MBAPPÉ BREAKS RONALDO'S RECORDS, REWRITES WORLD CUP HISTORY

Kylian Mbappé has once again proven why he is regarded as the defining footballer of his generation after smashing a string of records once held by his childhood idol, Cristiano Ronaldo, while simultaneously rewriting FIFA World Cup history.

The France captain delivered another breathtaking performance at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, scoring twice in Les Bleus' commanding 3-0 victory over Sweden in the Round of 32 to become the greatest goalscorer in World Cup knockout-stage history.

His latest double took his tally to 10 goals in World Cup knockout matches, eclipsing the long-standing record of nine and moving him clear of Brazilian legends Ronaldo Nazário and Leônidas, who had each scored eight in the competition's elimination rounds.

The achievement further cements Mbappé's growing reputation as football's ultimate big-game player. Reports also noted that his overall World Cup tally had risen to 18 goals, leaving him within touching distance of the all-time tournament scoring record.

The performance against Sweden was not just another victory for France. It marked yet another milestone in a career already overflowing with silverware, individual honours and records that many believed would stand for decades.

Away from international football, Mbappé has also been rewriting the history books at Real Madrid.

In his first full calendar year with the Spanish giants, the French forward broke Cristiano Ronaldo's iconic club record by scoring 59 goals in a single calendar year, surpassing the Portuguese legend's mark set in 2013.

The symbolic moment came on his 27th birthday when Mbappé converted a late penalty against Sevilla to draw level with Ronaldo before later moving ahead, celebrating with Ronaldo's famous "Siuuu" celebration—a heartfelt tribute to the player he has long described as his inspiration.

The remarkable scoring spree has underlined just how seamlessly Mbappé has adapted to life in Madrid following his highly anticipated move from Paris Saint-Germain.

His record-breaking campaign has not been limited to domestic football.

Earlier in the season, Mbappé also surpassed another Ronaldo benchmark in the UEFA Champions League by scoring 13 goals in a single group-stage campaign, breaking Ronaldo's previous record of 11 set during the 2015–16 season.

It is another indication that the French superstar is steadily dismantling records previously considered untouchable.

For years, comparisons between Mbappé, Ronaldo and Lionel Messi have dominated football debates.

Now, rather than merely being compared with the game's greatest icons, Mbappé is beginning to replace them at the top of the record books.

Still only 27 years old, the French captain continues to add to a career that already includes a FIFA World Cup title, a World Cup Golden Boot, multiple domestic league crowns and European honours.

France's progress at the ongoing World Cup also means more records could soon fall.

With the tournament entering its decisive stages, Mbappé remains one of the favourites for the Golden Boot, while France are among the strongest contenders to lift another world title.

Should Les Bleus continue their march, the man who once idolised Cristiano Ronaldo may soon own even more of the records that made the Portuguese legend one of football's immortals.

MESSI! MESSI! MESSI! | WORLD CUP RECORD | ARGENTINA 3-0 ALGERIA

LIONEL MESSI AT FIFA WORLD CUP 2026: ALL RECORDS BROKEN WITH HAT-TRICK AGAINST ALGERIA

The world was left stunned as Lionel Messi delivered an absolute masterclass by scoring his first World Cup hat-trick against Algeria on Wednesday.

Lionel Messi scored a hat-trick in FIFA World Cup 2026 opener

The world was left stunned as Lionel Messi delivered an absolute masterclass by scoring his first World Cup hat-trick against Algeria on Wednesday. It was a sensational performance by the Argentine superstar as he broke a number of records during the Group J clash of the FIFA World Cup 2026 at the Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City. On a day that saw young sensations Kylian Mbappe and Erling Haaland score two goals each, Messi's hat-trick was a reminder of his brilliance and what made it even more special was the fact that it came 20 years to the day that he made his first ever World Cup match.

A look at all the records that Messi broke with his hat-trick:

- The three goals took Messi's World Cup goal tally to 16 - the joint-most by any player in the history of the competition. He is currently tied with Germany's Miroslav Klose, and one more goal will earn him the goal-scoring crown.

- Messi now holds the record of being both the oldest and the youngest scorer for Argentina in World Cups. At 18, he scored his first World Cup goal against Serbia and Montenegro back in 2006. Now, at 38, he became the oldest scorer for his country in a World Cup match as he scored his first goal against Algeria.

- Messi became the first footballer ever to play in six World Cups as he has featured constantly for Argentina since 2006. Cristiano Ronaldo will have the chance to achieve a similar feat if he plays against DR Congo on Wednesday.

- Speaking of Ronaldo, Messi shattered the record held by the Portuguese superstar by becoming the oldest footballer to score a World Cup hat-trick. At 38 years and 357 days old, Messi claimed the huge record that once belonged to Ronaldo.

- Besides Ronaldo, Messi also became the second player to score in five World Cups - 2006, 2014, 2018, 2022 and 2026.

The 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign has started on the brightest note possible for Messi. As Argentina aim to become the first team since 1962, Messi's form and contributions on the field are going to be key in La Albiceleste's hopes of making history.

BRAZILIAN LEGEND DUNGA STILL HOLDS TWO WORLD CUP RECORDS 🔥

Did you know that Dunga still holds two of the most remarkable records in FIFA World Cup history?

At the 1994 World Cup, the Brazil captain completed an astonishing 692 passes, the most ever recorded by a player in a single tournament. As if that wasn't impressive enough, he also made 57 tackles, another all-time World Cup record for a single edition.

What's even more extraordinary is that both records were set in the same tournament.

Dunga was often overshadowed by Brazil's attacking stars, but he was the heartbeat of Carlos Alberto Parreira's side. He controlled the tempo, broke up opposition attacks, organised the midfield and led by example throughout the competition. Every successful team needs a foundation, and Brazil's was built around their captain.

His crowning moment came in the final against Italy in Pasadena. With the pressure at its highest, Dunga delivered a commanding display, covering every blade of grass before becoming the first Brazilian captain since 1970 to lift the World Cup trophy.

The statistics alone are staggering. The context makes them even more impressive.

Most passes in a World Cup tournament. Most tackles in a World Cup tournament. World Cup winner. World Cup-winning captain.

One tournament. One leader. One of the greatest midfield performances football has ever seen.
