BRUNO FERNANDES 'FIRST KICK' VAR AUDIO RELEASED AS MAN UNITED PUNISHMENT RECOMMEND

Bruno Fernandes was not cautioned despite appearing to kick Phil Foden while the Manchester City forward was on the floor, whereas Foden was sent off for his reaction towards the Portuguese midfielder.

Howard Webb has said Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes should have been shown a yellow card for appearing to swipe at Phil Foden, who was sat on the floor during the Manchester derby. Foden then reacted, kicking back and catching Fernandes with both feet in the lower abdomen, sending the Portuguese midfielder to the ground.

Referee Michael Oliver had no hesitation in producing a red card for Foden, who was left stunned, while Fernandes went unpunished despite kicking the City player first. Video Assistant Referee (VAR) could not recommend a yellow card because Oliver had already seen and acted on the incident.

Speaking on Match Officials Mic'd Up, chief refereeing officer Webb said: "So, taking those in order, Michael, I agree with the red card for Phil Foden for violent conduct. He kicks out with force into the upper body of Bruno Fernandes. We saw a player sent off for Aston Villa earlier in the season. Joao Gomes was sent off for a very similar thing, kicking with the studs into the body.

"And that's seen by the referee on the field, and that's the on-field call, a red card for Foden. Now, when you look at the footage, there is that petulant kick by Bruno Fernandes into the backside of Foden. It is more petulant than violent. To be violent conduct, it has to have excessive force or brutality, and when you look at that, particularly in full speed, it doesn't have those elements.

"So therefore, this would be a yellow card offence. And the VAR can't step in to recommend the referee looks at the screen to give a yellow card. Of course, if all of this is missed and nothing is given against Foden, then the VAR could step in so the referee could see Foden's actions for a possible red card, and they would capture Fernandes' yellow card action. But because the referee gave the red card on the field, that option is not open to the VAR."

Pro Ref, formerly PGMOL, have also released the VAR audio, with both the VAR and assistant VAR concluding that Fernandes kicked the ball rather than Foden himself.

Assistant VAR: "It was for a kick-out. It looks like he's given a foul and then the legs came up."

VAR: "Michael [referee], the penalty is checked and cleared. Just confirm your on-field decision in terms of discipline here, please."

Referee: "Red card, Phil Foden. Kick out into the body of Bruno [Fernandes]. The foul is by Bruno on Phil. I think he's in a tangle and when they are separating, I think Phil kicks him. But they will check."

VAR: "That looks like a clear red card to me. Secondary movement, watch broadcast. Okay, happy to confirm? Red card. Happy to confirm? Confirming the red card for Manchester City 47. A kick to the midriff with two feet."

"Just roll through to check that Bruno does nothing. I'm absolutely certain he doesn't. No, he kicks the ball; it's fine."

Assistant VAR: "No, the other one [Bruno's first kick]. That's not what they're talking about. That is the one they're talking about."

VAR: "Minimal, minimal. That's not for us; that's fine."

Assistant VAR: "Yeah, I agree."

At the time, a Premier League explanation read: "#MUNMCI – 23’ The referee's call of red card to Foden for violent conduct was checked and confirmed by VAR."

Meanwhile, Roy Keane went as far as suggesting that Fernandes 'was the one who was violent' during the challenge. He told Sky Sports: "Bruno tackles him, fouls him, gives him a little boot on the floor, reacts and he's now sent off. Bruno catches him, Foden sent off, I guess it's classed as violent and to me, Bruno is the one who violent.

"I have to call it out, called it with Kyle Walker a few years ago when he went down after a head butt, we see violent differently. I don't think that's a red card for Foden, I don't. 'Did the referee get given a chance?'

"Foden is daft here but so is Bruno. If Bruno got sent off, we'd be saying, 'it was a daft, a bit silly.' Everyone's in a union, you've got to look out for each other. We saw Walker a few years ago do it with a head butt, Bruno has got to do better there. It's a big game, you've got to look after the opposition players as well. Foden, I don't think it's a red card."

Foden, who was sent off in the 23rd minute of the Manchester derby, now faces a three‑game ban, meaning the England international will miss Thursday night's Carabao Cup tie against Norwich City.

Premier League rules state that red cards issued in league matches carry over into other domestic competitions, including the Carabao Cup and FA Cup. Yellow cards, however, remain competition‑specific.

As a result, City’s clash with Norwich will be the first match Foden sits out under the suspension. He will also be unavailable for City's Premier League return against Sunderland at the Etihad Stadium this weekend, as well as the trip to Liverpool on October 11 following the international break.

Bruno Fernandes would be allowed to leave Manchester United if a club meets a release clause of £56.68million, according to reports. Fernandes, 31, was subject to interest from Saudi Arabian side Al-Hilal in the summer.

The Portuguese midfielder went on to reject their approach, despite the lucrative salary which would have been waiting for him in the Middle East. He reaffirmed his commitment to United in a recent interview with reporters.

The Unitedskipper made it clear he will not think about his future at Old Trafford until the 2026 World Cup has been and gone. However, it's been reported a clause in his contract provides a route out of the club if another club meets it.

According to BBC Sport, Fernandes' current deal, which expires in the summer of 2027 but includes the option of an additional year, includes a clause which would allow him to depart England. Any club outside of the country would be allowed to snap him up if they tabled an offer of £56.68m.

At present, there is no suggestion he is looking for an exit, as he made clear to reporters. When asked if he is thinking about his future, he said: "As I've always said, I feel good here. I want to achieve my dreams still, but obviously I can't talk by the side of the club.

"I've seen a lot of news. I've seen a lot of people talking that I had an agreement to go already next season. If the club has done that agreement, it wasn't made with me.

