RACING ICON FRANKIE DETTORI HOSPITALIZED AFTER NEWMARKET CAR CRASH

Credit: USA TODAY Sports via Reuters Connect

Legendary former jockey Frankie Dettori has been rushed to the hospital following a serious car accident in Suffolk – with the accident happening at British horse racing HQ – Newmarket.

According to his management team, H Talent Management, the terrifying incident happened on the evening of Wednesday, July 1, in Newmarket.

Another vehicle reportedly struck the rear passenger side of Dettori’s car, causing it to spin out of control and flip over.

Emergency services quickly arrived at the scene, and the 55-year-old was taken straight to the nearby hospital.

Frankie Dettori Suffers Broken Ribs and Thumb In Newmarket Car Crash

Doctors have confirmed that horse racing legend Dettori sustained a few broken ribs and a broken thumb.

He remains hospitalized under close observation while medical staff run further scans to fully assess his injuries.

In an official statement, his agency shared a message from the racing icon:

“Frankie would like to thank the emergency services who attended the scene, together with the doctors, nurses and wider medical team caring for him. His focus is now on resting and recovering. H Talent Management respectfully asks that Frankie’s privacy is respected at this time. No further comment will be made until there is a meaningful update.”

This frightening setback comes just a few months after Dettori officially hung up his saddle in February, following a high-profile farewell tour through America and Brazil.

His final race in Britain was an unforgettable one-a spectacular victory aboard King Of Steel in the Champion Stakes at Ascot three years ago.

While Frankie had been enjoying his hard-earned retirement, he was already locked in for a highly anticipated comeback this autumn, signing up for the charity Legends race at Doncaster’s St Leger meeting in September.

Given the nature of his injuries, however, those plans are now up in the air as his recovery takes absolute priority. With the race on Friday September 11, 2026.

Frankie Dettori Pulled Out Of Plane Crash in Newmarket in 2000

The recent Frankie Dettori car crash in Newmarket, isn’t the first time the former champion jockey has had a serious accident at British horse racing’s HQ.

On 1 June 2000, Frankie Dettori survived one of the most harrowing incidents in British racing history when a light aircraft carrying him, fellow jockey Ray Cochrane and pilot Patrick Mackey crashed moments after taking off from Newmarket Racecourse.

The trio had been travelling to Goodwood for an afternoon of racing when the Piper Seneca failed to gain sufficient height, struck an embankment known as the Devil’s Dyke and burst into flames.

Patrick Mackey Killed In Tragic Frankie Dettori Plane Crash

Pilot Patrick Mackey was tragically killed in the accident, while Dettori and Cochrane escaped from the wreckage in what police described as a “miracle.”

Dettori suffered a broken right ankle, facial cuts and other injuries that ruled him out of racing for several months, while Cochrane sustained burns and bruising.

In the moments after the crash, Cochrane managed to pull Dettori from the wreckage before bravely attempting to rescue Mackey, but the intense flames made it impossible to reach the pilot. Cochrane’s actions later earned him the Queen’s Commendation for Bravery in recognition of his efforts to save his fellow jockey.

The accident had a profound effect on Dettori, who has spoken openly in the years since about believing he was about to die as the aircraft came down.

The experience changed his outlook on both racing and life, with the Italian admitting he became more focused on spending time with his family and appreciating every opportunity he had in the saddle.

Despite the traumatic ordeal, he returned later that season and went on to enjoy many of the greatest successes of his career, including further Classic victories, multiple Royal Ascot triumphs and becoming one of the sport’s most celebrated jockeys.

An investigation by the UK’s Air Accidents Investigation Branch was unable to determine a single definitive cause of the crash, although it concluded the aircraft failed to climb properly after take-off and struck the embankment before crashing.

More than two decades later, the Newmarket plane crash remains one of the defining moments of Dettori’s life and career, serving as a stark reminder of how close horse racing came to losing one of its greatest stars.

SIR ALEX FERGUSON HEALTH UPDATE GIVEN AS MICHAEL OWEN EXPRESSES 'SHOCK' OVER EX-MAN UTD MANAGER BEING TAKEN TO HOSPITAL

Getty Images Sport

Michael Owen has opened up on his "shock" after learning that Sir Alex Ferguson had been taken to hospital, revealing he had spoken to the Manchester United legend just 24 hours earlier. The iconic former manager fell ill shortly before the Red Devils' Premier League victory over Liverpool, sparking concern across the football world.

