Rafael Nadal reveals there are days when his foot "does not let me live in peace" and hurts to the point where he can't even go down the stairs. Nadal, who was diagnosed with Muller-Weiss syndrome in 2005, was dealing with major foot issues around the 2022 French Open.
At the start of this season, Nadal suffered a hip injury when he sustained an injury to his psoas muscle. After failing to recover in time for this year's French Open, Nadal decided to have surgery on his psoas muscle. Nadal is expected to miss the remainder of the 2023 season but he is targeting to be ready for the 2024 Australian Open. "[The pain isn't gone] but now it is controllable.
There are times when the foot does not let me live in peace, it is difficult for me to even go down the stairs, and that happens sometimes. If it hurts it is difficult to be happy, my character changes when it hurts more than necessary," Nadal told Movistar.
Nadal on his comeback expectations
In June, Nadal turned 37.
When Nadal returns, he will be a year older and he will also be coming off a lengthy injury break. During his appearance on Movistar, Nadal admitted that he doesn't really expect to win the Australian Open and French Open next year.
For now, Nadal's biggest wish is just to be healthy enough to compete again. "Yes, I would like to play again and be competitive again, but the dream is not to come back and win Roland Garros or win Australia, so that people don't get confused, right? I am very aware that at the time I am in my life, all that is very far away.
And I don't say it's impossible because in the end I say things - I have said it a thousand times - all things in sport, they change very quickly," Nadal said."