"So I haven't spoken with anyone. I could tell you that there are still people talking to me and saying that they will be very eager to have me next year, of course.

"But from my side, that's not talked about. Because my agent also knows how I work, so if he wants to talk to me, it will be after the World Cup. Because until then, I won't speak to anyone."

Fernandes did go on to admit other clubs in Europe also expressed an interest in his services as well as Saudi Arabia. When it came down to formal offers, none were tabled to United, who are keen on retaining the midfielder's services, while also willing to provide an avenue for him to depart, should he choose to.

The ex-Sporting Lisbon midfielder offered an insight into a discussion he had with United CEO Omar Berrada and director of football Jason Wilcox. He added: "I spoke with both, obviously. I think the first time I spoke was already in Malaysia, because that was when everything started.

"I had a conversation with Omar and I told him, 'Look, this is what is on the table. I know the club might be looking at this in a way. I will be looking at it in a different way.

"'So I just want to know from your perspective, from your side, what's the point of view, what you guys want to do. And then from there on, I will do my things.'

"And obviously, the first one, Jason said, like Omar said, 'We won't say no. But obviously, it's the thing that we want you to stay at the club. But if you want to go, we won't say that it's not the offer for us, because obviously it's massive money.' As I said this many times, the club's last biggest sale was £20million, probably from Daniel James.

"I'm not very sure. Scott [McTominay] went above that. But to go from that to the big amount that Al-Hilal was, like they could offer £80m, £100m. They were like more than eager to pay for the player to go."

Having arrived on the red side of Manchester from Sporting for £47m in the summer of 2020, Fernandes has contributed 100 goals and 87 assists in 299 appearances for the club.

The Portuguese got another 90 minutes under his belt in midweek, despite once again hindering the Red Devils' in attack.

Goal

Bruno Fernandes has always been a frustrating player to watch. The former Sporting CP playmaker goes to ground too easily, riles up opponents constantly and never fails to lambast his own team-mates when things are going wrong. For the most part, all of that has been excused in Fernandes' time at Manchester United, because he has consistently made a decisive impact in the final third of the pitch.

But this season that is no longer the case. Fernandes' latest wince-inducing performance came in United's Europa League opener against Twente, which saw the Dutch side battle to a 1-1 draw in front of an exasperated Old Trafford crowd.

The hosts held a lead at the interval thanks to a fine Christian Eriksen strike, but surrendered it with 20 minutes left on the clock as the Dane was made to pay for a defensive mistake by Sam Lammers. "We were too easy-going, too complacent," Erik ten Hag told TNT Sports after the game. "We didn’t bring it over the line and as a team, you have to deliver this."

The United manager might as well have been talking directly to Fernandes, who was the most "complacent" player on the pitch. He has been for weeks now, but for some reason, remains undroppable. If the Red Devils are to turn their campaign around, and Ten Hag wants to save his job, that has to change. The captain has become a big problem that can no longer be ignored.

Poor execution

According to Sofascore, Fernandes touched the ball 72 times against Twente, which reflects the fact that everything goes through him when United press forward. The 30-year-old never stops running or demanding the ball, and when he gets it, always looks for the most direct route to goal.

Unfortunately, his execution is falling well below the required standard. Fernandes lost possession 19 times on Wednesday night as the majority of his passes went astray and his first touch let him down.

Fernandes only created one chance in the game, too, and yet, he was allowed to stay on until the final whistle. It doesn't reflect well on Ten Hag, who made four substitutions after Twente's equaliser, but didn't consider taking off the man directly responsible for United's failure to keep control of the game.

Blind hope is the only explanation for that. Fernandes has shown in the past that he can deliver moments of magic out of the blue; that's what Ten Hag continues to cling to. But the Portuguese's risky style of play isn't reaping rewards anymore; it's just costing United dearly.

Not making the right decisions

Fernandes has been ever-present for United in the Premier League so far this term, and has only been substituted once: in the 79th minute of their 2-1 away defeat to Brighton. In each of those games, Fernandes lost the ball over 10 times. In the 0-0 draw at Crystal Palace last time out, he ceded possession on 34 occasions, almost twice as many as any other United player.

United can't rely on Fernandes to make the right decisions. He will often just go for goal himself before picking his head up to see if a team-mate is in a better position, and his shooting has been erratic - to put it as kindly as possible.

The Portugal international has had the most shots without scoring of any player in Europe's top five leagues (17), and he's fourth in the Premier League rankings for most 'big chances' wasted (three). These numbers should be a major concern for Ten Hag.

Fernandes has yet to score in 2024-25, with his last Premier League goal coming back in April. He has bagged three assists this term, but two of those came in the 7-0 Carabao Cup rout of Barnsley, which was more like a training game for United. This feels like more than just a slump in form, then; Fernandes is showing signs of decline. That could be down to burnout, or just age, but either way, the midfielder should no longer be guaranteed a place in the starting XI.

Cause of an imbalance

Fernandes has been the best United player of the post-Sir Alex Ferguson era. That's why the club handed him a contract extension through to 2027 in August, after months of transfer speculation.

"I believe there is a dream future at this club with the changes that are taking place," Fernandes told ESPN Brazil after penning fresh terms at Old Trafford. "I had concrete offers. There were other directions that would have been interesting for me, but I feel good here, I feel loved and I feel that the club has been very respectful of me."

 At the time, the renewal was seen as another crucial statement of intent from United's new minority owners INEOS - helmed by Britain's richest man, Sir Jim Ratcliffe. Fernandes won his third Sir Matt Busby Player of the Year award in May, which was a deserved reward for his 28-goal contributions in an otherwise miserable campaign for the Red Devils.