Precautionary hospital trip from Old Trafford

The legendary manager was reportedly present at Old Trafford preparing to watch United take on their historic rivals when he began to feel unwell. Reports indicate that Ferguson was moved to medical care more than an hour before the scheduled kick-off on Sunday afternoon. The decision was described as a precautionary measure to ensure the well-being of the club's most successful manager ever.

While the sudden nature of the incident caused immediate worry among the United faithful, more positive news has since emerged. According to talkSPORT, Ferguson has already been allowed to return home to continue his recovery, with the situation deemed less serious than initially feared by some observers.

Owen reveals 'sharp' Ferguson conversation

Former Manchester United striker Owen was among those surprised by the swift turn of events, sharing details of a lengthy phone conversation he had with Ferguson just a day before the Scotsman was hospitalised. Speaking on talkSPORT, Owen explained that the 84-year-old seemed in excellent spirits and perfect health during their Saturday morning catch-up.

"I spoke to him, I was on the phone to him for 40 minutes that morning," Owen revealed. "We're talking about football. We're talking about horses. As I say, he's got horses here [at Manor House Stables]. Most Saturday mornings, he gives me a call, and we go through all the horses for the day, and we share what we know and things like that."

Owen, who spent three seasons under Ferguson at Old Trafford, noted that there were no warning signs regarding his former boss' condition. "I speak to him regularly, and he sounded absolutely brilliant, sharp as a tack as normal," he added. "We were talking a lot about Scottish football and what was happening up there. So it was such a shock to hear, obviously, that the next day he was taken unwell, but hopefully it's not too serious."

Shared passion for horse racing

The bond between Owen and Ferguson has remained strong long after their professional relationship ended in 2012, largely due to their mutual love for horse racing. Owen even joked that he expects a call from the former manager very soon to discuss upcoming races at Chester.

"I haven't [had the chance to speak with him] since, but I would expect a message on my phone any time now because he'll see that we've got four or five runners today at Chester and he'll be wondering what's going on. Which horse should he be looking at?" Owen said.

An enduring Old Trafford presence

Despite no longer holding a formal ambassadorial role at the club, Ferguson remains a constant presence at home matches. He is frequently seen in the directors' box, supporting the team he managed for over 26 years. His health has been a subject of public interest since he underwent emergency surgery following a brain haemorrhage in 2018, though this latest incident is not thought to be related.

The Manchester United community continues to hold the 13-time Premier League winner in the highest regard, and fans and former players alike will be heartened by Owen's account of the manager's mental sharpness as he prepares to return to his usual routine.

GALOPIN DES CHAMPS FACING STERN EXAMINATION IN SAVILLS CASE

Galopin Des Champs renews rivalry with familiar foes Inothewayurthinkin and Fastorslow in another cracking renewal of the Savills Chase at Leopardstown on Sunday.

Dual Cheltenham Gold Cup winner Galopin Des Champs has landed this festive Grade One in each of the past two seasons and has won on seven of his eight visits to the Foxrock circuit for Willie Mullins, a record which also includes a hat-trick of victories in the Irish Gold Cup.

However, the nine-year-old was no match for Gavin Cromwell’s Inothewayurthinkin when bidding for a third win in the blue riband at Prestbury Park in March, while he has also been beaten by the Martin Brassil-trained Fastorslow on a few occasions and given both have a race-fitness advantage, the Mullins team appear more hopeful than confident he can again bring the house down on his favourite track.

“I’m looking forward to seeing him out and hopefully he can put in a good performance,” said the champion trainer.

“It’s going to be tough having a race like this on his first run of the season. I’m hoping he runs well, but I’m also hoping he comes back sound.”

Patrick Mullins echoed his father’s thoughts, adding: “It’s obviously his seasonal debut and it’s going to be hard.

“A lot of ours having been needing a run. We’d be expecting him to run very well, but would we be gutted if he gets beaten? No. I’d expect him to be bang there, but if he does get tired from the back of the last it won’t be the end of the world.

