LEBRON JAMES MAKES NBA ALL-STAR TEAM FOR RECORD 20

AP Photo

LeBron James joined yet another exclusive club, and he’ll have plenty of familiar faces alongside him at the NBA All-Star Game.

James is an All-Star — and an All-Star starter — for the 20th time, with the league unveiling the results of this season’s starter balloting on Thursday night. James is the first 20-time All-Star in NBA history. Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, whose career scoring record was broken by James last season, was a 19-time selection.

The game is Feb. 18 in Indianapolis.

Joining James in the Western Conference starting lineup: Phoenix’s Kevin Durant, Denver’s Nikola Jokic, Dallas’ Luka Doncic and Oklahoma City’s Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, the league's leader in 30-point games this season who edged perennial All-Star starter Stephen Curry of Golden State for the final West backcourt spot. Durant is a 14-time selection, one of only 11 players in NBA history to be picked that many times.

In the Eastern Conference, Milwaukee’s Giannis Antetokounmpo will be joined by Boston’s Jayson Tatum and Philadelphia’s Joel Embiid — the reigning NBA MVP, two-time defending scoring champion and current NBA scoring leader — in the frontcourt. Tatum set an All-Star Game record last season, scoring 55 points in Salt Lake City on the way to MVP honors.

The East guards are Indiana’s Tyrese Haliburton — who’ll be a starter on his home floor — and Milwaukee's Damian Lillard.

SENSATIONAL SINNER DETHRONES DJOKOVIČ TO REACH AUSTRALIAN OPEN FINAL

Reuters

Jannik Sinner downed defending champion Novak Djokovic 6-1 6-2 6-7(6) 6-3 at the Australian Open on Friday to hand the top seed a first defeat at his Melbourne Park fortress in six years and power into his maiden Grand Slam final.

Sinner's masterclass in the opening two sets set the wheels in motion for Djokovic's only defeat in the semi-finals of his favourite major. The youngster also became the first Italian player to reach an Australian Open singles final.

"It was a very, very tough match," said Sinner, who did not face a single break point in the match.

"I started out very well, for two sets I felt that he was not feeling too good on court so I just tried to keep pushing and then in the third set I had match point and I missed the forehand, but you know, this is tennis.

"I just tried to be ready for the next set, which I started off really well, and of course the atmosphere was so great. It's so great to play here."

Fourth seed Sinner stunned Djokovic twice in three matches at the end of last season and he made a rollicking start on Rod Laver Arena by targeting his 36-year-old opponent's shaky serve and error-prone backhand to comfortably win the opening set.

LIV GOLF LOOKING TO CRASH LAS VEGAS SUPER BOWL PARTY

USA TODAY Sports

LIV Golf has plans to crash the Super Bowl party in two weeks as the Saudi backed circuit makes its first American stop of the season looking for a badly needed boost to its U.S. profile.

Bank rolled by the Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund and an unfamiliar team format have left many American golf fans cold but Bryson DeChambeau believes Las Vegas and LIV Golf are the perfect match.

Branded as "Golf, but louder", there is the promise of plenty of hard core partying and night club vibe at the Las Vegas Country Club from Feb. 8-10.

Real Madrid may have come up short in LaLiga and the Champions League in 2022-23, but they can at least claim a Deloitte Football Money League title.

The company released its annual analysis Thursday, with Madrid sitting atop the list thanks to €831 million in revenue. That was a significant increase from the €713.8 million it generated for the 2021-22 season.

MALAYSIA SAVE THEIR BEST FOR LAST TO CLAIM MONUMENTAL DRAW AGAINST POWERHOUSE SOUTH KOREA

They were already eliminated from the 2023 AFC Asian Cup ahead of Thursday's final set of Group E fixtures, so there was little for Malaysia to play for put pride.

But they certainly made sure they would be leaving the tournament with their heads held high after a stirring display -- which culminated with an equaliser in the 15th minute of injury-time -- saw them hold powerhouses South Korea to a thrilling 3-3 draw.

Even with their fate already secured ahead of kickoff, Malaysia still had the power to influence the destiny of others.