Over the last four-and-a-half years, Fernandes has carried the team on his back, but United haven't really progressed as a collective. He's been given license to lead however he sees fit, which has caused an imbalance, particularly under Ten Hag.

"Ten Hag is giving him the freedom to go there, there, there," Gary Neville explained on Sky Sports at the start of the year, "and that means you can never have a combination or a pattern because you've got your main midfield player everywhere on the pitch. It's almost a bit like 20 years ago where your No.10, you gave them licence to play. That's gone now. You have to fit within a combination and a pattern and system of attacking shape."

Need to experiment

United do have plenty of other options for the No.10 slot. Former Bologna and Bayern Munich star Joshua Zirkzee, who was signed to compete with Rasmus Hojlund for minutes upfront, has a natural tendency to drop deeper and link play, while wingers Amad Diallo and Alejandro Garnacho are both versatile enough to move into a central role.

Mason Mount is fit again now, and the No.10 was his best position at Chelsea. Eriksen, meanwhile, enjoyed a resurgence in holding midfield recently, but he can also play further up the pitch, and is certainly better at keeping the ball circulating than Fernandes.

The visit of Twente represented the perfect time to give Fernandes a rest and experiment with a different combination, but Ten Hag let the opportunity pass him by. United can't be so dependent on one player if they are serious about getting back into the Champions League.

The Red Devils would likely be more efficient without Fernandes, and being dropped might be the wake-up call he needs. Fernandes has to evolve to help the club now, and that means sharing responsibility instead of trying to do everything on his own. Fernandes still has plenty to offer if he accepts that, but it won't happen unless Ten Hag reins him in.

Really cut out for captaincy?

If United carry on as they are, their season will reach a crisis point, just as it did this time last year. Three wins from seven games in all competitions is simply not good enough. Discounting the Carabao Cup romp against Barnsley, Ten Hag's side have only scored six goals, and the results will only improve when they discover a clinical edge.

As per The Athletic, the Red Devils have racked up an impressive xG (expected goals) total in the Premier League, which can only be bettered by Liverpool, but they're sitting top for 'big chances' missed (17). Fernandes is certainly not the only one to blame for that, but he has been a chief offender when it comes to squandering clear openings.

Fernandes is not the composed finisher he once was. The captain's armband can be a heavy weight, and in the Portuguese's case especially, it looks like he's trying too hard.

"When you've got a technician as a skipper, I think it's always dangerous because they're going to have off games," former Newcastle manager Alan Pardew said on talkSPORT after watching Fernandes struggle in United's 3-0 hammering at the hands of Liverpool on September 1. "Even [Christian] Eriksen in his prime, [Michel] Platini in his prime, they'd have the off day. I think it would be better for him as a footballer to take it off him. I think it might let him be a bit more free-minded. He's probably worrying about the back four, worrying about the wingers. You don't really know how to deal with it. I think it's a hamper to him."

It's true that Fernandes doesn't seem like the best fit for the captaincy. Lisandro Martinez would be better suited; he's a born leader with good communication skills and reads the game brilliantly.

Being relived of the leadership burden might stop Fernandes from forcing everything on the ball. He needs to get back to basics, or else supporters will soon run out of patience with him, and in turn, Ratcliffe will do the same with Ten Hag.

What's next?

Ten Hag finally took some responsibility for United's inconsistency after their false start in Europe, adding to TNT Sports: "It is not only the team, I have to look in the mirror as well. I am part of it." He could start by taking the blinkers off when it comes to Fernandes.

The Portuguese ace can no longer survive on his past reputation. It's Tottenham up next, and United cannot afford for Fernandes to have another stinker. A defeat against Ange Postecoglou's team will leave the Red Devils well off the top-four pace, which would be inexcusable at this early stage of the campaign.

Ten Hag needs his midfielders to be methodical and his forwards to be ruthless. Spurs have the firepower to pick United off if they're not. Fernandes will probably get the nod again, though, and so the fans are in for another nail-biting afternoon.

When everything comes off for Fernandes, there is no issue, but that hasn't been the case for some time. Ten Hag is edging closer to the point of no return, and his blind faith in United's enigmatic skipper may end up being the straw that breaks the camel's back for the INEOS regime.

 Bruno Fernandes said he didn't deserve to be sent off for a dangerous challenge on James Maddison in Manchester United's 3-0 Premier League loss to Tottenham on Sunday.

The United captain was shown a straight red in the 42nd minute at Old Trafford.

"Nobody wants to be sent off, it's not a good feeling," said Fernandes, who took the unusual decision of stepping up for postmatch interviews following his dismissal. "I didn't go with the studs. It's never a red card. Even James Maddison when he gets up, he said it's not a red card."

Fernandes appeared to slip when attempting a tackle in Tottenham's half -- but then raised his foot and caught Maddison on the shin in a studs-up challenge.

Referee Christopher Kavanagh immediately brandished a red card.

"If this is a red card, we have to look at many other incidents," Fernandes said. "It is a foul. There is not much contact. If [the referee] wants to give me a yellow, I agree. I don't understand why VAR doesn't call him to the screen."

Fernandes became the fourth United captain to be sent off in a Premier League game at Old Trafford, joining Roy Keane, Nemanja Vidic and Wayne Rooney on that list.

"I want to say, I left my teammates one man down," Fernandes said. "I do appreciate everything they did on the pitch, obviously was tougher for them. We didn't start the game well when it was 11 vs. 11, then obviously the result is on their side and we get the situation with the red card and obviously I think they did ... very well.

"They tried, obviously we conceded another two goals, but it was difficult to cover all the spaces. But I think [there are] many good things that we can take away from this, [the] resilience of the team was always there, and I'm really proud of the team."

United trailed 1-0 at halftime after Brennan Johnson's goal in the third minute.