“Leopardstown at Christmas is where everyone in Ireland wants to be. It’s a big field with a lot depth to it and it won’t be easy, but you look back at the times of Hurricane Fly when he was getting that bit older as well and they can get a great reception if they do pull it off, so it would be great if Galopin can too.”

Galopin Des Champs disputes favouritism with Inothewayurthinkin, who can be expected to improve considerably on his comeback run when fifth over an inadequate two and a half miles in the John Durkan at Punchestown last month.

Fastorslow, a dual winner of the Punchestown Gold Cup, was third behind Gaelic Warrior and Fact To File in his bid for a second John Durkan success.

Mullins also fields Champ Kiely, Lecky Watson, Grangeclare West and I Am Maximus, Gordon Elliott’s Gerri Colombe runs for the first time in 13 months and Henry de Bromhead is hoping Monty’s Star can raise his game following a below-par reappearance in the Coral Gold Cup at Newbury.

He said: “Monty’s Star is in good form and was probably a little bit disappointing in the Coral Gold Cup, but I would say needed the run.

“He had a setback last year and got kicked by another horse and we had to reconstruct a bit of his face. I would say he might just not be the horse he was.

“But we feel he’s better this year and more like himself, and he probably didn’t progress last year like we thought he would. Hopefully he is coming back to himself now.”

EPSOM DERBY 2025: STAKE EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW WITH FRANKIE DETTORI

The Epsom Derby is the UK’s main horse racing classic event, a Group 1 race first contested in 1780, and is sometimes even referred to as “the Blue Riband of the Turf”. It takes place on the first Saturday in June over one mile, four furlongs, and 10 yards at Epsom Downs and is restricted to three-year-old colts and fillies.

With a £1.5 million prize and worldwide coverage through streaming and television, the Derby is the most lucrative of the five British Classics and one of the Triple Crown events of flat racing. The race was this year’s 246th running, with 19 declared runners, the largest since 2003. Epsom experienced some rain but fans braved the showers to see the race run.

In the build-up to the race, Stake, one of the top crypto sportsbooks, got the chance to speak with champion jockey Frankie Dettori exclusively before the event. Stake’s Global Racing Ambassador Frankie Dettori gave his opinion on the horses, trainers and wagers as Derby enthusiasts got set to cast their bets. In this article, we recap the outcome and highlight of the race and examine the history of the race, the betting patterns, and the future of the Derby.

2025 Derby Highlights

There was a dramatic and surprise win in the 2025 Epsom Derby, as Aidan O’Brien-trained chestnut colt Lambourn took the victory in commanding front-running style. Lambourn was in front from the time the gates opened and never looked back, moving on the ground with authority and confidence.

Although he was not the market favourite for the race, Lambourn was well supported in the betting market and did not disappoint his backers. He established a good early pace and for each furlong he extended his lead and ultimately crossed the line almost four lengths in front of the rest of the field. The win was a record 11th Derby victory for O’Brien which also cemented his place as one of the top trainers in flat racing history.

Although Lambourn’s victory was dominant, the placing behind him contributed to the uncertainty of the Derby. Second was the massive 50-1 outsider Lazy Griff, trained by Charlie Johnston and ridden by Christophe Soumillon. Already having thrilled with a win in the Chester Vase, Lazy Griff once again surprised everybody by out-speeding many more fancied rivals. Third was Tennessee Stud, another impressive competitor trained by Joseph O’Brien, proving that this year’s Derby was all about the underdogs.

Lambourn Steals the Show

On the other hand, the well-hyped runners made a minimal impression. The favourite Delacroix, ridden by Ryan Moore, started slowing down in the most important moments and came only ninth.

The other big favorite, Pride Of Arras, was unable to take the pace and came a disappointing 17th. The outcome helped to add to the Derby’s reputation for drama and unpredictability, with even the most favored horses cracking under pressure.

After the race, Wayne Lordan praised the calmness and stamina of Lambourn and stated that the horse had plenty of energy left even at the lively gallop. He said the Derby is one of the best races a jockey can win and that he felt proud to ride for O’Brien’s Ballydoyle team and the well-known Coolmore owners. Aidan O’Brien returned the compliment, praising Lordan for choosing to proceed early and believing in Lambourn’s endurance.

