On this day, 3rd of June 1929, René Lacoste won the French Championship beating fellow Frenchman Jean Borotra.
Lacoste beat Borotra 6-3, 2-6, 6-0, 2-6, 8-2. Borotra was one of the Four Musketeers with Henri Cochet, Jacques Brugnon and René Lacoste.
Lacoste was once World Number 1 in 1926 and 1927. As a member of the French team he won the Davis Cup in 1927 and 1928.
He was also a very good business man. In 1933 he founded La Société Chemise Lacoste. The company produced tennis t-shirts of which he wore during his tennis matches. The t-shirts were embroiled with a Crocodile but many think it is was an Alligator.
The Lacoste brand now an accessible luxury brand and is very popular amongst "Polo" t-shirt industry. Lacoste was sold to Maus Frèrè in 2012 for €1 Billion.