It got worse for United after the break, when Dejan Kulusevski and Dominic Solanke also scored for Spurs.

As per a report by TEAMtalk earlier this month, United had also given the Portuguese midfielder the 'green light' to begin chats with Saudi clubs.

Pride in peer recognition

Reacting to the achievement, Fernandes expressed his delight at being recognised by his fellow professionals across the division. Fernandes said: "It is obviously a very proud moment. They are the ones you go on the pitch against and it's probably not easy to vote for someone you play against, so it is a very good moment."

In the women's game, Shaw scooped the PFA Women's Player of the Year award for the second time, claiming the trophy after scoring 21 goals to win a third straight Golden Boot and her first Women's Super League title with Manchester City.

Youth stars and merit awards

O'Reilly was named the Men's PFA Young Player of the Year after an outstanding campaign that saw him help England win World Cup bronze. O'Reilly said: "I had a great season. I'm very proud of the season I had. I won two trophies with my club and managed to play at the World Cup with my country. I'm over the moon how it turned out."

Meanwhile, Arsenal prospect Olivia Smith picked up the women's PFA Young Player of the Year title for the second consecutive campaign. Elsewhere, Sir Kenny Dalglish and Karen Carney received the PFA merit awards for their outstanding lifetime contributions to football.

BRUNO FERNANDES APOLOGISED TO ERIK TEN HAG AFTER MAN UNITED SACK

Bruno Fernandes has revealed he called Erik ten Hag to apologise after the Dutchman was sacked by Manchester United.

Fernandes scored a penalty as United drew 1-1 with Chelsea in their first Premier League game since Ten Hag's dismissal on Monday.

The midfielder said he has spoken to his former boss following the decision and admitted the players must take their share of responsibility for Ten Hag's departure.

"Whenever you see a manager go you have to take some of the blame on yourself, it is because the team is not doing so well," Fernandes told Sky.

"It is easier to get rid of a manager than 15 players. I spoke to the manager [Ten Hag] and apologised to him, I was disappointed he has gone and I tried to help him. I wasn't scoring goals, we are not scoring goals and I feel responsible.

"It is not good for anyone at the club when the manager goes. The team is not the best, the results are not the best and he is the one who pays for it."

Following Ten Hag's departure, United have beaten Leicester in the Carabao Cup and drawn with Chelsea in the Premier League under caretaker boss Ruud van Nistelrooy.

He has another two games in charge before Rúben Amorim takes the reins on Nov. 11.

Van Nistelrooy admitted it's been a "difficult" week at the club and said the players have had to "look in the mirror" after a poor start to the season.

"It has been very difficult from last Monday to today, six days, a rollercoaster of emotions," Van Nistelrooy said. "It's very sad seeing Erik leave.

"The next day you have to start to focus on getting the lads ready for Leicester because 75,000 people show up here at Old Trafford and the players feel they have an obligation to do better.

"They look in the mirror and their reactions then and today show they think about things."

Van Nistelrooy's long-term future remains up in the air after Amorim stated his intention to bring his own coaching staff to Old Trafford.

The 48-year-old will lead the team against POAK in the Europa League on Thursday and against Leicester in the Premier League on Sunday but is still waiting to learn whether he will stay beyond the November international break.

"I am open for the future," he said. "We all will be backing him [Amorim] and helping him to get Man United where we want them to be.

"I look forward to get to know him better. He has done very well in Portugal. He's a young, talented coach and he's done very well in Portugal."

MANCHESTER UNITED MUST TRANSFER EVERYONE EXCEPT FERNANDES - ROONEY

 Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney has said a "massive clearout" is needed at Old Trafford in the summer and added that he believes the team should be built around captain Bruno Fernandes.

United are eighth in the Premier League going into the final day of the season on Sunday and are at risk of missing out on European football altogether for next year.

Fernandes has been a standout performer this season and is United's top scorer in the league with 10 goals and has registered more assists (7) than any other player at the club.

"You have to build around Bruno. He's the one player with quality. He has got fight in him. I think you keep the young players and Bruno. I think it has to be a massive clearout, it has to be. It's not going to be in one year but it's got to be over the next couple of years," Rooney said on Sky Sports on Wednesday.

"To compete in this league, they need better players and don't get me wrong, these players are good players and Premier League players. But to compete with Manchester City, with Liverpool, with Arsenal they need better players."

On Marcus Rashford, Rooney said: "We all know Marcus has got the capabilities to play at the top level. I just wonder if, for Marcus himself, is it time to go play elsewhere? I don't know.

"I think he has to ask himself that question. I want him to stay, to break records at this club. But he needs to get his head right, get his head down and get back to the player we know he can be."

United beat Newcastle United 3-2 in their final home game of the season on Wednesday, following which Erik ten Hag addressed the fans at Old Trafford from the pitch and issued a rallying cry for their FA Cup final clash against Man City, which can be streamed on ESPN+. "It wasn't an easy season, but one thing remained constant, and it was the backing of you for the team," Ten Hag said.

"The season is not over yet. Now, first we will travel to Brighton for three points and then we go to Wembley.

"And I promise you that those players will give everything, to get that cup, to win the cup, and bring it to Old Trafford.

"And be assured, you will be there supporting us. Thank you, you are the best supporters in the world, thank you."

PITCH INVADERS TAKE SELFIES WITH FERNANDES DURING MAN UTD FRIENDLY

Dublin (AFP) – Normal time in Manchester United's pre-season friendly against Leeds at Dublin's Croke Park on Wednesday ended in bizarre fashion when two young fans ran on to the pitch to take selfies with Bruno Fernandes.

When security did not immediately intervene, at least three other pitch invaders joined in and play did not restart before referee Neil Doyle blew for full-time.