Exclusive Interview with Frankie Dettori

Racing supporters were treated to more insight in the build-up to the Derby thanks to Stake. The sportsbook published an exclusive interview with Frankie Dettori that included the Italian jockey’s reflections before the race. Dettori, Stake’s racing ambassador himself, said that the 2025 Derby field seemed unusually open. He explained that while the race seems clear after it’s over, it’s always hard to predict beforehand, since many horses could make a strong case to be in the Derby. This was clear as Dettori went through the list of contenders.

Called upon to give his view of the Aidan O’Brien runners, Dettori preferred Delacroix as a top selection. He said that if he were Ryan Moore, he would choose that horse because he’s more reliable, sure to last the distance, and easy to manage.

In a nutshell, Dettori viewed Delacroix’s stamina and temperament as major positives. He contrasted this with stablemate The Lion In Winter, who’d been somewhat immature and came into the Derby off the back of a poorer prep (a sixth in the Dante Stakes). Noting O’Brien’s ability to quickly bring horses back after poor performances, as he did with last year’s winner City of Troy, Dettori still believed Delacroix seemed more straightforward and likely to stay the distance.

Stake’s Racing Ambassador: Frankie Dettori

Stake’s partnership with Frankie Dettori is leading the way for the platform’s global horse racing strategy. Dettori, their first Global Racing Ambassador, brings with him his deep experience and authoritative voice to the sport. Stake’s official sponsorship page highlights his reputation in racing, citing his long and successful career that includes victories in signature events such as the Epsom Derby, Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe and Breeders’ Cup Turf.

His legendary “Magnificent Seven”, a sweep of all seven races at Ascot remains one of the most enduring feats of racing history and even earned him an honorific statue at the racecourse. Through this collaboration, Stake acquires not only an established figurehead but also an expert voice with global recognition. Dettori is tasked with providing racing tips, presenting news, and creating promotional material for the purpose of engaging Stake’s global multicultural fan base in Europe, Asia, and the Americas.

For fans of racing and betting, Stake’s emphasis on horse racing is a no-brainer. Stake’s site features a dedicated racing page wherein live markets and odds are updated. Bettors can track horse racing odds and bet on racing events such as the Derby and wager live.

Horse Racing Odds

Betting on the Derby is as much a part of the spectacle as the race itself. Indeed, statistics confirm that the Derby is more often than not unpredictable. A recent study discovered that in the last ten runnings, the market leader was successful only 30% of the time. That is, seven out of ten Derby winners were initially non favorites.

The past decade has had two actual shocking winners in racing events: Serpentine (2020, 25/1) and Wings Of Eagles (2017, 40/1) stunned the entire horseracing world by winning their tournaments. This indicates that even experienced bettors cannot take for granted that the favorite will win all the time.

In the 2025 race, favorite Delacroix finished out of the frame, while Lambourn delivered a respectable return and won the event. Second-placer Lazy Griff returned about 50-1, a payoff that indicates long shots can reap dividends for courageous bettors at the Derby.

Betting Trends

Dettori’s open-field analysis was consistent with these trends of underdogs performing well and often winning. He stressed in the interview that so many horses appear as possible winners, and that value bets are likely to be found off the beaten track.

Professionals recommend looking at recent form, pedigree and running style instead of following blindly the bookies. For example, one expert joked that O’Brien’s horses do so well at Epsom that even a “third-choice” runner like Lambourn from Ballydoyle can pull off a surprise if trained right.

Derby betting markets often list dozens of possible runners weeks in advance. On race day, the list is narrowed down, and the final starting odds are set. Bettors can now track such odds fluctuations in real-time via online casinos and sportsbooks such as Stake. Their website, for example, features a horse race betting page with live information on horses and odds (accessible via the dedicated horse racing page). This season’s Derby odds fluctuated as track conditions altered; by post time, Lambourn was among the more favored horses in the betting pool, reflecting insider confidence.

It’s interesting that changes in odds are influenced more and more by the history of underdog wins and the conditions of the race. The 2025 Derby took place on tough ground because a dry spring made the surface less optimal for racing than usual. Some favored horses even got totally discouraged; one Ballydoyle runner, Puppet Master, was even withdrawn because of concerns about the ground.

