Legendary National Football League (NFL) coach and commentator  John Madden has passed away at age 85.

John Madden is a legendary figure who boasted of having the best winning percentage as a coach with over 100 games.

He coached the then Oakland Raiders and helped them win their first Super Bowl XI in 1977. During that time he and his team finished 13-1 during the 1976 regular season.

The league said he died unexpectedly and no reason was given for his death.

He was a very successful commentator after he retired from coaching football at 42 years of age.

Madden won 11 Emmy Awards and he was commentator of 11 Super Bowls from 1979 to 2009.

Madden was also the face of one of the worlds most popular game by EA Sports, Madden NFL Football.

He never flew because he developed fear of flight and was claustrophobic.