The match, the first game of association soccer at the home of the Gaelic Athletic Association since 2009, was played in front of a sell-out crowd of more than 80,000.

It ended 1-1 at the end of 90 minutes after Joshua Zirkzee gave United a 16th-minute lead before Leeds equalised just before the half-hour mark, with Brenden Aaronson scoring after good work from former United winger Daniel James.

Noussair Mazraoui scored the decisive spot-kick as Manchester United won 5-4 in a penalty shoot-out.

"First half we were really dangerous and could've had a number of goals," United manager Michael Carrick told ITV. "We played some really good football.

"They came back into the game, and in the second half there were a few changes and it was important to get some minutes in some of our lads.

"The young lads did well, it was everything we expected of them. Winning the game is always nice."

Fernandes missed from the spot before it went to sudden death, but after James Justin's effort struck the crossbar, Mazraoui saw United to victory.

Lisandro Martinez, Kobbie Mainoo and Marcus Rashford were among those watching on, not involved after only joining the training camp at the start of the week following the World Cup.

Before the match, Carrick said he was holding the trio "in reserve" for Saturday's friendly against former boss Ruben Amorim and AC Milan in Wroclaw, Poland -- potentially Rashford's first appearance in a United shirt since December 2024.

"He's our player," said former United and England midfielder Carrick of Rashford, now back at Old Trafford after a loan spell at Barcelona.

"He's come back great, like any other player. I've known him a long time, he gives us something a bit different.

"He's been in great spirits since he's come back."

After several half-time changes, including a debut for United's new 18-year-old winger Tynan Thompson, Leeds should have gone ahead six minutes in when Joe Rodon's low cross found Harry Wilson, but the summer signing shot straight at Senne Lammens.

Fernandes was among six United players to come onto the field on the hour and, having seen one effort ruled out for offside, he hit the crossbar with a curling shot five minutes from time.

Bruno Fernandes failed from the penalty spot again as Manchester United were beaten 3-1 at Brentford.

Igor Thiago’s first-half double put Brentford in command before United were handed a lifeline by Benjamin Sesko’s first goal since his £73million move from RB Leipzig.

Substitute Mathias Jensen sealed matters in the fifth of eight minutes of stoppage time after Fernandes had wasted a golden chance to equalise with the contest having moved into the final quarter.

Bryan Mbeumo, back at Brentford after ending a six-year stay with the Bees in the summer, was dragged down by Nathan Collins in front of goal.

But Fernandes, who missed the target from 12 yards at Fulham last month, was wasteful as Caoimhin Kelleher went to his left and saved with a strong hand.

Brentford had won only once in the Premier League and started the day just outside the bottom three, but an excellent team performances was typified by the excellent Jordan Henderson and Mikkel Damsgaard in midfield and Thiago’s clinical finishing.

Diogo Dalot, Manuel Ugarte and Matheus Cunha returned after United’s win over Chelsea with boss Ruben Amorim’s hand forced by injury and suspension.

Noussair Mazraoui was injured, Casemiro ruled out by his Chelsea red card, and Amad Diallo unavailable due to a family bereavement.

It meant summer signings Cunha, Mbeumo – who received a warm reception on his Brentford return – and Sesko lined up in the United attack for the first time .

Brentford profited from the first main action after eight minutes as Cunha went to ground and Henderson spotted Thiago’s run.

Thiago advanced to crash a shot high off the post past Altay Bayindir, and the subsequent VAR check showed the Brazilian had been played onside by Harry Maguire’s back foot.

Cunha drove wide from 20 yards as United sought to recover from the early setback.

But Bayindir had to make two fine stops in the space of a minute, palming out Sepp van den Berg’s point-blank effort and acrobatically tipping over a Collins header after Henderson had found space.

Brentford were swarming all over United and doubled their lead after 20 minutes.

Maguire played Kevin Schade onside this time and Bayindir could only divert his cross into the path of Thiago, who squeezed the ball over the line despite the desperate effort of the United goalkeeper to salvage the situation.

Sesko fired straight at Kelleher, but the Slovenian striker did not have to wait long to open his United account.

Mbeumo competed with Kelleher under Patrick Dorgu’s cross and the ball fell kindly for Sesko.

Kelleher kept out two attempts – a header and a stabbed shot – but Sesko slammed home at the third attempt and the goal stood after VAR had checked Mbeumo’s challenge on the goalkeeper.

Cunha’s low drive was collected comfortably, but the second half was a more sedate affair until Schade got the better of Dalot and Dango Ouattara was denied by Bayindir.

United’s frustration grew after Collins was spared a red card, despite not appearing to try and play the ball when holding back Mbeumo, and Fernandes missed from the spot.

Jensen’s thunderous drive finally saw off United as jubilant Brentford fans directed cries of “you’re getting sacked in the morning” at Amorim.

VAR AUDIO RELEASED FOR BRUNO FERNANDES RED CARD VS. TOTTENHAM

 PGMOL chief Howard Webb has admitted that VAR made an error by failing to immediately overturn the red card issued to Bruno Fernandes during Manchester United’s recent 3-0 loss to Tottenham in the Premier League. The United captain was shown a straight red by referee Chris Kavanagh at Old Trafford for a challenge on James Maddison on September 29. United were trailing by just one goal at the time and pushing for an equaliser.

In a bid to win back possession near the centre circle, the 30-year-old lunged at Maddison but slipped, catching the Tottenham player's shin and sending him to the ground in a theatrical fashion. With assistance from VAR, the referee wasted no time in showing Fernandes a red card. It turned out to be a decisive moment, as the Red Devils' efforts to stage a comeback were upended.