Lambourn, however, coped with the ground. Shrewd bettors often focus on criteria like recent trials and successes: indeed, eight of the last ten Derby winners had competed in a leading trial or Classic a few weeks before the race.

In 2025, both Delacroix and Ruling Court had won their trial races, while Pride Of Arras, who won the York Dante, came into the Derby after an unusual preparation in the Dante race. Dettori’s concentration on such horses shows how professionals balance previous races, yet the outcome demonstrated that every rule can be broken and results are indeed totally unpredictable.

Horse Racing’s Future

The 2025 Derby broke records in several ways, but behind the day’s results lies a bigger story about the future of horse racing. The sport’s interest is evolving: some races face struggles with attendance, as Epsom officials recorded lower crowds compared to past decades. At the same time, new media and sponsorship models are expanding horse racing’s reach.

Dettori himself is a symbol of such change. As a four-decade veteran of racing, he bridges old and new generations. His past triumphs are memorialized in a statue of him at Ascot, but he now reaches fans via interviews, social media and commentary. Dettori’s profile on a horse racing documentary (“Race for the Crown”) and his appeal to sports stars (he claimed to have had interactions from basketball legend Shaquille O’Neal’s management team) suggest the sport of horse racing is gaining increased interest.

What to Expect from Upcoming Events

Going forward, horse racing will likely continue to mix tradition and modernity. Betting tech, global streaming (Stake and others broadcast races online), and international connections are totally changing how fans consume events. Amidst this change, Dettori’s role as Stake’s Global Ambassador offers an assurance that the voice of experience will continue to be heard loud and clear.

Overall, the 2025 Epsom Derby provided drama on the track and a lot of insight off it. Lambourn’s lead-from-the-front victory will be remembered as yet another Ballydoyle success story, and Stake’s interview with Frankie Dettori provided the fans with an inside look at what happens behind the scenes before, during, and after of Derby week.

For the casual fan and the serious bettor alike, an understanding of the history of the race, the riders’ psyches, and the shifting odds makes the experience more enjoyable. With legends such as Dettori still riding and websites like Stake bringing the sport to the world, the past and future of horse racing are certainly in good hands.

GRAND NATIONAL HORSE CELEBRE D'ALLEN DIES AFTRE COLLAPSING AT AINTREE

Jockey Micheal Nolan has been suspended after continuing to ride the horse when he had 'no more to give'

Grand National horse Celebre D’Allen has died three days after collapsing during Saturday’s race.

The 13-year-old outsider collapsed in the aftermath of the race but had been “going the right way” during recovery on Monday after being pulled up just before the end of the four-mile showpiece event.

However, trainers Philip Hobbs and Johnson White on Tuesday confirmed the horse had passed away, leaving them “heartbroken”.

“He received the very best treatment by the veterinary teams and was improving,” a statement from the pair said.

“However, he deteriorated significantly last night and could not be saved. He was a wonderful horse, and we will all miss him greatly.”

A stewards’ enquiry after the race handed jockey Micheal Nolan a 10-day suspension for continuing to ride the horse after jumping the penultimate fence “when the horse appeared to have no more to give and was clearly losing ground”.

Celebre D’Allen is the 17th horse to have died during or in the aftermath of the Grand National since 2000.

Ben Newman, spokesperson for the animal activist movement Animal Rising, said: “Celebre D’Allen, like every other victim of the Grand National, deserved a long and peaceful life. Instead, he was raced to death by an industry driven by greed and profit.

“The blame for his death lies not with any individual but with the ‘sport’ of horse racing itself. Again and again, we see horses pushed far beyond their limits to the point of injury, collapse, and death.

“Animal lovers across the UK are united in calling for an end to this rotten, archaic sport. The verdict is clear: horse racing is long past its sell-by date.”

Brant Dunshea, acting chief executive of the British Horse Racing Authority, said the organisation was saddened to learn of the horse’s death.

“As with all runners in the Grand National, Celebre d’Allen was provided with a thorough check by vets at the racecourse,” Dunshea said.

“This health check includes a trot up, physical examination of limbs to check for any heat, pain or swelling, and listening to the heart to check for any murmur or rhythm disturbance.”

