowing three runs on four hits and two walks in two innings. He struck out two.
Jose Siri had three RBIs on a sacrifice fly, a fielder's choice and a single for the Rays. Reliever Erasmo Ramirez (0-1) gave up Triolo's home run.

BRAVES' ACUÑA JR. BECOMES FOUNDING MEMBER OF 40-70 CLUB

ATLANTA -- Ronald Acuña Jr. wasn't going to let Wednesday's game end without making even more MLB history.
His steal of second base in the 10th inning of a hard-fought matchup between the Atlanta Braves and Chicago Cubs was Acuña's second of the night and 70th this season, making him the first player in MLB history to hit at least 40 home runs and steal 70 bases.
It came just moments before teammate Ozzie Albies drove him home for the winning run, setting off pandemonium at Truist Park as the Braves secured the No. 1 seed in the National League playoffs.
"Very happy, mostly that we were able to win," Acuña said through an interpreter after the 6-5 victory. "I'm extremely happy to have created the 40-70 club."
Acuña has 41 homers, extending a historic season that already saw him become the first 40-50 and 40-60 player. He is the second Braves player with 70 steals in a season since 1900, joining Otis Nixon in 1991 (72).
"It was one of those numbers that wasn't impossible but seemed impossible," Acuña said.

BRAVES CLINCH SIXTH STRAIGHT NL TITLE WITH WIN OVER PHILLIES: HOW ATLANTA GOT HERE
The Atlanta Braves locked up the National League East division title Wednesday night with a 4-1 win over the Philadelphia Phillies. Here’s what you need to know:
- This marks the Braves’ sixth consecutive NL East crown. They became the first MLB team to clinch a 2023 playoff berth with Sunday’s win against the Pirates.
- Atlanta improves to 96-50 on the season — the best record in the majors — and now leads second-place Philadelphia by 17 games in the division.
- The Braves won Wednesday’s series finale at Citizens Bank Park behind a seven-inning, nine-strikeout outing by Spencer Strider and a two-run homer from Austin Riley.
Strider, Riley guide title-clinching win
Riley hit a two-run homer in the first inning and added a sacrifice fly in the third, more than enough offense on a night when Strider continued his regular-season dominance of the Phillies with seven innings of four-hit, one-run ball for his majors-leading 17th win.
Kevin Pillar added an RBI double in the fourth as the Braves built a 4-1 lead, which would stand. The Phillies got a run in the first inning after Strider walked two of the first three batters and Bryston Stott hit a two-out single, but the Atlanta fireballer retired the next nine batters and 19 of the last 22 that he faced.
Strider had two walks with nine strikeouts, the 21st time in 29 starts that the MLB strikeout leader has recorded at least nine Ks this season.

MLB ROUNDUP: SHOHEI OHTANI WINS | HOMERS IN TEXAS

Shohei Ohtani starred on the mound and at the plate, Mickey Moniak delivered the tying hit and the go-ahead home run, and the Los Angeles Angels held on to beat the Texas Rangers 5-3 on Thursday in Arlington, Texas.
The Angels won three of four in the series.
Ohtani (6-2) allowed two runs in six innings, and he also hit his 22nd homer. Moniak finished with three hits, including an eighth-inning solo shot.
Texas starter Nathan Eovaldi (9-3) gave up three runs in seven innings. Nathaniel Lowe and Adolis Garcia each had two hits and an RBI for the Rangers.