VAR audio from the incident has now been released. Although review panels have since criticised the decision - with the midfielder's suspension being overturned following the club's appeal to the FA despite the Premier League initially releasing a statement to back the referee's decision - conversations between the match officials reveal how they reached their incorrect conclusion.

The assistant referee acted at once to call the challenge a '100% red card'

On the latest episode of Match Officials Mic'd Up, a series of controversial incidents were brought back to the fore, with audio for each case being revealed for the first time. During Man United's match against Tottenham, footage released shows Kavanagh's assistant referee telling him: "That's awful for me, that's 100% a red card."

After VAR reviewed the decision to brandish a red card, they proved surplus to requirements in stepping in and overturning the on-field judgement. Peter Bankes can be heard saying:

"It's not studs. It's shin height. It's a deliberate act and made no attempt to play the ball. The angle doesn't show it's with studs. There is a slip but I think ref's call."

Howard Webb Gives Verdict

PGMOL chief says the decision not to overturn was a mistake.

A former referee of 12 years and over 300 Premier League games, Webb was adamant that VAR should have gone against Kavanagh's initial call, stating: "It was [a mistake]. We hear on the audio that the assistant said it was a red card offence and the referee takes that advice.

"The contact is high, but Fernandes slips first. It's not an attempt on the ball, but from the assistants' view, it looks like studs go in - but it's a slight error. There's no driving the foot into the opponent, it's more of a tripping action. VAR should have sent the referee to the screen."

The controversy surrounding the incident eventually allowed Fernandes to win his appeal, avoiding suspension and enabling him to play in United's next two matches - against Porto in the Europa League and Aston Villa in the Premier League. However, the Portuguese international wasn't able to manage to stay out of trouble for long. In the midweek fixture, he was once again shown a red card, resulting in an upcoming suspension for European competition.

Patrick Dorgu faces a one-match Premier League suspension if he picks up another yellow card. It comes as the defender seemingly 'liked' a social media post mocking Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim. The Denmark international's Instagram account engaged with content criticising Amorim's decision to deploy Bruno Fernandes and Casemiro as a midfield partnership.

The post, published by 'mufcunion', featured a comment from X stating: "Any coach that sees Casemiro and Bruno Fernandes as a viable pivot is one that isn't serious."

The Instagram post's caption declared: "Bruno Fernandes and Casemiro CANNOT play together," which received a 'like' from the 21-year-old full-back's profile. Dorgu must now navigate his own challenges as he treads carefully ahead of Sunday's clash with Crystal Palace.

Should the left-back be shown a yellow card against the Eagles, he would be ruled out of United's home encounter with West Ham on Thursday. Amorim is yet to address Dorgu's social media activity, though many would suggest he has more pressing concerns given United's current form.

The Red Devils currently sit in 10th position after sliding down the table following a series of disappointing results. United had enjoyed significant momentum earlier in the campaign, defeating teams such as Liverpool, Brighton, and Sunderland during an impressive winning streak.

However, stalemates against Tottenham and Nottingham Forest halted this progress before it completely collapsed following their 1-0 defeat to Everton.

Despite Idrissa Gueye receiving his marching orders in the 13th minute following a confrontation with team-mate Michael Keane, United failed to make the most of their numerical superiority and succumbed to a 29th-minute effort from Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall.

A fresh test now lies ahead against fifth-placed Palace, with United needing to deliver their finest performance against last season's FA Cup champions. With the Red Devils entirely committed to domestic matters, having failed to secure European qualification this campaign, Amorim requires his full squad at his disposal as he seeks to guide the club back up the league standings.

Ahead of the Palace encounter, Amorim said: "They are a different club [to us] and they are doing things better than us so that is quite simple."

"We play in a different way and they are just doing things better than us. They are doing things really well and they play more in transition than us. We have to look at all of these things when we compare our teams but of course, in every position, we can do so much better."

When asked whether his side possessed an edge due to their absence from European competition, the Portuguese manager added: "I said the same thing last year when we were in Europe and I say the same thing this year: there [is an] advantage and disadvantage of not being in Europe. Ruben Amorim bemoaned how hard his Manchester United job was after his injury-hit team lost 1-0 at Tottenham on a day where Amad Diallo was ruled out for the rest of the season.

Diallo sustained an innocuous ankle ligament injury in training this week but was not the only absentee in north London with Kobbie Mainoo, Manuel Ugarte and Toby Collyer unavailable with knocks, while Leny Yoro and Christian Eriksen were ill.

The aforementioned six joined the likes of Lisandro Martinez, Luke Shaw and Mason Mount on the treatment table, which left Amorim with limited options at Spurs as he largely named a bench full of teenagers and watched his team lose for a 12th time in the Premier League this term to drop to 15th.

“I have a lot of problems. My job is so hard but I’m here to continue my job to the next week with my beliefs. I will try to do it, I will try to win again,” Amorim told Sky Sports, with a trip to in-form Everton up next.

“In this moment it is more than the idea or system. In this moment it is like survive and to think the small things, improve the small things for the next game, to not even look at the table or the schedule or nothing.

“Of course I have to because we have a lot of games and we have three competitions with a small squad at the moment.

“That part is my part but the players, everyone in Carrington, just focus on the next game, the next training and that is our goal.

“Just focus on the next game and let’s do everything to win some games to finish the season and then think in the big picture.

“In this moment it is to try to keep the players healthy, recover some players and to focus on what we have to in the next game. That is our goal.”

However, former United defender Gary Neville was critical of Amorim’s tactics and in particular his deployment of midfielders Casemiro and Bruno Fernandes, during Sky’s commentary on the game.

Neville said: “United may win today and may score goals, but I have to say that the structure of the team is awful.

“The gaps in that midfield between Fernandes and Casemiro. That’s a tactic, they’ve been asked to do that, Bruno’s been asked to come out to this side and it isn’t right.