He added: “The BHA and Aintree racecourse will analyse the race and this incident in detail, as is the case every year and with every fatal injury in any race. This will include the horse being sent for post-mortem.

“The process of reviewing every fatality allows us to build on our existing data and help us understand how all reasonable avoidable risk can be reduced in order to keep our horses and riders as safe as possible.

“This process previously led to the changes that were made to the Grand National in 2024, including the reduction in the number of runners. Prior to Saturday’s race, there had been no fatal injuries in the previous nine races run over the Grand National course since the 2023 National.

“The steps we have taken to improve safety over the years reflect the great respect we have for our horses and our commitment to their safety.”

UK POLICE LAUNCH MANHUNT AFTER TRIPLE MURDER OF BBC COMMENTATOR'S FAMILY

Hannah Hunt and Louise Hunt of Bushey(Image: Hannah Grace Aesthetics/Groom and Glow)

LONDON, July 10 (Reuters) - British police launched a massive manhunt on Wednesday after three women, the wife and daughters of a BBC horse racing commentator, were killed in a leafy town outside London in an incident believed to have involved a crossbow.

Officers discovered the three victims, aged 25, 28 and 61, with serious injuries at the house in Bushey, 20 miles northwest of London, on Tuesday evening. They died at the scene a short time later.

The BBC said that the women were Carol Hunt, the wife of its commentator John Hunt, and two of their daughters.

A huge search involving armed officers has now been launched for suspect, Kyle Clifford. Police have appealed to him to give himself up and warned the public not to approach the 26-year-old.

Chief superintendent Jon Simpson called the incident "horrific", telling reporters a crossbow and possibly other weapons were believed to have been involved.

"Our overarching objective today is to protect public safety and to locate Kyle Clifford who is wanted in connection with the murder of the three women in what we believe is a targeted incident," Simpson said.

Friends and colleagues of Hunt expressed their shock at the news.

"Impossible to comprehend the pain. Just know we are all here for you John. We love you pal - racing loves you," ITV horse racing commentator Matt Chapman said on X.

BELMONT STAKES 2024 PREDICTIONS, TOP PICKS, CURRENT ODDS, HORSES, TIME: BEST BETS BY EXPERT WHO HIT THE DERBY

Jockey Flavien Prat will try to win the Test of the Champion for the first time in his career when he hops aboard the favored Sierra Leone in the 2024 Belmont Stakes on Saturday at Saratoga Race Course. Considered one of the top jockeys in the country, Prat is winless in three previous Belmont Stakes mounts. His best finish is second, with Hot Rod Charlie in 2021. On Saturday, Prat will ride Sierra Leone, who was ridden by Tyler Gaffalione in his last three starts. Sierra Leone is the 9-5 favorite in the 2024 Belmont Stakes odds. The lightly raced Mindframe (7-2), Kentucky Derby winner Mystik Dan (5-1) and Preakness Stakes winner Seize the Grey (8-1) round out the top four choices among the 2024 Belmont Stakes horses.

Post time is 6:41 p.m. ET. With an accomplished field set to enter the starting gate on Saturday, you'll want to see what SportsLine writer Gene Menez has to say before making any Belmont Stakes picks or horse racing predictions, given the success he's had during this year's Triple Crown.

A former reporter and editor at Sports Illustrated, Menez covered an array of sports, including horse racing, for the magazine and its website for almost 14 years. Between 2010 and 2012, he served as SI's handicapper for the Triple Crown races and correctly predicted Super Saver to win the Kentucky Derby in 2010.

In 2015, while writing for Sports on Earth, Menez accurately gave out the Kentucky Derby superfecta (American Pharoah, Firing Line, Dortmund and Frosted), which paid $1,268.20 for $2. Then in 2017, he tweeted out his Kentucky Derby picks, including Always Dreaming to win, and hit the Pick 4, which paid almost $6,900 on a $1 bet.

In a span of seven races last year for SportsLine, he cashed the winner of the Lecomte Stakes, the exacta in the Southwest Stakes, the winner of the Holy Bull Stakes, the winner of the Sam F. Davis Stakes, and the trifecta in the Jenny Wiley Stakes. He also nailed National Treasure's win in the Preakness. And last month, he gave out 18-1 Mystik Dan as a live longshot in the Kentucky Derby.

