Tennis legendary star Novak Djokovic has been deported back to Serbia due to insufficient documentation at the point of entry in Australia.
Djokovic went to Australia for the Australian Open with “vaccination exempted” documents but was not let through due to not meeting visa requirements and he was taken to a detention hotel awaiting his flight back home.
The number one tennis star raised controversy after he was exempted from being vaccinated and was due to play at the Australian Open.
Djokovic has won the Australian Open nine times.
Although he has not spoken yet but lat year he said he was “opposed to vaccination.”
In a statement, the Australia Border Force said Djokovic “failed to provide appropriate evidence to meet the entry requirements to Australia, and his visa has been subsequently cancelled.
“Non-citizens who do not hold a valid visa on entry or who have had their visa cancelled will be detained and removed from Australia.”
Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison said no one is above the law. He also denies Djokovic was singled out.
Over 90% of Australians above 16 have been vaccinated. Rules are rules and the pandemic has been a very serious ongoing problem for Australia.
The Australian Open starts on the 17th of January in Melbourne.
Backlash has been strong from his home country of Serbia. Outrage was so high even the country’s President weighed in the matter.
President Aleksander Vucic said Djokovic was a victim of “harassment” and said that “the whole Serbia” supported him.
Djokovic’s , Srdjan Djokovic, has accused the Australian government of detaining his son with armed guards outside a room at the airport.