“Bruno Fernandes is playing right-wing, the two of them in midfield are split, it’s embarrassing. You wouldn’t see this in under-9s or under-10s football.”

Amorim expressed hope that Yoro and Eriksen would return for Saturday’s clash at Goodison Park but does not expect Mainoo to be available.

He added: “It’s hard to know. Let’s wait a few more days. I think Leny and Chris were sick so they will recover.

“Of course Chris has the heart situation and we have to be really careful with that. It’s nothing about the heart. I am just saying the heart rate has to be controlled because he has a fever. I think he will recover.

“The rest we will see. Kobbie is out. Amad is out for sure until the end of the season.”

Quizzed on what the injuries are down to, Amorim insisted: “I think it is everything together.

“Amad was alone. He was doing a tackle. The feet were sticking in the grass and some players felt during training sickness so it is everything.

“Sometimes in moments, everything goes wrong but we have to face the challenge and to focus on the next game. That’s all.”

MAN UNITED'S BRUNO FERNANDES SENT OFF ON 2ND STRAIGHT GAME

 Bruno Fernandes was sent off for the second time in as many games as Manchester United drew 3-3 with Porto in the Europa League on Thursday.

The Portugal international was dismissed for two bookable offenses at Estadio do Dragao -- just days after he was shown a straight red for a dangerous tackle in United's 3-0 loss against Tottenham on Sunday.

A three-match suspension for that sending off was later overturned on appeal, but he was given his marching orders again as United battled to avoid another defeat against Porto.

Fernandes was sent off in the 81st minute when shown a second yellow card for a high boot that caught defender Nehuén Pérez.

United were trailing 3-2 when he went off, having led 2-0 inside 20 minutes.

A loss would have increased the pressure on manager Erik ten Hag after a troubled start to the season, but substitute Harry Maguire salvaged a draw with a headed goal in the first minute of stoppage time.

"We started the game very good and we dominated and scored two good goals, but then we lost control," Ten Hag said. "The start was good, the middle part was not good and we finished very good.

"You see again the team is willing, strong character, but the middle part, the defending, we have to improve."

Marcus Rashford and Rasmus Højlund had put United into an early 2-0 lead before goals from Pepê and Samu Omorodion level the score at half-time.

Omorodion then put Porto ahead five minutes into the second half.

Casemiro and Bruno Fernandes scored two goals apiece as Manchester United eased into the Carabao Cup quarterfinals with a breathless 5-2 victory over Leicester City on Wednesday, their first game since the sacking of manager Erik ten Hag.

Conor Coady pulled one back for Leicester in first-half stoppage time, but the visitors' hopes were short-lived as Fernandes latched on to a back pass, dribbled around the keeper and scored his second in the 59th minute.

AC Milan closed out its preseason with a 4-2 victory over Manchester United at the Tarczyński Arena in Wroclaw in an international friendly that ultimately left the Italian side with plenty of positive takeaways. The Rossoneri had to respond twice, but ultimately imposed their attacking quality during a second half in which they found space and capitalized on their opponent’s mistakes.

The English side took an early lead through Harry Maguire, who rose to head home Bruno Fernandes’ corner. However, Milan found a response before halftime through Samuel Chukwueze, who received the assist from Gonçalo Ramos.

The equalizer was not the only major moment of the first half. Bruno Fernandes had the chance to restore United’s lead from the penalty spot, but Lorenzo Torriani read the shot correctly and made a decisive save to keep the score at 1-1.

Gonçalo Ramos Turns His Debut Into a Standout Night

The spotlight was firmly on Gonçalo Ramos, and the Portuguese forward lived up to the expectations. The Rossoneri’s new attacker was not limited to contributing to the build-up: he scored his first goal for Milan and was also directly involved in other goals.

What is happening with Mason Mount? Is he doing things you can't understand?

Are these defenders good enough? Can you trust any of them?

Isn't six points way more than they had at this point last season? Don't they have a goalkeeper who can pass now? Aren't a lot of players injured?

Didn't they finally buy a striker? But isn't he 19? And hasn't he scored only nine total goals in a major European league? But isn't the point more that he's actually a striker? A living, breathing, moving, human body who understands what to do when the ball gets near the penalty box?

Isn't Bruno Fernandes their new captain? How could anyone think it's a good idea to make Bruno Fernandes a captain of anything? But maybe Bruno Fernandes is the perfect captain for this specific team? Is this team good? Is this team bad?

MAN UNITED CONFIRM RÚBEN AMORIM'S COACHING STAFF

Manchester United have confirmed the arrival of five coaches who are to work in Rúben Amorim's backroom staff.

The former Sporting CP coach has hired several of the team who helped him win two Primeira League titles during his tenure in Portugal.

A club statement confirmed that Carlos Fernandes, Jorge Vital, Adelio Candido, Emanuel Ferro and Paulo Barreira have all joined United as the team looks to rebound from the unsuccessful end to Erik ten Hag's time in charge.

They will join former United midfielder Darren Fletcher and Andreas Georgson as first-team coaches. The new look bench faces its first test at Portman Road against Ipswich Town on Nov. 24.

Meanwhile, Bruno Fernandes will return to Manchester to meet up with his new manager and countryman Amorim despite Portugal having another game against Croatia in the UEFA Nations League on Monday.

Fernandes was released early from the camp after receiving a yellow card during Portugal's 5-1 win over Poland on Friday that earned him a suspension for the trip to Zagreb.

PORTUGAL COAST INTO EURO 3-0 VICTORY OVER TURKEY

Cristiano Ronaldo contributed to Portugal's 3-0 win over Turkey with an assist

 Bernardo Silva's first goal at a major tournament, a calamitous own goal from Samet Akaydin and a Bruno Fernandes tap-in gave Portugal a comfortable 3-0 win over Turkey on Saturday to guarantee qualification for the last 16 as Group F winners.