For Saturday, Menez has handicapped the 2024 Belmont Stakes field, made his picks and constructed his best bets. You can head to SportsLine now to see them.

Top 2024 Belmont Stakes predictions

One surprise: Menez is completely tossing Mystik Dan, even though he won the Kentucky Derby and finished second in the Preakness Stakes. A Kentucky bred, Mystik Dan is best known for winning the garland of roses five weeks ago in the Kentucky Derby at 18-1 odds. Two weeks later in the Preakness Stakes, he finished as the runner-up to a loose-on-the-lead Seize the Grey.

On Saturday in the Belmont Stakes 2024, Mystik Dan will make his ninth start in less than eight months, and Menez believes the horse is due for a regression. "I think Mystik Dan will be hard-pressed to produce another top-notch effort," Menez told SportsLine. Menez is not using Mystik Dan in any of his wagers. You can see all of Menez's 2024 Belmont Stakes bets here.

How to make 2024 Belmont Stakes picks

However, Menez's top pick is a horse who will be "right there when the horses hit the wire." He also is high on a double-digit longshot who is coming off a performance that is "better than it looks on paper." He is including these horses in his wagers, and so should you. He's sharing which horses to back at SportsLine.

So who wins Belmont Stakes 2024? What double-digit longshot has a big chance to run well, and how has Menez constructed his wagers? Visit SportsLine to see Menez's picks for the Belmont Stakes, all from the expert who gave out Mystik Dan as a live longshot in the Kentucky Derby, and find out.

KENTUCKY DERBY DRAWS 16.7M VIEWERS, MOST SINCE 1989

Sierra Leone, with jockey Tyler Gaffalione, (2), Forever Young, with jockey Ryusei Sakai, and Mystik Dan, with jockey Brian Hernandez Jr., cross the finish line at Churchill Downs during the 150th running of the Kentucky Derby horse race Saturday, in Louisville, Ky. Getty.

STAMFORD, Conn. -- Mystik Dan's nose victory in the 150th Kentucky Derby drew 16.7 million viewers, the biggest audience for the race since 1989.

Viewership peaked at 20.1 million from 7 to 7:15 p.m. ET on Saturday, when 18-1 shot Mystik Dan, Sierra Leone and Forever Young hit the wire together in the Derby's first three-horse photo finish since 1947. That marked the biggest peak audience ever for the Derby on NBC.

The 16.7 million viewers was up 13% from last year's 14.8 million.

NBC Sports said Sunday that it was the biggest Derby audience since 18.5 million watched Sunday Silence win in 1989, when the race was shown on ABC.

NBC Sports and Churchill Downs Inc. have agreed to a multiyear contract extension that will keep the Derby on the network through 2032.

HORSE RACING'S HOUSEHOLD NAME WILL MISS 150TH KENTUCKY DERBY | BOB BUFFET IS EXILED FOR 3RD YEARS

AP Photo

The 150th Kentucky Derby is missing horse racing’s household name: Bob Baffert.

The Hall of Fame trainer with a record-tying six victories won't be saddling a contender in Saturday's Run for the Roses for the third consecutive year.

Last July, Baffert had another year tacked on to his two-year suspension by Churchill Downs Inc., which was set to expire in 2023. The additional punishment came despite no positive drug or medication tests involving the 71-year-old trainer's horses during that time.

CDI imposed the original penalty after Baffert’s 2021 Derby winner, Medina Spirit, flunked a post-race drug test. The colt tested positive for a legal medication that isn’t allowed on race day in Kentucky. Medina Spirit was later disqualified.

That led to two years of lawsuits, but Baffert failed in his attempts to be reinstated by Churchill Downs or have Medina Spirit’s victory restored. In January, Baffert said he was dropping his legal challenges against CDI. His move didn't thaw the frosty relations between the two sides.

“A trainer who is unwilling to accept responsibility for multiple drug test failures in our highest-profile races cannot be trusted to avoid future misconduct,” CDI said in extending the suspension. “Mr. Baffert will remain suspended from entering horses at all racetracks owned by CDI through 2024. After such time, we will re-evaluate his status.”

