UEFA MOVES CHAMPIONS LEAGUE FINAL FRON ST. PETERSBURG TO FRANCE

 


UEFA Champions League final will not take place in St. Petersburg after Russia decided to invade Ukrain amidst world wide condemnation. 

The decision was made during an extraordinary meeting of the governing body's Executive Committee on Friday.

The final was scheduled to take pla

ce at Krestovsky Stadium but now the final will take place at Stade de France.

The final was sponsored by Russian backed Gazprom. Gazprom is a state owned energy company. 

"UEFA wishes to express its thanks and appreciation to French Republic President Emmanuel Macron for his personal support and commitment to have European club football's most prestigious game moved to France at the time of unprecedented crisis,"na statement from UEFA said on Friday.

On Thursday UEFA released a strong statement condemning the invasion of Ukrain by Russian troops.

"As the governing body of European football, UEFA is working tirelessly to develop and promote football according to common European values such as peace and respect for human rights, in the spirit of the Olympic Charter.

"We remain resolute in our resolute with the football community in Ukrain and stand ready to extend a hand to the Ukrain people."