They did just that as the draw meant that South Korea would finish second in Group E behind Bahrain, although the result might still sit well with the former given they have now avoided a heavyweight clash with Japan in the round of 16.

For Malaysia, they will at least know that -- with this result alone -- they have given an excellent account of themselves on their return to the continent's biggest stage for the first time since 2007.

SUPERB SABALENKA BEATS GAUFF TO REACH AUSTRALIAN OPEN FINAL

Aryna Sabalenka took a big step towards retaining her Australian Open crown by beating American fourth seed Coco Gauff 7-6(2) 6-4 in a thriller on Thursday to reach the final where she will meet Australian Open or qualifier Dayana Yastremska.

In a rematch of their U.S. Open final in September, the two reigning hardcourt Grand Slam champions made contrasting starts as Belarusian Sabalenka fired an ace and revved up her forehand to hold before pouncing on two double faults by Gauff to break.

But what followed was an intense contest between two players hoping to forge ahead and win their second Grand Slam title, and it was Sabalenka who held firm to become the first player since Serena Williams in 2016 and 2017 to make back-to-back Melbourne finals.

INDIA'S JAISWAL LEADS ROBUST REPLY AFTER ENGLAND POST 246

Reuters

Hosts India bowled out England for a modest 246 and then cruised to 119 for one in reply on day one of the opening test at Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium on Thursday.

Ben Stokes produced a captain's knock of 70 to help England post at least a competitive total before they wilted early into the final session.

Opener Yashasvi Jaiswal led India's strong reply with a rapid unbeaten 76, which included three sixes, while Shubman Gill was on 14 at the close.

India lost Rohit Sharma for 24 but would still fancy a handy lead, especially after England burnt all three reviews in their desperation for breakthroughs.

For the first time in a men's test, England went into the match with a lone fast bowler in Mark Wood, opting for a spin-heavy attack instead, which included debutant Tom Hartley.

India resisted any such temptation and retained seamers Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj, perhaps knowing a three-pronged spin attack could get the job done.

'FOOTBALL PERSONIFIED': LA CHARGERS HIRE HARBAUGH AS HEAD COACH

USA TODAY Sports

The Los Angeles Chargers have hired Jim Harbaugh as their next head coach, the team announced on Wednesday, marking his return to the NFL ranks after spending the last nine years with Michigan.

Harbaugh led the 15-0 Wolverines to a national title this past season, ending his alma mater's 26-year championship drought.

He will now take the helm of a Chargers club he used to play for that finished an abysmal 5-12 last season.

"Jim Harbaugh is football personified, and I can think of no one better to lead the Chargers forward," team owner Dean Spanos said in a statement.

"Jim has led hundreds of men to success everywhere he's been — as their coach. And today, Jim Harbaugh returns to the Chargers, this time as our coach. Who has it better than us?"

AFRICA CUP OF NATIONS | MATCH OF THE DAY

INDONESIA COMING OF AGE AT AFC ASIAN CUP WITH CRUCIAL WIN OVER VIETNAM

Asnawi Mangkualam scored the only goal of the game from the penalty spot on Friday to hand Indonesia 1-0 win over Vietnam that comes as a huge boost to their prospects of reaching the 2023 AFC Asian Cup knockout round. KARIM JAAFAR/AFP via Getty Images

They are the youngest team out of all 24 at the tournament -- but the bright talents of Indonesia could just be coming of age at the 2023 AFC Asian Cup.

And rather than just being in Qatar for a learning experience -- in what is their first Asian Cup appearance since 2007 -- they might just be staying on for a while longer.

With a gritty 1-0 win over Southeast Asian rivals Vietnam on Friday, Merah Putih picked up an all-important win that will stand them in good stead in their quest to make it out of the group stage.

While the top two teams in each of the six groups are guaranteed a spot in the round of 16, the four best-performing third-place teams will also progress -- with history suggesting that three points is usually enough for a decent chance.

By beating Vietnam, the Indonesians have that in the bag ahead of a daunting final Group D clash with Japan.

Their cause will not be helped by the fact that the Japanese will be going all out for the win as they too need a victory badly, after falling to a shock 2-1 defeat at the hands of Iraq earlier in the day.