Silva gave Portugal the lead in the 21st minute, rifling home after Nuno Mendes' cross deflected kindly into his path before Akaydin failed to look and passed the ball beyond onrushing goalkeeper Altay Bayindir seven minutes later.

The victory secures Portugal's progress while Turkey must avoid defeat on Wednesday to the Czech Republic, who drew 1-1 with Georgia earlier on Saturday, to be certain of qualifying for the knockout rounds.

"In general, I don't think we played a bad game," Turkey coach Vincenzo Montella told Turkish TV. "We were closer to scoring a goal in the first 20 minutes. Against these types of opponents, if you don't find a goal in the first minutes everything becomes harder."

Portugal started sharply and were unfazed by the deafening whistles from Turkey's supporters when in possession, with Ronaldo drawing an easy save from Bayindir inside two minutes.

Turkey -- who had lost all three of their previous European Championship games against Portugal without scoring -- set up more defensively after they gave up multiple chances to tournament debutants Georgia in their opening match.

They nonetheless often played out from the back and the gamble almost paid off after 20 minutes, but 41-year-old defender Pepe's last-man challenge stopped Orkun Kokcu from breaking clear.

Portugal scored shortly after through a quick break down the left, when Mendes played a dangerous ball across goal which Silva turned home for his first major tournament goal in his 15th game at either the World Cup or European Championship.

A defensive mix-up doubled their lead when Bayindir, who was in the side for Mert Gunok, wandered out of his goal to collect a misplaced pass from Joao Cancelo towards Ronaldo.

But, as Ronaldo and Cancelo remonstrated, Akaydin played a no-look backpass which rolled past Bayindir in slow motion and evaded Zeki Celik's desperate slide to cross the line.

Kerem Akturkoglu forced a great save from Diogo Costa almost immediately after, but Turkey otherwise created precious few chances.

The second half started in subdued fashion before substitute Ruben Neves played a long pass over the top, which fell to Ronaldo who had the goal at his mercy.

Portugal's captain instead laid the ball on a plate for Fernandes to score the simplest of goals, giving Ronaldo the most European Championship assists to go with his records for goals and appearances in the tournament.

Portugal boss Roberto Martinez described Ronaldo's decision to provide an assist rather than go for goal himself as "a pure moment of Portugese football".

"That's an example that should be shown in every academy," he added.

The game petered out even after Turkey boss Vincenzo Montella introduced teenage star Arda Guler, who had scored the decisive goal in Turkey's opening game but started on the bench due to concerns over his fitness.

Turkey pressed late on for a goal that would not have changed the result but would have improved their goal difference, which could prove crucial if they lose to the Czech Republic and need to qualify from third place.

But the end of the match was marred by several pitch invaders, all of whom made a beeline for a selfie with Ronaldo -- who appeared to pose for a picture with the first, but became increasingly frustrated with stoppages to the game.

RONALDO GOAL HELPS PORTUGAL BEAT POLAND

First-half goals from Bernardo Silva and Cristiano Ronaldo helped group leaders Portugal to a comfortable 3-1 victory away to Poland in the Nations League on Saturday as they continued their perfect start to the competition with three wins.

Silva put Portugal in front after 26 minutes, netting from Bruno Fernandes' headed assist, before captain Ronaldo got his 133rd international goal when he doubled the lead 11 minutes later with a first-time shot after Rafael Leão hit the post.

Piotr Zielinski pulled a goal back for Poland in the 78th with a powerful strike into the roof of the net before home defender Jan Bednarek netted an own goal in the dying minutes.

Portugal continue to set the pace in League A Group One with nine points, three points clear of Croatia who came from behind to beat visitors Scotland 2-1 earlier on Saturday.

Poland, who beat Scotland 3-2 on the road in their opener before losing 1-0 in Croatia, are third with three points while the Scots have none so far.

The Poles started on the front foot and leading striker Robert Lewandowski came close to netting an early opener when he was inches from getting his head to a cross as Portuguese goalkeeper Diogo Costa beat him to the ball.

Portugal, however, were quick to grow into the match and Poland keeper Lukasz Skorupski was put to work early when he blocked Diogo Dalot's effort from close range.

Ronaldo then hit the bottom of the bar as Portugal continued to enjoy the bulk of possession and their chances kept coming.

Fernandes put Skorupski to the test again with a curled shot from just outside the box in the 14th minute and the keeper had to stretch to tip the ball away.

Poland's vulnerable back line eventually capitulated when Silva struck before Ronaldo made it 2-0 with a calm finish.

Leão had recovered the ball near the halfway line and slalomed past four defenders before striking the post from inside the box leaving Ronaldo to slot home the rebound.

The 39-year-old Al Nassr forward, who helped Portugal to 2-1 wins against Scotland and Croatia with a goal in each match, scored his 11th of the season for club and country.

He could have added a third after the restart but hesitated to finish from inside the area and instead found Fernandes, who sent the ball flying over the bar.

Poland got a glimmer of hope when Lewandowski had a chance a minute later as he climbed highest in the box to connect with a cross but sent his header narrowly wide of the left post.

Portugal coach Roberto Martinez continued to manage Ronaldo's playing time, with Diogo Jota replacing him in the 63rd minute.

After playing practically every minute of every game at this year's Euros, Ronaldo was replaced by Jota late in the game with Croatia and only started in the second half against Scotland.

Zielinski's strike injected some life into the hosts but Poland lacked clear chances to equalise before Bednarek's own goal confirmed the end of their two-year unbeaten home run.