The suspension prevented any Baffert horse from accumulating Derby qualifying points, which decide the 20-horse field for the race.

Did Baffert have horses in the last two Derbies?

Technically, no.

The last two years, the owners of Baffert's top contenders transferred their horses to another trainer so they could run in the Derby. But this year, in evidence of their loyalty to Baffert, none of them did so.

Owner Amr Zedan made a last-ditch effort to try to get Arkansas Derby winner Muth into the 150th Derby. He sued in early April.

However, the Kentucky Court of Appeals recently denied a motion for a temporary injunction that would have allowed Muth into the race despite the suspension of Baffert, who was not a party to the lawsuit.

Zedan owned Medina Spirit, who died after a workout in December 2021. No definitive cause of death was found.

Has the suspension affected Baffert's career?

Not really. Despite hits to his reputation, Baffert is still highly sought out by deep-pocketed owners eager to have him train their high-priced horses. However, being shut out of the Derby has to sting since he has always been effusive about the first Saturday in May and considers it the pinnacle of the sport.

He won the Preakness last year with National Treasure, his 17th victory in a Triple Crown race. Earlier that day, one of his horses was injured in a race on the undercard and had to be euthanized. He had purse earnings of over $12.6 million for the year.

He won the $12 million Dubai World Cup with Country Grammer in 2022.

What's next?

Some wags are calling it Kentucky Derby 149 1/2 in a nod to the absence of Baffert's talented colts. As a result, some believe the stronger race will be the Preakness on May 18.

Baffert can enter horses in the Preakness and the Belmont at Saratoga on June 8. He nominated 18 horses to the Triple Crown series, so any of them are eligible for the last two legs.

Among his top prospects are Muth and Imagination, the Santa Anita Derby runner-up. Both have been training at Santa Anita in California ahead of their next starts.

OBSTACLE RACING THE WAY FORWARD FOR MODERN PENTATHLON, SAYS WORLD CHAMPION

Reuters

Elena Micheli is "heartbroken" that horse riding will not be part of modern pentathlon beyond next year's Paris Olympics but the world champion told Reuters that obstacle racing was the way forward for the sport.

Modern pentathlon, which traditionally features fencing, swimming, equestrian show jumping, pistol shooting and running, was plunged into a scandal at the Tokyo Games in 2021 when a coach struck a horse that refused to jump a fence.

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) dropped the sport from its initial list for the 2028 Los Angeles Games but approved its inclusion last month after global governing body UIPM replaced horse riding with obstacle racing.

HORSE RACING-BAFFERT'S ARABIAN KNIGHT BREEDERS' CUP FAVORITE AFTER ARCANGELO SCRATCHES

USA TODAY Sports

Trainer Bob Baffert's Arabian Knight has a clear path to victory in Saturday's Breeders' Cup Classic at Santa Anita Park after Belmont Stakes winner Arcangelo scratched this week.

Arcangelo's absence due to a left hind foot issue narrowed the field down to 12 horses for the Breeders' Cup Classic, which is sometime called the "Super Bowl" of thoroughbred racing.

Arcangelo, who also triumphed at the Travers Stakes, had drawn the inside post and was a 7-2 choice before trainer Jena Antonucci announced the colt was unable to run.

ROYALS, HATS AND TAILS STILL DE RIGUEUR BUT THIS YEAR'S ASCOT WILL FEEL DIFFERENT

Royal Ascot in person, the late monarch was still a presence at her favourite course during the biggest week of its year. “Even though she wasn’t here last year, she was still at Windsor Castle and watching the whole affair,” Nick Smith, Ascot’s director of racing and public affairs, said this past week. “She did still feel very much part of the event.”

The Royal meeting was often said to be the first – and most sacrosanct – engagement in the former Queen’s private diary each year, and she did not miss a single day at Royal Ascot during her long reign until Covid sent the meeting behind closed doors in 2020.

Even in 2017, when Theresa May rather thoughtlessly engineered a clash between the state opening of parliament and the Prince of Wales’s Stakes, commandeering the horses for the royal procession in the process, Queen Elizabeth II rattled through her speech like an auctioneer with a plane to catch and still got to Ascot in plenty of time for the opener.
