SAFARI RALLY LEGEND HANNU "THE FLYING FINN" MIKKOLA HAS PASSED AWAY




Hannu Mikkola was the first oversees rally driver to win the famous Safari Rally in 1972. 

He drove his Ford Escort along with his partner Gunnar Palm. 

Mikkola also won the Safari Rally in 1987 whereby it was his last career win. 


He was also the 7-time winner of the 1000 Lakes Rally in Finland. 

The legend won his first WRC victory in 1974. 

Mikkola switched from Ford to Audi and his competitiveness moved to high gear when he won the WRC in 1981 and 1982. He was driving a Quattro in both wins and eventually he went on to win the drivers' world title the following season with 4 victories in Group B Quattro A2.




Mikkola was also a 4-time winner of the RAC Rally of Great Britain. 

The rally great was inducted in the Rally Hall of Fame in 2011 along with Rohrl.



Mikkola passed away on February 26th, 2021 from Cancer at age 78 .
