PREMIER LEAGUE OPENING FIXTURES: LIVERPOOL HOST BOURNEMOUTH, ARSENAL AT MANCHESTER UNITED

Liverpool begin the defence of their Premier League title with a home game against Bournemouth on an opening weekend of the 2025-26 season that sees Manchester United host Arsenal.

Arne Slot’s champions, who are likely to contain the £100m signing Florian Wirtz, kickstart the new campaign at Anfield on Friday 15 August. The following day sees Thomas Frank’s Tottenham take on newly promoted Burnley, with Scott Parker’s side handed a daunting opening set of fixtures on their return to the top flight. After the visit to Spurs comes trips to both Manchester clubs and Aston Villa, as well as the visit of Liverpool to Turf Moor, all by early October.

Leeds and Sunderland, the other two sides promoted from the Championship, begin their campaigns at home to Everton and West Ham respectively, the former the first Monday night game of the new season. The day before that Arsenal visit Old Trafford, which not surprisingly has been selected for Sky Sports’ 4.30pm Super Sunday slot.

Among the other opening fixtures, Aston Villa host Newcastle in the early kick-off on the Saturday and Manchester City travel to Wolves later the same day. Chelsea, meanwhile, take on Crystal Palace in Sunday’s earlier game.

Everton’s first Premier League match at the Hill Dickinson Stadium comes against Brighton the following weekend, when notable fixtures include Arsenal hosting Leeds, Tottenham travelling to Manchester City and Liverpool visiting Newcastle.

It could well be a testing start for the champions, with a home game against Arsenal on the third weekend of the season, before the first international break. The first Manchester derby comes immediately after the break, on the weekend of 13 September at the Etihad Stadium. City travel to Arsenal the following weekend, which also features the first Merseyside derby of the season, at Anfield.

The weekend of 18 October includes Liverpool v Manchester United, and the weekend of 8 November brings the first meeting between Manchester City and Liverpool, at the Etihad Stadium. The first derby between Arsenal and Tottenham takes place the other side of the November international break at the Emirates. The north-east derby returns on the weekend of 13 December when Newcastle visit Sunderland.

The first weekend of the new year features what promises to be a fiery meeting between Leeds and Manchester United at Elland Road, while Chelsea travel to the Etihad. There follows a midweek set of fixtures that includes Liverpool’s visit to Arsenal while Fulham and Chelsea meet at Craven Cottage in what could prove to be a fun west London-derby.

Notable fixtures in the second half of the season include the second Manchester derby on the weekend of 17 January and Liverpool hosting Manchester City on the weekend of 7 February. Everton fans will have to wait until the weekend of 18 April for a home Merseyside derby.

The final day of the season falls on Sunday 24 May, with most concerned presumably hoping there is more on the line than was the case on the final day of the 2024-25 campaign.

It all gets going again at Anfield, then, and for Liverpool comes the task of making a positive start and not becoming the fourth champions in Premier League history to lose their opening game of a season, the other three being Leicester in 2016-17, Chelsea in 2017-18 and Manchester City in 2021-22.

LIVERPOOL NEXT 5 FIXTURES COMPARED TI ARSENAL AND CHELSEA AFTER NOTTINGHAM FOREST DRAW

Liverpool could have its lead at the top of the Premier League cut down to four points by the time it plays its next game, with a crucial set of fixtures coming up.

Liverpool missed the chance to extend its advantage at the top of the Premier League as it was held to a 1-1 draw at Nottingham Forest on Tuesday.

Only time will tell whether that proves to be a point gained or two dropped for Arne Slot’s side, but they now face having their lead at the top of the table cut down to four points if Arsenal can beat Tottenham in the north London derby later.

It hasn’t been the ideal start to 2025 for the Reds, whose only win in the New Year has come against Accrington Stanley in the FA Cup. They will need to step things up over the next few weeks as they and their title rivals face a crucial set of Premier League fixtures.

Liverpool

Liverpool still holds a game in hand over its rivals, and we’ll soon find out whether that is an advantage, with the Reds’ final trip to Goodison Park having now been confirmed for Feb. 12. David Moyes’ return as Everton manager has now been confirmed, meaning it will be a different prospect that Liverpool comes up against compared to what they would have faced back in December.

Next up this weekend though is another difficult trip, this time to Brentford, who are fresh from rescuing a point against Manchester City this week. That away day at Bournemouth also threatens to be a difficult journey, with the Reds facing a more difficult run than it perhaps looks on paper.

Arsenal

Arsenal has the chance to cut the gap to Liverpool to four points later against Tottenham, although given the Gunners’ inconsistent form of late, the Reds will be hopeful Spurs can do them a favor.

The games don’t get much easier thereafter for Mikel Arteta’s side, with Aston Villa visiting the Emirates before a trip to a resurgent Wolves side, while Manchester City awaits after that - and Pep Guardiola may well have been boosted by the arrival of some new signings by that point.

Nottingham Forest

19 January: Southampton (H)

Having taken four points off Liverpool this season, and sitting just six points behind the Reds, we do have to consider Nottingham Forest in the title race - or at least, Slot says we do.

Their next game against Southampton shouldn’t pose any problems, but things do get harder thereafter. Trips to Bournemouth, Fulham and Newcastle over the next month or so will seriously test their title credentials - if they come out of them still in touch with Liverpool at the top of the table, they really will be in with a shout for the title.

Chelsea

Chelsea’s title challenge looks to be falling apart quickly. It wasn’t that long ago they were the Premier League’s in-form team, now they’ve picked up just three points from their last five games.

Sitting 10 points off Liverpool now, you’d have to imagine they will be out of the running, and they could find themselves dropping out of the top four if Newcastle beats Wolves later. They don’t have the easiest set to fixtures coming up either, with trips to City, Brighton and Aston Villa in the offing.

Considering their rivals’ fixtures, Liverpool could have the chance to build up more of an advantage in the title race over the coming weeks, but Slot’s side will need to improve on their recent showings if they are to prove themselves as favorites for the Premier League crown.