Which is what makes the victory over Vietnam all the more crucial.

Indonesia had already given an excellent account of themselves on Monday despite losing 3-1 Iraq, with an equally plucky performance where they regularly looked dangerous on the counterattack.

Surprisingly, they were not as fluid against the Vietnamese although the familiarity between the two teams perhaps contributed to what turned out to be a battle of attrition.

Instead, what really stood out for Indonesia was determination and maturity that belied their tender years.

The game's pivotal moment came in the 42nd minute when Indonesia captain Asnawi Mangkualam calmly converted from the penalty spot, after Rafael Struick had pounced on some hesitant defending by Nguyễn Thanh Bình before being dragged down inside the area by the Vietnam centre-back.

But thereafter, they then had to keep their composure as the Vietnamese looked to hit back.

It always helps to have some seasoned campaigners to rely on and it was easy to see why Jordi Amat -- a veteran with experience in both the Premier League and LaLiga -- was so heavily coveted once it was known that he had Indonesian heritage before he was eventually naturalised two years ago.

Amat proved impassable in the heart of Indonesia's five-man defence but, when he had to be replaced after taking a painful blow to the face, others had to step up in the final 20 minutes.

Rizky Ridho took over both his place on the field and the captain's armband that Amat had originally inherited from Asnawi and barely missed a beat.

Fellow rising stars such as Pratama Arhan and Marselino Ferdinan also proved to be savvy in testing situations throughout the game and it was Vietnam who would buckle under the high-stakes nature of the contest -- with substitute Lê Phạm Thành Long sent off for a second bookable offence just as the clock ticked over into stoppage time.

Right at the death, Vietnam threatened one final time when a freekick on the left wing was sent flying towards goal Vũ Văn Thanh and looked destined to find the top corner only for Ernando Ari, all of 21 years, to produce a stunning save to preserve Indonesia's lead -- and the win.

For quite some time now, Vietnam -- along with Thailand -- have been Southeast Asia's leading duo.

Indonesia had not won their past six encounters with the Vietnamese with their last victory prior to Friday coming back in December 2016.

There was even a humbling 4-0 loss in June 2021 in the Asian qualifiers for the last FIFA World Cup that, at the time, really illustrated the gulf in quality between the two teams.

Yet, even then, Indonesia were already showing glimpses of their potential following the appointment of Shin Tae-Yong, who had coached South Korea at the 2018 World Cup.

He immediately shifted the focus to bringing through a talented group of youngsters and that has meant that, despite their relative youth, the current Indonesia team is far from inexperienced.

Now, on Asian football's biggest stage, they could not have chosen a better time to come of age.

GUINEA 0-2 SENEGAL - ABDOULAYE SECK AND ILIMAN NDIAYE GOALS SEND SENEGAL THROUGH WITH PERFECT RECORD, CAMEROON SNEAK IN

Abdoulaye Seck and Iliman Ndiaye scored as Senegal beat Guinea 2-0 in their final group match of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations. Cameroon's dramatic 3-2 win over The Gambia means they go through as the second-place team but Guinea will still go through as the one of the best third-place teams in the group stage. Senegal maintain a perfect record.

Senegal secured top spot in Group C at the Africa Cup of Nations following a 2-0 victory over Guinea.

The reigning champions progress to the knockout stages with a 100 per cent record after second-half goals from Abdoulaye Seck and Iliman Ndiaye sealed maximum points at Stade de Yamoussoukro.

Following a stop-start first half, Senegal took the lead just after the hour mark when Seck powerfully headed home from Krepin Diatta’s free-kick.

Sadio Mane, who missed an open goal earlier on, thought he had wrapped up the points when he slotted past Ibrahim Kone five minutes from time, but was denied by the offside flag.

However, Aliou Cisse’s side did get their second goal in the dying moments following a devastating counter, with Mane finding Ndiaye in acres of space and the substitute sweeping home.

With that, Senegal sealed first place in Group C ahead of Cameroon, who snatched second place from Guinea following their dramatic 3-2 victory over Gambia.
